Michael J. Fox decided to leave the sitcom due to his Parkinson's disease which had worsened and the writers decided to write out Michael J. Fox's character Mike, by having Mike force to resign, by taking the fall for an unknown connection between the Mayor and the mob and giving him a emotional farewell. Instead of ending the sitcom, Michael J. Fox was replaced by Charlie Sheen as Charlie Crawford for the final two seasons and Michael J. Fox made 3 guest roles in the sixth season which saw him getting married.
This was the 100th episode of "Spin City" and the final appearance of 'Michael J. Fox' as a regular cast member. He returned as a guest star in three more episodes.
