Tina Fey, the American actress known for “Saturday Night Live,” “Mean Girls,” “30 Rock,” and “Date Night,” stands at 5 feet 4 ½ inches (163.8 cm). This information comes directly from Fey, who corrected a common misconception about her height in an interview with the Cincinnati Enquirer, saying, “The Internet says I’m 5-foot-2. And I’m 5-4 and a half.”
She also mentioned her height in Glam in 2008. For context, the average American woman is around 5 feet 4 inches (162.5 cm). Therefore, Fey’s height is just slightly above this average, aligning her closely with the height of many American women.

Seth Meyers has got plenty more “A Closer Look”s coming. The SNL star-turned-late-night-talk-show-host has signed on to stay seated behind the desk of NBC’s Late Night through 2028.
NBCUniversal just announced the show’s renewal, alongside news that Meyers’ production company, Sethmaker Shoemeyers, has also extended its contract to continue creating content across the network’s many platforms.
Meyers has spent the bulk of his career working within 30 Rock. The comedian joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2001, and was promoted to writing supervisor four years later. In 2005, Meyers began serving as SNL’s co-head writer alongside Tina Fey and Andrew Steele. When Fey departed the legendary sketch series in 2006, he took over her spot on “Weekend Update” and served as the show’s sole head writer for the next season.
Meyers, ever the workhorse, performed his final episode of SNL on February 1, 2014.

Looking at the crop of new scripted series selected by the broadcast networks for 2024-25, one cannot help but reminisce about the 20th anniversary of what may have been broadcast television’s greatest season ever.
The 2004-05 season introduced several genre-defying series — all but one based on original ideas — whose impact on TV storytelling is still being felt: Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, House, The Office and Veronica Mars. Remarkably, one of them, Grey’s Anatomy is still around, having just been renewed by ABC for Season 21, along with another show that premiered that same season, animated comedy American Dad!.
Aside from the fact that the current economic realities of the TV business will likely never support another drama going to 21 seasons, broadcast networks will also likely never take chances on so many unconventional ideas: a sci-fi drama on a deserted island that set the tone for modern genre fare, a...

For her third round of hosting duties on “Saturday Night Live,” “Mother” Maya Rudolph did not disappoint. Having been a cast member from 2000 to 2007, Rudolph is well acquainted with that 30 Rock stage, and has played a litany of memorable characters. In honor of Mother’s Day, current “SNL” cast-mates Sarah Sherman and Bowen Yang joined Rudolph onstage to honor her legacy and declare her a true “Moth-errr”.
“You’re a 30 Rock legend,” Sherman said. “You’ve had your foot on our necks since Y2K.”
Rudolph was disbelieving of this praise at first, but Yang quickly interjected to second Sherman’s claim.
“You were the first to slay the house down boots queen!” he exclaimed to Rudolph.
“You have achieved extra-terrestrial mother status!” said Sherman.
“Me? Mother?” questioned Rudolph. “You’re right.”

Maya Rudolph returned to Saturday Night Live as host for the Mother’s Day show.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” Rudolph said as she took the stage of Studio 8H. “It is so good to be back and for the Mother’s Day episode.”
Rudolph said that for her, it was “extra special” as she is a four-time mom, joking, “I have four beautiful kids… that I know of.”
Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman popped up to congratulate her on Mother’s Day.
“But Maya, you’re not just a mom, you’re mo-ther,” Yang noted.
Sherman added, “You’re a 30 Rock legend. You’ve had your foot on our neck since Y2K.”
Kenan Thompson, in character, then introduced Rudolph as the Mother of the House of Rockefeller.

Maya Rudolph is everyone’s mother now, and she knows it. So, during her monologue on “Saturday Night Live” this week, she happily claimed her crown — with a custom song that had everyone, including the cast, gagged.
After skipping a newsy cold open in favor of honoring the cast members’ mothers, Rudolph hit the stage and expressed her excitement at being the host for the Mother’s Day weekend episode, and her love of being a mother to four kids herself (that she knows of).
But she was quickly interrupted by Bowen Yang and Sarah Sherman, who informed Rudolph that she’s not just a mother, but she is Mother. Suddenly, Kenan Thompson took the stage in blinged out glasses and a wig to turn 30 Rock into “Club Maya.”
When the camera panned back to Rudolph, she was in a reflective jumpsuit and launched into a club remix called “I Am Mother.

Edward L. Scanlon was the ultimate insider.
The long-serving NBC executive was a hugely influential player in the life of the network during the decades when it was owned by RCA and later General Electric. Scanlon was involved in everything from corporate recruiting and personnel vetting to labor negotiations to high-level M&a activity during his 44 years with RCA, Hertz and NBC. He was a close confidant of Ge chairman Jack Welch. But Scanlon never courted the spotlight, preferring to stay behind the scenes. In 2001, as Scanlon prepared to retire from NBC, the New York Times published a rare profile that described him as “NBC’s Negotiator and Fixer.”
Here, veteran media consultant and corporate recruiter Stuart Sucherman pays tribute to his longtime friend and colleague. Scanlon died March 17 in Naples, Florida, one day before his 90th birthday.
The role that Ed played at NBC for 30 years is hard to define.

NBC is rolling out the red carpet to celebrate Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary.
Ahead of its upfront presentation next week to Madison Avenue ad buyers, the network on Friday announced that it has scheduled a three-hour primetime special to honor the anniversary. The special, which will also be live, is set to air Sunday, Feb. 16, from 8-11 p.m. Et.
That will cap what NBC says will be a “celebratory weekend” honoring the Lorne Michaels-created sketch show.
Additional details have not yet been announced as Michaels and company are in the home stretch of closing out SNL’s 49th season with alum Maya Rudolph set to host this weekend and Jake Gyllenhaal on deck for the May 18 season finale.
News that NBC would formally celebrate SNL’s 50th anniversary comes as no surprise as Michaels said last January that he was already planning for the February event.

It’s the end of the world, and Mulligan has turned the apocalypse into one big joke.
Created by 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alums Sam Means and Robert Carlock, the animated comedy series about Matty Mulligan — the everyman who becomes president after Earth is destroyed by aliens — is getting a Part 2. The upcoming 10 episodes include a party cruise ship full of new characters, lavish musical numbers, guest stars, and a newly invented meat substitute that takes on a (terrible) personality.
Means and Carlock are frequent collaborators of Tina Fey — who also happens to voice Dr. Farrah Braun, the last scientist on Earth — which means they’re experienced in packing half-hour episodes with jokes on jokes. “It’s the kind of show we’ve been writing for years — 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt, Great News,” says Means, “but with the palette and the scope that you can...

In Netflix’s new series Bodkin, hard-bitten newspaper reporter Dove (Siobhán Cullen) is forced to team up with veteran podcaster Gilbert (Will Forte) to investigate a 25-year-old mystery in the eponymous Irish town. The reluctant partners clash on everything, not least of which is that Dove thinks they can, and should, find out what really happened in Bodkin back in the day.
“Have you ever listened to a podcast where they actually solve it?” Gilbert asks, incredulous. “I need diversions. Red herrings. Human interest. The stuff that people actually care about.

A new mockumentary series set in the world of “The Office” is not only being developed — but was just picked up by Peacock. “The Office” creator Greg Daniels and “Nathan for You” co-creator Michael Koman’s untitled project has been ordered to series, produced by Utv.
The untitled Daniels/Koman project will star Irish film star Domhnall Gleeson and “The White Lotus” Season 2 breakout Sabrina Impacciatore, as well as an ensemble cast that has yet to be announced. According to a press release from Peacock, the documentary crew behind “The Office” (who stepped out from behind the camera in controversial later seasons) is back to work looking for a new subject, “when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” Like Dunder Mifflin’s struggle with selling paper in the digital age, the series’ synopsis suggests that it will tackle the...

“Girls5eva” deserves to be heard. Yes, the laugh-out-loud comedy, from the minds of Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, creator Meredith Scardino and others, is funny. The music industry is wickedly skewered. The music, led by Jeff Richmond, is clever and catchy.
But really, the heart of the show comes from its stars — Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell — and the characters they play. These are women of a certain age who are rediscovering their voices and finally taking on their dreams, after years of settling for something less.

With the appetite of a hungry grizzly, “The Bear” could gobble up a few Emmy records for its sophomore season. Fresh off a smashing first season that set a new benchmark for comedy series wins with 10 trophies, FX’s awards-gobbling show shows no signs of letting up. Its second season, which aired in June 2023, is eyeing three more records to own: most acting nominations for a series in a single year, most nods for a comedy, and most nominated episode in history with its sixth installment, “Fishes.”
“Fishes” dishes out a heated Christmas dinner flashback of the Berzatto family, positioning itself as the series’ pièce de résistance thus far — imagine the “Succession/Connor’s Wedding” version of family dinners, only with more food spills. Directed by Christopher Storer, who also co-wrote the episode with Joanna Calo, “Fishes” seems the obvious pick for Emmy nods in both directing and writing categories.

Tracy Morgan will star in a new Paramount+ comedy series that is set in the same world as the CBS show “The Neighborhood,” Variety has learned.
The half-hour multi-cam comedy is titled “Crutch.” Morgan stars in the series as Francois “Frank” Crutchfield, or Crutch to those who know him well. The character is described as “a Harlem widower whose empty-nest plans are put on hold after his millennial son and free-spirited daughter move back home.”
“The Neighborhood” star and executive producer Cedric the Entertainer will also executive produce “Crutch,” with CBS Studios producing. Production will begin later this year.

Given her one-of-a-kind awards resume and irrefutable status as an acting legend, it’s no wonder Meryl Streep is widely expected to be honored at this year’s Emmys for her work on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Taking the gold for her first regular comedy series role would be impressive enough, but the noteworthiness of her win would extend far beyond that. Having joined her show in its third season, she would be only the 10th non-original comedy series cast member to ever pull off a lead or supporting Emmy victory.
Not including sketch performers, Streep would be said winners club’s first new entrant in over three decades. The last was Kirstie Alley, who replaced Shelley Long as the female lead of “Cheers” at the start of season six and prevailed on her third Emmy bid in 1991. While the idea of comedy on television has been warped by the Emmys, some shows can deliver the joke factories that once littered the TV landscape. Three-camera sitcoms may be out of vogue, but Hacks takes the best bits of those shows and applies them to a single-camera setup. Hacks shines as the best of both worlds with withering jokes and incredible performances. It’s among the most poignant and topical shows of the moment while laying track that will allow it to hold up in the decades to come. It does not hurt that Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder are two of the funniest people on television.

After 12 seasons, Curb Your Enthusiasm has come to a close. Seinfeld co-creator Larry David played a curmudgeonly version of himself for 120 episodes of the semi-improvised cringe comedy, which was nominated for 47 Emmy Awards over the course of its run.
But all good things must come to an end, which Curb Your Enthusiasm did in April of 2024. Luckily, one of Cye’s stars has a perfect replacement series on Netflix.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit comedy as “Hacks” returns with its third season on May 2.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve circled back around to the 2024 Emmys comedy category — a genre we’ve paid little mind to so far because it seems obvious “The Bear” will sweep through the ceremony again. I love being a contrarian whenever possible — or, at least, speaking truth to power and groupthink — but even I’m not here to type about potential upsets, particularly with “The Bear” Season 3 set to debut in June, again, right when academy members are sitting down to vote. But in the interest of keeping things interesting — and because it’s probably now the best continuing show with “Succession” off the air (remember when we had it so good?...

It’s a Comedy Night Done Right reunion.
Steve Carell, star of “The Office,” will join previously announced Tina Fey, creator and star of “30 Rock,” in “The Four Seasons,” a Netflix comedy series based on the 1981 film of the same name. The streaming service announced Carell’s casting on Wednesday.
Fey and Carell previously starred in the 2010 comedy “Date Night,” in which they played a married couple. Their characters in “The Four Seasons” have not yet been announced.
The film follows three couples who go on quarterly vacations together, where the stresses and joys of marriage get magnified, especially after one of the men leaves his wife for a younger woman and begins bringing her on the trips. The film’s point-of-view couple is played by Alan Alda (who also wrote and directed) and Carol Burnett. The film was previously adapted into a short-lived sitcom in 1984.

It’s a Date Night reunion for Steve Carell and Tina Fey in a new adaptation of the 1981 rom-com The Four Seasons. The former co-stars are set to lead the upcoming series, which will see Fey teaming up with longtime collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield to write the comedy.
The film — which was written and directed by Alan Alda and stars Alda, Carol Burnett, and Rita Moreno — follows three couples who vacation together every season but whose worlds are upended when one of them divorces.
Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the series, which is produced by Universal Television and will begin filming later in 2024.

Steve Carell is reuniting with Tina Fey and Universal Television.
The Office grad has closed a deal to co-star in Netflix’s The Four Seasons, the update of the 1981 Alan Alda feature film of the same name. The role reunites Carell with Tina Fey after the duo starred as a married couple in the 2010 movie Date Night.
Ordered straight-to-series in January after Netflix won the show following a bidding war after the conclusion of last year’s dual strikes, the adaptation was co-created by Fey and her fellow 30 Rock alums Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield.
Production on the series is slated to begin later this year. The original film, written and directed by Alda, revolves around three couples who take vacations together each season and explores the changes in the group dynamic when one of couples splits up and the man brings a much younger woman on subsequent trips. Padma Lakshmi’s post-Top Chef career may veer further into comedy, as the popular former host of the hit reality competition show shops around a comedy series script and continues to host her stand-up comedy night in Brooklyn.
In a wide-ranging and revealing New Yorker profile, out on Tuesday, Lakshmi tells writer Helen Rosner that the series was developed with Bridesmaids and Spy director Paul Feig, adding that it is a “hard comedy,” but declining to share its title or more about the show’s pitch. Lakshmi plans to produce and star in the series, she told the magazine.
Lakshmi has managed to become a household name, or at least an icon of the sensual potential of food, over her two decades as host of Bravo’s Top Chef. She exited the reality competition series in 2023 after 19 seasons, she said, “after much soul searching.” Kristen Kish filled her shoes...

Back in 2008, a music video landed on YouTube — then still largely in its infancy and mostly dominated by amateur video footage — and caused a bit of a stir, amassing a cult following and 1 million views. More than 15 years on, the video has morphed — extremely slowly — into a full-length feature film.
Chris Dane Owens’ upbeat love song “Shine on Me” was already a catchy slice of rock with some heavy ’80s inspirations. But it was the epic accompanying video — which he made for $70,000, no small sum in today’s music video world — that proved to be the real hit, largely for squeezing into its four minutes practically every clichéd trope and inspiration from popular swords-and-sorcery fantasy entertainment. “The Princess Bride” features prominently, but then there are elements of “Xena,” “The Lord of the Rings,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Dungeons and Dragons” and many, many more.

In 2018, Michelle and Barack Obama's production company Higher Ground signed a multi-year deal with Netflix, the biggest streaming service in the world. The Obamas were set to produce a number of high-profile projects, both scripted and unscripted.
Their first scripted project will premiere on May 9th, and it's not what you might have expected from the former President and First Lady. Bodkin is a dark comedy/mystery/thriller set in a small Irish town, starring comedy legend Will Forte.
What's It About?
True crime podcasters Gilbert (Forte), Dove (Siobhán Cullen), and Emmy (Robyn Cara) are desperately hoping to find a story juicy enough to make their podcast stand out in a crowded market. They decide to head to Ireland, where three strangers once disappeared from the (fictional) small coastal town of Bodkin.
The podcasters come to Bodkin on the festival of Samhain (which one character flippantly describes as 'the Irish Day of the Dead'.

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which will not air in time to qualify for consideration.

Other EPs are Steve Stark (Toluca Pictures), Andrew Mittman (1.21 Entertainment), Kevin Miserocchi (Tee and Charles Addams Foundation), Kayla Alpert, Jonathan Glickman (Glickmania), Gail Berman, Tommy Harper, and Kevin Lafferty.
The Addams Family spinoff is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ (Ortega) years as a student at Nevermore Academy. Federal regulators won’t stand in the way of any deals Wbd wants to make now, but its financial position may make big deals hard to find.
There’s still time to send Warner Bros. Discovery an anniversary card, though at this point it will arrive a little late. As of Monday, April 8, it’s been two years since the merger of Warner Media and Discovery in 2022. In the two years since the merger, things look a lot different for Wbd from a streaming perspective; HBO Max and discovery+ content is now available on the combined Max platform, which also carries live sports and news from the company’s cable channels. The two-year mark also means that legally, Wbd is now allowed to seek new merger and acquisition deals, and The Streamable will break down the best targets for the company to pursue now that it can officially use its credit card again.

A few years ago, after a few rough battles with the press and paparazzi and the cancellation of his MSNBC talk show, Alec Baldwin penned a much-publicized article announcing he’d be leaving “public life.” He reconsidered that departure and then appeared in the popular 2018 films “BlacKkKlansman,” “Mission Impossible: Fallout” and “A Star Is Born,” as well as the 2019 release “Motherless Brooklyn.” On the small screen, he appeared in the limited series “The Looming Tower,” recreated his recurring role on the reboot of “Will and Grace” and hosted “Match Game.”
Most notably Baldwin continued his appearances on “Saturday Night Live” lampooning Donald Trump. He made so many appearances in 2017 that he won an Emmy as Best Comedy Supporting Actor, his third career prize after his two leading wins for “30 Rock.”

What happens when you plan an extravagant worldwide tour… and nobody shows up?
That, unfortunately, seems to be the case for Girls5eva, the sharp and sassy music-industry comedy that moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season this month. The show — staring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell as the members of a forgotten Y2K-era girl group attempting a middle-age comeback — was never properly appreciated during its two Peacock seasons, and it felt like a lifeline when it got picked up by Netflix for Season 3, since the streaming giant routinely turns its acquired shows into monster hits.

Listen up fives — and by that I mean fours. “Girls5eva” is now streaming on Netflix and you’ve run out of excuses. This heightened, hilarious series from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writer Meredith Scardino is exactly the kind of bingeable romp that Netflix users allegedly crave, so why aren’t you watching, rewatching, and recommending?

These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to either Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) or Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”). The other potential nominees at this early stage are David Oyelowo (“Lawmen: Bass Reeves”), Hiroyuki Sanada (“Shogun”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”) and Andrew Scott (“Ripley”) — but that could all change in the coming months.
As of this writing, two our of six Emmy Experts predict a victory for Hamm: Peter Travers (ABC) and Ray Richmond (Gold Derby). The sitcom “Girls5eva” follows the attempted comeback of a fictional girl group that peaked in the early 2000s, now reunited as middle-aged women. But headed into its third season, it’s “Girls5eva,” not just Girls5eva, that’s trying to start anew. After two critically acclaimed, if evidently little-watched, seasons on Peacock, the show has been resurrected by Netflix, which has bankrolled a fresh batch of episodes and made the entire back catalog available to its massive audience of over 260 million global subscribers — many of whom will encounter “Girls5eva” for the first time as a Netflix original.
Once upon a time, Netflix made a name for itself as a place where cult favorites could find the fan base they deserved, making its rescue of a previously canceled project a retro throwback in itself. “Arrested Development” got a second life as a poster child for the possibilities of TV’s new normal...

There’s a very specific brand of broad silliness that Tina Fey and Robert Carlock have championed across comedies like 30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Mr. Mayor. Their shows exist in a fluid reality where it feels like anything is possible.
Meredith Scardino worked on the latter of these two series and her original creation, Girls5Eva, is very much cut from the same absurdist cloth. The music industry lampoon received plenty of attention when it first premiered on Peacock, only to fade away like a forgotten pop music group. It’s exciting that Netflix has rescued the effort, which is just as hilarious as ever, yet Girls5Eva still feels destined to resonate with a niche crowd instead of becoming the streaming service’s next big hit. This comedy can hit the right notes, but it’s not going to pack a stadium full of fans.

Finn Wolfhard’s second collaboration with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, hits theaters in less than ten days, but the young actor has already reunited with the writing duo for a third time on the set of their highly anticipated drama, SNL 1975. If that wasn’t enough, the Canadian performer is also hard at work on Stranger Things 5, the final season of Netflix’s most beloved series to date.
After the tragic death of Ghostbusters co-creator Ivan Reitman in February 2022, Jason Reitman eventually relinquished Frozen Empire’s directorial duties to his writing partner on these two most recent Ghostbusters films, Kenan. After all, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a personal experience for the filmmaker, as Ivan was by his side for most of its production as well as its release. The 2021 sequel to Ghostbusters II (1989), which is about the family of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) coming to...

Back in May 2021, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles returned to the Hollywood Bowl to promote a new album. At one point, she invited her “Girls5eva” co-stars — Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps — to join her onstage. The quartet performed the song “4 Stars” from the comedy, marking the first and only time they’ve sung together in public.
But here’s the rub: This was the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, and all 17,500 seats around the Hollywood Bowl were empty. Bareilles’ concert was being livestreamed, and the cast had no idea what the fans at home felt about their performance.
Which sounds a lot like the fate of “Girls5eva” itself. The comedy was one of the first original series on Peacock, but on a nascent streamer, the audiences weren’t huge. Critics and a small cadre of fans embraced the Tina Fey-produced comedy, but it never caught on with a broader viewership.

In a perfect world, Leap Day would entail some celebrations. Not to worry, though. This 30 Rock episode, starring an iconic Jim Carrey and Andie MacDowell cameo, has your back. Gear up for blue and yellow-themed festivities and, of course, a fictional movie that can give even Groundhog Day a run for its money! Be careful about getting your eyes poked, though.
The titular ninth episode of the sixth season of the Tina Fey-starring satirical sitcom series honors this fake holiday, concocting a blend of tropes seen in most films centered around such celebratory occasions.
Jim Carrey is a fictional character, Dave Williams, in the 30 Rock universe!
Leap Day is portrayed in the show’s mythology as an occurrence that calls for parties and celebrations. And like all great holidays, this one, too, puts the emphasis on a cultural mascot. Here, that is a gilled entity who sports...
