Screen Gems has put out a whole lot of horror movies over the years, with titles including The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Don’t Breathe, Resident Evil, Underworld, Deliver Us from Evil, The Grudge, Carrie, The Stepfather, Prom Night, The Pope’s Exorcist, Insidious: The Red Door, and the recently released Tarot – and they’re making moves to ensure they’re going to be seen as a source for interesting horror in the years ahead. They’re working with Platinum Dunes on the “District 9 by way of The Purge“ werewolf movie Wolf Night and recently signed a first-look deal with Gary Dauberman that will see him “creating projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.” Now Deadline reports that Scott Derrickson, the director of such films as Sinister, Doctor Strange, The Black Phone, and the previously mentioned The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us from Evil,...

You know that when prolific director Doug Campbell is involved in a thriller, it’s going to be a ridiculously good time. So although The Manny, written by screenwriters Tamar Halpern and Scotty Mullen, isn’t on the same level as this year’s She’s Obsessed with My Husband, it’s still got plenty to recommend.
Lani McCall (Joanne Jansen) is a food vlogger on the rise. She’s on the cusp of signing a major network contract, thanks to love interest Zack (Brendan Morgan), but her recent divorce from unreliable husband Darren (Jamaal Grant) has left her in a precarious child care situation.
Lani tends to rely on assistant/producer Mercedes (Hailey Summer), but it’s not a sustainable situation. What she really needs is a nanny for her son, Jaylen (Ashton Ayres); ideally as soon as possible.
Enter Morgan (Michael Evans Behling), a hunky 23 year old who cooks,...

When it comes to the 1980s, there is no shortage of serviceable horror flicks to max out your nostalgia meter and remind us all why that particular decade reigns supreme for us horror hounds. While the 70s may have perfected the slasher with John Carpenter’s Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre– The 80s delivered on bringing to life some of the greatest creations in the genre. A dream stalking killer with knives for fingers, a summer camp slaughter committed by a giant in a hockey mask, a sadistic demon who loves pain as much as pleasure, and who could forget the slew of iconic and cult status slashers that have spawned franchises still trucking along today. I’m looking at you Leprechaun. But today, my friends, we’re going to be discussing a different kind of horror movie. A movie that breaks the mold from the prototypical horror outing.

The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. Speaking of that movie, its inspiration and reason for its existence was the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical that premiered in October of 1986 and has had runs all the way through as recently as 2021. 1989 was the beginning of its U.S. tour and we got not one but Two Phantom movies that year. Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge is cheesy and may just be more well known due to our friend Joe Bob featuring it on the Last Drive In recently. Here in the JoBlo Horror kitchen today...

Earlier this month, it was announced that Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, are teaming up with director Jonathan Liebesman – who they previously worked with on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – to make a werewolf movie called Wolf Night. Now Deadline reports that Wolf Night has found a home at Sony’s Screen Gems.
Michael Bitar is overseeing the project for Screen Gems, while Alex Ginno does the same for Platinum Dunes.

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.
Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

There is nothing like a proverbial bond between one’s own offspring. The joys are finding your inner self within them. The feeling of self-fulfillment, reproducing your very own mini-me. The realization that you have much more purpose in this world than just being a cog in corporate America riding that 9-5 grind. Ah yes, the moments you share with your own child far outweigh the trials and tribulations of dealing with the everyday stress of adulthood. But what if that child has an embedded evil inside of them? What if their own volition comes with malice and harm? Would you cope with still accepting them as they were? Would you sleep with one eye open,...

You is a Netflix series created by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble starring Penn Badgley.
This fourth season of You is showing itself to be a completely scathing, sarcastic and lethal portrait of the (high) London society in this highly entertaining plot about a stalker… and it is highly seductive.
A very different series that has managed, with intelligence and a great sense of literary irony, to give a new twist to the topic and a new slant about the established. It knows how to turn around what, supposedly, has upended the social game.
A twisted literary, cinematographic and televisual game that becomes more and more addictive as it evolves.
Don’t miss it

Stage names aren’t uncommon in the entertainment industry. Some of the most successful actors have created names for themselves that seem to reek of star power. Meryl Streep, for example, was born Mary Louise Streep but has used her nickname throughout her professional career. However, other actors like Penn Badgley have a government name that seemed to imply that they were destined for stardom from the very beginning.

There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

With copies of Fear Street flying off shelves, it only made sense for other publishers to put out their own young-adult horror series in the 1990s. And Berkley Books’ venture was Terror Academy, a fifteen-volume collection of high-school horror and thrills. C. A. Stokes, writing under the pen name of Nicholas Pine, kicked things off with the 1993 entry Light Outs. The Berkley artwork shows a teen girl walking down the halls of the titular institution, oblivious to the knife-wielding stranger closing in on her. However, the actual story and cover art don’t exactly match up.
Lights Out starts out cheery and unaware, much like its protagonist. Mandy Roberts is about to be a senior at Port City’s Central Academy, the main setting of these books, and her biggest worry now is telling her father she wants to step down as the school newspaper’s editor. James Gunn on Wednesday shut down comic Scott Adams’ shocking tweet that urged parents with violent teenagers to “watch people die” or “kill your son” by pointing out he was a violent teen addict who managed to turn his life around.
“Hey Scott Adams: As someone who was himself a violent teenager addicted to drugs & entered recovery with the help & love of his family, as well as someone who has seen dozens of other young men stay sober & become fruitful members of society, these are not the only two options,” Gunn tweeted.
Adams’ original tweet was in response to the arrest of Highland Park shooter Robert Crimo III, who killed seven people and injured more than three dozen on July 4.
“The Highland shooting and every Fentanyl overdose death among the young are teaching us the same lesson, and we refuse to learn it, the “Dilbert” comic artist tweeted on July 6. “It’s difficult,...

Happy Saturday, dear readers! I hope that you’ve been enjoying all of our Indie Horror Month coverage so far, and that you’ll continue to join in on the celebration right here on Daily Dead for the rest of April as well. Yesterday, I paid tribute to the wave of independent horror that was released throughout the 1980s (you can read that piece Here) so I thought it only made sense to focus on a most excellent streaming resource where you can find a ton of great indie genre movies from that decade and watch them for free - Tubi TV.
While Tubi’s collection of ‘80s horror is vast, I went ahead and picked out 25 great genre classics that are currently available on their platform to stream, but please know that by no means is this everything from the 1980s that Tubi has to offer, so be sure...

Ad Nauseam: Newsprint Nightmares from the ’70s and ’80s
1984 Publishing, October 5, 2021
Michael Gingold (Author), Joe Dante (Foreword)
Ballyhoo, the art of selling the public something they don’t want, has never changed—but like the devil it has assumed many disguises. In the 19th century small towns were inundated with colorful broadsides, barn-sized murals promoting the arrival of the circus or a traveling vaudeville show. The 20th century made do with the daily newspaper’s theater section—all in black and white but jam-packed with exciting possibilities. Today we have Twitter and your neighbor’s cousin’s friend on Facebook. That’s not exactly progress.
The movie advertisements of a not-too-distant yesterday were called ad mats. They permeated the entertainment sections of the dailies, crammed together side by side like post-war housing developments. They were in close competition for our undivided attention so the artwork was designed to attract—and shock—the most jaundiced soul.

Shudder is pulling out all the shivery stops to commemorate the startling fact that we are exactly halfway to the most beloved date on any horror fan’s calendar, Halloween. Yes, that’s right, this month (April) is the six-month mark and the world’s scariest streaming outlet is celebrating with “Halfway to Halloween,” a massive slate of programming that begins on April 1 and continues throughout the rest of the month.
This is no April Fool’s joke (although we have some if you want). Shudder is rolling out a brand new batch of exclusive and/or original programming, including the second season of its acclaimed Creepshow series, the premiere of a new series of original short films called Deadhouse Dark, the highly anticipated sequel to its In Search of Darkness documentary, the return of The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, and the 2021 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

A throwback to all the B-grade knockoffs that followed such hit late ’80s/early ’90s household thrillers as “The Stepfather,” “Pacific Heights,” and “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” “Paradise Cove” will be nobody’s idea of an original movie, let alone a good one. Still, it provides a degree of schlock entertainment value, as a young couple discover their Malibu fixer-upper comes with a crazy homeless woman squatting on the premises, itching to turn homicidal … again. Low on suspense and plausibility but high on tasteless and absurd ideas, Martin Guigui’s film does offer undiscriminating viewers some fun, albeit more of a laughing-at than laughing-with variety.

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. To this end, HBO Max have added 122 films today,...

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.
To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

Tagline: "The True Story of John List. The Quieter the Street...the Darker the Secret." A Killer Next Door is a thriller, from director Andrew Jones (Cabin 28). The film is inspired by the events surrounding family killer John List, similar to 1987's The Stepfather. In this film, earlier events have been hyperbolized to create a mysterious situation. In a small town, Stephanie (Harriet Rees) is recovering from a broken leg, when she suspects one of her neighbours (William Meredith) as being a famous murderer. Once confronted, the neighbour turns against his accuser, while trying to remain undiscovered by authorities. A North Bank Entertainment production, 4Digital Media will release this title in late July. The film's U.S. release poster is hosted here. The American poster shows both central characters. List looks concerned about being spied on. Meanwhile, Stephanie looks front and center, with both villain and hero looking at the viewer.

“Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween” is one of those sequels where the first movie gets retold in a new way, but bigger and crazier than before. Except for the “bigger and crazier” part.
That first “Goosebumps” movie still feels like an instant cult classic, with earnest characters and an imaginative storyline that never skimps on the scares. “Goosebumps 2” plays like a somewhat ambitious straight-to-video retread. The script is more contrived than ever, the characters are largely underwritten, and the monsters look cheap and get very little to do.
That’s not to say that “Goosebumps 2” is entirely without its charms. As directed by Ari Sendal (“The Duff”), the film keeps its low-key, harmless energy at a steady simmer. Every once in a while a joke is funnier than you might expect, or a monster looks surprisingly spooky, but overall this is a safe, by the numbers Halloween family film. Imagine “Hocus Pocus,...

There exists a subgenre that runs through both horror and thriller stories that taps into a fear of unknown dangers being brought into the safety of one’s own private world. It focuses on strangers; not the ones who lurk in dark alleyways and are easily forgotten once you reach the safety of your brightly lit house or apartment. No, these are the strangers that you bring home with you, the ones you invite into your life. They masquerade as one person—seemingly trustworthy, rational, and friendly—but are, in actuality, someone completely different, often with a horrifying agenda. [Spoiler warning for those who haven’t seen Orphan.]We have seen this in films such as The Stepfather, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and The Guest (among others), in which a friendly stranger is invited into a family and begins to tear it apart from the inside out. In Jaume Collet-Serra's Orphan, we see an interesting spin on the “Invited Stranger” subgenre,...

Without question, being a stepparent can be rough. It’s a balancing act between wanting what’s best for the child, and the need to ingratiate oneself and hopefully, earn and obtain love. This is a tightrope that Jerry Blake (Terry O’Quinn) has no interest in walking – if he can’t implement his perfect family plan, he switches policies in the most violent way possible. Welcome to the world of The Stepfather (1987), a pretty good thriller elevated to classic status due to a legendary performance by O’Quinn.
And while Jerry Blake has little patience for deviation from his ideals, so too do Henry Morrison and Bill Hodgkins – all identities that our stepdad creates in his twisted pursuit of perfection. (If at first you don’t succeed, kill and kill again.) The Stepfather proves that home is where the hurt is.

The Stepfather
Directed by Joseph Ruben
Written by Donald E. Westlake
USA / 1987
I would like to tell you about a monster, our final monster in our month of great monsters of the screen. The monster is the modern, American family.
So perfect is that wholesome, Norman Rockwell family that if it doesn’t work right, Terry O’Quinn will kill for it. Literally.
The Stepfather has grown into a cult classic, and it is well deserved of such a status. It opens with O’Quinn standing naked in a bathroom, shaving. Then he gets dressed, takes his bags, and walks out the door near the bodies of the family he just murdered. See, the catch with marrying gold ol’ Terry is that if even for a moment he doesn’t have a Rockwellian life, he’ll kill all of you.

To preface this article, I’d like to openly acknowledge the fact that there isn’t a single “great” film on this list. Furthermore, given the concept of this piece, it’s safe to say that you’re not going to read about any significantly original films either.
The whole remake thing kind of blew those hopes out of the water. That said, we’re going to eye 10 remakes/reboots/reimaginings that were forced through the meat grinder upon arrival, despite the fact that they didn’t entirely deserve such brutish treatment.
Believe it or not, there are a few remakes out there worth watching. The horror world would have you believe that not a single film on this list qualifies, but I’m here – battling valiantly – to prove the voices of many wrong. Dig in for a closer look at some remakes that, while not monumental, still offer some redeeming qualities.

Killing Kennedy is liable to become a massive hit for the National Geographic Channel, and Once Upon a Time‘s Ginnifer Goodwin isn’t going to hurt things at all. As production gets underway, a couple of first looks have hit, and they’re pretty impressive. The two images are almost creepy, especially if we put them through some filters. Look for doctored versions to start making the rounds as the marketing heats up. Well, that’s what I’d do.
Are you looking forward to this one?

Spotted: A floppy-haired actor biting the glamorous hand that fed him.
Penn Badgley always seemed like the most intellectual member of Gossip Girl’s cast — perhaps because of his preternaturally deep voice, or the way he held up a “Bring Back the Glass-Steagall Act” sign at Occupy Wall Street in the fall of 2011, or because his chief competitors for that title are people like Chase Crawford and Taylor Momsen. And given this, it’s not totally surprising that Badgley secretly felt like a show that hinged on faked deaths and dowries — dowries! In the year 2012! — was sort of beneath him.

This article is dedicated to Andrew Copp: filmmaker, film writer, artist and close friend who passed away on January 19, 2013. You are loved and missed, brother.

Looking at the Best Actor Academy Award nominations for the film year 2012, the one miss that clearly cries out for more attention is Liam Neeson’s powerful performance in Joe Carnahan’s excellent survival film The Grey, easily one of the best roles of Neeson’s career.
In Neeson’s case, his lack of a nomination was a case of neglect similar to the Albert Brooks snub in the Best Supporting Actor category for the film year 2011 for Drive(Nicolas Winding Refn, USA).
Along with negligence, other factors commonly prevent outstanding lead acting performances from getting the kind of critical attention they deserve. Sometimes it’s that the performance is in a film not considered “Oscar material” or even worthy of any substantial critical attention.
