George Miller is the master of the modern myth. His sprawling "Mad Max" franchise now includes five feature films, novelizations, a comic book series, and two video games — all helping expand a post-apocalyptic Wasteland loaded with lore, characters, and laws different from our own. "Furiosa" serves as a prequel to "Fury Road," but a continuation of the story started in the first "Mad Max" film from 1979. As an audience, we know where Imperator Furiosa's story ends up, but "Furiosa" will show us how she got there.
One of the hardest things about making a prequel is ensuring that there are still stakes to the story at hand, knowing that what comes after has already been established. Sometimes it works, like with "The Hunger Games: The Battle of Songbirds & Snakes," but more often than not, the delivery is more akin to "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas," "Dumb and Dumberer," or depending on who you ask,...

The more things change, the more the Hollywood studios stay the same. At least that’s one of the surprising lessons of Barbenheimer, Sound of Freedom, Indiana Jones 5, Mission: Impossible 7, Fast and the Furious 10, and the other big-budget summer box office bets trying to help the movie business pull off a historic comeback.
Twenty years ago, we wrote a book, Open Wide, about a battle at the multiplex on the weekend of July 4, 2003, for the hearts, minds and dollars of the American public. In some respects, nothing has changed. The showdown that July weekend two decades ago pitted pink against black, and a sparkly self-actualized blonde heroine against a grim avatar of thermonuclear war.

With so many horrible sequels available, picking the ten worst sequels of all time was challenging. Indeed, there have been numerous instances where sequels have fallen far short of their original counterparts, making them infamous examples of ‘how not to do a sequel.’
Thankfully, viewers on IMDb did most of the work for us, sharing their valuable insights and ratings, which we’ve used to compile this list.
What follows is a painstakingly curated breakdown of each terrible sequel. We delve into what specifically made these follow-ups lackluster and disappointing. Some of these sequels found their unfortunate place on this list despite being birthed from incredibly successful and well-received franchises.
They had every ingredient for success – a captive audience, proven characters, and established lore, yet they managed to fumble. Conversely, others continued on an already rocky path of subpar predecessor films, cementing their series as characterized by chronic cinematic failure.

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. A new year has finally arrived and HBO Max is set to open it with a bang. With its list of new releases for January 2022, HBO Max is rolling out some intriguing original series and an absolutely packed slate of library titles.
The real highlight this month comes on Jan. 13 with the release of Peacemaker. Developed by James Gunn, this series spins off John Cena’s titular character from last years’ The Suicide Squad. The show will delve into the pathology of a superhero who will achieve peace regardless of how many people need to be killed to attain it.
Also of note this month are second seasons for two major HBO series. Euphoria season 2 and The Righteous Gemstones season 2 both premiere on Jan. 9, making for quite the odd double feature. Meanwhile, the fifth and final season of superb comedy Search Party arrives on Jan. 7.
January 2022 is light as far as original movies go.

It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.
Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.
Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

There are only two months left to go in this truly hellish year and relatively new streaming service HBO Max is trying to make the best of them. While most other streamers recover from Halloween and get prepared for Christmas, HBO Max is using November 2020 to fill out its servers.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Attention all horror fans! If you’re in the mood to celebrate a summer full of screams, Amazon Prime has you covered. The streaming service is adding a ton of genre movies to its selection this month, including supernatural superhero flicks, time traveling psychological thrillers and renowned occult classics.
Below, we take a look at some of the more high profile horror features coming soon to a streaming box near you:
Hellboy (July 23)
Don’t say we didn’t warn you. This year’s much-maligned Hellboy reboot is headed directly to Amazon Prime, less than three months after it unceremoniously left theaters. Maybe streaming from your living room, surrounded by a bunch of friends with a couple of beers in hand is the best possible way to view this. Besides, it’ll be a nice primer on the character before Netflix reboots the series a third time in the near future.

Here's everything coming to Amazon Prime instant video in July 2019!
Amazon Prime is on a good pace of releasing at least one notable original series per month. For Amazon Prime's new releases for July 2019, that honor goes to dark superhero dramedy The Boys.
The series, based on the Garth Ennis book of the same name, stars Karl Urban and arrives on July 26. And that's about it for Amazon's originals! Unless you are a big All or Nothing fan.
And that's alright as the movie offerings for July should keep plenty of folks occupied. David Robert Mitchell's moody It Follows followup Under the Silver Lake arrives on July 1. Gone Baby Gone, Hellboy, and Serenity all arrive mid-month.
Then as new traditions demand, the lion's share of content arrives at the end of the month. Rosemary's Baby, Corpse Bride, and Dumb and Dumber premiere on July 31 - an...

What's the only thing worse than a sequel? The only prospect worse than paying £10 at your local cinema to have your favourite movie ruined, forever. The answer has three words. Straight-to-video.
In the '90s, home release sequels became fairly common. You'd greet them with surprise at your local Blockbusters and then want to pull your eyeballs out when you took them home and watched them. They're probably called straight-to-dvd or straight-to-Blu-ray now, but they still exist.
With the announcement that Dolph Lundgren will be starring in Kindergarten Cop 2 (because of course), here are 21 absolute stinking sequels - the vast majority of which weren't even considered good enough for the cinema. How many of them have you watched?
1. American Pie Presents: Band Camp
2. American Pie Presents: Beta House

Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey reach the end of the line in this woefully unfunny follow-up to their 1994 hit
During the end credits of this belated follow-up to 1994’s gleefully low-brow Dumb and Dumber, there’s a montage juxtaposing scenes from the sequel with snippets from the unexpectedly hilarious original. It’s a cruel gag, seemingly designed to remind you how funny you once found these jokes and how wretchedly turgid they now seem. Throughout the snot bubbles, urine bags and ageing crotch gags of the Farrellys’ latest, I counted a mere three chuckles (one of which I’m fairly sure was unintentional), leaving this several smiles shy of even the widely panned 2003 prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.
All of which is a crushing disappointment, because frankly I would love to have laughed all the way up to the ceiling (like Mary Poppins’s Uncle Albert) at...

While it may be strange to think that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 failed to live up to the financial openings of the previous two films, it did not stop it from being the biggest box office opening weekend of 2014. At an estimated $123 million, it trounced the big four Marvel entries of the year, the reboot of Godzilla, and even Transformers: Age of Extinction, though it has yet to release budget numbers for reasons unknown. With numbers like that, it is well on its way to being the highest grosser of the year, if its numbers hold (even if it is getting slightly less critical praise than the previous entries).
Comparatively, the rest of the competition could barely tread water, despite not doing all that poorly compared to the previous week. Big Hero 6 (estimated $20.1 million) came back against Dumb and Dumber To (which fell to fourth with an...

Update Sunday, 8:17 a.m.: Conventional wisdom holds that you don’t release sequels two decades apart, particularly in a lightning-bottle genre like comedy. But wisdom has never held much sway in the Dumb and Dumber franchise, which returned after a two-decade dormancy to engage in a nip-and-tuck battle with Big Hero 6 that underscored the muscle of raunch this year at the box office.
Dumb and Dumber To looked to take the derby this weekend from a BH6 in its sophomore frame, though Hero’s repeat-viewing younger audiences could still propel it to a follow-up victory when actuals are reported Monday. Still, Universal turned its $30M Ddt into a contender with a “deja-view” strategy that worked the last time Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels got together: gross-out audience, out-gross competitors.

Dumb and Dumber To
Notable: This marks the first film since Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) where Jim Carrey reprises his character from a previous film.
It’s not going to be as good as the first one, we all know this. I think the joy in watching this sequel would be the performances by Carrey and Daniels. They look to be giving it their all even if the script went a little too far in terms of stupid. They couldn’t capture the same tone and timing as the first one, that much is clear from the trailer and TV spots. At least...

Nearly 20 years later, a sequel to Dumb and Dumber finally arrives in theaters this weekend.Playing at 3,153 locations, Dumb and Dumber To could be in a close race for first place against holdovers Big Hero 6 and Interstellar.Relativity Media is also releasing Beyond the Lights at 1,789 locations, while Birdman is expanding nationwide after four strong weeks in limited release. It's also a busy weekend at the specialty box office, with Saving Christmas, Rosewater, Foxcatcher and The Homesman all debuting.Dumb and Dumber arrived at the end of 1994, which capped a year in which Jim Carrey went from unknown to A-list in remarkably quick fashion. Earlier that year, Carrey starred in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask, which earned $72.2 million and $119.9 million, respectively. Dumb and Dumber would prove to be an even bigger hit with $127.2 million, or the equivalent of over $240 million today. For the next decade, Jim Carrey...

It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels (who, it should be noted, got billing above the one-time box office titan) donned ridiculously bad tuxedoes and charmed the world with the non-stop stupidity of "Dumb and Dumber." But, this being the Hollywood of 2014, which is desperate to revive any property, no matter how old or irrelevant, just because of passing name recognition (there was, we should remember, a "Red Dawn" remake), Harry (Daniels) and Lloyd (Carrey) are back and dumber than ever in "Dumb and Dumber To."
In this long-overdue sequel, Harry and Lloyd are attempting to track down Harry's long-lost daughter, since he is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. So, of course, a wacky road trip comedy ensues, and plenty of gross-out humor is to be had.

Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003) Director: Troy Miller Stars: Eric Christian Olsen, Derek Richardson, Shia LeBeouf Before Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne were older and stupid, they were also younger and stupid. It's not so much that Dumb And Dumberer is bad.it's plenty terrible.it's that it's completely, utterly pointless. Needless cash-grab or not, it wouldn't be impossible to make at least a decently funny movie out of this. There are plenty of...

The stars of 'Dumb and Dumber To' tell Et about some of the stupidest things they've done in their lives.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels first came together playing the lovable idiots Harry and Lloyd years ago in the beloved Farrelly brothers' comedy Dumb and Dumber. Now, two decades later, Harry and Lloyd are hitting the big screens again with Dumb and Dumber To. (For the sake of our sanity, let's just ignore the ill-advised prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd).
Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels and the Mutt Cutts van all reunited in person at the premiere of Dumb and Dumber To in Westwood, Calif. on Monday. Jim and Jeff came decked out in classier versions of their infamously terrible tuxes from the first film, arriving to the premiere in the iconic furry van.

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.
On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production...

Sometimes it's easy to forget that this year brings a long overdue "Dumb and Dumber" sequel (titled, appropriately, "Dumb and Dumber To"), 20 years after the original. But in case this had slipped your mind, Universal has debuted a pair of teaser posters that, in the words of Vulture, are "pretty perfect."
Both posters feature a simple image: one of the garish tuxedoes that Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) wore in the first movie, quite memorably. The posters are accompanied by two wonderfully chosen words: "Dumbing Soon." Yes.
According to the official plot synopsis, it features the two idiots looking for their long lost children "in the hope of gaining a new kidney." So it will maintain the road trip movie feel of the first film, with a whole bunch of additional nuttiness. Original writer/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly are back (along with about sixteen other writers, who...

Dumb and Dumber stands the test of time, for some of us, as one of Jim Carrey’s most absurd and hilarious comedies. The prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd was one of the worst pieces of drivel to ever hit theatres. Clearly I’m hoping that Dumb and Dumber To will take after the first film, and the fact that the original cast has returned will go a long way to making my hope a reality.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their signature roles as Lloyd and Harry in the sequel to the smash hit that took the physical comedy and kicked it in the nuts: Dumb and Dumber To. The original film’s directors, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, take Lloyd and Harry on a road trip to find a child Harry never knew he had and the responsibility neither should ever, ever be given.

Just as Jeff Daniels promised in the Emmys press room, he followed up his Newsroom win by heading right to the set of Dumb and Dumber 2! Jeff teamed up with his partner in crime Jim Carrey to share some amazing photos of them back in character as Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas on the set this morning. They also launched an official DumbTo Instagram account, so hopefully that means we'll be seeing a lot more of their antics filming the follow-up to their 1994 comedy. There was a prequel, Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd, that did not star Jim and Jeff, so Dumb and Dumber fans have been waiting a whole 10 years for this. As for whether they'll be returning to Aspen, where the beer flows like wine, we'll have to wait and see.

It's been ten years since the disappointing prequel, Dumb And Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd. More importantly, it's been 19 years since Dumb And Dumber, the laxative-fuelled farce that made millions laugh uproariously (and want to buy a dog-shaped car) back in 1994. Next year comes Dumb And Dumber To, the long-awaited sequel from The Farrelly Brothers that reunites Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey with their alter egos, Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas. And if you were looking for proof that it's actually happening, check out Carrey's toothy grin above.Tweeted via his WhoSay account, it's the closest the world's come to a still from the project, which has gone through a long period of production trouble. There's obviously a market out there for sequels — just look at the summer movie release schedule and you'll find at least one a week. And hey, sometimes a film leaves us wondering what happens next.
But sometimes there are films that had no need for a part two, where audiences left the theater the first go-round and said, "I'm good." And in the case of these ten films, we've got the numbers to prove it!
Hollywood, heed our wisdom: Sometimes it's best to just leave well enough alone.
10. 'Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights' (2004) — Sequel to 'Dirty Dancing' (1987)
• "Dirty Dancing": $62,811,299
• "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights": $14,140,215
So you had the time of your life in 1987? Big deal. You can't relive the magic 17 years later by conceiving a half-hearted retread set against the backdrop of revolutionary Cuba. Really, this film has nothing to do with the original, save for a brief Patrick Swayze cameo.

While promoting his super pretentious HBO series "The Newsroom" on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," Jeff Daniels, who at this point should be deemed a national treasure, told Fallon that he would indeed be back for a sequel to "Dumb and Dumber" (which by all accounts is being called "Dumb and Dumber To"). While Fallon essentially levitated out of his chair when Daniels confirmed the sequel's existence, he did temper that enthusiasm by saying, "I'll believe it when I'm staring Jim Carrey in the face." Awwww. So bromantic!
Daniels said that the movie starts shooting in September and will be out next year, in time for the original film's 20th anniversary, which is both incredibly cool and also made us feel about a million years old. "We're middle aged, we're not pretending we're not, and we're still that stupid," Daniels confirmed. (This elicited a response that looked like someone set off a firecracker inside Fallon.

Jeff Daniels has revealed that Dumb and Dumber To will start production in September.
The Newsroom actor told Jimmy Fallon that the long-awaited Farrelly brothers project will finally begin shooting in the autumn.
Warner Bros was originally scheduled to produce the comedy sequel, before Universal acquired the rights earlier this month.
"I'll believe it's happening when I'm there staring at Jim Carrey, but looks likes we're starting in September," Daniels said.
"It'll be so great to be with Jim again, and the two of us back together. It'll be the 20th anniversary of the first one next year when it's released."
Daniels said of the film's plot: "I've seen the script. It's hysterical.
"We're middle-aged, we're not pretending we aren't. We're middle-aged and we're still that stupid."
1994's Dumb and Dumber cost $14 million (£9 million) and went on to gross $247 million (£158 million). 2003 prequel Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd did not feature the original stars.

Warner Bros passed on the project last week.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are on board to return for the new movie, which would see the pair hit the road in search of the latter's illegitimate daughter for a kidney transplant.
Bobby Farrelly also told Digital Spy last year that the sequel will be set 20 years after the first film.
