Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

The jury system can by trying, but “Jury Duty” — a doc-style comedy series coming to Freevee on April 7 — examines it through the eyes of one juror. The catch: The actual juror, Ronald Gladden, doesn’t realize the case is fake and everyone else is an actor. All the crazy machinations inside the courtroom are planned, and everyone is in on it, except for Gladden. Will this lone juror be able to find his way to justice despite all of the chaos surrounding the case?

Last week, we posted a list of five forgotten actors we’d like to see make a comeback, and the reaction was so strong, we decided to post a bunch more! There’s a ton of forgotten actors from the 80s and 90s we’d love to have back on our screen, so let’s take a look at another group of them today.
Kelly Jo Minter
Let’s start with a horror favorite and a regular presence on the convention circuit, Kelly Jo Minter. Most folks will remember her from A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, The People Under the Stairs, and a slew of television series appearances. She was everywhere for a while in the 1980s and 1990s, then projects started becoming further and further apart, with nothing between 2008 and 2019, then nothing since. This actress is beloved by many people, and she should get a new part,...

Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

Home viewing competition this week was stiff. It included the HBO Max same-day premiere of “The Suicide Squad” and ongoing availability of Disney’s “Black Widow” and “Jungle Cruise” for an extra $29.99 for Disney+ subscribers. The two titles that could break through were “Pig” (Neon/$6.99) and “Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain” (Focus/$19.99), both of which added VOD play after three weeks in theaters.
Many Nicolas Cage movies are genre-exercise VOD exclusives, but “Pig” stands out with excellent reviews (82 Metacritic) and his performance as a truffle hunter in search of his beloved pig received some the best reviews of his career. It placed on all three charts and as high as #2 on iTunes.
“Roadrunner,” released Friday, is #7 on iTunes. Vudu reports that though the title is just below its top 10, it was their third-highest ranked new release.
Samba TV, an app that tracks home viewing, estimates 2.8 million U.S. households saw “Squad” this weekend.

Film aficionados will want to keep an eye on Amazon Prime Video in August, as the streaming giant is set to debut two Cannes Film Festival premieres: “Val,” a new documentary about Val Kilmer that uses archival footage shot by the actor himself, and “Annette,” Leos Carax award-winning musical (it won best director at Cannes) starring Adam Driver and Maron Cotillard and featuring music by Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks.
But beyond the Prime Video originals, the Amazon library content added to the service next month is vast and impressive. Among the major movies coming to Prime Video include “Aliens,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Jaws,” “Moneyball,” and “Predator.” Meanwhile, IMDb TV, the free service that users can access without a corresponding Amazon Prime subscription, will host “Apollo 13,” “La La Land,” and “Ghostbusters” among many other big titles.

Peter Larkin, whose innovative set design graced Broadway productions and major films, died Monday at his home in Bridgehampton, New York after a brief illness. He was 93 years old and his death was confirmed by his stepson, screenwriter Wesley Strick.
Larkin won four Tony Awards and was behind the set design for such Broadway productions as Peter Pan, The Teahouse of the August Moon and No Time for Sergeants. His film resume was equally impressive, including Tootsie and Get Shorty.
Born in Massachusetts and raised in Boston by Pulitzer Prize winning historian Oliver Waterman Larkin, he attended Yale.
Larkin’s Broadway debut came with Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck in 1951. That led to his big break, the Broadway show of Peter Pan with actress Mary Martin. The show was so successful it immediately went to television within five months, setting a television record for the time with 65 million viewers.

The new Halloween allowed for a touching reunion between actors Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle, whose characters may no longer be siblings but who still share a strange kind of bond after all these years.
The upcoming Blumhouse production marks the return of Nick Castle as Michael Myers, a killer he helped make famous in the 1978 original. Curtis, meanwhile, reprises her role as Laurie Strode, the heroine who survived her first encounter with Michael on that fateful October night and has been preparing for his homecoming ever since.
Speaking to USA, Castle summed up the weirdness of the two of them finally sharing a set once more:
“She said, ‘Is this nuts or what?!’ So that was kind of what it felt like: What the hell, this is going on again 40 years later?”

Welcome to Throwback Trailers! We are turning back the hands of cinematic time to relive some classic movie trailers. Spanning generations and genres, Tbt will be sure to find a touch of nostalgia that everyone can enjoy.
Superman (1978)
Released: December 15, 1978
Budget: $55 million
Worldwide Gross: $300.2 million
A trailer that only consists of names, that’s awesome. People wanted to see Christopher Reeve fly, but no, they were going to wait and enjoy the ultimate teaser.
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Released: December 5, 1997
Budget: $10 million
Worldwide Gross: $225.9 million
Any trailer that uses “the song from Rudy” (Jerry Goldsmith – Tryouts) is alright in my books. It’s uplifting and makes you want to become a janitor and solve math problems you weren’t asked to. Joking aside, Gwh is one of my favorite movies and I loved how this trailer sums up someones life in two minutes but you’re still interested to see the rest.

During the halcyon days of the 1990s, studios hadn’t heard of shared universes, sequels were typically cheaper than their predecessors and celluloid still ruled the world. A new video compilation from Morskoi Kotik takes back us back to those simpler times. Running just under ten minutes, Kotik’s video —“It’s my 90’s (Back to the VHS)”— runs through 60 of the editor’s favorite films of that decade, including films as disparate as “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Major Payne.” It’s an inviting trip down memory lane with some period-relevant tunes scoring the video. Watch the video below and try to see how many films you can name. [35Mm]...

Remember the name Jack Icefloe Jackson. He's listed as the author of the new book Romance for Men: Pandora's Box, and he's one helluva character. Icefloe is a sex machine from the backwoods of Alaska and as unique as they come. One quick peek into Romance for Men will prove it!
Okay, we've got to be honest here: Romance for Men: Pandora's Box may not necessarily have been penned by the lead character, Icefloe. In actuality, and in a deliciously fun twist, Emmy-nominated writer Dean Lorey has to be given some credit for the book.
Lorey is best known as the writer of Friday the 13th Part 9: Jason Goes to Hell (he's also written for "Arrested Development" and came up with some other cult classics like Major Payne). And Lorey has hit a major home run with his new book.

Pajiba's Harry Hanrahan has created another great video compilation which gives us what he thinks are the 100 Greatest Movie Threats of All Time. After watching the video, it's hard to argue with because I think he nailed it. The video is described as "a collection of the funniest, meanest, and most profane ass-kicking threats in the history of cinema." Whenever I get pissed off at someone and I confront them, I seem to find myself pulling out some of these quotes from my head, and I let them have it. Yes, I'm a force to be reckoned with. Enjoy the video!

[1] In real life, when I'm angry with someone, I often find myself at a loss for words -- sputtering incoherently until hours after the fact, when the perfect line finally occurs to me much, much too late. In the movies, though, all the characters have professional screenwriters supplying all their words for them, and are therefore much more likely to have an elegant yet terrifying threat ready at their lips the second someone crosses them. Harry Hanrahan, also known as the guy behind The 100 Greatest Move Insults of All Time [2] and Nicholas Cage Losing His Shit [3], has edited together another fantastic compilation, this time collecting the 100 Greatest Movie Threats of All Time. I don't know about you, but I'm taking notes for the next time I need to scare the living bejeesus out of someone. (It happens way more often than you'd think... kidding. I'm very nice.) Watch the video after the jump.

All About Steve opens this weekend across the country. The title is a play on words of the classic 1950 film, All About Eve. In the movie's honor, I've assembled a timeline of movies that showcase lead characters names in the titles in both odd and clever pun-driven ways. Some of these may have been obvious to you, other puns might be so bad that you'll only realize them now. (500) Days of Summer (2009) Get Smart (2008) Invincible (2006) The Family Stone (2005) King's Ransom (2005) Raising Helen (2004) Deliver Us From Eva (2003) Ginger Snaps (2000) Me, Myself & Irene (2000) Wild Wild West (1999) Zero Effect (1998) Good Will Hunting (1997) Gross Pointe Blank (1997) Barb Wire (1996) Major Payne (1995) Cops and Robbersons (1994) Poison Ivy (1992) The War of the Roses (1989) For Pete's Sake...
