Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?

It's almost hard to believe that Friday Night Lights premiered in 2006. Its "clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose" attitude will forever be a staple.
That said, there is no denying that All American has a way of doing things better than its predecessor.
All American is based on the real-life experiences of football player Spencer Paysinger, focusing on two different schools, South Crenshaw and Beverly High School, their students, families, and communities.
We tend to think that money brings happiness. The kids at Beverly High are privileged with lovely things and hefty allowances, but the more meaningful things in life, like family, solidarity, and character, shine at South Crenshaw.
After first watching All American, it's hard not to draw a comparison from it being a mix of Friday Night Lights and whatever teen drama show first comes to mind, whether it's 90210, The Oc, or Riverdale, but a deeper look...

“All American,” which held the No. 1 spot for the most-watched linear series for adults ages 18–49 on the network, is inspired by the real-life story of professional American football player Spencer Paysinger, who is played by Daniel Ezra on the show. “All American” is also the largest show in total audience across all platforms, the network said in a press release.
The series comes from the house of Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios.

HBO has begun production on a documentary about the Bishop Sycamore football scandal. Meanwhile, one of the film’s producers is being told to stop payment to a key participant who’s involved in a fraud case.
A refresher: A year ago, ESPN broadcast a game between powerhouse Img Academy — a Florida prep school for top-level high school athletes — and Bishop Sycamore of Columbus, Ohio, which claimed to have a number of sought after recruits on its own roster. Img won the game 58-0, and during the broadcast ESPN’s crew expressed concern for the safety of the Sycamore players. “Bishop Sycamore told us they had a number of Division I prospects on their roster, and to be frank, a lot of that we could not verify,” play-by-play announcer Anish Shroff said during the game.

Exactly one year ago today, the Bishop Sycamore high school football team took the field in a nationally televised game on ESPN, and proceeded to suffer a horrible 58-0 pounding by elite Img Academy. That was just the beginning of the program’s problems. Investigations and dismissals followed, amid allegations Bishop Sycamore wasn’t even a legitimate high school and, indeed, operated more like a scam.
HBO announced today it is in production on Bs High, a documentary about the scandal-plagued school in Columbus, Ohio, with a premiere expected next year on the cable network and streamer HBO Max. Filmmakers Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe, who earned Academy Awards last year for their live action short Two Distant Strangers, are directing.
Hyperobject Industries’ Adam McKay and NFL Hall of Famer-turned GMA host Michael Strahan are among the project’s executive producers.

HBO is jumping into production on the upcoming “Bs High” documentary. Travon Free and Martin Desmond Roe (“Two Distant Strangers”) have been named to direct the film, which will debut on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max in 2023.
According to the documentary’s synopsis, the story follows the investigation that ensued after August 29, 2021, when the Bishop Sycamore Centurions, a presumed high school football team from Columbus, Ohio, took on perennial prep powerhouse Img Academy.
The nationally televised game ended in the Centurions 58-0 loss, causing fans and audiences to question the legitimacy of the Bishop Sycamore program and the activities of now-fired head coach Roy Johnson. However, the final score and a fired head coach turned out to be just the beginning of the story.
Roe, who shares an Academy Award with Free for their 2020 short film, has a list of documentary credits which includes “Heist,” “We Are the Champions,...

It feels like Nexstar has been flirting with buying The CW for longer than some of the broadcast network’s viewers have been alive. The acquisition, which two individuals told IndieWire is likely to close next week after the Fourth of July holiday, will cost Nexstar all of 0 for 75 percent of The CW.
Pretty sweet deal, right? It becomes a little more sour when factoring in The CW’s current losses, which sources who spoke with The Wall Street Journal, the publication that first reported details on this round of negotiations, said could exceed 100 million. But that’s the burden Nexstar would be taking on, and the relief for the respective balance sheets of current CW parents Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global.
Spokespeople for Warner Bros. Discovery, and Paramount Global did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment on this story. A spokesperson for Nexstar declined comment.

The CW struck gold when it debuted "All American" in 2018. For the past four seasons, the sports drama has largely focused on star football player Spencer James - inspired by the true story of former NFL player Spencer Paysinger. So when talks of a spinoff series, "All American: Homecoming," began, many assumed the second installment would naturally continue Spencer's story. But showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll had plans to center tennis star Simone Hicks (played by Geffri Maya) instead.
"I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity because of the storyline, the direction that [Carroll]'s taking it, and how she wants to represent Black athletes in general."
"I know it was very jarring for a lot of people because they didn't really see me that much [on 'All American']," Maya tells Popsugar. "So I was shocked, too, but my showrunner believed in me, and she's so supportive.

Christian James, an actor who has appeared in shows such as Nashville and Exposed, has landed a recurring role in The CW‘s sports drama series All American. According to Deadline, James will play Wade Waters, an arrogant but talented quarterback for Golden Angeles University. With his East Coast privilege, Waters uses his position of power to haze the freshman, putting them in uncomfortable situations and using his status to pressure the new guys into questionable choices. All American debuted in 2018 and is inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. The series revolves around the Beverly Hills High football team, which recruits Spencer (Daniel Ezra) from South L.A. to join the squad. It highlights the team’s wins and losses, as well as the struggles of two families from vastly different worlds — Crenshaw and Beverly Hills — as they begin to collide. In addition to Ezra, the...

Now in its fourth season, All American continues to be one of the most popular shows on The CW. The series centers around a high school football star named Spencer James (Daniel Ezra). Although the show is fictional, it was actually inspired by the real-life events of former professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Spencer James, the central character in The CW's All American, is a talented football player from a low-income neighborhood who is chosen to play on a new team with the money and resources to make him a star. You may have thought Spencer James's story was written expressly for the screen, so it may surprise you All American is based on real life, and there are some surprising pieces of Spencer's real-life story that you should know.
In the show, Spencer (Daniel Ezra) is tapped by Billy Baker, the varsity football coach at Beverly High in Beverly Hills, to come and play on his team. Spencer leaves his team at South Crenshaw High and moves in with the coach and his family so he's eligible to play. While he experiences culture shock at the new school where his classmates are majority white and wealthy, he becomes a star athlete.

The Bishop Sycamore high school football scandal is one of the stranger sports stories of recent years.
The presumed high school football team from Columbus got whooped 58-0 by Img Academy and the game was televised by ESPN. However, the game turned out to be just the beginning of the story.
HBO Sports has now landed a documentary telling the tale.
The network has picked up the TV and streaming rights to a feature doc from Michael Strahan and Constance Schwartz-Morini’s Smac Entertainment, Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries, Boat Rocker’s Matador Content, and The Athletic.
The film, which will debut in 2022, will ask how the Bishop Sycamore Centurions were even playing the elite NFL feeder team after it emerged that the school isn’t even in Ohio. The coach Roy Johnson was subsequently fired and Gov. Mike DeWine called for an investigation.
The producers have scored exclusive access to Johnson.

“All American” showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll wants the show’s collegiate spinoff, “All American: Homecoming,” to “bring a world to the screen” that many people may not be familiar with — the world of a historically Black college. Inspired by the NBC sitcom “A Different World,” which ran from 1987 to 1993 as a spinoff of “The Cosby Show” and most famously portrayed life at an Hbcu, Carroll is hoping her show will showcase why HBCUs feel like “a form of coming home” for their students.

The CW’s “All American” is off to the races, as its Season 3 premiere posted series-record highs in both the key ratings demo, adults 18-49, and among total viewers on Monday. Pairing the football drama, which is based on the life of former NFL player Spencer Paysinger, with a “Batwoman” rerun landed CW in a sixth-place ratings tie with Spanish-language network Telemundo. The CW was seventh on broadcast in terms of overall audience averages. At the top of the Nielsen sheets, ABC’s “The Bachelor” got some love last night, despite going up against Fox’s “9-1-1” and “9-1-1: Lone Star” season premieres. Beats facing off against the College Football National Championship Game on cable, we suppose (even a relatively low-rated one). In the end, ABC and Fox tied for first in ratings among adults 18-49.
