Exclusive: Rosario Dawson and Lana Parrilla are boarding the upcoming SXSW Linda Goldstein Knowlton directed documentary Split At The Root, as EPs.
The pic is schedule to play in the Austin, TX festival’s Documentary Spotlight section.
Split at the Root follows the emotional journey of mothers separated from their children at the U.S. border and the grassroots initiative that, against all odds, reunites those families. When a Guatemalan mother seeking asylum was separated from her kids under the Zero Tolerance Policy, a Facebook post by a mom in Queens coalesced into a movement as thousands of like-minded women across the U.S. refused to stand by quietly. Immigrant Families Together was born – a rapid response group committed to doing what the government couldn’t – or wouldn’t do: reunite parents with their children separated by the Zero Tolerance Policy.

Denzel Washington has two Oscars, a SAG award and over 270 other accolades. One honor he doesn’t have yet over his 40-year career is a single nomination from the BAFTA Awards. With somewhat of a home-field advantage for taking on the words of the Brits’ greatest dramatist William Shakespeare, could Washington finally receive his first nom for “The Tragedy of Macbeth”?
BAFTA is continuing to make a conscious effort to widen their net for diversity, both within its own membership and the films it honors. However, with a new voting method introduced last year following the results of their diversity review, the group threw the awards season for a loop with surprise selections. Instituting a jury into the voting process, performances such as Radha Blank (“The Forty-Year-Old Version”) and Adarsh Gourav (“The White Tiger”) managed to make the cut in favor of “safer” picks like eventual Oscar nominees Carey Mulligan...

Updated– Nordic Entertainment Group (Nent Group) is set to produce two major English-language films every year, kicking off with “Hilma,” a biopic of the revolutionary Swedish artist and feminist pioneer Hilma af Klint, starring Lena Olin (“Enemies”).
Lasse Hallström (‘The Cider House Rules”), one of Sweden’s most celebrated directors, is on board to write and direct the film.
“Hilma” will explore the enigmatic life of Klint, whose unconventional art remained largely unknown for decades. Klint navigated through a male-dominated artistic scene to eventually become one of the Western world’s first abstract artists.
Olin will play Klint in her later years, while Tora Hallström (‘Hachi: A Dog’s Tale’), Olin and Lasse Hallström’s daughter, will be portraying the artist in her younger years.
“I’ve spent three years trying to understand the mystery of Hilma af Klint. This is a story about an unwavering search for the truth about humanity and the universe,...

Emily Blunt hasn’t gotten on the Oscars’ radar yet, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association can’t get enough of her. They’ve given her six Golden Globe nominations to date. So she might be a major dark horse contender for her role in the romance “Wild Mountain Thyme.”
SEEGolden Globe TV contenders: Strong newbies include ‘The Great’ and ‘Ted Lasso,’ but will voters finally catch up with ‘Schitt’s Creek’ instead?
Blunt plays Rosemary, who is in love with a man (Jamie Dornan) in the middle of a family land dispute. It was written and directed by John Patrick Shanley, based on his own Tony-nominated play “Outside Mullingar.” This is Shanley’s third film as a director, and his first since “Doubt” (2008), which earned five Golden Globe nominations and five Oscar nominations 12 years ago.
Granted, “Wild Mountain Thyme” hasn’t gotten reviews as favorable as “Doubt,” but consider Blunt’s track record.

Cate Blanchett has spoken out about Harvey Weinstein’s conviction, urging the industry to move forward and ensure a new culture is established, particularly around gender parity in off-screen roles.
“I think it’s about moving forward, and moving forward without repetition and with genuine progress,” Blanchett told Variety at the Berlinale Series Market on Wednesday, where she was discussing her new Australian series “Stateless” — one of eight series screening in the Berlin Film Festival’s TV sidebar.
“I don’t think anyone involved in the Weinstein case — and the myriad of cases not just in our industry but in every single industry, whether they are sexual or otherwise — no one is interested in vengeance, they’re interested in justice and genuine change.”

Believe it or not, Scarlett Johansson had never received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination before. But that all changed Wednesday when she got not one but two individual ones — lead actress for “Marriage Story” and supporting actress for “Jojo Rabbit” — making it just the 11th time an actor has scored double individual film bids.
Johansson’s double-dipping comes just a year after Emily Blunt got shortlisted her performances in “Mary Poppins Returns” and “A Quiet Place,” winning supporting for the latter. Here are the first 10 instances:
1. Julianne Moore (1999): “The End of the Affair,” “Magnolia”
2. Judi Dench (2001): “Iris,” “The Shipping News”

Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and writer Annie Proulx, whose works include the short story that was turned into the groundbreaking eight-Oscar-nomination Brokeback Mountain, and The Shipping News, was moved by passion to write a guest column on Cold War. Director Pawel Pawlikowski wrote his black-and-white Poland-set historical period drama with Janusz Głowacki and Piotr Borkowski, and based the plot set in the ruins of post-World War II Poland on the love story of his own parents. The film stars Tomasz Kot and Joanna Kulig as the couple, and the Amazon Studios-released film is up for three Oscars including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director (Pawlikowski) and Best Cinematography (Lukasz Zal).

Poor Emily Blunt. After a stellar 2018 and earning Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations for “Mary Poppins Returns” and “A Quiet Place,” she failed to get an Oscar nomination Tuesday for either, becoming just the second double SAG nominee to go 0-2 with the academy.
Blunt follows in the dubious footsteps of Helen Mirren, who didn’t convert her SAG Awards bids for her 2015 films “Woman in Gold” and “Trumbo” into Oscar nominations. But at least Mirren was already a four-time Oscar nominee and a one-time winner; Blunt is still waiting for her maiden bid.
See Oscar nominations: Full list of nominees
The stats were on Blunt’s side. This was the 10th time a performer received two individual SAG Awards nominations. Besides Mirren, the other eight are:
1. Julianne Moore (1999): “The End of the Affair,” “Magnolia”
2. Judi Dench (2001): “Iris,” “The Shipping News”
3. Julianne Moore (2002): “Far From Heaven,” “The Hours...

Dame Judi Dench is defending her “good friend” Kevin Spacey and doesn’t agree with the fact that he was cut from “All the Money in the World” due to sexual misconduct allegations against him.
“I can’t approve, in any way, of the fact — whatever he has done — that you then start to cut him out of films,” Dench said at a film festival in Spain, according to the BBC. Christopher Plummer reshot the scenes in which Spacey formerly starred as John Paul Getty.
“Are we to go back throughout history now and anyone who has misbehaved in any way, or has broken the law, or has committed some kind of offense, are they always going to be cut out?” she asked. “Are we going to exclude them from our history? I don’t know about any of the conditions of it, but nevertheless I think he is, and was,...

Judi Dench spoke fondly of Kevin Spacey during a press conference at the San Sebastian International Film Festival (via Variety). The actress remembered performing with Spacey in Lasse Hallström’s 2001 drama “The Shipping News.” Dench had just lost her husband prior to production and she remembered Spacey being an “inestimable comfort” on set. Dench then spoke out against some of the fallout that Spacey faced after being accused by several men of sexual harassment and abuse.

Terrible films are 10 a penny, but making something as magnificently, joyously awful as Showgirls or The Snowman? That takes real skill. Here are the rules of the Truly Bad Movie
Few things in life can rival the joy of watching a truly bad movie. Those of us who savour inept, high-profile, well-funded bombs can only look with pity on our forebears who had the misfortune to be born before motion pictures were invented. Unlike modern film buffs, who can conjure up literally thousands of bad films with just a few keystrokes (thanks to the cultural abyss that is Netflix), our luckless ancestors were forced to make do with bad plays, bad operas, bad circuses, bad auto-da-fés. How they got through their culturally barren lives without bad motion pictures is one of the great mysteries in human history. I know I couldn’t do it. Luckily we have had two films...

The upcoming live-action Disney movie The Nutcracker And The Four Realms has welcomed its first cast member – legendary ballerina Misty Copeland. Her appearance in the movie will mark her first involvement in narrative cinema, having already featured on television reality shows, as well as a documentary about her own early career, A Ballerina’s Tale.
The film will be helmed by Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom (Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, The Shipping News, Chocolat), armed with a script by Ashleigh Powell, who makes her screenwriting debut here. With Mark Gordon (Grey’s Anatomy) producing the project, it is notable that the first casting choice is a strong one – recognizing that Misty Copeland is a world-renowned, award winning talent. It also indicates the tone that Hallstrom will be striving for – evidently mixing his own visual flair with the rich musical history of the tale.

I've been tracking women in Hollywood for three decades now and I remain shocked at what has not changed. In some ways it's about market forces, but why do men ignore statistics that women make money? Geena Davis, Cate Blanchett, Laura Linney, Meryl Streep, and many more have stated the case. But nothing seems to move the needle, even after the amazing year of the woman, 2013, when movies about and aimed at women grossed a record $2.5 billion worldwide--even as employment figures for women were still 6% of the top 250 highest grossers. For the best explication of what forces keep women in check in Hollywood, see the latest installment of the "Makers" series on PBS, "Women in Hollywood," which debuts October 7. Yes it's true, as narrator Julia Roberts states at the start, that "Hollywood measures success with awards and dollars." Lit buffs rejoice! Iconic Welsh poet Dylan Thomas' 1954 radio play "Under Milk Wood" is slated for a new film adaptation, with Rhys Ifans tapped to star. It will be shot back-to-back in both English and Welsh for seven weeks this summer. Kevin Allen, who will direct and produce, and fFATTI fFILMS announced this morning that they finally secured the UK and international film rights to Dylan Thomas' wondrous literary work about the inner lives of the denizens of a fictional Welsh town. In this "Play for Voices," Ifans stars as First Voice, a role once played by Richard Burton alongside Elizabeth Taylor in director Andrew Sinclair's 1972 film version. This latest iteration of "Under Milk Wood" will take a dark, dreamlike approach to the source material, while maintaining Thomas' bawdy sense of humor. Ifans is Welsh himself and knows a thing or two about working with literature, as...

Hey everyone! Adri here with the latest edition of The Shipping News. Let’s get to the biggest story in slash fandom right now: the heated clash between Sterek shippers and fans of actor Tyler Posey.
It all began with some comments the Teen Wolf star made to a Hollywood Life reporter who asked him about the popular slash coupling of Sterek (Stiles + Derek)…
(source: -beaconhills)
In response to the young actor’s comments, some Sterek fans reacted rather intensely on Twitter and Tumblr.
(source)
Even TheBacklot Tumblr took a pointed swipe at the actor… posting a gif of his remarks and then commenting “And this is why you’re not a fan favorite.”
Ouch.
Posey’s mother claims there have even been death threats against her son….
Now most of us can agree that Tyler Posey’s remarks about Sterek were unfortunate, but that certainly doesn’t justify threats of bodily harm.

Hi everyone. This is Adri coming to you with a month by month slash fandom recap of the year 2013!
January
We started out the year with a great big nod at fandoms from our beloved Chris Colfer during the People’s Choice Awards. A lot of us know the burn of getting snubbed or laughed at for our enjoyment of fanwork, so it was lovely to hear such praise from Colfer.
“It is so flattering to be exploited in your fanfiction. I can’t tell you. It is the ultimate high-five. Thank you to our wonderful fans, the Klainers, the Gleeks, all the names you have for yourselves. It’s amazing to be the subject of your fandom.” – Chris Colfer

One day in February we woke up and turned on the radio and then checked our calendars and looked over our shoulders for any signs of a Tardis. Fall Out Boy?...

The fandom who waited doesn’t have to wait much longer: BBC’s Sherlock will air the three episodes of season three on January 1st, 5th, and 12th.
The first episode, titled “The Empty Hearse” was written by Mark Gatiss and will hopefully reveal to us how in the world Sherlock survived his swan dive off a building at the end of season two. PBS begins airing season three starting January 19th, so fans have a choice to make: watch episodes online shortly after they air in the UK, or wait to watch them on TV a few weeks later? Either way, don’t miss out on the influx of new stills just released or on the mini-episode airing on Christmas! And start placing bets on how long John’s mustache will last, or perhaps even how he realizes that it’s just not a good look for him.

Hi there slash fans! Everything is very exciting at the moment what with all the new and returning shows but I have managed to stop flailing for a little bit just to bring you the round up on all things slash.

Based on the number of stars in the cast of August: Osage County, the big screen adaptation of Tracy Letts‘ Pulitzer Prize-winning play, the film looked like a sure-fire best picture Oscar contender. Some even began referring to it as “August: Oscar County” before anyone had even seen a frame of it. But then the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month, and was met with reviews that one might call very mixed, if one was feeling generous. Some of the performances that it showcases were cheered — particularly those of Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper and Margo Martindale — but the movie itself clearly had problems, with director John Wells even admitting that its ending might have to be changed prior to its Christmas Day release.
This isn’t the first time that a film that looked like an Oscar powerhouse on paper...

From November 1st to November 3rd, the Embassy Suites at Boston’s Logan Airport will host the 2013 KiScon, the fourteenth incarnation of the convention dedication solely to Kirk/Spock, both from the original series and Jj Abrams‘ recent reboot. This was the perfect excuse (occasion, I mean the perfect occasion) to devote an entire column to the most popular slash pairing of all times, so I jumped on the opportunity like a Denevan parasite. Whether you are a Trekkie, a casual fan or a K/S skeptic, you should learn a thing or two about the One Slash Fandom to Rule Them All.

What’s so great about Kirk and Spock, exactly?
You might know them as K/S, Spirk, Spork or Space Husbands. What was the true extent of their relationship? Gene Roddenberry used the Vulcan term “t’hy’la” to explain their bond in his novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture,...

One of the most well-respected actresses working today is Dame Judi Dench. A career spanning over 50 years has seen her work in both film and television, appearing in A Room With A View, Shakespeare in Love, and The Shipping News, as well as numerous Shakespeare adaptations, including Hamlet and Henry V, and memorably playing James Bond’s superior M in films such as Goldeneye and Casino Royale. Her involvement in a film automatically elevates a project, and her newest feature has been no different. Working with High Fidelity and The Queen director Stephen Frears, Dench stars in the film alongside Steve Coogan, who also co-wrote the screeplay with Jeff Pope. The first clip from the film, which will be screening at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, has now been released, and can be seen below.

Supernatural‘s Destiel was your pick for Slash Madness Champion in our 2013 Ultimate Slash Madness Tourney, putting some teeth in the claim that the characters Dean and Castiel really do share a “profound bond“.

We here at TheBacklot are in awe at the level of intensity that slash fans brought to the competition this year. An astounding 9 million plus votes were cast, and there were more than 25,000+ user comments, plus countless tweets and #slashmadness Tumblr postings.
Regardless of which of the 32 competing OTPs (“One True Pairings”) you were ultimately rooting for, everyone who participated should be proud of the result. Teen Wolf‘s Sterek fans in particular should be commended for how passionately they fought in the final round. For much of it Sterek and Destel were locked in a 50/50 split, separated by just a few hundred votes.. Here’s the closing tally…

Can you believe we’re coming up on a year since we ran the original Ultimate Slash Madness tournament? After 4.7 million votes, 4000 plus comments, hundreds of thousands of Tweets and a mountain of Tumblr postings that little tourney celebrating popular slash couples and the fans who ship them turned into quite possibly the biggest thing we ever did on the old AfterElton site.
Since then a lot has happened in the world of slash. We launched our popular weekly column, The Shipping News and for better or for worse references to “slash”, “shipping”, “Otp”, “fandom” and the like busted out of Tumblr and other online fandom hangouts and began to invade mainstream media and the popular vernacular. Actors and TV showrunners commented on it, tweeted about it, cheered it on… and in some cases probably wished it would simmer down. It’s true, all that fan fervor for certain non-canon...

Good morning!
Today is the last day to vote in our annual Hot 100 poll! You have until midnight to let us know how you think the hottest women are, so do it now!
Another day, another Real Housewives "lesbian" scandal. Oh wait, nevermind — she was just in bed with her sister.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer has issued an apology for a comic strip they ran insinuating some local Catholic schoolgirls and nuns are lesbians. Well, some of them probably are.
Speaking of Catholic schools, a lesbian teacher who was fired for getting artificial insemination while employed at the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati has won $170,000 in an anti-discrimination lawsuit.
The first trailer for Orange is the New Black is here! It looks great but entirely different from the memoir it is based on.

Good morning!
Just in case you forgot, Sunday is Arrested Development day! Let's celebrate with this portrait from The L.A. Times and a photo of Portia de Rossi from her L.A. Confidential magazine cover party.
Btw, if you need to catch up or rewatch the entire series before the new season, IFC is hosting a marathon all Saturday long.
If you ever see rumors about Pretty Little Liars' Ashley Benson dating someone, it's probably not true. She told the Huffington Post:
That I’m dating all of my friends. Every time I’m hanging out with Tyler [Blackburn], Keegan [Allen], my friend Isaac, my friends who are girls, I’m dating all of them. It’s very strange. I have a new boyfriend, a new girlfriend every week. But I’m single and I don’t have a boyfriend.
