Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy was a huge deal in the publishing world. The books kicked off with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". When a book series generates as much heat as this one, the movies come calling. Sure enough, the entire original trilogy was adapted into three films in Sweden. Later, Hollywood took a stab at it, too, with English-language adaptations, but we'll get to those later. First, though, let's talk about the original trilogy and the correct order to watch it.

If you don’t have the memory of a goldfish (like me), you might remember that Amazon was developing a TV series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That was over three years ago, and Variety has now reported that they’ve finally snagged a showrunner for the series.
Veena Sud, best known for developing The Killing for AMC, is set to serve as showrunner on Amazon’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Current details regarding the series are being kept under wraps, but it was originally reported that the project would not be a sequel or continuation of the story from the books or films, but would instead place Lisbeth Salander in today’s world with a new setting, new characters, and new story. Amazon MGM Studios will produce the series with Left Bank Pictures.

It’s been over ten years since David Fincher introduced the world to his version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Rooney Mara headlined the feature as Lisbeth Salander and the film was highly regarded by critics and audiences. Originally, Fincher planned to write and direct the sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest with Sony confirming the news themselves; however, constant delays and rewrites saw the studio opt to go with a reboot instead, which brings us to The Girl in the Spider’s Web. That film bombed commercially and critically. Sony

Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a modern literary phenomenon, spawning a mini-media empire. First published in 2005 in Sweden, it launched the ‘Millennium’ series, which went on to include The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Since then, we’ve seen both American and Swedish movie adaptations, with Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy taking turns playing iconic hacker hero Lisbeth Salander.
Now it seems that we’re in for more, as Variety is reporting that Amazon and Sony are teaming up for a new TV adaptation of the property. Fortunately for viewers that might be getting a bit tired of the original stories, the upcoming show is set to break new ground, as it’ll take place in a separate continuity to the books, imagining what Lisbeth Salander would be like in the 2020s.

Sequels always face an uphill battle with the public, and for good reason. When they follow a perfectly good standalone story, it begs the question of what need there even is for a continuation of that story and those characters. Oftentimes the serendipitous, lightning-in-a-bottle effect that informed the making of the initial story has moved on by the time that the original creative team (if you’re so lucky as to have them returning) sits down to make the nascent franchise’s second installment. Why not just leave well enough alone? The novel The Girl Who Played with Fire easily rebuffs all

The world-famous Swedish vigilante hacker Lisbeth Salander is back, and this time she’s saving the world from nuclear annihilation. It’s a bit of a shift for Salander; when last we saw her in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” she was solving serial murders and exacting painful revenge on abusive male accountants.
In Fede Alvarez’s “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” she’s stealing from the Nsa, surviving explosions in bathtubs and getting in a whole bunch of car chases. It’s like if “Goldfinger” was the sequel to “Psycho.” It may be undeniably cool to watch, but it’s hard to deny that it’s a tonal Crazy Ivan.

“The Girl in the Spider’s Web” heroine Lisbeth Salander isn’t just a near-superhero with a hidden identity and cool gadgets who helps others. She’s also the survivor of abuse, and because it comes out in the midst of the #MeToo movement, the film feels especially timely.
But Claire Foy doesn’t see Salander as a face of #MeToo, which she says represents something far bigger.
“No!” Foy told press at the footage presentation of the film at Sony Pictures on Tuesday. “We were doing prep while it was all going on, and I took great solace in the fact that the movie wasn’t jumping on what would be seen a bandwagon. The interest in Lisbeth has always been there, I think everyone is going to be deeply fascinated by her, and much like the #MeToo movement, it’s not because it’s timely — it’s always been there is the reality.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series has had a bit of a bumpy ride over on this side of the pond. Though the trilogy was a huge hit overseas when it was adapted for the big screen, it didn’t find the same success back in 2011 when director David Fincher remade it.
The movie under-performed at the box office big time and the follow-up (thought to be The Girl Who Played with Fire) spiraled down into development hell. Further problems behind the scenes with the various filmmakers and producers complicated the process even more and all hope seemed to be lost for a sequel.
Fast-forward to last year, when we learned that Sony had scrapped Played With Fire and instead chose to reboot the property, with director Fede Alvarez in charge and the fourth installment in the book series, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, acting as the source material.

The world met Lisbeth Salander, the heroine of Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy, when The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was published in 2005. She only became more popular when Swedish production company Yellow Bird adapted the crime thriller and its two sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, for the screen in 2009.
Noomi Rapace plays Lisbeth, a prodigious ward of the state who has poor social skills and a photographic memory, while Michael Nyqvist plays Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist who enlists her help in solving a cold case and later becomes involved in uncovering a government conspiracy in her past.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series has had a bit of a bumpy ride over on this side of the pond. Though the trilogy was a huge hit overseas when it was adapted for the big screen, it didn’t find the same success back in 2011 when David Fincher remade it.

Claire Foy appears to be the frontrunner to replace Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in Sony's The Girl In The Spider's Web.
It’s been 12 years since the publication of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo took the literary world by storm with its spikey anti-heroine Lisbeth Salander. Four movies and two interpretations later, it remains a coveted role for almost any young actor. Part Pippi Longstocking and part avenging goth-punk out to punish misogynists and abusers wherever they hide, Stieg Larsson’s creation is still so potent that Sony Pictures is ready to take another stab at piercing the character onscreen, and possibly with The Crown’s Claire Foy too.
As according to anonymous sources over at The Wrap, Foy is the frontrunner whom Sony and director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) are zeroing in on to star in The Girl In The Spider’s Web.

Claire Foy may be the next Lisbeth Salander. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress, who plays Queen Elizabeth in Netflix’s “The Crown,” is being courted by Sony to star in the film adaptation of “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” David Lagercrantz’s 2015 novel, the fourth in the Millennium series originally started by late Swedish author Stieg Larsson. “Don’t Breathe” director Fede Alvarez is on board to helm the project.
Sources tell THR that after searching for the right actress to play the hacker, the studio narrowed the list down to two finalists, Foy and Felicity Jones. An offer has been made to Foy, but there has been some scheduling conflicts.

The tale of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is an odd one. Based on Stieg Larsson’s bestselling thriller novel of the same name, the film adaptation was a huge hit overseas, spawning several sequels and even a Us remake. Directed by David Fincher and starring Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, the English version released back in 2011 and while not a massive hit, it did do fairly well with both critics and at the box office.
However, here we are, six years later and still, there’s been no word on a sequel. Well, until today that is. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series that started with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo seemed to have all the promise for a Hollywood franchise. The source material was beloved and acclaimed worldwide, and a complete trilogy starring Noomi Rapace had even been produced in the novels’ home country of Sweden. The American adaptation had a grade-a pedigree with Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, and Stellan Skarsgård. It even had the amazing talents of David Fincher behind it. What’s more is that the film was good. More than good. It was great.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t the feel bad film of the Christmas season of 2011 that audiences wanted, and despite the big fan base, the film was only a modest success, making $230 million worldwide. It’s not a flop by any means, but with a budget of $90 million (with costs likely costing around $180 million after advertising), it was likely...

Back and 2011, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the David Fincher-directed adaptation of the first book in the Millennium Trilogy (which has since been renamed the Lisbeth Salander Series) hit theaters. The movie starred Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, both of whom gave stellar performances to these beloved characters. In the eyes of some fans of the source material, the movie was even superior to the original Swedish film — which was already a pretty high bar.
For one reason or another, however, the film didn’t perform too well. It made over $232 million worldwide, but with a production budget of $90 million, and what we can assume is around a $90 million marketing budget, it would have had to net over $180 million in order to make a profit. Taking into account the theaters’ share of the gross, the film likely resulted in a loss of about $25 million.

It’s been a long and winding road for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo franchise over here in North America. Though David Fincher’s film was compelling and full of strong performances, it didn’t really do much for audiences and despite grossing $232.6 million worldwide, the film’s sequel was put on hold.
With Fincher having cited issue with the studio during production, and making it clear in recent years that he wasn’t too eager to return, it seemed like the franchise might be dead, with interest in the properly quickly dwindling the longer it took Sony to make a decision.
Just when all hope seemed lost, however, it was announced that the studio would be bringing us more of Lisbeth Salander, but not in the manner that most people expected. That’s because instead of adapting the next novel in the trilogy, The Girl who Played with Fire,...

The last few years have seen the original team of Sony’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo step away from committing to a follow-up — some fairly quickly (David Fincher) and others taking their time (Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara) — but we now, finally, have some momentum. Last year, we learned that Steven Knight (Locke, Eastern Promises) was hired to adapt David Lagercrantz‘s The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and Sony is now eying a director.
According to Variety, Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe, Evil Dead) has entered the running to helm this sequel. It certainly makes sense why the studio is looking to hand the franchise over to the director, whose latest horror feature made over $150 million worldwide on a budget under $10 million. The taut, tightly directed Don’t Breathe also drew comparisons to Fincher’s Panic Room, so it’s only fitting he may take up the mantle here.

Update: Variety seems to have removed the mention of Rooney Mara from their report. As such, it’s unclear now if she’ll be returning to reprise her role.
Sony is apparently eyeing Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez to helm their sequel to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which is going to be called The Girl in the Spider’s Web. Variety is the one with the news, and they’re reporting that Rooney Mara is expected to return as hacker Lizbeth Salander, with the film set to be based on the new novel of the same name by David Lagercrantz (which is the fourth entry into the series).
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Spider’s Web follows Salander during another investigation with Mikael Blomkvist (played by Daniel Craig in the first film), as the duo uncover a “web of government spies and cyber criminals with deadly stakes.

She snagged an Oscar nomination for the role, and was due to return for the two follow-ups, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.

Thus, the film of The Girl Who Played With Fire stalled, even though a screenplay was said to be in place.
