Austin, TX – Mondo is excited to announce the new book release of Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive, available for saleon November 16, 2021 from author Lars Nilsen, editor Kier-La Janisse, along with several genre enthusiast contributors. Nilsen, a longtime Alamo Drafthouse film programmer and now at Austin Film Society, and Janisse, genre scholar and author (House of Psychotic Women), programmer and documentary filmmaker (Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror), have written a definitive guide to exploitation cinema.
At the dawn of this century, a scrappy one-screen theater in Austin, Texas became ground zero for a revolution in film exhibition. That cinema, the Alamo Drafthouse, took the seemingly foolhardy step of offering free screenings of exploitation and horror movies that had quite literally been consigned to the scrap heap. Led by House Of Psychotic Women author Kier-La Janisse, over the past few years Canada’s Spectacular Optical press has done outstanding work putting personal perspectives on under-explored areas of pop-culture history in books like Kid Power! and Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia In The 1980s. Now, the company is in the midst of an Indiegogo campaign for its newest project, Lost Girls: The Phantasmagorical Cinema Of Jean Rollin. Written entirely by women critics, scholars, and historians, the book re-examines the work of French filmmaker Jean Rollin, best known for his 1970s vampire films like Fascination and The Demoniacs, through a feminist lens.

The Miskatonic Institute for Horror Studies—a.k.a. the horror fan’s Hogwart’s—first opened in Montreal in 2010, the brainchild of film writer and programmer Kier-La Janisse (House Of Psychotic Women). In 2015, it expanded with a branch in London, helpfully strengthening the metaphor we were admittedly reaching for in the previous sentence. Now the nonprofit institute, which offers “university-level horror history and theory classes for people of all ages,” is expanding into the U.S. with a pilot program in New York City this fall, hosted at the Morbid Anatomy Museum.

Two hot TV projects, an environmental zombie and an unhinged park ranger were among highlights at the eighth edition of the horror market.
Frontières International Co-Production Market continued to showcase its growth at Fantasia International Film Festival as it kicked off its eighth edition on Thursday [July 21].
Earlier this year, the genre market announced a new partnership with the Marché du Film at Cannes, and the popularity of its pitching session at Fantasia meant that it moved to the festival’s bigger venue to accommodate the growing industry interest.
This edition’s 20 projects also saw the market’s remit expand to include two television projects for the first time.
House Of Psychotic Women from Rook Films, behind the likes of Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers and Peter Strickland’s The Duke Of Burgundy, is based on horror critic Kier-La Janisse’s acclaimed memoir.

I will be very envious of Australians this coming November, when Monster Fest is unleashed upon Melbourne. Under the guide of the new festival director, Kier-la Janisse (author of House of Psychotic Women, founder of the amazing Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies), I have no doubt that it will be a spectacular year for genre films fans down under. And the new poster, designed by Canadian artists Matt Ryan Tobin, is quite spectacular. Not only that, but Janisse has gathered around her a pretty outstanding group of programmers, including Senses of Cinema co-editor Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Monster Pictures' Neil Foley, and author and American Cinematheque programmer Chris D. Submissions are still open for the festival until August 12, 2016 for Features, Short Films and Expanded Cinema...

Shock reviews nightmarish “psychotic woman” horror film The Eyes Of My Mother. The fascination surrounding “psychotic women” in cinema is enduring and ever-potent. As writer Kier La Janisse charted in her acclaimed reference book-cum-confessional House Of Psychotic Women, there’s a kind of grace, a broken beauty about women buckling under the pressures of society, of…

If you're a film festival programmer or follower, you know the name Kier-La Janisse. For the past twenty years, she's had a hand in programming some incredible film festivals, namely Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, and her own CineMuerte. She's also a film journalist, writer and editor at publisher Spectacular Optical (House of Psychotic Women, Kid Power!, Satanic Panic) and founder of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies. Janisse's truly encyclopedic knowledge of world, horror, and cult film makes her a fantastic choice for her newest role as Festival Director of Australia's heavy horror hitter, Monster Fest. I spoke with Janisse about what her plans are for the festival, as well as on the most exciting genre films she's seen recently, and more.TwitchFilm: Tell me about how you...

Paul Naschy was arguably Spain's finest maker of horror movies, many of which were little seen.
It's been 10 years since the death of Paul Naschy, Spain's finest purveyor of horror, and it still seems somehow unreal and unfair. He was 75 years old and boasted an acting career that lasted from 1960 to only months before he died, with well over a hundred credits (often lead roles) to his name, yet Naschy still had so much to give. Despite suffering long-term depression and undergoing major heart surgery, his spirit, enthusiasm and unpretentious adoration of genre cinema made him feel irrepressible. I could well imagine his barrel-chested form wrestling the Grim Reaper into submission and stealing his gown as a prop for use in a later film but no, Naschy has gone...

"The Next Alfred Hitchcock" was how director Brian De Palma was being celebrated by some back in 1973. It was largely in praise of his latest film, the thriller ‘Sisters’. There is little doubt that ‘Sisters’ is not only homage to Hitchcock’s Psycho, but also a huge nod towards Hitchcock’s entire body of work. As the saying goes - ‘You only borrow from the best’ and of course, it was no secret that De Palma was a huge admirer of Hitchcock’s work.
‘Sisters’ was inspired by a Life Magazine article read by De Palma, about the Russian Siamese twins Masha and Dasha. The film begins with a model named Danielle (played by Margot Kidder), who appears on the local TV game show, Peeping Toms (the film’s first example of its voyeuristic theme). Danielle goes out to dinner with the winning contestant,...

Zoë Tamerlis has a habit for revenge in Ms. 45.
From the inimitably ferocious New York filmmaker Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, 4:44 Last Day on Earth) comes his notorious 1981 crime thriller Ms. 45.
The film follows a mute Garment District seamstress played by the late model/actress/musician/screenwriter Zoë Lund (then known, at age 18, as Zoë Tamerlis ) who, after falling victim to multiple unspeakable rapes, unleashes a one-woman homicidal rampage against Gotham’s male population.
A grindhouse favorite that struck a chord with those who grooved on the vigilante aspect of the film in a then crime-ridden New York City, Ms. 45 quickly became a notorious cult favorite, an eye-opening study of a seamy, sticky, pre-Disney-fication Manhattan..
Regarded as a uniquely feminist entry in the urban revenge subgenre, Ms. 45 combines the rampaging angst of Death Wish and...

Drafthouse Films has announced that they will be releasing both The Visitor and Ms. 45 to Blu-ray & DVD in March:
“Drafthouse Films, in conjunction with Cinedigm (Nasdaq: Cidm), will bring two of its recent theatrical success stories to Blu-ray and DVD in restored and remastered editions: the wildly ambitious and neglected sci-fi/horror epic The Visitor and Ms. 45, legendary director Abel Ferrara’s gritty, gore-filled New York revenge thriller. The films will arrive, respectively, on March 4 and on March 25, 2014, with SRPs of $29.95 for Blu-ray and $27.95 for DVD. They come packed with bonus material in both formats.
Incredibly ambitious but derided and largely neglected upon its initial release in 1979, The Visitor is an unforgettable assault on reality, a phantasmagoric sci-fi/horror/action hybrid. From writer-producer Ovidio G. Assonitis (Tentacles) and director/actor/body builder Michael J. Paradise (aka Giulio Paradisi – Fellini’s 8½),the film artfully fuses elements of some of...

Also joining the roster is David Prowse, the man known best as Darth Vader who is beloved by horror fans for his double-shot turns as the Frankenstein Monster in Hammer’s Evil Of Frankenstein and Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell as well as Vampire Circus.

Appropriately subtitled "An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films," House Of Psychotic Women is half memoir, half analysis as Janisse superbly probes both her own life and a host of films, creating a both a riveting read and a compendium of pictures you'll be dying to see.
And many of them are playing Los Anegeles' Cinefamily throughout February! Robert Altman's surreal classic 3 Women, the underrated Mia Farrow vehicle Full Circle (aka The Haunting Of Julia), obscure German psychodrama Der Fan, Lynch's towering Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, the stunning, wonderfully insane Carol Kane-starrer The Mafu Cage and more all screen this month, many in 16 or 35mm. Janisse will be in attendance for both the February 1 showing of 3 Women and February 5's Play Misty For Me.
You can see a trailer for the series below and find the entire lineup at Cinefamily's House Of Psychotic Women page.

So, recently, I’ve gone from skipping links posts to having these posts be the only thing I’m updating on the site lately. That’s due to having a bit of a crisis of where to go from this point forward, plus I’ve been hit up with a few freelance projects for clients lately — which is a good thing for me personally, but a bad thing for people who enjoy this site as my time is being eaten up. Anyway, here’s this week’s (brief) list. Hmmm, perhaps others are in the same boat and not blogging as much…
