Just the other night we got our first look at David Yates' The Legend of Tarzan, but next week will bring eager Harry Potter fans the first trailer for his spin-off film, Fantastic Beasts.
December is one of my favorite times of the year, and it's not just because of Christmas. Every year around this time, is when movie studios offer up their first looks at Next year's big movies. This month so far we've already seen X-Men: Apocalypse, The Legend of Tarzan, Batman v. Superman, and Tmnt 2. We know that Star Trek Beyond and Independence Day 2 will also have trailers coming up, and next week, Warner Bros. will give us our first look at Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them.
We've seen images of the film so far, and considering it's set in the world of Harry Potter (and written by Jk Rowling), fans are understandably eager.

After sharing the first couple of stills from the latest effort to bring Tarzan to the big screen, Warner Bros have released the trailer for the Alexander Skarsgard-starring picture – check it out below.
I’m not really sure what to make of The Legend of Tarzan. There’s far too much CGI going on here, and not all of it looks great. It’s obviously unfinished – at least, I hope it’s unfinished – so there’s improvements they can make. But the gorillas look a little weird, and Tarzan’s vine-swinging scenes remind me just a tad too much of Shia Labeouf’s similar escapades in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
There’s also the fact that most of that jungle looks ridiculously fake, which is ironic considering director David Yates comment yesterday;

Harry Potter director David Yates brings The Legend Of Tarzan to the screen. Here's the first trailer.
Already, The Legend Of Tarzan is looking like one of the biggest gambles of summer 2016. Warner Bros has spent a fair amount of change on the movie, that's being put together by four-time Harry Potter director David Yates (who's also working on Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them).
The cast features Alexander Skarsgard as Tarzan, with Margot Robbie taking on the role of Jane. Villain duties are being handled by Christoph Waltz.
Elsewhere in the cast, there's Djimon Hounsou, Samuel L Jackson and John Hurt.
The movie is currently scheduled for release in July 2016, and the first trailer for the film dropped overnight. And it's right here...
One last thing: here's the official synopsis.

Just as we suspected, not long after the posters and images were released, Warner Bros. has released its first trailer for The Legend of Tarzan! Take a look!
The Legend of Tarzan trailer shows us just how brutal the jungle can be. With savage tribes, fierce gorillas, and various poachers, it takes the likes of Tarzan to keep the jungle in order. The trailer doesn't show us too much more outside of that but we get some idea as to what each character is about but motives are not yet clear:
What we can discern is that, Christoph Waltz is using Jane to lure Tarzan. Is this another attempt to use Tarzan to take him to the gorillas to be hunted? Also, Djimon Hounsou is the leader of a tribe of savages who don't seem to keen on Tarzan returning to their jungle. Then, there's Samuel L. Jackson's character...

Warner Bros. has been trying to make a Tarzan movie for years now. Even the Coen Bros. took a shot at it at one point. While one of the main box-office trends right now has to do with the shared universes built from various intellectual properties like Star Wars or Marvel or Transformers, there's another trend that has to do with updated or revamped versions of public domain properties. Next summer, Warner is betting big on both Tarzan and King Arthur, and in both cases, I'm curious how they plan to make these different than the dozens, if not hundreds, of film versions that have come before. With King Arthur, they've got Guy Ritchie at the helm, and they're no doubt hoping that he can do for King Arthur what he did for Sherlock Holmes. Makes sense. After all, both of them are icons that every English kid is raised on,...

After the first photos from The Legend Of Tarzan dropped last night, we have to admit: there wasn't a lot that impressed us. Sensing a first trailer was going to drop in the near future, we withheld judgment on how we felt about David Yates' latest epic, and as you'll see in the trailer below, it's definitely time to get a little excited. The Legend Of Tarzan finds John Clayton III (Alexander Skarsgard,) better known to audiences as Tarzan, living the life of a civilized man. Of course, even after he's settled into Victorian London with his beloved Jane (Margot Robbie,) his heart and mind still yearn for the jungle. It isn't long before he's dragged back to the jungle, in order to face the villainous Captain Rom (Christoph Waltz,) and save the world he grew up in from the one he now calls home. Following those first couple of official stills and the poster from earlier today, Warner Bros. has released the very first teaser trailer for David Yates’ The Legend Of Tarzan, which stars True Blood actor Alexander Skarsgard in the title role.
This live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novel will take a slightly different approach than fans are used to seeing in previous versions, as it begins with Tarzan already settled in Victorian England with Jane, having reclaimed the mantle of John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke. It’s only after he’s forced to return to the Congo as an emissary of Parliament that the jungle calls him back to his animalistic roots, and a swingin’ he goes.
Not that any of this is evident from the trailer, mind you. The footage we’re given is pretty much all bared abs and ape-battles, with some mustache-twirling courtesy of Christoph Waltz...

The first full trailer for “The Legend of Tarzan” has hit the web, featuring a shirtless Alexander Skarsgard on a mission to scoop up Margot Robbie, as Jane, a decade after they left their African home behind. Images of the “True Blood” hunk’s mud-soaked abs got social media excited late Tuesday night, but the trailer offers plot depth on top of all the eye candy. Director David Yates serves up gorgeous tracking shots of Skarsgard moving from vine-to-vine, as well as glimpses at the A-list supporting stars including Oscar winner Christoph Waltz — playing the evil Belgian Captain Rom — and Samuel L. It wouldn’t be a summer tentpole season without endless reboots and sequels. Following the release of the first official images from the movie last night, the poster for The Legend of Tarzan has been revealed. As you can see, it features a bruised and bloodied Alexander Skarsgard ready to leap into action. By his side is a massive ape, giving us our first look at the CGI creatures who will also be featured in the film.
The Legend of Tarzan is set to take a very different approach to the character. While his early years will be explored in flashbacks, this story kicks off with Tarzan now better known as John Clayton III, a.k.a. Lord Greystoke. It’s been over a decade since he left his home in the Congo, and as you can tell from that new name, Tarzan has become fully entrenched as a British gentleman in 1880s Victorian London, with his beloved wife Jane (Margot Robbie) now by his side.

In the wake of the release of the first photos and poster for the film in the past day or so, the first trailer has now arrived for "The Legend of Tarzan," the upcoming new big-budget take on the classic jungle hero creation by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Featuring a ton of CG animals, CG-assisted vine swinging, stampedes and glimpses of Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson delivering the kind of usual over the top performances you expect, the film manages to be fun and a bit camp without being campy - mostly as it seems to stick to its pulpy original material and mythmaking more than you might expect. Can it work? We'll find out when the film opens July 2016.

With all the remakes and reboots of popular properties from decades past currently being made, there are, no doubt, efforts by filmmakers of all stripes to adapt those stories for modern audiences. Even if your tale will be told in the past, there is something to be said for bringing a character.s mind set into the current day a bit, to make them more accessible. And it looks like the new version of the Tarzan story, The Legend of Tarzan, will go for the same thing. The film.s director, David Yates, spoke to USA Today about how Jane will differ from how we.ve come to know her in other popular versions of the Tarzan story: [She is] in no way a passive partner to Tarzan. We now have our first look into the world of the Legend of Tarzan! Take a look at the images as well as the official movie poster!
With just a little under a year until the Legend of Tarzan swings into theaters, Warner Bros. has decided to give us a taste of David Yates' version of an old favorite. Take a look.
When it was first announced that Alexander Skarsgard would be our loin cloth apparelled hero, suffice it to say but, we were a little confused. However, seeing the way he looks in these images has, at least, convinced me that he can pull off this role. Alongside Skarsgard is none other than the usually blonde shining star Margot Robbie. With her now amber locks and tattered clothing, she seems to have embraced her inner Jane.
Of course all this is heresay as there isn't even a trailer out for it yet.

The Legend of Tarzan: Our first look at Alexander Skarsgard in The Legend of Tarzan reveals him to be a very muscular man of the jungle. The movie finds the titular character some ten years after he's returned home to England and settled into his life as Lord Greystoke, accompanied by his wife Jane (Margot Robbie). When he returns to Africa and his wife and friends are endangered, he must put on his old loincloth to save them. Look for the movie in theaters on July 1. There's no doubt about it: Alexander Skarsgård is the King of the Jungle. Wearing khaki shorts in lieu of a loincloth, the 39-year-old actor's eight-pack abs are on full display in the first two stills from Warner Bros.' movie The Legend of Tarzan, in theaters July 6. The shirtless Swede poses solo in one picture and with his co-star Margot Robbie, who plays Jane Porter, in the other picture. For some reason, she has her back to Skarsgård. She must be either unaware he's there or too nervous to look him in the eye, because those abs are insane. Director David Yates was impressed by the actor's 6-foot-4 frame. After releasing the first photos from "The Legend of Tarzan," Warner Bros. Pictures has now revealed the first poster from the film, which you can check out below.
The film is directed by David Yates and stars Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, and Djimon Hounsou.
It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.

Me Tarzan. You Jane. Both Sexy. Buy Ticket. There's probably a lot more to David Yates's "The Legend of Tarzan," which comes out July 1, 2016, but the first two photos of stars Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie are so steamy they could pass for Harlequin romance covers.
Skarsgard's "True Blood" co-star Joe Manganiello might even envy these ab shots:

Today we get our first look at Margot Robbie as Jane and Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan in Warner Bros. live action film The Legend of Tarzan. Harry Potter director David Yates is helming the movie, and thanks to USA Today, we also have some new details on the story. Here's their breakdown:
Legend takes a different approach to Tarzan than [Edgar Rice] Burroughs’ 1910s writings, the 1930s Johnny Weissmuller movies and other pop-culture adaptations that focused on the man being raised by simians and becoming lord of the jungle. Instead, the movie finds John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, a decade removed from his home in the Congo and fully entrenched as a British gentleman in 1880s Victorian London, with his beloved wife Jane (Margot Robbie) by his side. He’s left his African home behind — his early days are seen in flashbacks — but is constantly reminded of his earlier exploits and gets...

The Legend of Tarzan: Our first look at Alexander Skarsgard in The Legend of Tarzan reveals him to be a very muscular man of the jungle. The movie finds the titular character some 10 years after he's returned home to England and settled into his life as Lord Greystoke, accompanied by his wife Jane (Margot Robbie). When he returns to Africa and his wife and friends are endangered, he must put on his old loincloth to save them. Look for the movie in theaters on July 1. [USA Today]...

Despite being years in the making, and reports that the film might be one huge mess, Warner Bros' The Legend of Tarzan hasn't let anything stop it from accomplishing one goal. Apparently, that goal is to look abs-olutely stunning, as you can see in our first look at leads Alexander Skarsgard and Margo Robbie in a tender embrace. Check it out below: First Look: Alex Skarsgard & @MargotRobbie bring icon back to theaters with Legend of Tarzan https://t.co/44XM3BmnbJ pic.twitter.com/7lyxFpXgzS. Brian Truitt (@briantruitt) December 8, 2015 Let's get the obvious out of the way: Robbie and Skarsgard both look absolutely fantastic, even if they're somewhat dirtied up. Also, from the further clues that USA Today dropped alongside the photos, this scene is more than likely a flashback to Tarzan's more wild days in the jungle. This is because The Legend Of Tarzan is going to focus...

Speaking at Dcm Upfronts, Tom Linay predicts strong 2016 at UK box office; Sir John Hegarty delivers keynote.
Speaking at the annual Dcm Upfronts event, Digital Cinema Media’s annual exploration of the cinema advertising landscape, the company’s head of film Tom Linay predicted that 2016 would be the biggest year ever for family films at the UK box office, surpassing the current landmark set by 2013.
He highlighted Kung Fu Panda 3, The Jungle Book, The Secret Life Of Pets, The Bfg and Finding Dory, claiming that the latter - Disney-Pixar’s sequel to Finding Nemo - should be the biggest animated release of the year.
He added that the year’s animation slate would be comprised of both strong franchise entries and original properties, suggesting that Illumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life Of Pets, the company behind the Despicable Me and Minions films, and Disney’s Moana were likely to both perform strongly.

Also included in our latest round-up are Blu-ray release details and cover art for Troma's The Toxic Avenger: Part II and Class Of Nuke ’Em High 2: Subhumanoid Meltdown, as well as details on an upcoming auction of film props from make-up effects mastermind Rick Baker.
Stuck On You and Other Prime Cuts: "A word of caution gentle reader, these tales will take you places you’ve never been before and may never dare revisit. They’ll whisper truths so twisted you can only face them in the darkest hours of the night. They’ll unlock desires so decadent you’ll never wash their taint from your flesh.

It is the responsibility of the working film critic not only to see and review as many new releases as possible, but also to constantly revisit films in order to challenge one’s own opinions. Moreover, it is important to review those films as you would any other film, no matter whether you once loved it or hated it. Considering how many movies are constantly available to audiences today, every film should be considered new to someone. Critics should take it upon themselves to form new opinions of even the most revered movies, and to always remind themselves and their audiences that films do not belong on shelves. They must be seen and shared and constantly re-examined. My kids have started asking me questions about Tarzan. Certain characters hold such a permanent place in pop culture that even when there's nothing new in theaters or on TV, the character remains in the mass consciousness somehow.

Have you ever seen sex, lies and videotape? Steven Sodebergh won the Palme D'Or at Cannes for his very first film and somehow it wasn't all downhill from there. The film, which was a minor box office hit, was crucial in planting the seeds for the American indie boom of the 1990s but when Oscar nominations rolled around the Academy played it very safe largely shunning both of the year's most provocative critical darlings (the other being Do the Right Thing which we honored earlier this summer in a post just like this one). I spotted these Fyc ads on eBay and thought I'd share them.

Best Supporting Actor Oscar Predictions 2014 (photo: Jared Leto in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’) As explained in our previous Oscar 2014 predictions post, this year’s Academy Award nominations in the Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories initially looked impossible to predict. For Best Supporting Actor, Jared Leto was the front-runner for his performance as a transsexual with AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club, and Michael Fassbender was another strong possibility for his evil planter in 12 Years a Slave — but who else? (See also: "Oscar Predictions 2014 Best Actress: Meryl Streep Possibly to Break Another Record," "Oscar Predictions 2014 Best Actor: Robert Redford Possible Near-Record," "Best Supporting Actress 2014 Oscar Predictions: Jennifer Lawrence and/or Scarlett Johansson to Make Oscar History?" and "Oscar Predictions 2014: Best Picture, Best Director.") A couple of weeks ago, the SAG Award nominations helped to clarify things some, but, just as in the Best Supporting Actress category, there remains quite...

For a movie who’s most famous tag line is “there can be only one,” there are sure a ton of Highlander sequels, TV spinoffs (live action and animated), novels, comic books, and reboots. But that should come as no surprise; this is Hollywood, and the immortal Scottish swordsman epic is one of the most indelible franchises of the past 30 years.
The original Highlander arrived in 1986, and is easily the most hallowed of all Highlander properties, featuring the holy triumvirate of genre stars: Christopher Lambert (NCIS: La, Greystoke: The Legend Of Tarzan, Lord Of The Apes, Mortal Kombat), Sean Connery (The James Bond, Dr. Jones, The Rock, The Untouchables, The Hunt For Red October), and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption, Starship Troopers, ER, Flubber, Pet Sematary II, John Dies At The End, and ubiquitous voice actor). The hit spawned Highlander 2: The Quickening (1991), a TV show starring Adrian Paul that...

I've talked about Foxygen on here before, but the psych-rock band's drummer Shaun Fleming has stepped out solo under the name Diane Coffee and now I'm kinda smitten with it, too. Had HitFix been born under different auspices, we would have already written about Fleming on his own. He used to be a voice actor for family shows and TV movies like "Kim Possible," "The Legend of Tarzan" and "Lilo and Stitch." And now he's spread out into this glam-rock meeting green, bratty pop amalgam for Diane Coffee's debut "My Friend Fish," out Oct. 29. "Never Lonely" is my favorite of...
