The cult classic 1976 Universal Pictures film Car Wash is getting the small-screen treatment from producer Malcolm D. Lee (“The Best Man” franchise) and writer Opey Olagbaju. A comedy series of the same name is in development at NBC from Universal Television.
Set at a modern-day DC car wash, the TV series focuses on an immigrant family’s generational and cultural clashes between father and son and their eclectic group of employees.
The logline reveals many similarities to the original film while using the TV format to make the story much bigger. The Michael Schultz-directed film follows the lives of a group of friends from Los Angeles who work at the Dee-Luxe Car Wash and the interesting characters they interact with one Friday in July.
Many notable names were part of the large ensemble cast including Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Franklyn Ajaye, Bill Duke, Pepe Serna,...

Exclusive: More ensemble drama series are reducing the number of episodes cast members are in as a way to save money. The series regulars on CBS’ FBI and FBI: Most Wanted will have their minimum guarantees trimmed by 2 episodes next season, Deadline has learned. The third FBI series, FBI: International, is not impacted, I hear. Reps for FBI producers Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television declined comment.
As Deadline reported exclusively this week, veteran cast members on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy also are getting their episodes cut next season by 3-4 in a cost-saving measure.
The move for the two FBI series mirrors the episodic guarantees reductions applied to Wolf/Uni TV’s Chicago and Law & Order dramas a year ago. The timing makes sense as such talent cost-cutting usually follows a renewal that nowadays comes with a flat or reduced license fee.

Exclusive: Jake Borelli will be departing ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy after seven years on the show, including being a series regular for the past five seasons, Deadline has learned. According to sources, Borelli is in negotiations to return next season for several episodes to wrap up the story of his character, Levi Schmitt.
Amid overall decline in linear ratings, it has become common practice for broadcast networks to ask for financial concessions on long-running series, which naturally become pricier as they age. As a high-end drama series headed into its 21st season with a large cast, most of whom have been on the show for years, Grey’s is expensive. I hear its renewal — like many other broadcast shows’ these days — came with a budget cut.
That is impacting the cast, with established stars faced with a reduction of their episodic guarantees, which means that they may be in fewer episodes next year,...

The end of the TV season is always heartbreaking.
Not only do our favorites wrap up for the season, but some shows end forever. And the 2024 season is one of the worst ever.
There are at least seven series ending that we don't want to say goodbye to, but the finales are coming up fast.
The 2024 season was more heartbreaking than most. The season was truncated because of the WGA writers' and Sga-aftra actors' strikes.
Many beloved shows had short seasons of 10-13 episodes, and some with even fewer new shows. There have been long hiatuses that seemed to begin almost as soon as shows finally started airing. Worst of all, many series cancelations were announced just as shows began airing.
There was a bloodbath over at many networks, but CBS had the highest number of casualties, with five of the seven shows we're most heartbroken about leaving that network.

“The Equalizer” has been renewed for Season 5 at CBS, Variety has learned.
“’The Equalizer,’ led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another dynamic season.”
With the renewal, the only current CBS series awaiting word of its fate is “NCIS: Hawai’i.” The network has renewed much of its scripted lineup already, including recent pickups for “Elsbeth” and the “FBI” franchise. CBS recently announced it was canceling both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas,” while shows like “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “Blue Bloods” and “Young Sheldon” are coming to an end.
Per CBS, “The Equalizer” is currently averaging over 10 million viewers per episode in Live+35 multiplatform viewing. The show is based on the 1980s CBS series of the same name.

Niecy Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has signed on to host the Los Angeles portion of next month’s Writers Guild Awards. The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Added L.A. awards exec producer Hugh Fink (“Saturday Night Live”): “Niecy Nash-Betts is the dream host for this year’s WGA Awards. The past three years have severely impacted the broadcast television landscape.
Following a decade of growth — remember the days of 100 pilots? — the TV landscape on broadcast is experiencing further contraction because of production delays caused by both the pandemic and Hollywood’s historic dual strikes in 2023. The result is fewer pilots, a shift to year-round development and now fewer scripted originals as networks bulk up on unscripted fare, cut costs and continue to see development money shifted toward streaming.
On the leadership front, Frances Berwick now has lone oversight of NBC after Susan Rovner was let go from NBCUniversal as part of a larger restructuring, with ABC (Craig Erwich), CBS (Amy Reisenbach), The CW (Brad Schwartz) and Fox (Rob Wade) continuing with their current executives.
The biggest shift in broadcast is the shortened 2023-24 seasons of scripted fare, production on which was delayed from the traditional summer start to the...

We generally prefer to focus on positive things at the start of a new year, but the fact is that every good show must come to an end, and we're about to say goodbye to some truly beloved series in 2024. We've already lost so many shows recently, including NCIS: Los Angeles and Magnum P.I.
But here we are to discuss it some more! Some of the shows on this list are going out on their own terms after long, successful runs. Others are being unceremoniously kicked to the curb due to low ratings, massive budgets, or departing stars.
One thing they all have in common? Their loss will really sting.
But one they all have in common is that they're shuffling off the airwaves sometime within the next 12 months, so join us as we bid farewell to the following series from across the TV landscape.
We can't say we'll miss all of these shows,...

The sirens you hear on social media are the sounds of diehard Station 19 fans sounding the alarm over the cancellation of the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.
The loud signal boosting ahead of what will be the seventh and final season of the firefighter drama comes after ABC on Dec. 8 announced that Station 19 will conclude with 10 episodes this year — the show’s shortest order since it debuted — like Grey’s — as a midseason replacement show when it launched in spring 2018.
With Station 19 and Grey’s serving as the only remaining shows on ABC produced by hitmaker Shonda Rhimes — who is now based exclusively at Netflix — why would the network ax one of its Thursday staples? The answer can be found in the math.
Station 19, which started off as a backdoor pilot in season 14 of Grey’s, finished the 2022-23 broadcast season as the No. 13 drama among the advertiser-coveted...

Famed TV show creator Chuck Lorre has developed hit after hit. The TV legend always seems to have new projects in the works, and this year is no different. Lorre’s new series Bookie is just getting started, and he has at least one more project in development with Max. He also has to say goodbye to two shows, though. Young Sheldon and Bob Hearts Abishola, both airing on CBS, will end after the 2024 TV season. Lorre isn’t thrilled about that.

As previously reported, CBS announced that Bob Hearts Abishola will be coming to an end with its upcoming fifth season, set to premiere on Monday, February 12 at 8:30/7:30c. The Season 4 finale of Bob Hearts Abishola teased drastic changes to the show’s formula setting the stage for Abishola (Folake Olowofoyeku) and Bob (Billy Gardell) to head to Baltimore, leaving their friends (and much of the cast) back in Detroit. That came after Deadline reported that of the 13 main cast members, only Gardell and Olowofoyeku would remain series regulars for Season 5. In the final Season 4 episode, “Uncharted Waters of Mediocrity,” Abishola anxiously awaited her acceptance letter to the Baltimore medical school Johns Hopkins. Doubt set in as she spiraled into depression upon realizing she hadn’t received it. Meanwhile, Bob battled his subconscious, portrayed as his father, realizing he didn’t want to leave Detroit.
