After over a year hiatus, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 has begun production in Montana, as earlier promised and then revealed by Paramount Network Monday. The Western drama series approaches its close with the final episodes predicted to land in November later this year.
Four and a half seasons of the Taylor Sheridan series have followed the Dutton Family, led by patriarch Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, who oversees the largest cattle ranch in the modern-day United States. The Dutton family faces constant challenges from those at its borders — the growing Bozeman, Montana, the fictional Indian reservation of Broken Rock and America’s first national park.
With several prequel series and a contemporary spinoff in the works, the original installment was originally set to conclude at the end of 2023, but the WGA and SAG strikes delayed production on the final episodes.

After Harrison Ford’s high praise for his 1923 creator Taylor Sheridan, another star from the series explains why Sheridan is a unique creator in all senses. Brandon Sklenar called the Yellowstone spinoff a once-in-a-lifetime experience and shared that no grand-scale film could match up to Sheridan’s series. Sklenar plays Spencer Dutton, the nephew of Ford’s character Jacob Dutton and the son of James Dutton, played by Tim McGraw in 1883.

Besides Ford and Sklenar, the series also stars Helen Mirren, Julia Schlaepfer, and Isabel May. The series premiered in December 2022 and was renewed for a second season in February 2023. The debut of the series holds the record for Paramount+’s biggest debut ever.

Following the success of chaotic cowboy drama Yellowstone, co-creator Taylor Sheridan has been given an entire book of blank checks, and has cashed as many as he could manage in just five years. While his involvement in these TV projects wavers, sometimes drastically, his brand has always been on point.
With over half a dozen shows now within the House of Sheridan, let’s take a look at how each program measures up against the rest of the catalog.
7. Lawmen: Bass Reeves
The story of real life American folk legend Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) was originally supposed to be a larger cog in the Yellowstone prequel machine, but as it continued to evolve, it became its own standalone project, which works both for and against the show. Part of the charm of the Yellowstone prequels for any Sheridan fan is getting to search for connections between the different generations of the Dutton family.

The wait for the last-ever episodes of Yellowstone has been excruciating, but we now know when the final episodes are set to air.
Paramount Network confirmed Thursday that the second half of Yellowstone Season 5 is set to premiere in November 2024.
While the episodes were initially set to premiere this summer, Kevin Costner's availability, as well as the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, took the series out of contention for a 2023 return date.
Yellowstone tells the sprawling story of the Dutton family, and the series doesn't exactly have a fast turnaround time when it comes to production.
Amid alleged behind-the-scenes drama, Paramount confirmed earlier this year that the red-hot series would end with these final episodes of the season.
Before the series ending announcement, six episodes remained of Yellowstone Season 5, but there's a good chance that will change now that the last-minute decision to end the show has been made.

[This story contains spoilers from 1883, 1923 and Yellowstone season five.]
With each new series in the megahit Yellowstone franchise, a new generation of Duttons emerges. After launching in 2018 with Kevin Costner’s central patriarch John Dutton and his immediate family, creator Taylor Sheridan traveled back in time to expand the franchise and introduce elder generations of Duttons, first with the single season of 1883 and now with the series 1923, which has been renewed for a second season.
The Dutton family tree has branched out as Yellowstone has been airing, with the flagship series currently at the halfway point in its fifth and final run. First, viewers followed James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) on their family’s treacherous journey west through the Great Plains in 1883, a trek that would ultimately lead to what becomes the Yellowstone ranch of the flagship series. And later, 1923 would introduce the audience to Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), the Duttons who...

1923: Has It Been Renewed for Season 2?
Unlike 1883, which was designed as one season to tell a complete story, 1923 is getting a second season.
As the writing process was underway, Taylor Sheridan realized he needed more time to wrap up the storylines, which means we're getting a second season.

The latest show affected by the ongoing writers strike is 1923. Filming for the second season of the Yellowstone prequel was scheduled to start earlier this month in Montana but production has now been “delayed indefinitely.”
According to a report from NBC Montana, Butte Civic Center manager Bill Melvin said he was contacted by the production of the Paramount+ series that filming had been postponed as the WGA strike continues.
Filming for the sophomore season of 1923 was due to start on Monday, June 5, and according to Melvin, production is paying $75,000 a month to use the Civic Center through the end of the year.
Creator Taylor Sheridan was already eyeing two seasons for 1923 but Paramount+ officially confirmed a second eight-episode season earlier this year to finish off the saga starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.

Taylor Sheridan fans are looking forward to getting updates regarding 1923 Season 2. Unfortunately, it seems production is currently paused for the next season, leaving fans in limbo regarding what will happen next. So, when is 1923 Season 2 slated to premiere? Here’s an estimate along with what we know so far.
When will ‘1923’ Season 2 premiere?
1923 proved to be a huge success for Taylor Sheridan and Paramount+. Coming off the heels of 1883 was no easy task. But thanks to 1923‘s original story and star-powered cast, fans loved it and can’t wait for more. Unfortunately, it seems production hit a few snags for 1923 Season 2, delaying its premiere date.
Filming for 1923 Season 2 was allegedly supposed to begin in June 2023. That hasn’t happened due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America Strike. The Writers Guild of America represents 11,500 screenwriters, and they stopped doing their jobs after a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Production designers had their hands full the past year, recreating everything from an 18th century palace large enough for indoor badminton games to retro kitchens that looked like they were straight out of the 1970s. To achieve their period-accurate sets, they consulted books, photos and guild archives.
For the third season of “The Great,” production designer Francesca Di Mottola a built a “gigantic games room where anything could happen and served many different purposes,” horse breeding among them. The production designer began scouting locations in the U.K., where the black comedy about Catherine the Great is filmed, but none quite fit what she was looking for, so she built the room on a soundstage.
The room, which first appeared in episode 3 of the Hulu series, had high ceilings and paneled walls with timber all around. It needed to be large enough for parties in addition to badminton games and horse breeding.

After the overwhelming success of "Yellowstone" and the prequel series "1883," Taylor Sheridon set his sights on weaving an even more ambitious, sprawling tale about the Dutton family with his ongoing miniseries, "1923." This prequel to "Yellowstone" (and sequel to the events of "1883") follows a generation of Duttons during the Prohibition era after World War I while tracing the individual character arcs of several Dutton family members, including Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar).
Sklenar plays the youngest son of James and Margaret Dutton, and Spencer's story seems to be deeply rooted in personal trauma, accentuated by the horrors he experienced during the Great War and his adventures as a big game hunter in Africa. Drowning himself in an isolated, dangerous existence far away from his family ranch in Montana, Spencer must return to his roots when he is most needed.

Unlike the first Yellowstone prequel 1883, Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 was always meant to have a season 2. The series will return with more of the 20th-century Dutton’s story, but there’s limited information about the new season. Here’s everything we know so far.

Taylor Sheridan's remarkable "Yellowstone" series continues to delight audiences with its gritty western tropes, fearless characters, and delectable storytelling. What started as a reasonably straightforward saga about a man struggling to keep his vast Montana property has morphed into a full-fledged universe shared by spinoffs "1883" and "1923," respectively, with more on the way. Each entry deepens the Dutton family lore and forms a remarkable portrait of an imperfect family forever bound to a magnificent piece of land by blood.
Still, for all of its ambition, "Yellowstone" is an incredibly bumpy ride filled with magnificent highs and head-scratching lows. Sheridan occasionally leans too hard into cartoonish violence and contrived plot points to settle pivotal character arcs. In his quest to deliver binge-worthy entertainment, he sometimes loses sight of the bigger picture. No iteration of "Yellowstone" is terrible, but some seasons/shows are significantly better than others. Read on to view every...

With the "Yellowstone" prequel series "1923" set to return for season 2 on Paramount+, fans of the love affair between Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) have plenty to look forward to as the couple continues their arduous journey from Africa to Montana. The meet-cute of a British aristocrat and a lion hunter early on in the first season gave audiences faith that there really is a such thing as love at first sight. Alexandra sacrifices her posh life and status to run away with Spencer, and their rushed romance feels like something out of a turn-of-the-century adventure serial. As they both overcome incredible odds to get back to the Dutton family ranch and restore order, their bond only grows stronger. It's an intoxicating onscreen love affair that manages to stay buoyant even when the couple find themselves steeped in melodrama.

This article contains spoilers for 1923 and the Yellowstone universe at large.
Taylor Sheridan is undoubtedly one of the most talented creative voices to come out of television in the past decade. Even choosing to omit his other shows outside of the Yellowstone universe, the world of the Duttons has had a combined seven and a half seasons of cowboy inspired chaos, and it isn’t even finished.
It can be argued, however, that Sheridan is beginning to spread himself a little too thin, and as a result, the first season of 1923 wasn’t as strong as some of his previous shows. There were more than a few moments that were uncharacteristic of Sheridan’s talent and reputation, and certain traps he should try and avoid for the second and final season of the prequel.

Oh “1923,” you thrilling, thoughtful, brutal show. What a finale you delivered. And for us viewers whose heads are spinning from Timothy Dalton’s Bdsm-obsessed bad guy and that heartbreaking separation for Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) there’s so much to process that we need that “1923” ending explained.
The thing that’s so interesting about the Season 1 finale, “Nothing Left to Lose,” written, as with every episode of the “Yellowstone” franchise, by Taylor Sheridan, is that it actually resolves quite a lot even as it sets up that much more for the future. Could it have served as a series finale if “1923” hadn’t already been renewed for Season 2? Possibly. There don’t appear to be plans for a continuation of “1883,” and the production values of “1923” are very much of the no-expense-spared variety.
But the show was a hit, captivating viewers with one of the best romances...

The 1923 Season 1 finale featured a dramatic ending for the Dutton family. Spencer and Alex ran into even more trouble on their voyage to Montana. Meanwhile, Teonna reunited with her father, and Donald Whitfield put his plan to take over the Dutton Ranch into action.

Taylor Sheridan’s “1923” just wrapped up its first season on Paramount+ and it was a doozy.
Not only did the feud between Harrison Ford’s Jacob Dutton and Timothy Dalton’s Donald Whitfield reach a boiling point (which is really something considering everything that’s already come before) but the seemingly never-ending journey of Brand Sklenar’s Spencer Dutton and Julia Schlaepfer’s Alexandra to return to the ranch hit a major setback when they run into Alexandra’s ex-fiancé and he challenges Spencer to a duel.
TheWrap spoke to Sklenar about what it was like filming the finale, including a supernatural encounter with a ghost while on the Queen Mary, whether he knows where his character is headed (hopefully towards some scenes with Harrison Ford) and, of course, we get into the issue of John Dutton’s true lineage. (The finale did offer some helpful clues.)

On a show like 1923, where the cast famously had to attend “cowboy camp” to gain frontier skills ahead of starting production, we weren’t surprised to learn that Brandon Sklenar did his own stunts for Episode 6’s shipwreck scenes.
However, we never pictured the training for those scenes taking place in a community pool more commonly frequented by early morning lap swimmers, toddlers learning how to float and Aquacizers. (Sklenar will explain in a moment.)

This article contains spoilers for the 1923 season 1 finale.
Much like its very busy creator and showrunner Taylor Sheridan, Paramount+’s 1923 is barely taking any time off. After season 1 of the Yellowstone prequel concluded with its finale on Sunday, Feb. 26, production on season 2 is set to get moving soon.
Before 1923 even premiered, Sheridan revealed that, unlike previous Yellowstone prequel 1883, he envisioned this new series as a two-season experience. Sure enough, Paramount+ announced the show’s season 2 renewal shortly after season 1 began airing. Then the Wall Street Journal reported that filming was set to begin on season 2 this spring. The upshot of it all is that 1923 season 2 could arrive by the end of 2023, just as both 1923 and 1883 premiered in December each of the past two years.
Though that level of “end of year” consistency is appreciated, it also means that Yellowstone fans still have a long wait to endure for more Montana madness.

Julia Schlaepfer’s Alex has overcome an angry elephant, a vicious group of lions and a harrowing shipwreck on 1923, but her scorned ex-fiancé’s royal family proved to be insurmountable in the end. Alex and Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) tried to take the high road while voyaging to London on the same ship as Alex’s former family, but Spencer could no longer look the other way when Arthur (Rafe Soule) insulted his new wife and challenged him, a renowned war hero and hunter, to a duel.
Spencer proceeded to manhandle Arthur with ease, but the poor sport pulled a pistol, leaving Spencer with no choice but to throw him overboard to his death. Tragedy only compounded from there as Arthur’s family banished Spencer from the vessel without Alex, resulting in an emotional goodbye between the recently wedded pair.

[This story contains major spoilers for 1923’s season finale, “Nothing Left to Lose.”]
During 1923’s midseason break, Brandon Sklenar told The Hollywood Reporter that circumstances would only get more difficult for Spencer and Alex as they embarked on an arduous transcontinental journey to reach the Dutton family home in Montana. Well, as the season finale revealed, that was putting it mildly.
The newly married couple played by Sklenar and Julia Schlaepfer narrowly survived a shipwreck until rescue came after a long period of being lost at sea. Besides their oceanic disaster, the Duttons had already escaped the clutches of a roaring elephant and a bloodthirsty collection of lions.
Once they finally stepped on solid ground again in Sicily, Alex re-encountered her ex-fiancé, Arthur (Rafe Soule), otherwise known as the British royal family’s Earl of Sussex. And later, in his drunken belligerence, Alex’s scorned ex-lover challenged Spencer to a duel on the first night of a three-week voyage to London. Needless to say,...

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from the finale of 1923 on Paramount+.
The first season of 1923 ended Sunday with not one but three rather dismal developments: Spencer Dutton (Brendan Sklenar) and his wife Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) were torn apart at sea, Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) told Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) that he pretty much owns him after having paid the property taxes on Yellowstone, and Elizabeth Dutton (Michelle Randolph) lost the first baby she conceived with her new husband Jack (Darren Mann). Leave it to creator Taylor Sheridan to keep things challenging and sad as hell in his Yellowstone-verse!
Here, actress Randolph — a relative newcomer whose credits include The Resort and The Undertaker’s Wife — talks about shooting that heartbreaking scene with Mann. She also reveals who she likes spending time with now that production has wrapped and what fans always want to talk about if they ever meet her on the street.

1923 is coming to a close this Sunday, February 26, and according to star Brandon Sklenar, the stakes are as “high as they can be” for Spencer and Alex (Julia Schlaepfer). TV Insider chatted with the actor ahead of the 1923 Season 1 finale to get a glimpse into the drama to come in the Yellowstone prequel. 1923 Episode 7 ended on as awkward of a plot twist as Alex could imagine. Just when the newlyweds were finally safe on shore in Italy, preparing to chart their journey back to the States, Alex’s ex-fiancé, Arthur (Rafe Soule), his family, and the remainder of the travel party she ditched in Africa showed up at the same port. We asked Sklenar how much trouble Arthur is going to stir up for the new Dutton spouses in Episode 8. “He definitely makes his dislike for Spencer known. I think that’s as much as I can say,” Sklenar says.

Julia Schlaepfer plays Alexandra in 1923. Her character is a beautiful British woman from a powerful and wealthy family. Alex leaves all that behind to run away with Spencer Dutton, but she, of course, still has a refined way of speaking. Her accent is very different than the way a modern Brit would speak, and Schlaepfer spent quite a bit of time perfecting it.

It might surprise some fans to learn that 1923 star Julia Schlaepfer is not actually British. The 27-year-old actor hails from Bellevue, Washington, and she hadn’t even seen Yellowstone when she first auditioned for the prequel series.
“My parents loved Yellowstone and 1883. I have never seen either of them, and they would pester me and my brothers to watch all the time,” Schlaepfer joked to Deadline while explaining how she was cast in 1923.

On “1923,” Michelle Randolph plays Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford, a feisty frontier woman and the fiancée of Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) and the mother of their unborn child. It’s that last fact that has been sending “Yellowstone” fans into a spiral since the question now becomes – will she be the grandmother to the John Dutton character in the mainline series? Or will that fate fall to another character (Julia Schlaepfer’s Alexandra is the other viable option)?
In terms of the ever-expanding mythology of “Yellowstone,” this is a huge question and introduces an element of mystery and suspense to the series that will ripple through the entire franchise.
TheWrap spoke to Randolph about this questionable genealogy, as well as whether or not she was a “Yellowstone” fan before being cast, Taylor Sheridan’s style of working and when she’ll be back for the just-announced Season 2.

Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” might be in hibernation but that doesn’t mean that you are totally deprived of Dutton-related drama, as prequel series “1923” is currently streaming. It’s full of all the things that make “Yellowstone” so special – frontier justice, cowboys, big movie stars and a surprising amount of pistol whipping.
“1923” picks up after the events of “1883.” Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the brother of James Dutton (Tim McGraw’s character on “1883”). After James and Margaret (Faith Hill) passed away, Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) take the boys in. Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) is the dedicated cowboy and ranchman while Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), having Ptsd from World War I, retreats to Africa to hunt big game. In a very real way we are seeing the beginnings of the Yellowstone ranch, not just in the buildings but in the craggy philosophy and the psychic trauma that seems to permeate the soil.

As her first foray into television, Michelle Randolph couldn’t have dreamt up a better experience than the one she’s having on 1923. Whether it’s the mentorship of Helen Mirren or the dear friendship of castmates like Julia Schlaepfer and Aminah Nieves, Randolph has gained much more than just horseback-riding skills from cowboy camp, a Taylor Sheridan-verse staple.
Randolph’s character, Elizabeth “Liz” Strafford, grew up on the Strafford Ranch, which is adjacent to the Yellowstone Ranch, and according to Randolph’s own backstory, Elizabeth fell in love with her newly minted husband, Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), during one of her summers back from school on the East Coast. Oddly enough, Randolph and Mann had already played a couple in an indie horror movie called House of the Witch (2017), so it’s somewhat poetic that he would be a part of her first movie and now her first TV show.

1923 Episode 6
Even the most steadfast, diehard Taylor Sheridan fan must admit, that as much of a creative force he has been in the past five years, at times, it can feel as if he is spreading himself too thin.
That was the feeling last episode of 1923 mustered. It was by no means a poor episode, rarely does he write those, but it certainly felt like a long episode. Much like season 5 of Yellowstone felt in the first half of the season, there are so many moments that feel as if the audience is just… oh… say… sitting on top of a lifeboat in the middle of an endless ocean awaiting for the rapture of rescue or some sort of sweet release.

Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) are well on their way to see the Dutton clan in Montana, but the trip was delayed when their rickety tugboat (captained by Prison Break‘s Peter Stormare) collided with a gigantic ship. Fortunately, the couple was saved by a passing craft helmed by the appropriately named Capt. Shipley (Game of Thrones‘ Joseph Mawle), a gentle soul who marries the couple after offering them rings from dead sailors — and a smaller one around his neck.
Here, Schlaepfer explains how they shot those challenging water scenes after spending a blissful two days frolicking on a beach in Kenya. And are they ever going to get to Montana? She promises it’s coming …. soon.

She promises it’s coming …. soon.

Paramount+’s 1923 season one episode six begins by catching up with Teonna (Aminah Nieves) who’s on the run after murdering two abusive nuns and escaping the boarding school. Teonna’s now traveling with Hank (Michael Greyeyes) and they’ve made it to his small home, along with his flock of sheep.
Hank thinks Teonna needs a boy’s name as part of her disguise and she suggests Hank Jr. since that’s what the white men do. Hank prefers Joe and Teonna agrees.
Teonna changes into Hank’s son’s clothes and they burn everything she brought with her from the U.S. School for Native Americans. That is, except for the Bible. Hank fears the white man’s God will turn them to salt if they anger him.

In 1923 Episode 5, Spencer and Alexandra prepare for their dangerous journey to Montana. In the early 20th century, crossing the Atlantic ocean was a long and risky trip, and Spencer wants to get it done as fast as possible. He secures passage for himself and his fiancée Alexandra on a small tugboat. The captain tells them tales of the ghost ship Zebrina, which actually existed during this time.

Spencer Dutton secures passage through the Suez Canal on a tugboat in 1923, Episode 5. The journey certainly won’t be glamorous, and the only passengers on board are Spencer, Alex, and Lucca, the tugboat captain.
At the start of their treacherous journey, Lucca realizes that their boat is approaching an enormous ship and maneuvers it out of the way in the nick of time.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains some details from the fifth episode of 1923 on Paramount+.
Cara got her much-awaited cable: her beloved nephew Spencer is on his way home.
Here, 1923 star Brandon Sklenar, who plays soldier-turned-hunter-turned-overnight tugboat driver Spencer Dutton, talks about his character’s difficult sojourn to Yellowstone and whether fans will find out if he’s the man who will eventually give us Kevin Costner’s John Dutton.
Deadline Let’s start with where we first met Spencer — somewhere in the bush, hunting wild beasts that eat tourists. I’m assuming you didn’t shoot those Africa scenes in the Santa Clarita Valley?
Brandon Sklenar No. If Taylor Sheridan writes it in Africa, you’re going to Africa. We shot in Kenya for a while in September and October, and shot some stuff in Europe in November.
Deadline So how close did you get to those ferocious animals, or...

1923’s People We Care About body count climbs two, possibly three notches in this week’s episode. Sheesh, being attached to the Duttons really isn’t good for one’s longevity.
Read on to see who definitely doesn’t make it through “Ghost of Zebrina” (and who might not be around come next Sunday).

This 1923 review contains spoilers for the episode and the Yellowstone universe at large.
1923 Episode 5
To become one of the more prolific television writers in the modern age, one must have your proverbial finger on the pulse of your audience.
Taylor Sheridan, Paramount’s country-fed celebutante, has been able to tap into something with his rabid audience that transcends political affiliation, gender, and age, and he’s been able to do it consistently for the better part of half a decade. The longevity of his empire is certainly one of the more impressive aspects, as he expands not only the Yellowstone universe, but his impressive catalog of shows, and he’s able to do so, because he seemingly knows how his audience is feeling.
Perhaps, however, he’s mirroring that a little too much. After a short hiatus, the second prequel in the aforementioned Dutton-saga, 1923 returned with “Ghost of Zebrina.” The...

This weekend, Taylor Sheridan’s old timey “Yellowstone” spinoff “1923” is finally back after a month-long hiatus. And not a moment too soon.
When we last left the show, there was a brutal attack on the ranch that left several members of the Dutton family dead and others injured (thank the Lord Harrison Ford pulled through). But in the final sequence, we see Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra (Julia Schlaepfer) in their African love nest. She’s reading all the letters from Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), his aunt and adoptive mother. Finally, she reaches the letter pertaining to the attack and how the family is summoning him back to Montana. He asks her how long it’s been. She says three months. What a cliffhanger! (We love a good time jump don’t we folks?)
TheWrap spoke to Schlaepfer about having to design her character partially by herself (since Sheridan is...

The Yellowstone universe continues growing as Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren join yet another prequel introducing another generation of Duttons. In the Western drama series 1923, Mirren and Ford play Cara and Jacob Dutton. But the English actor recently revealed what annoys her about many American Westerns.
‘1923’ takes place during Prohibition Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton in ‘1923’ | Emerson Miller/Paramount+
1923 is set 40 years after the events of 1883 and Elsa Dutton’s death. Harrison Ford’s character, Jacob, is the patriarch of the Dutton ranch and is married to Cara. Jacob and Cara don’t have children, but they raise their nephews Spencer and John as their own.
The prequel follows the Duttons as they navigate hard times from drought to Prohibition and the early stages of the Great Depression that took its toll on Montana even before the 1929 Stock Market Crash. 1923 premiered on Paramount+ on Dec. 18, 2022, with Ford and Mirren in the lead.
