- TriviaAccording to witnesses, the Romanov daughters did indeed survive the first hail of bullets of the firing squad. It was discovered that this was because they had sewn so many jewels into the lining of their clothes in anticipation of their escape, they served as makeshift bulletproof vests. They were subsequently bayoneted to death.
- GoofsThe opening indicates the action takes place in 1917. Consideration by the British to send a ship to evacuate the Romanovs from Russia occurred in the spring of 1917, when the provisional Russian government was still in power. The scene shifts to Ipatiev House in Ekaterinburg, Siberia, where the Tsar and Tsarina speak of their cousin, King George, sending a ship to rescue the Imperial family. The Romanovs were imprisoned and later executed in the Ipatiev House by the Bolsheviks (who were then in power) in the summer of 1918, more than a year later, by which time the Tsar and Tsarina were well aware that the British were not sending a ship to rescue them. Moreover, Ekaterinburg is thousands of miles away from any seaport.

A solid episode
So many parts of this episode make it a good one. The connection to 1917 and the former King during World War I was interesting and great to watch. One of The Crown's biggest strengths is its depiction of historic events and how this intertwines with the crown. It does not limit itself to its historic setting but goes back to earlier times to show the rich and complicated past. The Romanov family and their sad demise was a good storyline and it tied really nicely to Boris Yeltsin and who he was as a leader.
One of the other big moments in the episode was the rift between Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. Two different souls who are still committed to each other. Phillip is still trying to keep himself engaged with life and find something for himself. The dialogue and heated exchange between the pair was great writing and direction. Yet another strength of the crown and it's rich dialogue and depth behind it. I am liking the balance this season is having so far by giving enough screen time to all its main characters.
7.5/10.
