Showrunner Leslye Headland described Star Wars: The Acolyte as a “fresh entry point,” and that’s exactly what she delivered in the first two episodes, which premiered Tuesday on Disney+.
Set in the final days of the High Republic era — before the events of The Phantom Menace — the mystery thriller tells the original story of a former Jedi reuniting with her master to solve a string of murders, confronting a darkness they hadn’t anticipated along the way.

This article contains mild spoilers for "Star Wars: The Acolyte" episodes 1 and 2.
"Star Wars: The Acolyte," the brand new show on Disney+ set in a galaxy far, far away, is about as far removed from anything we've previously seen in the live-action "Star Wars" universe as you can get. Its story takes place in the High Republic era, a time period that most audiences are completely unfamiliar with and is entirely divorced from the events of the Skywalker Saga along with the majority of other live-action "Star Wars" projects released up to this point. Taking place roughly 100 years before "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," there are very few constants for "The Acolyte" to fall back on.
One of those constants, however, involves bringing a key character from the High Republic books -- that of the Jedi Vernestra Rwoh -- into live-action in a way that might be surprising.

Spoilers for "Star Wars: The Acolyte" Parts 1 and 2 follow.
"I do not believe the Sith could have returned without us knowing," Mace Windu told Qui-Gon Jinn during the events of "The Phantom Menace." "The Sith have been extinct for a millennium," Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi added.
As we all know that a millennium lasts a thousand years, it seemed unlikely that the Sith would be involved with "Star Wars: The Acolyte." Most of us assumed the Jedi would have had no interaction whatsoever with the secret line of Sith that led to Darth Sidious and his destruction of the Jedi until Darth Maul revealed himself to Qui-Gon on Tatooine.
But "The Acolyte" seems as though it could upend everything we knew about the involvement of the Sith and their quest against the Jedi in the time period the show takes place in, 100 years prior to the events of "The Phantom Menace.

"Star Wars: The Acolyte" creator Leslye Headland has done something that many thought might've been impossible: creating a "Star Wars" story that you can dive into without any preparation or knowledge of any other parts of the franchise's lore. You definitely do not need to know a lot of minutiae in order to gain enjoyment out of "The Acolyte" (watch the trailer here).
Having said that, there are deeper connections to the "Star Wars" lore that you don't need to know, but it certainly adds to the enjoyment of the show. One of the most significant details in that respect is the knowledge of the time period the series is capping off, along with the struggles of the Jedi and the galaxy itself over the previous couple of hundred years in the "Star Wars" universe. Allow this, then, to be your guide to the ins and outs of the High Republic era.

This Star Wars: The Acolyte review contains spoilers.
One of The Acolyte’s most enticing selling points is that it’s the first live-action Star Wars show that exists outside of the Skywalker Saga, set 100 years before The Phantom Menace. This might lead one to believe that the show would be a refreshing change of pace or tone for the franchise, but unfortunately, it actually looks, sounds, and feels a lot like the other Star Wars shows, at least in its first two episodes.
This isn’t an inherently bad thing, of course, as most of the other Star Wars live-action shows have been quite good. The Acolyte has a lot going for it, with a great premise, an intriguing central mystery that reveals itself in captivating fashion, and some rock-solid performances. But it feels like there was a missed opportunity here to lean into the aspects of the story...

When Lee Jung-jae’s previous show Squid Game became a global phenomenon, Star Wars: The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland was among the many viewers who helped make it Netflix’s most popular non-English speaking series. On top of that, she was also writing The Acolyte’s High Republic Jedi character of Master Sol at the same time as her binge, and that’s when it dawned on the Russian Doll creator that the South Korean actor would be a perfect fit for the honorable Jedi. Sol would then go on to serve as a central figure of Headland’s mystery-thriller series that takes place a century before Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999).
However, Lee — whom his collaborators affectionately refer to as “J.J.” — remains rather shocked that his Squid Game character, Seong Gi-hun, inspired Headland to write Sol with him in mind.

Warning: The following review contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Disney+/Lucasfilm’s series The Acolyte which drop tonight at 6Pm Pt.
It’s a 100 years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, essentially the whip and buggy days of the Jedi order, where there’s no such thing as light and dark side yet, not even the Sith.
But there’s a great disturbance in the force in the new Star Wars Disney+ series The Acolyte in which Amandla Stenberg’s Mae, a masked jedi who is going around picking fights with (what will be) four good-spirited jedis, i.e. we open on Carrie Anne Moss’ sage Indara getting offed by Mae “to please the master.” That’s an upsetting kill as Moss is in perfect acrobatic shape in a nod to her high-wire Matrix days. Mae slays Indara not with a lightsaber, but rather with little spears.

The best Star Wars projects in recent years are the ones that stray from the original story.
From “Rogue One” to “The Last Jedi” to the animated “Visions” and last year’s “Andor,” the franchise finds its footing by taking risks and focusing on original stories that just happen to be set in a galaxy far, far away. With the middling quality of so many other Star Wars offshoots since Disney+ launched in 2019, Leslye Headland’s “The Acolyte” finds company, mercifully, in the former category, with an intriguing crime thriller set further back than any other live-action entry.
“The Acolyte” takes place even longer ago in the galaxy’s history, during the High Republic Era that preceded even young Anakin Skywalker in “The Phantom Menace.” It’s a time of peace, as the opening text says, but like all peaceful pockets in Star Wars, that gets interrupted. A violent crime...

The lightsaber duels are arguably the most exciting aspect of the Star Wars franchise, which was first launched by George Lucas in 1977. Over the years, the methodology and tactics of the lightsaber duel have evolved, with Lucas taking a more complex and martial arts-driven approach for the prequel trilogy.

The Phantom Menace features one of the best lightsaber duels in the form of the three-way battle between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Darth Maul. According to stunt coordinator Nick Gillard, much of the choreography was in line with Lucas’ new approach. Moreover, Lucas’ son, Jett Lucas, made a key contribution to the fight scene. Being a Star Wars fan is very interesting. I grew up through the era of the prequel trilogy and thought it was the most boring thing ever. Then I watched the original trilogy, and I thought it was the greatest thing ever. And even though I wasn’t nostalgic about the originals or the prequels, I enjoyed the legacy sequel trilogy for the most part. The franchise had a solid fanbase on the small screen with its animated projects, which didn’t really interest me. That said, the first season of The Mandalorian did do the trick. After the mercurial success of that show, Star Wars totally shifted to the small screen, and they started churning out stuff that ranged from mediocre to abysmally bad. Andor was like a diamond in the rough. And although it seemed like nothing in the franchise could be as good as that, especially in terms of its storytelling,...

Total number of episodes: 8 Episodes watched for review: 2
Created by Leslye Headland (the TV talent behind Russian Doll), The Acolyte is an eight part Star Wars TV series that marks a significant break from the spin-off material we’ve seen so far. For one thing, it’s set 100 years before the events of The Phantom Menace, meaning that slavish fan service can (hopefully) be kept to a minimum. And for another, the fact that the series is essentially positioned as a murder mystery shows a welcome attempt to play around with genre in the Star Wars universe, something that has arguably been a long time coming.
The show opens in style, with Carrie-Anne Moss’ Jedi Master Indara facing off against a would-be assassin who turns out to be equally proficient in the ways of the Force.

A girl walks into a bar — stop us if you’ve heard this one. Picking her way through tables crowded with a menagerie of alien patrons, she squares up to a figure in Jedi robes. The resulting fracas is something you definitely won’t be familiar with — at least not from Star Wars. A whirlwind of wuxia-inspired fists and feet, the series prologue has the flavour of Hong Kong action cinema, but with a distinctly Star Wars twist — punches and parries augmented with Jedi abilities that block and throw with unseen power. It’s an arresting display of precision-choreographed Force-fu that unfolds (almost) without either party reaching for a lightsaber. Sometimes, the "Star Wars" universe can seem very small. The vast majority of television we've seen on Disney+ that takes place in a galaxy far, far away is intrinsically tied to the Skywalker Saga in one way or another. Even "Andor" ties directly into the Rebellion and the work of Princess Leia and the people of Alderaan, and it might be the one that feels most removed. The universe of "The Mandalorian" felt separate for a while, but Luke Skywalker's appearance in season two brought it right back into the world of the classic trilogy.
For most "Star Wars" fans — myself included — this small universe phenomenon where everything is connected is a feature, not a bug. That doesn't mean it's not still refreshing to see things completely divorced from the Skywalker Saga and gives us a new window into "Star Wars," and that's exactly what Leslye Headland's murder mystery series,...

For the most part, everything in The Acolyte is brand new. It’s set before any other Star Wars story on screen, with all-new characters and worlds to explore. But, there’s one exception: Vernestra Rwoh. The one character from the High Republic novels to make the leap to live action, she’s been a fan favourite on the page for years now – and she gets a major evolution in The Acolyte.
In the High Republic books Vernestra is a prodigious 16-year-old Jedi Knight who graduated from Padawan status after passing the trials at the mere age of 15. But by the time of The Acolyte, 100 years have elapsed and she’s experienced a lot in the meantime. Empire sat down with Rebecca Henderson, who brings Vernestra to life – and who, as wife of series creator Leslye Headland, had first-hand experience of seeing The Acolyte willed into being.

The "Star Wars" and "The Matrix" franchises share an interesting history. In 1999, there was only one movie that truly mattered for geeks, and that was George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace." Everything else was an appetizer for the long-awaited return of the series that captured the imagination of a generation.
"The Matrix," which opened two months before the first "Star Wars" film in 16 years, wound up outshining "The Phantom Menace," and, though it did not outgross Lucas' film, it generated more buzz and speculation about how the Wachowskis would explore this expansive universe in future installments.
Though Keanu Reeves' Neo was the savior protagonist, the character that first grabbed our attention was Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity. She's the star of the film's dynamic opening scene, in which she defies gravity and runs up walls while taking out a quartet of cops with astonishing ease. Welcome to "The Matrix,...

Another weekend in the books, another reason to be pessimistic about the state of the box office in 2024. We are just coming off of the worst Memorial Day weekend in decades in terms of ticket sales, thanks to weak performances by both "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie." Now? With no meaningfully big movies entering the marketplace, theaters were left to suffer -- so much so that this past weekend now ranks as literally one of the worst weekends the summer box office has experienced in a quarter century.
"The Garfield Movie" held far better than "Furiosa" in its second weekend, as the animated film topped the charts with a $14 million haul. That's good for Sony, but terrible for the industry at large. When we're in the midst of the summer moviegoing season and the number one movie on a given weekend pulls in $14 million, we're in trouble.

It’s common knowledge that even the most devoted Star Wars fans carry a twinge of disappointment regarding the franchise’s prequels. Ewan McGregor, who played the iconic Obi-Wan Kenobi, is no exception.

George Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy chronicles Anakin Skywalker’s journey from Jedi to Sith along with the Galactic Republic’s descent into the Galactic Empire. Despite mixed reviews, the trilogy faced several challenges, notably in costume design, as characters evolved throughout the films, particularly Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker.

Actor John Boyega starred in three of the extant 16 "Star Wars" movies*, playing the rogue-Stormtrooper-turned-good guy Finn in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015), "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2017), and "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (2019). Boyega liked playing Finn, but has gone on record (notably in a 2020 GQ interview) about his disappointment with how the series treated his character; Finn was set up to be a leading man, and was sidelined for what appeared to be racism-based reasons. Boyega was also off-put by Disney's habit of micromanaging "Star Wars," feeling that every one of the franchise's actors ran the risk of being roped into "Star Wars" projects exclusively. "You ain't going to Disney+ me," he once laughingly said to Variety.
There hasn't been a "Star Wars" movie since 2019, as Disney+ kind of killed their Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs. The theatrical market was oversaturated, audiences didn't respond terribly well...

Starting with the 1999 film The Phantom Menace, the Emmy-winning actor Ewan McGregor took on the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas’ Star Wars saga. While he has since reprised his role multiple times over the years, even starring in a spin-off series following his character, there remains one scene that left the actor with an unsettling experience.

Back in 2018, "Dune" director Denis Villeneuve threw "Star Wars" fans into a tizzy (it doesn't take much these days) when he described his then-upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi novel as being like "'Star Wars' for adults." Of course, that's not really an insult to the franchise or its fans, because "Star Wars" creator George Lucas made no secret of the fact that "Star Wars" is intended for kids.
In fact, during a surprise appearance at Star Wars Celebration in 2017, he reiterated that the very first "Star Wars" installment, which would go on to be titled "A New Hope," was a "a film for 12-year-olds." Of course, that doesn't mean adults can't still find value in these sci-fi stories of heroism. But it also means that the franchise, from its inception, has always been molded to be appealing to children.

With just a few days to go until Star Wars: The Acolyte premiere on Disney+, the latest TV spot for the show offers a terrifying new glimpse at its mysterious Sith villain. The more we see of that helmet, the closer it looks to what Kylo Ren donned in the sequel trilogy.
Darth Vader's grandson being inspired by a powerful Sith from the past wouldn't be a huge surprise and this mysterious character clearly plays a pivotal role in bringing the Sith back to prominence.
Given The Acolyte's place in the Star Wars timeline, it still seems likely that Darth Plagueis or Darth Tenebrous is beneath the mask. However, Lucasfilm may be planning to make some significant changes to much of the lore established in Expanded Universe stories.
Thanks to Bespin Bulletin, we also have intel on the runtimes for The Acolyte's first four episodes:

One of the most exciting things about "The Acolyte" is its return to elaborate action choreography. The prequels raised the bar for what "Star Wars" fight scenes could do, giving us Jedi jumps and flips that really sold the idea of the Jedi being awesome, superhuman warriors revered throughout the galaxy. Now, "The Acolyte" is bringing wuxia martial arts action to the franchise for a new type of Jedi choreography that we've never seen before — and judging from the first trailer, we are in for a treat. Indeed, there is one fight scene in "The Acolyte" that is trying to beat the Darth Maul fight from "The Phantom Menace" and give us the best fight scene in all of "Star Wars," according to Dafne Keen.
But making "The Acolyte" was not all serious business: there was also a lot of fun to be had — especially if you played a Jedi.

More money, more problems. That seems to be the motto of Netflix’s brand new competition series, in which one contestant is saddled with a $1 million prize as the other 11 players fight to hunt them down and claim it for themselves.

The Acolyte is a show that takes place during the High Republic Era of Star Wars, which is set about one hundred years before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. This would indicate that while most of the Jedi Council that we know and despise might not be part of the show, fans could expect a certain Grandmaster of the Jedi Order to make an appearance in the show.

However, as likely as an appearance could have been, The creators of The Acolyte have made it clear that Jedi Grandmaster Yoda will not be making an appearance in the show, as director Leslye Headland and actress Amandla Stenberg confirmed. Even though Yoda would be a major figure for the Jedi Order during the time, the figure would be largely absent from something like The Acolyte, which, if trailers are to be believed,...

The actress, who starred alongside Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford in the film series, captivated the audience with her charm and her on-screen chemistry with Han Solo. However, things behind the scenes were far more complex.

In her memoir The Princess Diarist, the actress revealed her whirlwind affair with Ford while filming the 1977 film A New Hope. She revealed that they had a brief fling for three months, however, she always felt that her love for her co-star was unreciprocated, while wondering if Ford ever truly understood the depth of her feelings for him.

As George Miller’s oil and blood-fuelled Furiosa hits the screens, we ponder what makes a great prequel.
Mild spoilers for The First Omen.
There are a lot of bad prequels. There are some good prequels, but a great prequel is a rare thing to come across. They’re like a rare animal, the unicorns of cinema. Some wonder if such a thing even exists, but when you do watch one, it’s really rather something.
George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might just be one, a prequel which somehow manages to justify its existence and repeat the exhilarating sense of time and place as Mad Max: Fury Road. I’d be surprised if we saw another action film as handsomely made as Furiosa in 2024. Or 2025. Or 2026.
Prequels are an easy sell for studios, but a hard sell for audiences. For studios, they’re an easy way...

McGregor first donned the Jedi robes for the first installment of the prequel trilogy all the way back in 1999 when he was still an up-and-coming actor.
