Aubrey Plaza and Joe Wengert have set up the animated comedy series “Kevin” at Amazon’s Prime Video, Variety has learned.
Plaza and Wengert are co-writers and executive producers on the series, with Wengert also serving as showrunner. Dan Murphy will also executive produce. The series is produced by animation Titmouse, Plaza and Murphy’s Evil Hag Productions, and Amazon MGM Studios.
The official logline for the series states that it is about “a life-long housecat who decides that he doesn’t want to live with people anymore. Loosely inspired by a real break-up and the cat caught in the middle, Kevin dares to ask himself, “Is there a world where I don’t do the owner thing and am just… single for the rest of my life?”

The 2022 Sundance Film Festival arguably was among the best years for recent breakout filmmakers. Several new filmmakers jumped out as promising voices: Cooper Raiff with “Cha Cha Smooth,” Nikyatu Jusu with “Nanny,” and Julian Higgins with “God’s Country.” But arguably, the film that popped the most, perhaps because of its second life on Netflix and streaming services, was John Patton Ford’s “Emily The Criminal” starring Aubrey Plaza.

Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) are set to star in the revenge thriller Huntington for writer/director John Patton Ford, and Deadline reports that A24 has just boarded the project to handle its domestic distribution.

“Lee” is the feature directorial debut of Oscar-nominated cinematographer Ellen Kuras, who previously worked with Winslet on “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” The film’s ensemble includes “The Crown” breakout Josh O’Connor, Oscar-nominated “To Leslie” star Andrea Riseborough, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” Andy Samberg, “Big Little Lies” star Alexander Skarsgård, and Oscar-winning “La Vie en Rose” star Marion Cotillard. Roadside Attractions and Vertical have acquired U.S. distribution rights to “Lee,” the war biopic starring Kate Winslet as influential WWII photographer Lee Miller.

Former president Barack Obama released his annual list of favorite films of the year. In the top slots are “Rustin,” “Leave the World Behind” and “American Symphony,” which were all produced by his and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Media.
“I’m biased since these movies were produced by Higher Ground, but these are in fact three of the best films I saw this year,” Obama wrote.
Lower on the list are “The Holdovers,” “Blackberry,” “Oppenheimer,” “American Fiction,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Monster,” “Past Lives,” “Air,” “Polite Society” and “A Thousand and One.”

There’s no shortage of movies to stream on Netflix. Any subscriber that logs onto the platform these days will likely see a bunch of new releases, gruesome horror films, and sweet rom-coms. But with so many big, flashy studio films and Netflix originals to choose from, it can be difficult for the indie films that flood the streamer to stand out.
For sure, a place in Netflix’s library can be a great opportunity for independent cinema to find an audience it otherwise wouldn’t reach in theaters or on television. But for all the big starry auteur films that Netflix picks up and turns into major awards contenders (see “Marriage Story” or “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”), there’s an under-the-radar, overlooked pick that doesn’t have the names or prestige attached to it, and feels destined to serve as mere library filler as people look for the films they do know.

Exclusive: Blue Fox Entertainment announced it has acquired worldwide rights and will be launching sales on the sci-fi thriller Site at the upcoming American Film Market in November. The gripping and thought-provoking film is written and directed by the award-winning Jason Eric Perlman, who was recently named #4 in LA Weekly’s “Top 10 Entertainment Professionals to Watch in 2023.” His debut feature Threshold was released by Sony Pictures after a decorated festival run in 2017.
Blue Fox Entertainment is handling worldwide sales and will preview first look footage of the film for buyers at the upcoming American Film Market (AFM). Blue Fox Entertainment’s US distribution division is planning a theatrical release for the film.
The film stars Jake McLaughlin, Arielle Kebbel, Theo Rossi, and Miki Ishikawa, and Yoson An.
In Site, Neil (Jake McLaughlin) experiences an inexplicable time distortion in an abandoned military test site while inspecting it with his business partner Garrison (Theo Rossi). Soon, Neil is having repeated traumatic flashes back to a WWII prison camp in China called Unit 731, which somehow holds the thread to his own unraveling present. Neil begins to realize that the past lives and events in this place of unspeakable brutality seem to mirror his own trauma with his son Wiley and his wife Elena (Arielle Kebbel). Desperate for answers, Neil enlists Naomi (Miki Ishikawa) to help him find the facility’s last surviving scientist. Ultimately, Neil awakens to a new redemptive responsibility, both within his own family and the greater society around him.
Site is produced by publicist and entrepreneur Benjamin Cooke, Sundance alum, Kelly Hayes, international businesswoman, Yvonne Supangkat, and Jason Eric Perlman.
Blue Fox Entertainment’s James Huntsman said, “Audiences are hungry for high quality science fiction thrillers, which have been scarce in the market recently. With Site, Jason and his talented cast and crew have created an exciting journey that has something relevant to say beneath the surface of the film.”
Director Jason Eric Perlman said, “We are thrilled to have this film beginning its journey in the viewing world. In this time of such unthinkable conflicts I believe it’s vital that creativity explores the interconnectedness of mankind, as well as the atrocities we are capable of inflicting upon one another. Site is intent upon doing both, but with the philosophical imperative that if we ignore history, or the darkness within each of us, we are doomed to repeat the same traumas over and over.
It has been an honor to work with our incredibly talented cast in bringing this story to life, and their commitment to the material elevates it to a remarkable plane. Our visionary crew is also to be credited with what I believe we’ve achieved. The cinematography of Eunah Lee and the brilliant production design of Gabor Norman were integral in the telling of this story to full potential. We are excited to team now with Blue Fox in launching this film into the world.”...

Sometimes, when you’re looking to be entertained, only a thriller will cut it. If you ever find yourself feeling like life is getting inexplicably dark, and morality is becoming more ambiguous, immersing yourself in a tense world of serial killers, terrorists, and crooked sleazebags of all kinds is a pretty great form of escapism. The genre is broad enough to encompass a wide variety of tropes, so you could probably watch thrillers forever and never get bored.
Netflix’s thriller offerings are surprisingly well-rounded, offering a good mix of undisputed classics from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Greengrass as well as newer indie flicks that you may have missed. Whether you’re looking to revisit an old favorite, fill an embarrassing gap in your movie knowledge, or find something new and cutting-edge that will blow your mind, the genre always has something for you. The lessons learned in this pitch-black German-Bulgarian co-production are very grim indeed, a social-realist drama that takes an unexpectedly shocking turn at its harrowing climax. The film’s recent win at Karlovy Vary, where it took the Grand Prix in the Crystal Globe Competition, should give it a welcome boost on the arthouse circuit, but the unwary are warned that Stephan Komandarev’s latest feature packs a punch not seen since Lars von Trier or Michael Haneke in their provocative prime.
Blaga (Eli Skorcheva) is a widow, grieving after the recent death of her beloved husband Hristo, a former policeman. After saving up, she plans to buy a plot of land to bury him in, 40 days after his passing, with a custom-made double gravestone for them both. Hristo “believed in Lenin more than Jesus,” but Blaga’s desire to substitute a cross for a red star is expressly forbidden in Bulgarian law.

Aubrey Plaza, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is a top young actress and producer who is enjoying the biggest year of her career — indeed, in late 2022, she starred in and produced John Patton Ford’s acclaimed indie film Emily the Criminal and gave a standout supporting turn on the second season of Mike White’s popular HBO drama series The White Lotus; and in early 2023, she hosted Saturday Night Live, garnering widespread praise.
Since bursting onto the scene about 15 years ago in comedies on screens big and small — most notably on the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, on which she played the key supporting part of April Ludgate, an apathetic intern, for seven seasons spanning 2009 through 2015 — Plaza has, in the words of the New York Times, “continually reinvented herself,” and, per the Los Angeles Times, “emerged as a performer of surprising depth and range,...

Legendary Entertainment is teaming up with Ryan Reynolds' production company Maximum Effort for the live-action/CGI-hybrid effort "Animal Friends." Who are these animal friends? What form will this combination of live-action and animation take? Well, that's all being kept under wraps for now, with the project remaining somewhat of a mystery beyond cast and crew announcements.
As Deadline reports, Reynolds is set to star in the upcoming movie, alongside Jason Momoa, Vince Vaughn, and Aubrey Plaza. "Animal Friends" will be helmed by Emmy-winning director Peter Atencio, who also directed Legendary's "The Machine" — a big screen adaptation of comedian Bert Kreischer's infamous summer spent abroad in Russia, where he somehow managed to befriend the mafia.
Aside from "Animal Friends" being described as an "R-rated road trip adventure," there's very little else in the way of plot details known at this time. We do know the script has been penned by...

I’ve got to tell you, Emily the Criminal was the film that gave me the biggest rush all year; it was never going to compete in this category — it’s too small — but it deserved to. I hated the one that’s going to win, Everything Everywhere All at Once. I’ve had many friends say “It’s a stoner movie!” Well, I’m a stoner, and I couldn’t enjoy it. I had to start it four times; the fourth time, I finally made it through the whole thing.

I recall researching filmmaker John Patton Ford for our Sundance predictions just prior to him launching Emily the Criminal (Best First Screenplay – Independent Spirit Awards) to put it simply he is a feel-good story of someone who tasted the promise of a break-out career to wait his turn only two decades later. Deadline reports that he is now tapped to make his sophomore feature – teaming with StudioCanal and Blueprint Pictures’ Graham Broadbent and Peter Czernin for what is coined as a “satirical thriller.”…...

Another Sons of Anarchy spinoff may be closer than ever, as actor Theo Rossi–who played “Juice” Ortiz on the FX series–said there very well could be something revving its engine.
Speaking with Deadline, Theo Rossi said of a potential Sons of Anarchy spinoff, “There might be something coming up where we’re all back together, which is insane…If it happens, it’s wild, but if it doesn’t, it would be perfect and really cool because we also talk every day.” He added, “It’s totally different. It’s really cool.” Whether this would be another show or a potential movie remains unknown, but it wouldn’t be the first spinoff. Mayans Mc premiered in 2018, less than four years after Sons of Anarchy concluded.

The host of the 2023 Spirit Awards, Hasan Minhaj, suggested in his monologue that Cate Blanchett was the one to beat at this year’s awards.
But instead, Blanchett and her film Tár nearly went home empty-handed, only winning one of the seven awards for which it was nominated. The Focus film won in the best cinematography category but lost in the other categories in which it was nominated.
Tár wasn’t the only movie with multiple Spirit Awards nominations to fail to win, as Everything Everywhere All at Once’s dominance meant that the following films, all of which were up for several awards, were also shut out: Four-time nominee Palm Trees and Power Lines and three-time nominees Bones and All, starring Timothée Chalamet; The Inspection; and Murina.
Women Talking also lost all of the competitive awards for which it was nominated, three, only accepting the previously-announced prize of the Robert Altman Award,...

This article contains spoilers for "Sons of Anarchy."
Once you've done "Hamlet" on motorcycles, what's next, "Macbeth" on dirtbikes? Apparently, someone who worked on "Sons of Anarchy" may have a new idea, at least according to series star Theo Rossi (as reported by Deadline). Rossi alluded to a potential Samcro reunion at a panel discussion for the movie "Emily The Criminal" in Los Angeles this weekend, calling a potential future project involving the "Sons of Anarchy" cast "totally different" and "really cool."
Rossi didn't specify whether the project in question is a movie, show, or something else entirely. In fact, he didn't actually state if it would be related to the seven-season FX biker drama at all, but did say it would reunite the "Sons of Anarchy" cast. "There might be something coming up where we're all back together, which is insane," Rossi explained. Although Deadline's original post no longer makes mention of it,...

She continued: “I want to dedicate this to all our mothers. Without our mothers, none of us would be here. And to all the ladies [who] are sitting at that table who support their husbands,” she said, of the Everything Everywhere All at Once cast and crew. “Thank you all for believing in us, and giving us a seat at the table and [thank you to] all the little girls, boys, who look like us and think that it is possible.”

The blue carpet has been rolled up, and now we know who are the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards winners. The list of nominees recognized the best among films made for under $30 million in 2023 — that’s an increase from the previous budget cap, in recognition of ever-increasing production costs.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” earned pretty much a clean sweep: winning all seven of the categories in which it was nominated, including Best Feature, and seven of its eight nominees winning overall — Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis were competing against each other in one category, Supporting Performance, with the former winning.
