This article contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.
Think back to the early 2000s. Star Trek‘s vision of an optimistic future no longer kept pace with the post-9/11 world. Instead, Trek writer Ronald D. Moore left the franchise to work with David Eick on reviving a cheesy sci-fi show from the 1970s best remembered for its weird cyborg dog and cool-looking evil robots.
And yet, somehow, Moore and Eick made Battlestar Galactica into a hit, an ambitious mix of deep lore, compelling character building, and religious yearning. Not even the controversial final season, which took leaps that rivaled the ending of Lost, could diminish the series popularity.
So why in the world did the Battlestar Galactica spinoffs flop so hard? For Eick, the answer is simple: Poor planning and lack of vision.
“Ron’s involvement vacillated so there was less consistency and less reliability and, as we shored up his absence,...

For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.
You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.
Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

Battlestar Galactica has a compelling premise. Twelve human space colonies in a distant part of the universe are at war with a race of artificially intelligent robots called the Cylons. A human called Baltar betrays humanity and the Cylons wipe out the Twelve Colonies and most of their space-faring ships, the Colonial Fleet, in a nuclear attack that leaves their planets uninhabitable. The only surviving vessel from the Fleet is the Battlestar Galactica, along with a ragtag collection of other space vessels. So the human survivors travel across the universe led by Commander Adama of the Galactica, looking for the legendary 13th colony, Earth, to make it their new home.
With such a fascinating setup, it’s no surprise that Battlestar Galactica (1978) has had several sequels, spinoffs, and remakes: the short-lived sequel series Galactica 1980, which was hampered by a lack of most of the original stars; the very successful 2003-...

Exclusive: There is a new writer at the helm of Peacock’s long-gestating reboot of the popular sci-fi franchise Battlestar Galactica. The Sinner creator Derek Simonds has come on board as writer, executive producer and showrunner.
Battlestar Galactica, which remains in development at Peacock, has been a passion project for Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail — a big fan of the original — whose company Esmail Corp. is producing the reboot through UCP where the company is based.
First announced as being in development at NBCUniversal’s streamer Peacock in 2019, the Battlestar Galactica reimagening previously had Michael Lesslie attached to write and executive produce.
A new take on the classic IP, the latest incarnation is executive produced by Simonds as well as Esmail Corp’s Sam Esmail and Chad Hamilton. UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
“We are working on it,” Esmail told Deadline in October about the Battlestar Galactica series reboot.

The premise of Glen A. Larson's 1978 sci-fi series "Battlestar Galactica" was high-concept and complex. It took place far from Earth, at the end of humanity's millennium-long war with a species of robots called the Cylons. The Cylons themselves were built by a long-extinct race of humanoid reptiles, and they seem poised to offer the same fate to humankind. Feeling that the writing was on the wall, a human named Count Baltar (John Colicos) betrayed humanity and sided with the Cylons, putting the robots hot on the trail of the Battlestar Galactica, a massive starship carrying most of the galaxy's last-known humans. Their goal is to find a long-lost "thirteenth tribe," a human colony that was said to have settled on a distant planet called Earth.

Buffy and Spike, together again! Sarah Michelle Gellar reunited with former Buffy the Vampire Slayercostar James Marsters at the Los Angeles premiere of her new TV show, Wolf Pack. As the series hits its stride, the primary difference emerging is the presence of a long-arc antagonist, Janis Cavalicci, working at odds with the Ql team. This contrasts with Sam and Al's situation in the original series, where they had only a simple (!) task with no adversaries to speak of.
On Quantum Leap Season 1 Episode 3, Janis not only steals and sets up tech that could interfere directly with the Ql project and Ben's ability to return home, but she also drugs her own mother to get at it after confronting Beth with her lack of faith in Janis's abilities. Are we witnessing a villain origin moment?
Meanwhile, Ben's painful learning curve is both physical and emotional for himself and Addison as memories start to emerge.
It's fascinating to note how many bodies hit the ground in the scope of this adventure.

It’s been 13 years since the Galactica reached Earth. We watched in the 2009 finale “Daybreak” as Admiral Adama, President Roslin, Apollo, Starbuck, Gaius Baltar, and Caprica Six walked towards a bright and unwritten future in their new home. It was a cathartic (but predictably divisive) ending to a six-year TV journey that remains one of the best and most influential in science fiction history. There’s no question that Battlestar Galactica paved the way for other serious, gritty political sci-fi dramas like The Expanse and the recently released Foundation adaptation.
But Battlestar Galactica‘s legacy is one thing. What about its future? That’s a question NBCUniversal has struggled to answer in the years since our heroes first touched down on our planet. There were multiple attempts at spin-offs directly after the flagship series finale on the Syfy channel, including two prequels — Caprica, which told the story of Bill Adama...

The line, "So say we all" is a classic part of the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" series. The show, which was based on the 1978 television series, aired on Syfy (then the Sci-Fi Channel) beginning with the two-part miniseries in 2003, followed by four seasons starting in 2004. It spawned the under-appreciated prequel series "Caprica" in 2010, and a spinoff called "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome" which was first released as a web series in 2012, then as a television movie on the channel in 2013.

Simon Kinberg has signed on to write Universal Pictures’ big-screen reboot of “Battlestar Galactica,” according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
Kinberg will also produce alongside Dylan Clark who has shepherded the film adaptation for the studio.
“‘Battlestar Galactica’ is one of the holy grails in science fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited about bringing something new to the franchise, while honoring what’s made it so iconic and enduring,” Kinberg said in a statement. “I’m so grateful that Dylan and my partners at Universal have trusted me with this incredible universe.”

The Pate twins, Josh and Jonas, have spent the last two decades toiling away behind the scenes of the small screen, producing TV series that haven’t quite managed to capture the world’s attention enough to become heavy hitters. Aquarius, Believe, Blood & Oil, Surface and even Caprica were all perfectly fine, but they don’t tend to be talked about amongst the standout shows of the 00s and 10s. Now, together with Syriana consultant Shannon Burke, the twins are bringing a new teen treasure-hunting drama series to Netflix.

Battlestar Galactica had one of the most successful reboots ever. With a new show on the way, we examine what made it so special...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Warning: contains spoilers for Battlestar Galactica.
Battlestar Galactica sits alongside Stargate, Star Trek, and Doctor Who as one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of the late 20th and early 21st century, sporting an original 1978 series, a 1980 follow-up, a complete reboot starting with a mini-series in 2003 and running for four seasons, and two spin-off series, prequels Caprica and Blood and Chrome.
With the news that a new spin-off in the universe of Ron D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica is planned, this seems a good time to look at just a few of the things that made it so special.
The Cylons
Perhaps the single biggest change between the 1978 series and the 2003 "re-imagining" is the nature of the Cylons.

Battlestar Galactica is getting a new series from Mr. Robot's Sam Esmail for NBCU's new Peacock streaming service!
Our favorite space-faring warship is being put back in commission by NBCUniversal, which has set a new Battlestar Galactica series for its upcoming Peacock streaming service. According to Deadline, the new series comes from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail.
We don't know anything about the series itself except that it won't be a remake, according to Esmail, who confirmed as much on Twitter: "BSG fans, this will Not be a remake of the amazing series [Ron Moore] launched because... why mess with perfection? Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!"
Esmail didn't go into further detail about what that "new story within the mythology" might be, but we hope it at least features Starbuck.

The new NBCUniversal streaming service that the company said Tuesday would be called Peacock will launch in April 2020 with original content that includes series reboots from the NBCU library among its fare. NBCUniversal has unveiled a broad range of programming for the first slate of originals for its streaming service, which has officially been dubbed Peacock.
Perhaps the biggest titled announced for the service is a reboot of the classic sci-fi series “Battlestar Galactica,” with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail executive producing. This is the third version of the series to make it to television. The original aired for one season in 1978 on ABC, which was followed by a short-lived continuation called “Galactica 1980.” Sci Fi Channel (now Syfy) then rebooted the series back in 2003 with a three-hour miniseries whose cast included Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell among others. The success of that project led Syfy and Sky Television to commission a new series with the cast of the miniseries returning. That show ran for four seasons and also spawned two TV movies, wrapping up in 2009. A prequel series, “Caprica,” aired...

“Battlestar Galactica” is getting another reboot, this time at NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming service.
The company unveiled its streaming plans on Tuesday, with one of several major announcements being another reboot of the space opera from UCP and “Homecoming” and “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail.

The “Battlestar Galactica” franchise originated in 1978 with the short-lived original series created by Glen A. Larson. It centered on a crew of survivors traveling space on a ship, Galactica, in the aftermath of humanity’s near-extinction in a war with a race of robots called Cylons.
The company unveiled its streaming plans on Tuesday, with one of several major announcements being another reboot of the space opera from UCP and “Homecoming” and “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail.

It was a clever choice by Syfy to take Krypton back Two generations from our Man of Steel's time.
It gave them the elbow-room necessary to explore some truly unique aspects of the society and introduce characters known in the DC-verse but not previously fleshed-out in canon.
Although initially there was a strong resemblance to Syfy's Other prequel series, Caprica, which chronicled Another doomed planet peopled with factions and families and feuds, Krypton soon developed a voice of its own.
In the span of ten episodes, we became acquainted with a deeply intricate political/religious system, a complex love story, and a truly galactic imminent danger.

The Titans just made a killer cast addition: Esai Morales will portray Deathstroke, the fan-favorite assassin and archenemy of Teen Titans leader Dick Grayson.
The Titans, the first original programming franchise for the DC Universe subscription steaming site, launched in September and finished its first season in December. The weekly show follows the superhero squad that’s led by Batman’s former sidekick, Robin, aka Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), and includes the hot-tempered alien princess Starfire (Anna Diop), the mysterious empath Raven (Teagan Croft), and the green-skinned shape-shifter Beast Boy (Ryan Potter).
That Titans line-up of characters was introduced with much fanfare in the pages of DC Comics back in 1980. The team, created by Marv Wolfman and George Perez, didn’t have to wait long to find their signature antagonist: Deathstroke the Terminator was introduced in issue No. 2 of The New Teen Titans in December 1980.

When a TV show moves away from its core concept, it can either relight the spark or snuff it out completely...
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
The last thing any showrunner of a long-running TV series wants is for their show to turn stale. Episode after episode after episode for years and years of nothing but the same thing will soon have audiences turning off. So surely the answer is to keep the show fresh, right? Mix things up a bit, change things around a bit, maybe even reboot the show and send it in a new direction? That’ll keep audiences happy!
Well, maybe. Rebooting or reinventing a show is a delicate thing, and there’s always a risk that audiences will simply long for the glory days when the show felt like the series they fell in love with. Shows that move...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What does it take to make a good prequel TV series? (And feel free to include an example of a show that got it right or wrong.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
A prequel TV series is the most successful when it uses familiar touchstones but creates its own world. “Hannibal” is probably the best example of this, where there were characters we recognized but the setting, experience, and modern time period were completely Bryan Fuller’s (wonderfully so). “Bates Motel” has been another positive example, especially as it nears its end. The time period is again modernized, but it keeps a surreal and retro feel. And...

Are you wondering what's going to be happening on your favorite college campus this fall?
Well, so are we.
And we have a wee bit of news to share that might help as you wait.
Esai Morales and Amy Madigan have landed guest starring roles on How to Get Away with Murder Season 3.
And we have absolutely no details about who they will be playing or what they will be doing.
So if you thought ABC and Shonda Rhimes was going to start changing things when it came to Htgawm, well then you were just wrong.
Madigan is a Shondaland multi-player, however.
She previously did a multi-season arc as Meredith's psychiatrist on Grey's Anatomy.
I have a feeling many of you will be familiar with her from that role. So wouldn't it be fun to see her go polar opposite and be rotten to the core on Htgawm?

All this has happened before, and all this will happen again. The Tracking Board reports Michael De Luca will join Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark to produce Universal's Battlestar Galactica feature film. Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica was cancelled by Syfy after one season. ABC cancelled the 1970s original Battlestar Galactica series that spawned it all, also after one season.
Reportedly, Universal has been looking to make a Battlestar Galactica film since the late 1990s, but hit pause, when Syfy's 2003 mini-series and 2005 Battlestar Galactica TV series went forward. Movie talk bubbled up again in 2009. According to The Tracking Board, the feature version is expected to be more in line with the late Glen Larson's original 1978 series. In 2014, prior to his passing, Variety reported Larson would be involved with the film.

Since its debut in 1978, Battlestar Galactica has never really been absent from popular culture. That first series may have only run for one season, but it has been rebooted, re-imagined and re-worked more times than anyone over the age of 35 would probably care to remember. Despite more failures to launch than successful orbits, Universal has assembled a team of powerhouse producers to make a Battlestar Galactica movie franchise a reality.
Michael De Luca (Captain Phillips, Moneyball, The Social Network, and the Fifty Shades franchise), Scott Stuber (The Break-Up, The Kingdom, Ted) and Dylan Clark (The Heat, the Planet Of The Apes franchise) are combining their considerable forces to begin piecing together what the studio hopes will become a movie series of the tent-pole variety. While that sounds, perhaps, ill-advised, it is certainly the case that the Battlestar Galactica brand has enormous potential for development.
