Disappointing
Hughmanity29 August 2023
What used to make Justified great was the excellent and charismatic villains along with witty repartee dialogue between Raylan and said antagonists, with some good action and plot twists sprinkled in. This series has a less compelling villain who is quite obvious in his machinations and struts around in his white briefs far too often for my taste. He's hardly ever on screen with Raylan so the dialogue is minimal.

We also get some side characters who are inserted for little reason like his supposedly 15-year-old daughter Willa, played by Timothy Olyphant's real life daughter who is 20 and it shows. She can raise her voice an octave but we still have eyes. The writers do her no favors, she just plays the usual bratty and disobedient teen girl trope that is seemingly in every show now, and doesn't move the plot forward in any way but rather acts as a drag on it with distracting annoyance.

The love interest for Raylan is so far off from Ava Crowder or Winona Hawkins that it just doesn't come across as believable. Raylan is probably out of almost every woman's league but in this case it's really a bridge too far.

Neither the plot nor the dialogue are all that clever. Raylan gets in a few quips but it just seems like they stole the lines from the original Justified and repurposed them here. It's great to see Raylan on screen again and Sweety (Vondie Curtis-Hall) is also a lot of fun to watch so I still give this a 6, but when they're off screen it's a 3 or 4. Were they justified in making this show? Mostly not.

Why, oh why?
christas723 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I think I'm being generous giving this a 6. I only did so because Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) is back and I was very much looking forward to this spinoff.

What's driving me insane is the daughter. First, she's not the right age. Second (and most annoying) is there is no way on this earth Winona (Raylan's ex wife) would ever raise such a stringy, unkept, foul mouthed, belligerent, loser brat. Her character is totally unbelievable and ruining the show for me.

Second issue is the criminal/bad guy/nemesis. The criminals in the original Justified did what they did for some type of reason - primarily because they lived in a poor backwoods mining town and they either wanted to survive or they wanted to thrive without earning it. This bad guy just seems like a psychopath who murders people for the fun of it. It's only the second episode and dude has killed 6-8 people so far. Why?

The original Justified was somewhat believable. This one seems like the writers just phoned it in without having a clue what the original was about.

Better than some are saying
bgar-8093221 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't as good as the original by any means but it scratches the itch. Raylan is still a great character. It's dragged down a bit by his annoying daughter. That doesn't kill it though. The villain is pretty good, he's no Boyd Crowder but he's menacing and erratic enough to make a good story. It's in Detroit so it has a vastly different setting and the setting doesn't really work as well for me though but it's not bad. I heard it was a mini-series and was thankful for that because it scratches that itch then excuses itself. The very end they show Boyd Crowder though like another season is going to happen. If it does, I'll watch it but I'd rather they just end on a semi-decent note.

Looking forward to next season
Supermanfan-1317 April 2024
The original Justified is one of my favorite shows of all-time. I'm excited to see where this is going but so far the only thing I know is I can't stand the daughter. Having said that, besides hating the daughter, Justified: City Primeval is one of the best new shows in years. This takes place 15 years after the original ended and Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) is now a Marshall in Florida until a case brings him to Detroit to chase a violent sociopath (Boyd Holbrook). The writing and acting is what makes this show so special. This has absolutely lived up the original and has gotten nothing but great reviews by just about everyone. I believe this is only a limited series back for just this one season but I really hope they change their minds in that because this was terrific and you can't have enough Justified in my opinion.

Go In Knowing It's Not...
MegRK112117 April 2024
The Justified we know and love, but it was still wonderful to see Tim back as Raylan. It was 100% jarring watching Raylan in Detroit and outside of Kentucky (especially right after finishing another rewatch of the original series), but I felt it was decent. This isn't the Justified we know. Raylan is in a new element - it was almost like culture shock because I've watched the OG series so much I'm used to the Southern accents, the brightness (the color tone of CP was dark which also threw me off), and the quirkiness and wit of the villains. In CP, the villains are true villains - nothing likable or redeeming about them (though Holbrook was fantastic in his role), which is a drastic change from Justified. We all loved Boyd and rooted for him while wanting him to get caught. All of that can be credited to Walt for bringing such vitality to a character that was only supposed to be in the OG series pilot. I missed the fun banter between Raylan and the bad guys - we didn't get that here. And I get why. We weren't supposed to. This was supposed to be different. And I see why a lot of fans were less than thrilled with City Primeval. I get it and they all have valid points as to why they didn't like this iteration and I agree with them. It was slow at times but in typical Justified fashion, once everything came together it picked up fast and hard. So that being said, I enjoyed it for what it was. I knew it would be different - no Art, Rachel, Tim, Winona, Boyd, Ava, Wynn, Vasquez. I knew it wouldn't be the Justified I loved. The OG series was a perfect show start to finish for me, with the series finale being THE best finale I've seen to date. That's why I appreciated CP a bit because they weren't trying to nor did they set out to make a Justified 2.0. Yes, there were a lot of things I was less than thrilled about. Yes, the format was different and the way everything played out was a bit...not confusing per say...maybe perplexing? Yeah, perplexing is the right word. You didn't know who you could trust. You didn't know who was clean and who was dirty. The actors were great, but like a lot of people said, this iteration was based on a book by Elmore Leonard that had nothing to do with Raylan and the creators of the show put him in anyway. Which makes sense because any version of Justified without Tim/Raylan isn't Justified. But, and hopefully you're still with me, in the end it's worth it. I swear and promise you that. In regards to a second "season", I'm torn. On one hand, hell yes after that ending (just can't use City Primeval as part of the title). If you watched you know why. But on the other hand, the OG series (like I said) ended in sheer and utter perfection with "Because we dug coal together" that I don't know if we really should have a second season. Why mess with perfection? Either way, I'd be happy because I do trust the creators, writers, and Tim. I'd say give it a shot, but go in with an open mind and try not to compare the two.

Much Better After the Daughter Left.
jayydee32 April 2024
The first few episodes were disappointing and with a repeat theme these days ---"here we go again"------- -- a single law enforcement officer with a spoiled brat teenager in tow. It seems to be the trend with crime movies these days and is getting tiresome. Once the daughter, who is a terrible actor and has no screen presence and talks like a 7 year old baby. Once she moves on the show really picked up. The actors were a bit over the top to start with but became much more believeable as the show progressed. Enjoyed the series once the daughter finally left, which should have been much earlier. The villain is a bit much and hard to believe. The writers could have fine tuned this a bit more. Overall well done and worth watching.

Needs Some Boyd Crowder
thewordman27 July 2023
I really wanted to like this series. But three episodes in, it feels like our modern-day Matt Dillon has been worm-holed into an alternate universe of lackluster writing, uninteresting supporting characters, and stodgy direction. No Elmore Leonard vibe this time... just the sort of flaccid storytelling more typical of network cop dramas. And, as a dad with three daughters and my fair share of parental challenges, I feel the whole father-daughter thread is unconvincing. Check out Bosch for some really good writing in that vein. Most of all, this new outing needs an intriguing and likable villain. Give me Boyd Crowder!

The unnecessary daughter
erinreedd21 July 2023
I love all things Timothy Olyphant, the original Justified and I love the Raylan Givens character. What I can do without is the Willa character. I find her to be annoying and unnecessary. I know it's only 2 episodes in, but she's added nothing to the show at all, except teenage disobedience. This character is an obvious ploy and someone we're supposed to care about when she's abducted or otherwise harmed. Maybe the impetus for Raylan to break a law, become angrier, show vulnerability, etc. Either way she's irritating and the least the writers could've done was make her character likable. I'm still gonna watch because of Mr. Olyphant and the rest of the cast, but I really hope her character has less screen time.

Glad to see Raylan again
Rob133117 February 2024
Considering Justified is one of my favorite shows ever I've really been looking forward to Justified: City Primeval ever since I first heard about it. Then when I saw the trailers my expectations grew even more. Well, it's finally here and I can say without hesitation that this series not only met those expectations but surpassed them in every way. Timothy Olyphant returns as Raylan Givens. If there's ever been an actor perfect for a role it's Olyphant as Givens. This role was made for him. This series brings everything you loved about the original but also with a fresh take. I really can't recommend this show enough. Whether you're a fan of the original Justified or not, this is a must watch.

Willa's character :(((
yevhenyia24 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I did not know how I missed Raylan until I saw the trailer for Justified: City Primeval and the first 2 episodes. Everything's great, but Willa and some gaps in the script. From all the adult audience to the creators of adult shows - please, stop adding annoying teenage characters to the script. The actress playing Willa is absolutely horrible. Also, Willa does not act as a daughter of a U. S. Marshal. Come on. She acts as if her dad did not teach her anything about crime and violence. It is so unlikely that the Marshal's daughter will walk the dangerous Detroit streets alone, as well as it is unlikely that she will meet an unknown dude because he said he knows his dad. Really? Also, I do not believe that two guys trying to kidnap Marshal and his daughter would ever walk free from the court. It is nonsense.

Anyway, Olyphant and Boyd Holbrook are awesome. I'll continue to watch the show.

I really wanted this spinoff to be great
paulasmith-2965810 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
But 5 episodes in, it is just getting worse. Thank goodness his daughter is gone. What a annoying brat and so predictable of lame writing.

Where is the banter, the Great dialog of the original Justified.

The cast is lack luster and the only good actor besides Raylan is the bar owner.

The 5 episode was the most boring. Raylan going to bed with the black judge was ridiculous. I am not sure at this point I will be watching this series anymore.

The story line is all over the place. What happened to the Albanians? Now they are blackmailing people from the black book.

The guy running around in his skivies is a cartoon of himself.

Great to see Raylan back in the saddle!
bdborchman3 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know what these other reviews are all complaining about: this was a really good show harkening back to the original multiple times, and Timmy Olyphant's daughter wasn't TOO bad. Reasonable plot, terrific setting, and several decent new characters place Raylan back in the driver's seat for a new adventure

SPOILERS .

. .

. The ending made up for any missteps along the way! Can't wait to see if they make another. Throughout the whole thing, I loved seeing several old favorites making cameos here and there. Even Luiz Guzman's brand new character was fun for a minute! My thanks to all the writers and producers for creating this limited series and making my 2023.

Show runners: get rid of Willa!
tchaffee-1024322 July 2023
It's a good thing the writers are currently on strike; that means you can get new ones when the strike is over! The way they wrote the character Willa is horrible . Please send her back to Florida or whatever.

Vivian, if you read this, please know that this is just your first gig. You have your dad's smile, but you were miscast into this role that is setting you up for a lot of criticism. I can't wait to see you in roles that actually make sense.

The good part of this show is that it still has Timothy Olyphant doing Raylan. There are also some really good supporting actors in this show. I have hope that this show will get better and "justify" itself.

Love the show, but can't stand Willas character
denisebb-1048810 January 2024
Off the bat, they have Willa making poor choices going out in the city alone meeting with a strange man, knowing the kind of work her dad is involved in. And then they have him staying out late while she's in the hotel room and knowing she's not in the room later , but still not going back. But I do absolutely love the show, but I would think the daughter of somebody like that would have more sense. I just don't know that her acting is all that great either either, but I understand she's a kid

But I like it better than the regular justified.

I found the original justified hard to follow at times.

I would love to see a second season.

Raylan is as great as ever, everyone else... not so much
veleskir27 July 2023
Raylan is fantastic. His dry sense of humor has returned and he's still an absolute hoot to watch. Whenever he's on screen, it feels like the Justified I used to watch.

It's almost everyone else that's the problem. The bad guy ain't anywhere near as charismatic as the bad guys from the previous seasons. The daughter is annoying at worst and boring at best. He doesn't have any fun, witty partners like Art Mullen or Tim Gutterson.

And none of this is even bothering to mention how outside of Raylan, the writing seems... off. Every two seconds someone has to say "white guy bad" or remind Raylan of his "privilege". Even his own white daughter does it, "He's not bad for a white guy".

It's embarrassing.

If this show didn't have Raylan in it, I wouldn't watch it. I'd rate it a 2/10. Not a 6.

Raglan Good Daughter Bad
rolandfry15 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Good to see Raylan back. Dealing with scum. Bad guys you would like to help Raylan put six feet under. Plot was good, but I am sorry the daughter was just annoying from day one. Spoilt brat who you wish would just go back to mummy and keep quiet.

The bad guy was a bit of a cartoon but it was good to see him get what was coming to him. Last episode opened up the possibility of Raylan meeting with an old friend, which could be interesting in second season. Hopefully the daughter will be sent to a boarding school so she will not be in the second series. Would recommend this series, not as good as the original Justified, but hopefully it will get better.

Willa character ... is his daughter Vivian Olyphant
wfoux26 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The 'Willa' actress is Vivian Olyphant, Timothy's real daughter. But, she needs additional acting lessons if she is going to stay on a show of this quality. She is not close to dad Timothy's talent, just distracting to the show with her lack of experience. The 'flight out' on this episode may signal her departure, let's hope so.

I like the show so far and the rest of the casting talent is great. I like the direction of the plot and Timothy is outstanding as expected. Vivian Olyphant 'Willa' character isn't a reason to quit watching, you gave your daughter a chance Timothy, now on with the show.

"Sometimes it takes an angry white guy to catch an angry white guy." - Ep. #1, Detective Wendell Robinson to Raylan Givens
classicsoncall20 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Coming out nearly a full decade following the conclusion of the original series, 'City Primeval' marks the return of U. S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) with a completely new cast, transitioning from the backwoods environs of rural Kentucky to the mean streets of Detroit, Michigan. As if to mark the passage of time, Raylan sports a chin full of gray stubble and spends a minimal amount of time with his teenage daughter Willa, portrayed by Olyphant's real life daughter Vivian. I'm pretty much in agreement with a host of other reviews here that state she wasn't entirely necessary for this sequel, and I wasn't sorry to see her exit after the third episode. The principal story has Raylan on the hunt for homicidal sociopath Clement Mansell (Boyd Holbrook), who by some estimates might have been even more evil that Boyd Crowder, if not slightly more sophisticated than Dewey Crowe. I was somewhat conflicted by Givens' relationship with attorney Carolyn Wilder (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor). You can include diversity in films and TV to a certain extent, but here I thought it fell outside of Raylan's ethical boundaries, such as they were established in the prior series. My favorite character here was probably tavern owner Marcus Sweeton (Vondie Curtis-Hall), going by Sweetie, conveying the world weary exhaustion of a man beaten down by the circumstances of his life and looking for that one big score to set it off in a different direction. Only problem is, he got tangled up with Clement Mansell, realizing too late that teaming up with the madman was a wrong career move. Admittedly not as strong as the original series, it would have been hard to compete with six full seasons of revolving characters in a one and done format, although the final episode hinted at both an end to Raylan's story and a continuation of it, should the powers that be decide on a sequel. I'd be all for it if it meant the return of some of the original principals, among them the notorious Boyd Crowder, fresh out of prison and on the run.

2 Really bad characters
ecolabum20 July 2023
Everyone is pulling their weight except for the villain and daughter.

The villain went to the Walmart school of acting. The writing for the bad guy is also lame.

The daughter's voice should be on an animated show. Her acting is laughable, especially with that hideous voice. As much as she walks around alone it's pretty obvious she is going to wind up abducted.

Hopefully the flashbacks are kept to a minimum because most shows get annoying when overdoing that.

I'll keep watching for now cause Raylon is Raylon. The story itself is a good one and has me intrigued.

I'm wrapping this up during Ep 2, 42 minutes in.

only watchable for Raylan
otterman6211 September 2023
I loved "old" Justified and so this "new" Justified is a bitter disappointment. One of the main appeals of Old Justified was the unusual (to a UK based viewer) location, and Raylans interaction with his friends and the villains. "New" Justified has basically got rid of all those features. The new version is set in Detroit so looks like any one of half a dozen other cop shows , and the scenery is pretty depressing. There are no real characters around Raylan, except the underused Wendell, for him to exchange banter with. He does have the most annoying daughter who is somewhere between brat and half wit, and you cant really see Raylan raising her that way. The villain spends too much time wandering around in white Y fronts ( who wears white y fronts anymore?) and Boyd Crowder would eat him for breakfast.

Bring back old Justified , get the old cast together, move it back to Kentucky and get some decent writers. Please!

Seems alright, except for the daughter
eferrorfile24 July 2023
Like many others have mentioned, the daughter is very, very, VERY annoying. I don't think the actress was a good choice, she doesn't play the part well. Please replace the actress at least. I like the idea of having a daughter character around, but that requires a likeable actress. What we got so far, feels very hollow and just generally annoying, not in a way that'd be a sign of an outstanding performance.

But otherwise, show seems interesting enough. Love Holbrook's performance as the villain so far, really good! However, he's not at the level of the original show's Boyd Crowder, at least not yet after seeing just two episodes. Raylan is still as great as he ever was, Olyphant pull this character off really well. Like the original show never ended.

There's always a but, and this is it. Writing isn't as captivating as the original had it. Feels like a sloppier job, not nearly as focused, or detailed even? I don't know a better word for it, but it feels like there's something lacking that the original had from the very first moment.

This one has a lot of room to grow, which I hope happens. I've been waiting for this show ever since it was rumored, so far the highest rating I could give it would be 7/10. Not bad, not amazing. But like I said, seems interesting. Production values seem to be on point, sounds and looks good. Definitely has potential to become a great show.

Worthy Addition to the Canon
kellibroers17 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Thrilled I ignored the bad reviews. This reboot is a worthy addition to the Justified canon. The writing is as crisp as ever and the execution is true to the spirit of the Leonard source material. The pace of the season is satisfying. I was concerned they wouldn't be able to replace Harlan as a character, but they did a fine job of making Detroit a player.

I saw a professional critic opine they thought Raylan doesn't fit in Detroit. Raylan doesn't fit in Harlan or Miami either - he's a 19th Century lawman living in a modern world.

Additionally, there are many folks irritated about Willa for myriad reasons: her voice is annoying; she's bratty; she's too old; she doesn't serve a purpose. I challenge them to watch again. As much as we all love Raylan, he's not exactly a present parent. All things considered, Willa is a saint or at least just a normal teenage girl with some minor dad issues. As to her purpose, I don't think it's too far of a leap to say she's a barometer of Raylan's growth throughout the season. That would have been harder to do if they hadn't aged her.

Speaking of age, it was so refreshing to see an age appropriate love interest for Raylan. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor is splendid in this role.

If the Albanians serve no other purpose, we get a great piece of dialogue on real justice versus justice via the system.

I agree with complaints that we don't get enough Raylan and Mansell dialogue - that was a lost opportunity. But what we were given was entertaining.

Finally, if I'm ranking this with the original series, it's far above Season 5.

Y'all better not be doing that with the stupid daughter bit
caelancross25 July 2023
So far the show is compelling and Timothy is holding it down with his natural charisma. There is just one thing that I will not be able to tolerate if it continues. His 15yr old daughter has done some stupid stuff and I just hope she gets the full picture of the situation and understands that she can't keep putting herself in harms way. It's such an old trope of having one character who is close to the lead that doesn't understand the gravity of the situation and villianizes the main character.

The characters are all well set up by the second episode, but I hate when shows fall into these lazy writing cliches.

The return we have waited for ,epic new bad guy, epic 8 episode miniseries
frostyboi20107 January 2024
With new bad guy on the loose in Detroit, Timothy olyphont breaks out the stenson, & returns as deputy marshal raylen givens to gives us a spectacular 8 episode mini series that feels like a old friend with new characters and new faces all wrapt into one new series from elmore Lenord and even some main show justified characters as well.

It feels like watching and feeling at home watching the new series. Cannot wait to get a physical copy of it on DVD to sit right next to my justified DVD collection and books.

10/10 for series revial and acting on par of what made everyone fall in love with the orginal cast and show... cannot wait to see what they do next!

It's his daughter.....
johnnysoup28 July 2023
They won't be getting rid of Willa...Unreal, so there you have it. No skill, but she has bloodlines. Nepotism at it worst. Shame on Tim for making this happen. He HAS to know that she didn't test well. Didn't anybody want to stand up and say something? It's also missing the likeable characters that the original had. Harlin country was a little slow and that made for some fun and witty moments. This is a little dull. In the end this week nt last 3 seasons. I'd be surprised if it has another. They was him back (Tim) so he played out his hand. This is what we get. Too bad, I was jazzed for the reboot..
