Co-directors Dominic Brunt and Jamie Lundy open their film on a moment of familial bliss, as a mother enjoys time on the beach with her two young children, Evie and Tony. As she leaves to put on dinner at their nearby home, she asks the children to not stay long on the beach. Her departure is followed by foreboding shots of the water and creepy whispering before the inquisitive Evie vanishes for a bit. She returns drastically changed, now reacting with violence and acting possessively over a strange item she found. Her altered self leaves the family shattered, as they are unable to cope with the young girl’s actions.

Brit indie feature film Evie, starring Holli Dempsey, Michael Smiley and Jay Taylor, has just wrapped a four week shoot on locations in Yorkshire and the Llyn Peninsula, Wales.
Directed by Dominic Brunt and Jamie Lundy (making his feature film debut). the brooding psychological horror thriller centres on Evie (Dempsey), who has been burdened with a dark secret for most of her life.
Witness to a family tragedy when they were younger and ripped from an idyllic life by the sea, both Evie and her older brother Tony (Taylor) were put into care. Twenty years later they are reunited, but something terrible from their past follows…
Evie also stars Honey Lundy, Liam McMahon, Joanne Mitchell and Danny-Lee Brunt. Says director Dominic Brunt:
I was drawn to the allegorical aspects of the story and the stunning locations of Yorkshire and the Llyn Peninsula. I’d known Jamie Lundy as a brilliant...

Like all the best TV opening titles, Harlots’ comical, brazen credits sequence announces its personality in miniature. A collage-style animation set to modern music, it shows cut-out characters from William Hogarth’s 18th-century painting series A Harlot’s Progress clustered around a giant, luridly colored female nude. They tuck into her crevices, canoodle on her mountainous behind, nestle between her buttocks, and peep out over the top of two plump hillock breasts. In the shadow between her thighs, female prisoners toil (just another day at the mine), and finally, she’s on her back, legs spread wide as the show’s title appears dead centre: Harlots. Come on in.
It’s a bold start that announces Harlots’ defiantly effervescent approach to a period and industry – sex work in the 18th century – that could in other hands be wall-to-wall syphilis and woe. It uses Hogarth’s instructive moralism for its own ends,...

The 2020 Emmy ballots have been released by the Television Academy, so we now know which shows, actors, etc. are in contention for this year’s golden statues. Netflix’s comedy series “After Life” accounts for 10 entries on the performer ballot, including creator/writer/director/producer Ricky Gervais, supporting player Ashley Jensen and lead actress Kerry Godliman. Gervais, a two-time Emmy winner for producing “The Office” and starring on “Extras,” plays Tony, a journalist who essentially becomes a grief addict after his wife dies of breast cancer.
“It’s the most overtly grown-up and vulnerable I’ve been as a performer,” Gervais told Gold Derby after the critically acclaimed second season began streaming on Netflix. He added about his character, “He’s sort of addicted to grief, because hope has let him down too much. There’s a staple in comedy, particularly sitcoms, and that is an ordinary person trying to...

In an odd yet welcome turn of events, BBC Two has bought the rights to Harlots, Moira Buffini and Alison Newman’s excellent period drama set in the world of the 18th century London sex trade. But, you ask, didn’t Harlots come out years ago? On ITV? And wasn’t it just cancelled?
Yes, yes and yes to that. Harlots originally aired in the UK on now-defunct digital channel ITV Encore. It was a Us-uk co-production between ITV Studios and streaming service Hulu in the Us. When ITV Encore closed, StarzPlay UK bought the show’s streaming rights and aired seasons two and three via its Amazon Prime channel.
Last month, Hulu cancelled Harlots after three eight-episode seasons, and this month, BBC Two has bought them all. It plans to air seasons one and two back to back later this year, with season three following in 2021. Finally then, after...

“Mock if you will,” Christian Evangelist Florence Scanwell (Dorothy Atkinson) chided the bordello workers in Hulu‘s progressive period series Harlots. “There is honor in righteous poverty.” The creative team will be finding new places of employment. Harlots has been cancelled at the streaming service, according to THR, nine months after its third season came to a close.
Based on true stories of real women, Harlots was neither clichéd nor glamorous. It depicted sex work as legitimate. The sex wasn’t gratuitous, it was perfunctory, and there is no judgment of it. The series was written, directed and produced entirely by women. Co-creators Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre) and Alison Newman were Executive Producers alongside Alison Owen, Debra Hayward and Alison Carpenter. Season 3 was written by Buffini, Jane English, Vivienne Harvey and Jessica Ruston, and directed by Robin Sheppard, Chloe Thomas and Debs Paterson, with Pat Tookey-Dickson producing.

As if things already weren’t rough enough for the women of 18th century Soho, now they have a pair of ambitious pimp brothers to contend with. Hulu said today that Alfie Allen and Ash Hunter have joined the cast of its drama series Harlots. The streamer also set a July 10 premiere date for Season 3. New episodes will bow on ensuing Wednesdays.
Set in Georgian London, Harlots continues to follow the fortunes of the Wells family. Margaret (Samantha Morton) has been sent to America in chains and Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) is vanquished and in Bedlam. It seems that the Wells girls can finally free themselves of their mother’s feud, helped by allies such as Lady Fitz (Liv Tyler). But Charlotte Wells (Jessica Brown-Findlay) soon learns that running a lucrative brothel brings enemies as well as friends, including new pimp in town Isaac Pincher (Alfie Allen). "There are some good things that came out of the 90s..." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled Alright Now, formerly titled Songbird. This just premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival and will be hitting theaters + VOD next month, not too long of a wait to watch. Completely improvised and directed by Jamie Adams (Black Mountain Poets), Alright Now is a feel-good comedy about love, life and the search for new beginnings. Cobie Smulders stars as a 90s rock star who enrolls in a local college after her band falls apart. The full cast includes Richard Elis and Jessica Hynes, with Griffin Dunne, Noel Clarke, Holli Dempsey, and Mandeep Dhillon. I dig the super casual, mumblecore feel to this film. Seems like this has some charm and wisdom to offer, might be a good watch sometime. Check it. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jamie Adams' Alright Now,...

Jessica Brown Findlay, the jewel of "Harlots"
Season 2 kicked off with two disruptive episodes back-to-back, throwing previous power hierarchies into disarray. A relentless new Justice throws the once powerful Lydia Quigley (Lesley Manville) into prison which sets off several plotlines including a new brothel run by Quigley's son Charles (Dougie McMeeken) and Emily Wells (Holli Dempsey). The show is moving with such speed that it's difficult to keep up with these working women. But we shall try since we want everyone watching this show to ensure a third season! The actressing is even more involving the second time around with new cast members, new alliances, and the masterstroke of adding the undersung Liv Tyler to the cast.
A quick review of the first two episodes before the fourth hits tonight so we'll have to have another post soon on episodes 3 and 4. It's so...

Cobie Smulders may just regret to signing up for British Comedy, Songbird, as filming has begun in an arctic-like Cornwall for the month of January alongside Britain’s own comedy legend, Jessica Hynes.

How I Met Your Mother stalwart Cobie Smulders has enjoyed a string of exciting roles since CBS’ hit sitcom bowed off the airwaves three years ago – and that streak shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Variety is reporting that Smulders, who impressed opposite Tom Cruise in the action sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, has signed on for Songbird, a new British comedy from writer-director Jamie Adams. Marking his fourth effort as director, we understand Adams has now welcomed Smudlers in the role of Joanne Sykes, the former frontwoman of a once-popular indie rock band called The Filthy Dukes. Despite an exciting ’90s breakout, The Filthy Dukes are in the midst of a dramatic comedown. Ditto for Joanne, whose life begins to unravel after she discovers that her long-time boyfriend has been cheating on her with, well, “just about everyone.”
The preliminary plot synopsis reads as so:

Two men step over a fallen branch in a damp, overgrown wood. The larger of the two stops to examine a framed picture of a woman in a wedding dress before the pair unzip their trousers and urinate on her image. Sufficiently drained, and with a look of utter seriousness on his face, the Beta pulls out a handkerchief and dabs the tip of his Alpha’s penis dry. Leaving the picture drowned in piss, they move out of the woods into a clearing and see South London open out before them. I should mention at this point that nary a word has been spoken between the pair at this point, and the rest of the film will not containing anything we would conventionally term dialogue.
