Among DC fans, Michael Rosenbaum is notable for his portrayal of Lex Luthor in Smallville, which James Gunn previously deemed his favorite iteration of the character onscreen. Apart from Luthor, Rosenbaum has also voiced several other DC characters, including Deadman, Kid Flash, and Barry Allen, across shows like Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Teen Titans, etc.
However, his stint in the realm of superheroes isn’t just limited to DC, as thanks to his good pal Gunn, the actor landed the role of Martinex in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. But per the actor, his role in the films was initially supposed to be a lot bigger than it ended up being.

As wonderful as X-Men ’97 has been, even the most devoted Marvel Zombie has to admit that the gold standard of superhero animation remains Batman: The Animated Series. Created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, the show told some of the all-time greatest stories about the Dark Knight, and even launched an ongoing universe with Justice League, Batman Beyond, and Static Shock.
So when Warner Bros. announced Batman: Caped Crusader from Timm, fans took notice, especially with J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves on board as producers. Despite a near disaster when Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav declined to distribute the completed series, as is his wont, the show found a home on Amazon Prime Video.
Even better, we now know when the series is premiering on the streamer: Aug. 1. We also have our first look at the characters and setting of Batman: The Caped Crusader, which blends...

Keith Giffen, known both as a comic book writer and artist whose characters have appeared in live-action franchises from Marvel and DC Comics, has died. He was 70 years old and had worked in comics since 1976.
Giffen was known for having a hand in the creation of characters including Lobo, Guardians of the Galaxy furry teammate Rocket Raccoon and the modern Jaime Reyes version of Blue Beetle. He also wrote acclaimed runs of “Justice League” and the “Legion of Super-Heroes,” as well as creating the cult fourth-wall-breaking character Ambush Bug (a decade earlier than Deadpool).
He died Sunday of a stroke, according to media reports (first reported by Bleeding Cool), but the news of his death wasn’t made public until Wednesday evening.

Mark Hamill is best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the "Star Wars" films, but even if you add up all of that character's screen time, the Jedi role is tiny compared to his voice work as the Joker in the DC/Warner Bros. Animation TV series and films. He's been cackling in the scariest (and hands-down best) way since 1992 when he was cast in the role for the Emmy Award-winning animated series "Batman: The Animated Series," which was created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski.
Since that time, we've heard him mess with Batman as the Clown Prince of Crime in animated films, "Superman: The Animated Series," "The New Batman Adventures," "Static Shock," "Birds of Prey," "Justice League Action," and so many others. Like the late, great Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman, Hamill has become synonymous with the role. So it's surprising to hear that Hamill almost said no...

When The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder debuted last year on Disney+, it called back to the bygone era of Black TV sitcoms in which its 2001 Disney Channel predecessor shined. One where Black families, culture and people were not only celebrated on the small screens in living rooms across the country, but the central focal point of multiple simultaneously airing (though mostly live-action) series.
Its return on Feb. 3, however, pointed to a stunning reality. While the original series aired in the 2000s alongside a handful of animated kids shows also featuring Black leads, including Filmore!, Static Shock, Tutenstein and Little Bill, there has since been only a handful of animated shows aimed at non-adult audiences that explicitly center Black leads and, more specifically, their families.

Thirty years ago this month, Milestone Media launched and the comics world listened. Hardware #1 from legendary creators Dwayne McDuffie and Denys Cowan was the company’s first book in February 1993. It was nothing less than a statement of purpose, a book about a Black genius fighting his white industrialist boss (who’s secretly a crime lord) to get pay and recognition for his inventions.
But it wasn’t until the Static Shock cartoon launched on TV in 2004 that Milestone made a broad cultural impact. “For so many of us in that generation, Static [Shock], the cartoon, was the door that opened a lot of things up,” Jordan Clark, a member of the Milestone Initiative’s inaugural class, tells Den of Geek magazine.

Since 2018, Laurence Fishburne and his Cinema Gypsy production company have been working with Marvel Animation to create an all-new animated series based on "Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur" by Brandon Montclare, Amy Reeder, and Natacha Bustos, which was a sequel to Jack Kirby's "Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur" from 1978. The show follows 13-year-old supergenius Lunella Lafayette, who teams up with the T-rex she accidentally brought to the present day to protect the Lower East Side of New York City from danger.
Originally, the cartoon was meant to premiere on The Disney Channel in 2020, but the pandemic threw a wrench into their plans that even Lunella couldn't fix. However, now the series is finally ready to make its debut. In fact, it's even been renewed for a second season already, so there are clearly big plans in store for this new Marvel dynamic duo.

If there's one thing we know for certain about Batman, it's that the superhero has only one interpretation that works, and that any deviation from that interpretation will cause all the fans to reject the character outright. There's just no room in this world for funny versions of Batman, or grimdark versions of Batman, or futuristic versions of Batman, or young versions of Batman. At all. Ever.
(Hang on, I'm getting a note from my editor.)
Actually never mind, strike all that entirely. Because the exact opposite is true. Batman is one of the most adaptable characters in pop culture history and has been repeatedly redefined, redesigned, and reintroduced to audiences in a menagerie of different forms. Some were successful and some weren't, but none of them managed to ruin the character of Batman. Denys Cowan’s comics career spans decades. Perhaps most famous for his work on mainline DC characters like Batman and his “mature readers” take on The Question with Denny O’Neil, Cowan is also one of the architects of Milestone Media, the trailblazing company that grew out of the classic ‘90s comics publisher, Milestone Comics. While the original run of Milestone only lasted a few years, it spawned a beloved animated series (Static Shock), and is now a key imprint at DC Comics, who have recently revived much of the key characters and titles for new tales for a modern audience.

When Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav spoke to investors on Aug. 4, the very first question was about his decision, announced two days earlier, to cancel the release of DC comics adaptation “Batgirl,” taking the HBO Max production (as well as “Scoob!: Holiday Haunt”) as a tax write-down instead. If Zaslav hoped his answer might help to quell the firestorm that choice created across the industry, he appears to have done the opposite.
Zaslav made public what had been reported and rumored for months: that the company had “restructured” to create a team with a “10-year plan focusing just on DC” that would be “similar to the structure that Alan Horn and Bob Iger put together very effectively with [Marvel Studios chief] Kevin Feige at Disney.”

Green Lantern may be one of the most influential superhero movies of all time. Yes, I’m referring to 2011’s Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Mark Strong as Sinestro. Yes, really, I’m talking about the movie in which the hero first uses his superpowers to beat up blue-collar workers who he angered when his decision to show off lost them their jobs.
To see that influence, you need to look not at the big screen, but at the small screen. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Green Lantern co-writer Greg Berlanti put it plainly. “[W]hile it was heartbreaking on the film side,” Berlanti said of the movie’s failure; “it ultimately led to wonderful things on the television side.” In other words, had Green Lantern been a success, Berlanti would have been stuck continuing work on DC movies, instead of creating the Arrowverse.

Jordan in what will rep the duo’s first big movie together as stars and producers. Talk about two big stars getting together, between Smith and Jordan combined, their movies have grossed a massive $12.3 billion at the box office.
Plot details, of course, are being kept under wraps.
Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, who adapted the Richard Matheson 1954 novel, is also returning to pen the follow-up and producer as well.
All these deals are closed, I understand, and a director is not attached as of yet as the project is still being developed. Francis Lawrence directed the original 2007 movie.

The Val Zod series that Michael B. Jordan is set to executive produce for HBO Max has found its writers, Variety has confirmed.
Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters are now set to write the project, which will focus on Val Zod, the second DC character to take up the mantle of Superman. Val is a Black Kryptonian who found his way to Earth and eventually uses his powers to fight evil, including a brainwashed Superman at one point in the comics.

Exclusive: Darnell Metayer & Josh Peters are set to write Val Zod, the HBO Max adaptation that Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society is producing for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros Television.
Val Zod is the story of another Kryptonian with powers who hails from the same doomed planet as Superman. The hero is Black, and he finds refuge on Earth 2. Like the original Man of Steel, he is sheltered on his adopted planet but eventually in the comics is pitted against a brainwashed Superman.
Metayer & Peters are prolific television and feature writers who broke onto the scene with their original pilot American Snow. Their project The Nola sold to Amazon with Sam Raimi directing. Their one-hour pilot, Hannibal, based on the life of the Carthaginian general Hannibal, they scripted for Scott Free and Endeavor Content. Apple preemptively bought it with Creed II helmer Steven J. Caple Jr attached to direct.

His daughter Nicky Vennera told several media outlets he died of lung cancer.

Deadline has confirmed that DC Films no longer is developing the properties New Gods, which had Ava DuVernay attached to direct, and Aquaman spinoff The Trench, which Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald were penning for James Wan possibly to helm.
I hear The Trench is shelved due to Wan’s busy schedule with Aquaman 2, while New Gods, created by Jack Kirby, was stopped as the parameters of that project far exceeded a feature stand-alone structure. The Trench, which was to have a horror bent, was based on the creature Aquaman battles.
Warner Bros and DC Films released this statement today in regards to the projects:
“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward. We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look...

DC Films has a lot of catch-up to do behind Marvel. Still, now that the Snyderverse is seemingly officially behind them, and films like a rebooted “The Suicide Squad” are on the way, it seems like a new chapter is about to be written in its cinematic history. It’s already been reported that Michael B. Jordan and Reginald Hudlin would be producing a live-action feature film featuring “Static Shock,” a cult superhero from DC Comics and Milestone Comics.

Randy McKinnon, who broke out writing Disney+’s football drama “Safety,” will write the “Static Shock” script for DC Films and Warner Bros., according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Michael B. Jordan and Reginald Hudlin will produce the project, which was first revealed during the DC FanDome event last August.
“One of the things we’re really excited about, we really want to live up to the name of the company, Milestone Media,” Hudlin said at FanDome. “When we spoke to Jim [Lee] about reviving the Milestone line, we said, ‘Look, we all know this has been a hit comic book and hit animated series. It’s time to expand back into all those areas and then some.’ So we’re in serious conversations about, as we’re launching the comic book series, developing the ‘Static Shock’ movie. Covid-19 may have changed the way we watch movies forever. With audiences unable or unwilling to congregate in busy enclosed spaces, nearly all studios are moving their films online now and Warner Bros., in particular, are going all-in with HBO Max.
In 2021, the streaming service will premiere the studio’s biggest blockbusters on the day of their theatrical release, meaning we can enjoy movies like The Matrix 4, Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong and The Suicide Squad without leaving the comfort of our homes. After almost a decade trapped in development hell, the latest Scarface remake is finally gathering momentum. Michael B. Jordan will produce “Static Shock,” a movie adaptation of the comic book, unveiled by Reginald Hudlin during August’s DC FanDome.
Jordan revealed on Friday that he will produce the pic through his Warner Bros.-based Outlier Society banner.
Static, aka Virgil Hawkins, was created by Milestone Media and DC Comics in the 1990s. The character is a teen who transforms into a superhero with electromagnetic powers. A “Static Shock” animated series aired on Kids’ WB in the early 2000s and was one of the few superhero series starring a Black character.
“I’m proud to be a part of building a new universe centered around Black superheroes; our community deserves that,” Jordan said in a statement. “Outlier Society is committed to bringing to life diverse comic book content across all platforms and we are excited to partner with Reggie and Warner Bros. on this initial step.”

Fans were taken by surprise when it was announced at DC FanDome that a live-action Static Shock movie is now in early development, and that it’ll be a theatrical venture, not something made for HBO Max.
It was unexpected, sure, but certainly came as welcome news and while there’s still no word on casting or plot details, The Hollywood Reporter brings word tonight that none other than Michael B. Jordan will be producing the project through Outlier Society, his Warner Bros.-based banner.
Again, no word on who’ll star in the feature, but speaking about his excitement to be involved, here’s what the actor shared:
