Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Balik, and more have joined Cate Blanchett in the cast of Jim Jarmusch’s new film, Father Mother Sister Brother.
Per Variety, the film recently wrapped production in Paris after previous shoots in Dublin and New Jersey, and will be completed later this year. The film is a triptych that follows three separate stories between parents and their adult children — one in Paris, one in Dublin, and one in the American Northeast.
The film’s description deems Father Mother Sister Brother as a “comedy interwoven with threads of melancholy,” with “character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental.” Jarmusch had hinted that the film will have a musical component, but it’s unknown whether the film will feature original songs or not. In addition to Driver, Waits, and Balik, Vicky Krieps, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat have also joined the cast.

Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn headline single location drama Daddio, and the first trailer has landed: more here.
It would be fair to say that Dakota Johnson hasn’t had the best month. It began with a press tour that seemed to be doing more harm than good in trying to promote Sony’s Spiderman spin-off Madame Web, in which her comments during the tour generated a huge amount of press. This was swiftly followed by a slew of vitriolic reviews – we gave Madame Web a firm but fair one star.
Still, Johnson has many films in the pipeline, the next one to be released will be single location philosophical drama Daddio. For reference, this is the film Johnson was talking about when she described Hollywood as “heartbreaking” and “fucking bleak” – a conclusion she came to because Daddio took “a lot of fighting to get made.”
At any rate, Daddio...

And so the “life-changing cab ride” sub-genre expands with Driving Madeleine, directed by Christian Carion and starring Line Renaud and Dany Boon. One likes to imagine this new film exists in the same universe as all of the rest. Somewhere in Atlanta, Morgan Freeman drives Jessica Tandy (Driving Miss Daisy) and gets a handle on prejudice. Meanwhile, Winona Ryder and Gene Rowlands (Night on Earth) have reunited in Los Angeles. Elsewhere in the City of Angels, Tom Cruise has just stepped into Jamie Foxx’s car (Collateral). Finally, in North Carolina, Souléymane Sy Savané and Red West (Goodbye Solo) carry on a gentle conversation.
Carion often trades in sentimentality (see his Joyeux Noël), and Driving Madeleine is as sentimental as it gets. Cab driver Charles (Boon) is in a bad situation. His marriage is strained, he has debts he cannot pay, and he’s one traffic stop away from losing his license.

The list of directors who put their trust in Robby Müller could constitute a nice history of post-war cinema. Winner of the audience award in last year’s Tokyo International Film Festival, “Just Remembering” channels a number of elements from Jim Jarmusch’s “Night on Earth” but also includes a very interesting role reversal element and unusual approach to the timeline of the story.
“Just Remembering” is screening at Nippon Connection
Teruo is a former dancer who suffers from an injury on his leg that has forbidden him from dancing, and now works as a light technician for a theater company, although he is not exactly great at his job. Yo is a taxi driver (concluding the role reversal element), and a fan of Winona Ryder’s segment in the aforementioned movie, and also Teruo’s former girlfriend. Through a series of flashbacks mostly taking place around July 26, Teruo’s birthday, their backstory is revealed, as much as the background of a middle-aged man always sitting on a bench...

American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has directed the new music video for Cat Power‘s version of The Pogues’ “A Pair of Brown Eyes” (see below) from her new album Covers, which is currently out on Domino Records.
A director widely considered one of the film industry’s most original and unique minds, Jarmusch’s filmography includes acknowledged classics such as “Down By Law,” “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Night On Earth,” and the Forest Whitaker action pic “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.” It’s also worth mentioning Jarmusch’s musical reach is similarly pathbreaking, having worked with luminaries Tom Waits, Neil Young, RZA, Gza, Joe Strummer, Iggy Pop, and more.

2022 brings Far East Film back to its historical dimension. The Feff is once again what it has always been since 1999, but it also carries the imprint of all the latest changes: it is an augmented festival, more inclusive, and even more curious. If in the last two years Far East Film was forced to reinventing itself and review its formula with different parameters, these last few months have generated a sudden and wonderful acceleration: a wave of new energy, a vital frenzy which has shaped the twenty-fourth edition.

The Fever (Maya Da-Rin)
The Fever, director-cum-visual artist Da-Rin’s first full-length feature project, puts a human face to a statistic that hardly captures the genocide Brazil is suffering. This is not just a wonderfully crafted, superb exercise in filmmaking, a multilayered tale that seesaws between social realism and magic. It is a call to action, an unassuming manifesto hashed in the present tense but reverberating as a plea from a world already past us, a memoir of sorts. – Leonardo G. (full review)

Exclusive: Season one of Animal, a nature series from Plimsoll Productions (Night On Earth), will land on Netflix November 10.
The show follows eight families of the natural world, including a mother lioness, a wild dog family, a kangaroo joey and a young giant pacific octopus. Each episode has a high-profile narrator who will bring to life the subjects, said the streamer, they are: Bryan Cranston, Rashida Jones, Rebel Wilson and Pedro Pascal.
The project was almost entirely shot during the pandemic, meaning the team used local camera operators to film in countries that were inaccessible due to travel restrictions.
Series two of the show has already been greenlit by Netflix and will feature narrators including Andy Serkis, Anthony Mackie, David Harbour and Uzo Aduba and will focus on dolphins, bears, birds of prey and apes. That season will premiere in 2022.

Having a film that mostly takes place inside a taxi (or a car) is a concept that has given some impressive films, with “Night on Earth” being one of the first that comes to mind. Farhad Najafi tries his hand in the concept, by implementing a mostly noir approach.
Leyla, a very beautiful woman, leaves her party and boards a taxi, only to have the driver stop a few minutes later to throw all her gifts in a garbage bin. As she seems reluctant to reveal all the destinations she wants to visit during the night, a tense rapport begins between the two, which takes a completely other turn when Leyla offers the driver a large amount of money to drive her for the whole night. The driver is not sure what to do, but goes with the flow, even after it becomes obvious that something dangerous is going on.

At this point, we’re almost legally obligated to start off TV roundups with some variation on this idea that there’s a lot of TV out there, but it really is impossible to keep up with everything. And calling attention to it doesn’t make it any less true!
So, given that TV time is reaching astronomical heights in 2020, how does one find something to watch, let alone focus on just the best of the best? That’s where we come in.
Keeping track of the dizzying amount of television we’ve reviewed so far in 2020 is a task in and of itself, so we’ve tried to make it as easy as possible. Below, we’ve gathered each of our 2020 TV reviews, each with a season number and the network/service where the new episodes first aired for U.S. audiences. Hopefully, this will help you decide what...

Photo: 'Alien Worlds'/Netflix When we conjure up images of life on other planets, we have a host of sources to draw from. Perhaps we think of the little green men parodied in Paul, or the prawns from District 9, or the oddities that made us laugh in Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! We’ve seen aliens depicted as allies, aggressors, or something completely beyond our comprehension (Annihilation). As fun as these are to entertain, Netflix’s new documentary miniseries paints a more realistic, but no less intriguing, portrait of potential alien life. Rooted in fact and scientific speculation, each of the four episodes focuses on a different planet beyond our solar system, and the type of life that may exist there. Combining stunning visuals with fascinating interviews, Alien Worlds varies little from other spectacular Netflix nature outings such as Our Planet or Night on Earth in terms of style and...

I saw Jim Jarmusch's 1999 film, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai, a long time ago, and didn't remember it well beyond vague feelings and dreamy after-images. Revisiting it this week ahead of its release as part of the Criterion Collection (spine #1057), those memories proved on-point. There is a meditative purity to Ghost Dog, playing perfectly to Jarmusch's strengths. It's an absorbing rewatch, one which only seems to have gained power in the 21 years since its theatrical release. All of which might make it sound like Ghost Dog is too ephemeral or elliptical to really sink one's teeth into, which couldn't be further from the truth. It...

Azazel Jacobs’ “French Exit,” the story of a Manhattan socialite who jettisons her old life for a new one in Paris, has been selected as the closing night feature of the 58th New York Film Festival.
The film, which stars Oscar-nominees Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hedges, will make its world premiere at the festival, which is expected to be a mixture of physical and virtual events due to the coronavirus pandemic. Plans are still being formalized by Film at Lincoln Center, the group behind the annual celebration of moviemaking, but some of these screenings will likely take place outside. Covid-19 has forced many film festivals, such as Toronto, to upend their plans, leaning on digital events and drive-ins, while others, such as Telluride, have opted not to host gatherings this year.

This year’s New York Film Festival will close out its festivities with Azazel Jacobs’ “French Exit,” which will make its world premiere as the closing night selection of the upcoming festival. As was announced last week, the 58th edition of the festival will open with Steve McQueen’s “Lovers Rock,” with the festival also playing home to two other features that comprise McQueen’s ambitious new “Small Axe” series in its main slate. Chloe Zhao’s “Nomadland” will screen as the festival’s centerpiece.
As indicated by festival brass earlier this summer, this year’s NYFF is going to operate differently than it has in previous incarnations. The festival is expected to finalize those plans in coordination with state and local authorities in the weeks ahead.

‘Night on Earth’ Review: Netflix’s Nocturnal Nature Doc Is Built Like a Dispatch from Another Planet
As the marketplace gets more crowded with each passing season, it’s become increasingly difficult for nature documentaries to simply capture wildlife as it is. Whether in response to the flurry of Attenborough-voiced tours through global habitats or as a way to just add an extra layer onto them, there’s become something of an arms race to take a well-established format and inject it with a few fresh angles.
Last year, Nat Geo’s “Hostile Planet” promised a less sanitized, more dangerous view of the ongoing interplay between predator and prey. A handful of series have emphasized their comprehensive scope, touting not just a view of the planet, but one that fixes its eye on each of the seven continents. To that growing list of hooks, add the new Netflix doc series “Night on Earth,” a six-part exploration of what happens in nature after the sun sets.

There is no director who more personifies American independent films in the '90s than Jim Jarmusch. Yes, he had been working since the early '80s parallel to the No Wave cinema scene in New York, but it was with films like 1986's black and white dark comedy Down By Law that he really started picking up momentum. By the time 1991's Night on Earth came around, Jarmusch was able to attract higher profile actors, and the resulting film is one of my favorites in his oeuvre. Night on Earth is a five part film that explores a single night in various taxis around the world. Stories take place in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome, and Helsinki each detailing a different wild night in a...

The seemingly inevitable time has finally come for Jim Jarmusch's first directorial efforts, Permanent Vacation and Stranger Than Paradise, to join the Criterion Collection’s already brimming Jim Jarmusch subsection, thus far consisting of, in order of DVD release: Down By Law, Night On Earth, Mystery Train, and Dead Man. For the completionists arranging the Jarmusch subsection of their collections in chronological order, Stranger Than Paradise aesthetically compliments its 1986 follow up, Down By Law (Criterion’s first Jarmusch release) beautifully, offering something of a full circle for the filmmaker whose future Criterion release output is anyone’s guess. While there are oh-so-many worthy works in his filmography, I’m personally calling Coffee and Cigarettes. Perhaps the three B&W films will make for a stunning Criterion trilogy. And yet,...

Kicking off its 5th year, the Careyes Creation Lab, an offshoot of the Arte Careyes Film Festival, is set to run March 18-22, providing an immersive workshop experience in which a select group of rising Mexican filmmakers are guided by renowned mentors in exercises designed to hone and shape their craft.
This year’s mentors, Oscar-nominated director Jean-Marc Vallee (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and Emmy-winning director Joan Darling (“The Mary Tyler Moore Show”), will tutor a slate of participants including directors Joaquín del Paso (“Maquinaria Panamericana”), Marcelo Tobar (“Oso Polar”) and Cristina Gallego (“Birds of Passage”) and actors Hoze Meléndez, Verónica Toussaint, Osvaldo Benavides and Johanna Murillo. All directors have films screening in Arte Careyes, which dovetails with the lab, taking place March 20-24. Past mentors of the lab have included John Cooper, Jim Stark, Darling and Pavel Pawlikowski.

Empath made a big impression with last year’s Liberating Guilt and Fear Ep, a radical 16-minute rush of basement noise and sky-high melody. It was an exciting tape to listen to, in part because it suggested so many possibilities for the future of this band as it continues figuring out its sound. What will Empath sound like next? The lead single from the Philly group’s upcoming full-length debut, Active Listening: Night on Earth, is a promising sign.
“Soft Shape” is the sweetest, catchiest song Empath have made yet.

Above: detail from 2018 UK quad for Khrustalyov, My Car!.One of the most beautiful and confounding of modern masterpieces, Aleksei German’s Khrustalyov, My Car! is getting a 20th anniversary restoration release in both the U.K. and the U.S. on December 14 courtesy of Arrow Films. A potent source for Armando Ianucci’s The Death of Stalin, German’s fever dream of a satire has some the most gorgeous high-contrast black and white cinematography I’ve ever seen (watch the trailer here). It is fitting then that the new poster for the film, by the great Andrzej Klimowski, is in such stark black and white.A new film poster by Klimowski is an event. Born in London to Polish parents in 1949, the designer emigrated to Poland in 1973 to study under the legendary Henryk Tomaszewski at the Academy of Fine Arts. By 1976 he was designing posters for the state-run Film...

“You seem to find what’s appropriate for the worlds you create. A lot of your songs are like little films to me.”—Jim Jarmusch to Tom Waits1In late October of 2013 I arrived at the Orly airport in Paris via Rome and took a taxi to the apartment my friend and I had arranged to rent in the Bastille arrondissement of the city. My cab driver was a friendly middle-aged man of Algerian descent who immediately made me feel at ease, chatting cheerfully on the drive and offering me dates from a brown paper bag. He spoke little English and my French was woeful, a linguistic Frankenstein pieced together from the French songs and films I love, and my attempts at “French-ifying” my knowledge of basic conversational Italian. And yet, despite our language barrier, through humorous gesticulations and the odd familiar word I learnt that the dates were from his garden,...

Even when you live in Los Angeles, as I do, if you’re not in the network of critics groups and press screening and screener DVDs it can be a challenge to keep up with everything you tell yourself you have to see before attempting an informed roundup of the year currently in the rearview mirror. And I also try to not let more than a couple of weeks of the new year go by before checking in, regardless of how many of the year’s big presents I have left to unwrap, though in past years I have not lived well by this dictum—let’s just say that if I’m still posting stuff on the year’s best after even Oscar has thoroughly chewed over the goods, as has happened in the past, well, I’ve overstayed my welcome.

A Jim Jarmusch movie is unmistakable. He’s a storyteller who favors richness of detail over plot, whether it’s reunited vampires (“Only Lovers Left Alive”), escaped prisoners (“Down By Law”), or a cousin visiting from Budapest (“Stranger Than Paradise”). Small in scale, generous in production value, and tempered with idiosyncratic rhythms and dry humor, his films represent one the most original and uncompromised bodies of work in American cinema.
However, while Jarmusch might seem to be an auteur-theory poster child, the filmmaker told IndieWire’s David Ehrlich in 2014 (then writing for The Guardian) that he doesn’t believe, for him, the concept of director-as-author applies:
“I put ‘A film by’ as a protection of my rights, but I don’t really believe it. It’s important for me to have a final cut, and I do for every film. So I’m in the editing room every day, I...

Grief can take hold of even the strongest people and refuse to let go. It’s why they describe it as a “process.” Maris Curran’s “Five Nights In Maine” takes this idea to heart as it follows Sherwin (David Oyelowo), a recent widower who lost his wife Fiona (Hani Furstenberg) in a car accident. Stricken by grief and depression, he travels to a remote corner of Maine to see Fiona’s cancer-stricken mother Lucinda (Dianne Wiest) who’s being taken care of by caring nurse Ann (Rosie Perez). Tensions run high as both Sherwin and Lucinda deal with the tragedy, and struggle to come to terms with their feelings towards each other and Fiona. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below featuring Sherwin and Ann discussing the loss.
