How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

May 2022 represents the calm before the storm for Amazon Prime Video. Early June will see the arrival of the much-hyped third season of The Boys. Before all that, however, Prime has some other streaming goodies to tide you over.
This month is highlighted by a handful of intriguing original series. Season two of Amazon’s sleeper hit The Wilds premieres on May 6. This pulpy mystery series about a group of teenage girls marooned on an island is Prime Video’s version of Lost or Yellowjackets so give it a watch if that kind of thing sounds up your alley. Also arriving on May 6 is the true crime docuseries The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith.
Canada’s finest comedy goobers The Kids in the Hall return in a rebooted version of their sketch series on May 13. The week after that J.K. Simmons will try his hand at sci-fi once again...

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
And today we talk to the great Steve Zahn, currently starring in the impressive indie Cowboys. Conor and I were lucky enough to speak with Zahn about his eclectic career, including highlights such as Safe Men, Riding in Cars with Boys, and A Perfect Getaway.
We discuss the immense variety in his resume, from Reality Bites to Rescue Dawn, the slightly infamous legacy of Sundance fave Happy, Texas, the way he approaches each role, and a little-seen film called Blowin’ Smoke (Freak Talks About Sex).
Cowboys is currently available digitally.
For more from The B-Side, you can find every actor/director and the films discussed in one place here.

Let the Steve Zahnaissance commence. Whether it’s Saving Silverman, A Perfect Getaway, That Thing You Do!, You’ve Got Mail, Rescue Dawn, or even War for the Planet of the Apes, Steve Zahn’s appearance on the big screen is always a welcome one. His next role, in Anna Kerrigan’s modern-day western Cowboys, is one of his most acclaimed.
Premiering at Tribeca Film Festival last year, where Zahn picked up Best Actor and Kerrigan won Best Screenplay, the film follows the actor as a troubled but well-intentioned father who has recently separated from his wife Sally (Jillian Bell). When his wife refuses to let their trans son Joe (Sasha Knight) live as his authentic self, Troy runs off with Joe into the Montana wilderness. Ahead of a release next month on February 12, the first trailer and poster have arrived.
Watch the trailer below.
Cowboys arrives on February 12 in Virtual Cinemas and VOD.

MaryAnn’s quick take… Raises the bar on big dumb fun, with The Rock’s social-justice-warrior badass and his genuinely charming relationship with a gorilla, plus a ton of goofball sci-fi monster action turned up to 11. I’m “biast” (pro): love The Rock and Naomie Harris
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

Rampage raises the bar on big dumb fun. I’m not sure I ever thought that could be a thing, but it’s obvious: Just because a movie is dumb doesn’t mean it has to be stupid. It doesn’t mean it has to be insulting. Just because all those things usually go together doesn’t mean they have to.
So we have The Rock, who is a certifiable Movie Star, just always a pleasure to spend...

Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen reboot is picking up speed, filling out its cast, and moving closer to production, for an expected 2018 release. We already know that David Harbour (Stranger Things) will star as Hellboy, Ian McShane (Deadwood, American Gods) will play his adoptive father, Professor Trevor "Broom" Bruttenholm, and Neil Marshall (Game of Thrones, The Descent) will direct. Deadline is reporting that Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Resident Evil) is in final talks to play the (supposed) villain, the Blood Queen herself.
Based on recent fan and media reactions, the R-rated reboot has been making all the right moves and generating a lot of excitement. So, this latest news is either spectacular or horrible, depending upon your love/hate for Jovovich's work. It's a fair concern, because she was great in The Fifth Element and A Perfect Getaway (a really taut action-thriller), but she was awful in Ultraviolet and The Fourth Kind.

Stars: Dominic Purcell, Luke Mably, Marie Avgeropoulos, Claudia Church, Chelsea Edmundson, Stephen Lang, Tricia Helfer | Written by Shane Dax Taylor, Chad Law | Directed by Shane Dax Taylor
A genre-standard bickering couple take their woes to a small island in the Bahamas, where they hope to patch things up and get back on the right track. That track puts them on the same path as two other couples; the charismatic William and Mary (Stephen Lang and Claudia Church) and the horny Max and Nina (Dominic Purcell and Marie Avgeropoulos). While out wining and dining with the former, their beach house is ransacked and robbed. But whodunit? And will they stop at robbery?
With a story which slow-burns like an incense candle, ambling along at a languid pace, Fugitives (aka Isolation) is not the action-heavy gunfight-palooza its cast and synopsis might suggest. Even the normally terrifying Stephen Lang is in laid-back mode here,...

"This is what we got. It's a bank job, and everybody's gunna be going in on this one." A trailer has arrived for a film titled The Mason Brothers, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Keith Sutliff originally hailing from Tampa, Florida. The crime thriller is about a group of brothers + bank robbers who try to pull off a clean heist, but things go wrong. Starring Brandon Pearson, Matthew Webb, Michael Whelan, Julien Cesario, Chris Park, and Nazo Bravo. It's clear this is an homage to Tarantino and to Reservoir Dogs specifically, but it also seems to be inspired by Christopher Nolan's films, too. Doesn't look that good. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Keith Sutliff's The Mason Brothers, from YouTube (via Bd): A perfect getaway is a clean getaway. A group of outlaws attempt to reveal their brothers killer from a neighboring gang after being...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

The ever-likable and versatile actor Steve Zahn (above in A Perfect Getaway) has joined the cast of War for the Planet of the Apes. Zahn will play a new ape character, according to Deadline, though no details have been revealed. The secrecy is part and parcel of the project, which has been written by Matt Reeves and Mark Bomback, and will be directed by Reeves, who guided the previous installment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, to great success, including box office returns that exceeded $700 million worldwide. Dawn left uncertain the future of humanity, as men battled with apes led by Caesar (Andy Serkis), with greater warfare looming in the days ahead. Since 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the relaunch of the series has gained momentum, though it makes some...

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in October 2018.
You may or may have not noticed it but HBO's horror options have gotten pretty grim. Not grim as in scary but grim as in incredibly sparse.
Thankfully the cavalry is arriving in HBO New Releases for October 2018. This is a company that wisely realizes the importance of scary movies around Halloween time. 18 scary movies are coming to HBO Now and HBO Go streams this October. Cool! The catch is that they'll all be gone by month's end. Not cool! Oh well, it's better than nothing. The Descent will also be arriving at the beginning of the month for a much longer stay.
In terms of non-horror programming, HBO has plenty to offer in October. Recent favorites The Post and Game Night make their debut while slightly older classics Dances with Wolves,...

David Twohy goes from the world of Riddick to the world of time travel for his new thriller...
David Twohy's career first took off thanks to his writing, with his name on the screenplay credits for the likes of The Fugitive, Waterworld, Critters 2, Warlock and, er, G.I. Jane. His directorial breakthrough, however, came at his third attempt, Having steered films such as Disaster In Time and The Arrival (which itself isn't too bad), it was Pitch Black where everything clicked. It remains the best film he's directed to date (although we have a soft spot for A Perfect Getaway, which we talked about when chatting about whether star names ruin modern thrillers, here).
Twohy, following last year's latest Riddick film with Vin Diesel, is now circling a new time travel movie, which goes by the name of Replay. It's being funded by Relativity, and is based on the...

"Riddick" and "A Perfect Getaway" helmer David Twohy has signed on to direct "Replay" for Relativity Media.
Joe Gazzam penned the script which follows Tyler Vaughn, a test subject in a quantum experiment who is sent four days into the future. There he learns that his son has been killed and he is the prime suspect in the murder.
As each day ends, he's pulled back to the previous day, so he tries to solve his son's murder before he gets back to the present.
Ahmet Zappa, Alan Gasmer, Peter Jaysen and Ryan Kavanaugh are producing with filming aiming to begin in early 2015.

The Purge: Anarchy is kicking a respectable amount of ass at the box office with only some mighty Apes getting the better of it, and now this year's Halloween Horror Nights is ready to cause some anarchy of its own. Read on for details.
From the Press Release
As the gates to “Halloween Horror Nights” open, so too does the annual Purge begin at Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Orlando Resort with the debut of a terrifying new scarezone, “The Purge: Anarchy,” inspired by Universal Pictures’ new thriller, which scored the highest opening for a horror film this year.
“The Purge: Anarchy” scarezone will greet guests with pure unadulterated fear, bringing to life the turmoil and pandemonium that awaits those vulnerable to masked vigilantes in search of new victims. Reimagining the movie’s premise that on one night every year, any and all crime is made legal, the scarezone will...

Doubles down on the first film’s angry approach to class, inequality, and violence, and once again reflects an image of America that is ugly but only slightly distorted. I’m “biast” (pro): loved the first film

Last year, The Purge astonished me with one of the most daring speculative conceits to come out of a Hollywood studio in maybe forever, or certainly since the dystopic sci-fi of the 1970s. In a near-future America under what appears to be a religious dictatorship called the New Founding Fathers, all crime including murder is permitted — nay, encouraged — one night a year for a 12-hour period called the Purge. Vague religious justifications about “cleansing” smash up against the American “right” to be armed to the teeth and defend oneself against all threats, perceived or actual, with hints...

I’m back! It’s been a long time and I apologise for that, moving house turned out to be a far far longer process than I anticipated or had been led to believe. Three weeks turned into six, six weeks turned into three months and now here we are.
Aside from the length of time it takes, moving house was a real eye opener in other areas too. Specifically in terms of how I inform you week on week of all of this wonderful content available to stream and then how you have to put up with lacklustre delivery from various ISPs. I was living in someone else’s house on a connection that was not my own, not wanting to name names but there is one of the big three ISP’s in the UK which boasts about having one of, if not the, fastest broadband delivery on...

The unloved films of 2009 provide the focus in our final list of the 2000s' overlooked greats...
The year 2009 will partly be remembered as the year Avatar dominating the box office, with audiences flocking to see James Cameron's leafy pulp epic in shimmering 3D. Making almost $2.8bn worldwide, Avatar was a true behemoth, besting Cameron's own Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time (not adjusted for inflation) and hastening a rush of 3D films in the years that followed.
Films such as 2012, Sherlock Holmes and boozy comedy The Hangover were also among the top 10, but as always, some of the most memorable and individual films of the year were far from the most financially successful. So to round off our series of underrated flicks of the 2000s, here's our selection of 2009's overlooked films...

The Purge had such a successful opening weekend at the box office that a sequel went into development almost right away. The first bit of casting news came in last week and we now have word of four additional actors who are taking part in the movie.

Courtney Solomon’s “Getaway” is not to be confused with Sam Peckinpah’s 1972 movie “The Getaway”, or the 1994 Roger Donaldson remake starring Alec Baldwin, or the more recent 2009 thriller “A Perfect Getaway” by David Twohy. 2013′s “Getaway” is more “Fast and Furious” than caper film, and depending on your need for speed — you have one, right? — the film might just be up your alley. Just in case you fall into that category, “Getaway” speeds onto DVD/Blu-ray this November 26th. Former race car driver Brent Magna (Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, taking it and its unwitting owner (Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage. The best part about Courtney Solomona’s vehicular thriller is, without a doubt, watching Ethan Hawke...

From Summer Bay to Asgard, he's in demand from directors such as Michael Mann and Jj Abrams, but he'll give the best part of the next decade to being Marvel's hammer-throwing superhero
Chris Hemsworth, Aka Thor, God of Thunder, crown prince of Asgard, calls me from the M25. It's 6pm, and he's just wrapped for the day on Ron Howard's In The Heart Of The Sea, a true story about a ship destroyed by a sperm whale in 1820. It's shooting at Leavesden Studios, and Hemsworth is in the car home to London, where he and his family have been living for the past few years while he's been making movies, including last month's F1 drama Rush. He'll be here into the spring too, for Avengers: Age Of Ultron. "It's the new Hollywood," he says of Greater London, taking care not to reference the weather.

Earlier last week (sorry for the late posting!) I got the chance to check out Universal’s Riddick, the latest entry into the Chronicles of Riddick franchise that everyone assumed was dead after a poor second film. Does this latest film manage to recapture the magic that made everyone fall in love with the titular character to begin with? Or does it fall short? Come inside to check out my thoughts on the film.
The Basics
Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000's hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Riddick is clearly a passion project for writer/director David Twohy. The third entry in the series took its sweet time arriving to theaters, following 2004′s underwhelming The Chronicles of Riddick, but while that sequel has its fan, it didn’t stay in touch with what arguably made the first movie (Pitch Black) so appealing. Riddick isn’t a blockbuster character but an antihero monster slayer. We see the character return to those simple animalistic traits in the new film where he faces off against a batch of mercenaries and monsters on an unknown planet. But it wasn’t easy getting there. Twohy more than likely could have made a bigger sequel with a PG-13 slapped on, but he set his sights on a dirty R-rated Riddick film. And we’re all the better for it. Here’s our chat with Riddick director David Twohy: Both A Perfect Getaway and Riddick seem like a “back to...

Our favourite anti-hero and survivalist Riddick (Vin Diesel) has awoken in a hostile world of lethal alien predators in his latest on-screen chapter, Riddick, opening in theatres on Friday.
Following in the footsteps of Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, this new movie picks up with Riddick fighting for his survival after being left for dead on a desolate and sun-scorched planet by the Necromancers. Now finding himself a target for bounty hunters, figures from his past will play a role in his ultimate act of revenge.
Karl Urban, Bokeem Woodbine and Katee Sackhoff appear alongside Diesel in this latest movie, directed by David Twohy who helmed the previous Riddick movies and thriller A Perfect Getaway.

Summer's officially over and fall's here, and while the box office tends to take a major nosedive .round about now, there's always a chance of a breakout hit, especially with summer ending on such a weak note. When word came down that there were several more Riddick clips online, Graham and Ryan both tried to keep me from them…the rascals. They seem to find something wrong with my obsession. We’re fast approaching the September 6th release date and if all goes well, I’m already hoping for a fourth Riddick film.

I personally find David Twohy’s “Riddick” a bit odd. I like the direction they’re taking, going back to the franchise’s roots, but it’s a tad curious after the epic “The Chronicles of Riddick”. I’ve made my feelings about that movie pretty clear — I appreciated the ambition, but coming off “Pitch Black”, it was just way too ambitious, and felt like some other script re-tooled to be a Riddick movie. This latest installment, though, pure Riddick. This should have been the first sequel if you ask me. (But no one did, so whatevs.) Check out the latest trailer for “Riddick”. It’s essentially the same trailer as the previously released Red Band trailer, minus some blood and a few choice words. Comic-Con is in full swing and nerds everywhere are geeking out to the plethora of news and information coming their way. Among the cool things released were a pair of red band trailers for Kick-Ass 2 and Picthblack Again....er, Riddick. Come inside to check them out!
We haven't seen a whole lot from Kick-Ass 2 or Riddick, which is interesting because they both come out in a little over a month. So these red-band trailers were a welcome sight at this year's San Diego Comic-Con:
I'm really liking this Kick-Ass 2 trailer, and for me, it's the best look so far at this film. I've always been interested in this movie, but this is the first footage I've seen that makes it look like a must-see to me.
Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010's irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass' (Aaron Taylor-Johnson...

Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000’s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx).
In this red-band trailer, Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.
That’s one way to lose your head! Obvious best line in this trailer – “Why don’t you cut Him loose.” I’m all for that.
The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the...

As an abashed fan of the Riddick character, I await the upcoming Riddick in great anticipation. While I'm bummed that this looks like Pitch Black Redux, I can't really say a single thing bad about any of the promotional materials Universal has released so far. This movie is looking good.
Two more trailers join a whole host of material that we've already shown you.
