After movies such as Dead Poets Society, Master And Commander and The Truman Show, Peter Weir won’t be making another film.
This year marks the 21st birthday of a flat-out masterpiece of a blockbuster, 2003’s Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World. Not just because it has a great telling of the weevils joke in it, the Russell Crowe-headlined film is genuinely wonderful and deserves a 4K re-release.
It’s also just one of the many terrific movies from Australian director Peter Weir who, across a career that’s spanned decades, has given us features such as Picnic At Hanging Rock, The Truman Show, Fearless, Dead Poets Society and Witness.
His last movie was back in 2010, the Jim Sturgess-headlined The Way Back. Since then, Weir has been linked with a film called The Keep that obviously didn’t happen. Peter Weir was also set to direct Shantaram,...

Do you sometimes feel like writing down every second piece of dialogue while watching great TV or movies? That’s exactly the feeling I would use to describe Netflix’s latest coming-of-age show that takes us Down Under. Adapted from the debut YA novel of the same name by author Trent Dalton, the show is an almost fantasy-like crime thriller, but with children. Picture Boyhood, but in the form of a TV show, with a lot of violence and none of the slow burn. I suppose it’s an Australian thing to be uniquely imaginative with crime stories that are almost surreal while simultaneously implying that they are inspired by real-life events. I mean, Shantaram does happen to be one of the more exciting pieces on my bookshelf, and I couldn’t help but make comparisons between these two pieces of work. Not merely because they hail from the pens...

Exclusive: Showtime is developing Jonah Kills, a UK-based comedy created and written by Clem Garritty. It hails from Jax Media UK, which commissioned up-and-comer Garritty to generate four scripts before the comedy was pitched to Showtime. There is no work currently being done on the scripts but I hear the intention is to cast and film a pilot after the strikes, and veteran TV director Iain B. MacDonald has been tapped to direct it.
Jonah Kills follows a gay man living in London and trying to find love through sex, only to discover that every person he has ever slept with has died in a freak accident.
This marks MacDonald’s return to Showtime where he was a director on some of the network’s standout comedy series of the past decade, including Episode, for which he received an Emmy nomination, Shameless and Black Monday.
