The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl is one of those movies that’s so bad it’s good, holding a special place in the hearts of 2000s kids despite being trashed by critics at the time. Its comeback story is nothing short of miraculous. Like many masterpieces, it didn’t initially win over audiences, with its disappointing box office performance and a measly 19% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, in the hearts of 2000s kids, it remains forever youthful, a nostalgic treasure trove to revisit childhood memories. Actress Sasha Pieterse, who starred in the film as Marissa, the Ice Princess, recently admitted it’s one movie she’s embarrassed about in her career, for obvious reasons.

This article contains spoilers for "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."
The latest "Ant-Man" film is easily the most divisive of the three, making headlines for being one of the only two Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to get a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. There are plenty of possible reasons for this: maybe it's because the CGI was questionable, or because a lot of the jokes fell flat, or because viewers didn't connect to the main characters this time around. Or maybe it was because of Modok, the giant-headed monstrosity that the poor villain from the first film has been turned into.
It's a weird return for Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), a character who was always evil but was never this pathetic or unsettling. He once had the proportions of a normal man, but now he's just a giant head attached to tiny little arms and legs. It's a character design reminiscent of Mr.

In June 2005, the world saw a unique, child-friendly, wholesome movie with heavy doses of CGI. That movie, of course, was The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D, which also went with several simpler names like The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, or, Sharkboy and Lavagirl. For the sake of simplicity, we would refer to the movie by the name The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl, or sometimes with the acronym Tasl; this is to avoid confusion with the two protagonists of the movie – Sharkboy and Lavagirl. The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl was perhaps one of the most

HBO Max may (hopefully) be done randomly pulling original series from the service, but there are still a number of TV shows and films due to leave HBO Max in January as part of the regularly scheduled shuffling.
Multiple seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” will leave HBO Max on Jan. 3, so get those final binge-watches in Asap. And the beloved WB series “Everwood” is due to depart on Jan. 21 if you feel like seeing what young Chris Pratt was up to in the early 2000s.
In terms of movies leaving HBO Max, there are quite a lot. “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” turns into a ghost on Jan. 20, while Jon M. Chu’s delightful musical “In the Heights” leaves on Jan. 27.
Noteworthy films leaving HBO Max on Jan. 31 include the first three “John Wick” movies, the first three “Jurassic Park” films, the first two installments in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise,...

Carmen and Juni Cortez, welcome to Netflix.
The streamer has closed a deal to reboot “Spy Kids,” the early 2000s action-adventure franchise about a family of super-secret agents. Skydance Media had recently optioned the rights to “Spy Kids” with the intention to reimagine the franchise for today’s audiences, but the film has newly landed at Netflix. The still-untitled movie will premiere on a yet-to-be-determined date.
Spyglass Media owns the “Spy Kids” franchise and remains on board. Robert Rodriguez, who created the original series, has returned for the upcoming reboot, which he will write and direct. Plot details have not been revealed, but the next generation of “Spy Kids” will revolve around the activities of a multicultural family.
The original “Spy Kids” movie centered on Carmen and Juni Cortez (Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara), two young kids unaware that their parents (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) work for the Organization of Super Spies.

In “Slash/Back,” something sinister from outer space lands a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle, and humanity’s first line of defense proves to be a group of Inuit girls armed with nothing but their wits and a bunch of traditional hunting and fishing tools. In most low-budget alien-invasion movies, the heroes/victims are fairly generic, whereas the extra-terrestrial threat is what draws the crowd. But Native helmer Nyla Innuksuk (who co-wrote with Ryan Cavan) turns that equation inside-out, making this spunky band of save-the-world teens the main reason to see her movie — although the novel far-north location and reasonably fresh monster effects don’t hurt.
Innuksuk shot her debut in and around Pangnirtung, a tiny fishing community in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, where the sun never sets. Surrounded by snowy tundra, this gorgeous, remote location looks out on distant mountains, suggesting a less-intense version of John Carpenter...

Robert Rodriguez famously made his first feature, “El Mariachi” (1993), for $7,000, and in the years since he’s made a point, rather charmingly, of staying in touch with that DIY side of himself. This first became apparent in the early 2000s, when he churned out three “Spy Kids” films in a row, working out of a home studio where he wrote, directed, edited, and shot these cheeky Bondian kiddie flicks with a gizmoid invention as airy and frictionless as the films’ homegrown FX — but in a way it all played as a sly poke at Hollywood becoming a big-budget toy factory. The joke still had a tinge of resonance in “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D” (2005), a superhero lark that had the benefit of coming out three years before “Iron Man” — that is, before the culture became so inundated with comic-book mythology that it began to wink at its own top-heavy escapism.

Netflix has revealed the first look at “We Can Be Heroes,” the next film from director Robert Rodriguez that stars “The Mandalorian” actor Pedro Pascal and is a return to the same fantasy world imagined in the director’s “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D.”
“We Can Be Heroes” stars Pascal alongside YaYa Gosselin, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christian Slater, Boyd Holbrook, Christopher McDonald and Adriana Barraza. And the film is a superhero story about alien invaders who kidnap Earth’s superheroes, forcing the heroes children to step up and save their parents and save the world.

Robert Rodriguez is one of those directors that everybody has heard of, but nobody really gets. Most viewers want to firmly decide whether they love or hate Rodriguez. After all, he directed El mariachi, Desperado, and From Dusk Till Dawn. He also worked alongside Frank Miller on Sin City. If you forget the Spy Kids franchise, or chalk it up as his good deed for children, that’s a pretty solid list of credits. All of those movies warrant a second watch.
He’s also become the hipster filmmaker hero, after he released his book “Rebel Without a Crew.” Just about every aspiring filmmaker has read this Rodriguez’s tale of run-n-gun shooting. Spike Lee recommends the book to his students at Nyu.
But, then comes along The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D, Grindhouse and the subsequent film Planet Terror and you have to ask yourself one question. What is this guy really doing?...

If you've ever questioned why Taylor Lautner is a mega-star, you need to check out this old audition tape from nearly 10 years ago. In the video, Taylor, who was probably about 12 years old, is auditioning for The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D and is too cute. We've seriously never seen such charisma (except from Justin Bieber). In fact, Taylor was so good, the director didn't want to see any kids after him! Watch the video and be amazed!

Los Angeles (Reuters) - To legions of teenage girls and fans of the "Twilight" films, Taylor Lautner will always be known as Jacob Black, the werewolf who competes with a vampire for the love of a young woman.
But on Friday, the boyishly handsome actor with the six-pack strong abdomen hopes to broaden his appeal to wider audiences, headlining movie marquees on his own for the very first time in action thriller "Abduction."
Lautner, 19, finds himself the sole person on the movie's poster with his name above the title -- a major fete for any actor in Hollywood. And he must prove not only that he can draw audiences to box offices, but also that Lautner -- like Cruise or Pitt or Clooney before him -- can be a powerful brand name.

2008 was a simpler time for Taylor Lautner. Still known primarily as the kid from "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D," the biggest concern for the then-16-year-old (egads!) wasn't yet relentless paparazzi and hardcore fans, but rather, the itchiness of his "Twilight" wig.
But even now with his increasingly-hectic life, the star is taking time to join us this Wednesday (April 13) for "MTV First: Taylor Lautner" for an interview, in which he'll take questions from fans and premiere the trailer for his upcoming action flick, "Abduction."
We've come to have a lot of our own fond memories of Taylor over these past few years, so in preparation for his special, we've been counting down our top five favorite MTV moments with Taylor. Thurs far we've looked back at his Gross(man) encounter of a Les kind, as well as his his ab-off with co-star Robert Pattinson, and a run-in with an inked-up Twi-hard.

Looks like Robert Rodriguez will once again continue his pattern of alternating between violent films for adults and goofy comedies for kids over the next couple of years, as Spy Kids 4 is currently being set up at Dimension Films with a potential release date of August 19th, 2011. Last year, Rodriguez released the family adventure film Shorts, and now this year he is producing Predators and co-directing Machete. Before that it was Planet Terror, preceded by The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D. The last Spy Kids movie was Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, which was released back in 2003. Rodriguez was slightly ahead of the curve with the whole 3-D trend, so it only makes sense that Spy Kids 4 should also be a 3-D film. The full title is Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, and Rodriguez himself has described it as a reboot of sorts,...

Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance "Twilight" took a bite out of the People's Choice Awards on Wednesday (January 6), receiving not only four statuettes, but quite a good-natured ribbing from host Queen Latifah.
Midway through the telecast, Latifah strolled through the audience, stopping at 17-year-old Taylor Lautner's seat to ask for a photo. "You look so different with clothes on," Latifah observed. George Lopez, a presenter and Lautner's co-star in "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D," also got in on the act. "Dude, you're my screen saver. I love you so much," he joked. The National Lampoon production company, Clubhouse, has signed an ensemble cast of teenage actors to its comedy National Lampoon Clubhouse Trick or Treat. Taylor Dooley (The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D), Jake Thomas (Lizzie McGuire), Nikki Griffin (Fox's The O.C.) and Matthew Lawrence (The Hot Chick) have joined the cast. Robert Carradine and Vanessa Angel also star. In the film, a 15-year-old boy is grounded on Halloween and stays home to baby-sit his brother and sister. They soon find that their old house is haunted, complete with a secret passage that leads them on a wild Scooby Doo- and Beetlejuice-type adventure.
Most doting parents would be content to display their child's handiwork on the fridge.
Never one to settle for the conventional, prolific filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has turned the characters and stories dreamt up by his 7-year-old son Racer Max into a full-fledged, three-dimensional fantasy adventure.
Emerging as a sort of Sin City Jr., the comic book stylings of The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D make for an often imaginative though less than magical family feature.
Rodriguez, who first made audiences don the funny glasses for Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, works with the latest technologies and teams of visual effects and digital design houses to deliver the end product, which ultimately has the pleasantly clunky charm of a very elaborate show-and-tell project.
The kiddies should still enjoy themselves, provided they don't lose their glasses, generating respectable though likely not franchise-worthy numbers.
Shaping his son's "stories and dreams" into a screenplay, Rodriguez, officially credited along with his brother Marcel, has created a " 'Wizard of Oz'-type" scenario involving a 10-year-old boy named Max (Cayden Boyd) who deals with taunting classmates and his unhappy parents (David Arquette and Kristin Davis) by escaping into a vivid fantasy life.
It's the only place one can find Planet Drool, home to Sharkboy (Taylor Lautner), a lad who was lost at sea and raised by sharks, growing up to become half-boy and half-shark, and Lavagirl (Taylor Dooley), a young flame fatale with a particularly hot touch.
But one day at school, Max makes believers out of the skeptics when Sharkboy and Lavagirl show up in Mr. Electricidad's (George Lopez) class, needing Max's assistance back on their home turf, where the villainous Mr. Electric (Lopez again) is plotting to forever do away with all manner of dreaming.
Will Max be able to save the day? Or is it just all one big dream?
To answer those questions, Rodriguez has created a wondrous theme park of a greenscreen universe, complete with wild roller coasters, aggressive Plug Hounds and the extremely gooey Land of Milk and Cookies, not to mention vivid Trains of Thought and Streams of Consciousness.
Despite those whimsical touches, the 3-D aspect is fairly unremarkable, and the plotting is definitely on the undernourished side. At its most substantial, the picture suggests a more cost-effective Polar Express.
Handling their various roles with conviction, the spirited young cast keeps everything grounded. Lopez, meanwhile, doesn't seem to be in his comfort zone playing diabolical heavies.
Behind the scenes, the ever-multitasking Rodriguez -- he also receives producer (along with his wife, Elizabeth Avellan), cinematography, editing and composer credits -- applies his usual creative stamp while achieving the requisite out-of-this-world look with the help of a virtual who's who of effects outfits, including Industrial Light + Magic, KNB EFX Group, Cafe FX, Hybride Technologies, the Orphanage, Amalgamated Pixels, Hy*drau*lx, Intelligent Creatures, R!ot, Tippett and Rodriguez's own Troublemaker Digital Studios.

20th Century Fox's Mr. & Mrs. Smith went to the top of the charts at the boxoffice this past weekend, targeting a higher-than-anticipated $50.3 million on its debut. The aim was true for the Regency Enterprises production, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and helmed by Doug Liman, as the opening for the romantic action-adventure film proved a personal best for the stars and the director. The weekend's three other wide releases, however, were not as fortunate. Dimension's The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl landed in the fifth slot with a moderate $12.6 million, while Paramount's The Honeymooners checked in with a discouraging $5.5 million and Lions Gate's High Tension arrived in the 10th spot with little attention from moviegoers and $1.9 million. Solid holdovers held the second through fourth spots. DreamWorks' Madagascar was in second place with $17.2 million, down a moderate 39% in its third frame. The animated family comedy has captured a sterling $128.4 million in 17 days.

Actress Kristin Davis faced a tough line of questioning during a visit to David Letterman's chat show on Wednesday night, when she was quizzed about pal Cynthia Nixon's lesbian relationship. Davis appeared on the show to promote her new movie The Adventures Of Shark Boy & Lava Girl In 3-D, but within minutes of taking a seat, Letterman grilled her about Nixon's romance with Christine Marinoni. When Letterman enquired if Nixon is a lesbian or if she's "just visiting", Davis answered, "I don't personally know but I think she says that she doesn't need a label. Doesn't need one, isn't concerned about it..." The funnyman also raised a laugh when he asked if Danny Mozes, the father of Nixon's two children, "turned" also, before admitting of Nixon's romance, "In a way, it's kind of hot." While Davis is heterosexual, she informed Letterman she would "never say never" to the idea of one day having a relationship with a woman herself.

LAS VEGAS -- George Lucas is such a fan of the latest 3-D technology that he is planning to remaster all of the Star Wars films for rerelease in 3-D. Appearing as part of a sextet of high-profile directors promoting 3-D and digital cinema at ShoWest on Thursday, Lucas said he hadn't yet committed to a precise schedule but hoped to have the first film ready for the 30th anniversary of the original Star Wars movie in 2007 and that he would then rerelease one Star Wars film per year in 3-D. Lucas was joined by James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Robert Rodriguez and Randal Kleiser. Peter Jackson joined the group via a pretaped 3-D segment. They all implored the exhibition community to invest in digital projectors, which would allow theaters to show their upcoming movies in 3-D. Cameron is in preproduction on the 3-D film Battle Angel, planned for a 2007 release. Zemeckis has two 3-D features in production, and Rodriguez is readying The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl in 3-D for release in the summer. Jackson, who is currently filming King Kong announced no specific 3-D plans, but according to sources he has installed a 3-D master suite in his production offices in New Zealand.
