The third-season premiere of Only Murders in the Building pushed the comedy to its best showing yet on the streaming charts. Suits continued its dominant summer, setting a record for the most consecutive weeks with more than 3 billion minutes of viewing time.
Only Murders in the Building opened its third season on Hulu on Aug. 8, and it drew 719 million minutes of watch time for the week of Aug. 7-13. That’s a series high for the show and 24 percent higher than its previous best, 578 million minutes for the week of its season two finale in August 2022. It finished third among original series and ninth overall in Nielsen’s rankings.
Suits extended its remarkable summer with 3.01 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, becoming the first show in the three-year history of Nielsen’s weekly charts to record 3 billion or more minutes in seven consecutive weeks. Previous smashes Stranger Things...

Now, this is a couple worth obsessing over…
Todd Haynes’ tenth feature film, “May December,” reunites the director with his longtime collaborator and star Julianne Moore, who leads the film as former teacher Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who tumbled into the public eye when she wed husband Joe Yoo (played in his later years by Charles Melton) after a salacious, tabloid-gripping romance starting when he was just 13. Natalie Portman plays an actress who is tasked with portraying Gracie in an upcoming biopic about the shocking story.
Per the film’s official synopsis, “May December” is set “twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, [as] a married couple (Julianne Moore and Charles Melton) buckles under the pressure when an actress (Natalie Portman) arrives to do research for a film about their past.” When Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman) comes to spend time with the family, which also includes Gracie and Joe’s teenaged twins,...

For more than three decades now, Harlan Coben has held readers captive with his mystery and thriller novels — twisty tales of suburban families undone by long-buried family secrets, mysterious disappearances, suspicious reappearances, and threats from strangers who know too much. And lately, Coben has been expanding his empire to television, both with series he created for the medium — e.g. Safe and The Five — and those adapted from his novels for markets around the world. In 2018, Coben signed a multi-million-dollar, five-year deal with Netflix to turn 14 of his books into movies and TV shows for the streaming platform. He and Netflix extended the deal last year, adding four more years and a dozen more titles to the original agreement, according to Deadline. And now, Coben has a new show on Prime Video, Shelter (episodes drop Fridays through September 22), in which Jaden Michael, Adrian Greensmith, and Abby Corrigan play teens investigating...

Jason Statham is a franchise unto himself. He tends to more or less play the same growly-voiced butt-kicking macho man over and over with superficial differences, like how his titular super-spy in "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" enjoys a fine wine. Or how his personal driver, Frank Martin, in "The Transporter" films is meticulous about keeping his suits clean and neatly pressed. You always know exactly what to expect from his films and there's a comfort in that. They embody the type of "Action Movies Your Dad Watches" that were the bread and butter of networks like TNT and TBS in the pre-streaming age of cable.

It’s not unusual for films to see a boost when they shift from PVOD rental to Est. But “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony), which had dropped off the top 10 charts after several weeks of rental success, came back as #1 on all three now that it’s available to buy at $19.99.
“Barbie” has surpassed the Marvel animated title as #1 for the summer, but the renewed interest in “Spider-Verse” is a good reminder of how strong the brand can be.
In another sign of how comic book movies elevate those associated with them, “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot’s Netflix action title “Heart of Stone” hit #1 right away at the streamer. It received a lot of review attention, mostly negative. Its value will be better determined depending on if it sustains a lengthy run high on their charts.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Wednesday that the state will be issuing new guidelines for reopening businesses in the state.
“We’re working with local health officers all up and down the state,” said Newsom. “We’re working on new criteria, more prescriptive criteria, more dynamic criteria, as it relates to our health order statewide, as it relates to reopening business sectors in the state.”
“We’ve been working on drafts back and forth with local officials,” revealed the governor, “in a spirit of collaboration.”
While Newsom was careful not to reveal the exact direction of the guidelines — whether looser or more strict — He said they would be made “With…an understanding that we have today based on what we’ve seen around the world, around the rest of the state and our own experiences going back a number of months.”
The governor revealed that watch periods may vary from sector to sector.

International television execs are jetting home today after a spending a week in the South of France at the Mip TV and Canneseries events.
The wet and windy weather compounded a slightly low-key feel at the events with Reed Midem announcing that 10,000 people were in attendance. This official number is down on the 11,000 that arrived in 2016 and 11,500 people that attended last year and seems high given that the Croisette was rather quiet during the week, not helped by French air and rail strikes.
However, there were a plethora of deals announced at the market, with the biggest talking point in the bunkers and bars was the suggestion, broken by Deadline, that Endemol Shine Group could be sold with ITV and others starting to consider another TV mega-merger.
Endemol Shine itself was responsible for possibly the noisiest format in Cannes, German physical gameshow Big Bounce Battle, which was attracting interest from across a number of markets.

Cannes — MipTV closed Thursday its quietest edition in years, wracked by French air and rail strikes, dreary weather and most important market change and larger competition from February’s BBC Showcase and May’s L.A. Screenings.
2018 MipTV attendance came in around 10,000, said Laurine Garaude, director of Reed Midem’s Television Division, which organizes the content trade fair. That compares to official estimates of 11,000 for 2016 and 10,500 for 2017. Some “hundreds” of participants were no-shows because of the strikes, addedJerome Delhaye, Reed Midem director of the entertainment division.
In a bigger picture, however, as broadcast networks restructure as content creator-owners, not passive broadcasters of acquired product, MipTV is having to reinvent itself, launching “major strategic developments,” said Garaude, Its traditional role as a sales market less required, it is becoming ever more a production forum.

When you walk past a rack of books in an airport, you’re likely to see a few by Harlan Coben. There’s a reason his books are popular, even among those not about to board a long flight. Like his new TV thriller “Safe,” they are efficient suspense delivery systems, and any deficiencies in character development are usually overshadowed by the satisfying tick-tock nature of the plot and the interlocking mysteries threatening upscale people who find themselves spiraling into trouble.
“Safe,” Coben’s second foray into TV after the U.K. series “The Five,” has a mostly British cast, and takes place in a luxury gated community in the English suburbs. At the center of this drama, however, is Michael C. Hall, an American actor who speaks here with a British accent. Michael C. Hall plays a Brit in his new series “Safe” and relishes the challenge. “As an American actor, I often see people from the U.K. or Australia or anywhere else come and play Americans and that’s perfectly acceptable, but I like the idea of turning the tables,” he told Variety from Cannes.
Eight-part drama “Safe” will play on Netflix internationally and on Canal+’s C8 channel in France. Hall plays Tom, a pediatric surgeon who is raising his two teenage daughters Jenny and Carrie alone after the death of his wife. When Jenny sneaks out and goes to a party, a series of events unfolds and leads to a murder, a disappearance and the emergence of buried secrets.
The show also stars Amanda Abingdon (“Sherlock”) and Emmett J. Scanlan (“The Fall”). It is the latest TV project from bestselling author Harlan Coben, who is also in Cannes,...

Y Tu Mama Tambien director Gael García Bernal, Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller Bridge, Dexter’s Michael C Hall and The Wire’s Michael Kenneth Williams are all set to walk the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals in Cannes this week. However, instead of the film festival’s famous red carpet, the group will be strolling down a pink carpet for the launch of TV festival Canneseries.
The event, which takes place alongside Mip TV from April 4 – 11, is the brainchild of Cannes mayor David Lisnard, who wanted to replicate the success of the city’s film festival with an event celebrating the small screen. It is run by former French Culture Minister Fleur Pellerin and former TF1 executive Benoît Louvet, who is managing director.

We sat down with the former stuntman to talk about how he creates such beautiful carnage in John Wick Chapter 2, as well as grabbing updates on the future of the John Wick franchise and his upcoming Highlander remake.
Why John Wick 2? Why’ve you made a second one?
There’s all the fiduciary reasons for the studio. For me, on a personal level, we were very fortunate. The first movie did really well. My partner Dave (Leicht), and I got a lot of other offers to do projects and step into other people’s shoes and do other sequels.

Since his debut in Guy Ritchie’s 1998 film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, actor Jason Statham has emerged in the past few years as one of the leading action heroes currently working, with his popularity being proven by the fact that the Transporter series, which he headlined for the first three films, has gone on to a tv show adaptation and will be rebooted in theatres next weekend with The Transporter Refueled. That’s not the only action franchise Statham has headlined, however, as he has also been the leading man in the Crank films and been a part of the Expendables franchise and, more recently, the Fast and Furious franchise.
Action heroes often have to throw lots of punches onscreen, and Statham has been no exception in this regard. Now the youtube channel Burger Fiction has put together a compilation of the numerous punches Statham has thrown onscreen...

American Sniper meets Lassie? We take a look at Max, which has quietly slipped into UK cinemas...
It feels like the dog movie might have had its day. Although we still get a few films every now and then where a canine performer plays a pivotal character, this once-booming genre bracket is largely reserved for the booming direct-to-video market- Disney's Air Buddies spin-off franchise is going strong and as of 2014, the Beethoven saga is up to its eighth instalment (and its fifth to skip cinemas.)
The unusual logline for Max appears to be 'American Sniper meets Lassie', but it's not without charm. With staggering earnestness, it plays out the tale of a Belgian Malinois called Max, (played by Carlos) whose Us Marine handler Kyle (Robbie Amell) is killed in action while apprehending a suicide bomber during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Sent stateside, the only human he seems willing to connect with is Kyle’s teenage brother, Justin, so Max is saved when he is adopted by Kyle’s family. But Justin has issues of his own, including living up to his father’s expectations,...

He’s got the deadliest skills and the maddest stare but has Jason Statham got the chops for comedy? As his new film Spy opens, Britain’s toughest export talks about keeping a straight face, doing his own stunts and having 007 in his sights
Related: Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig on Spy: 'When it works, it works like jazz'
“If someone wants me to jump off this balcony,” says Jason Statham, nodding to the window behind him, “and land on a crash pad, that’s a piece of cake for me.” We’re only on the first floor of a Mayfair hotel, but it’s still quite a drop. This isn’t Statham boasting – it’s more a casual aside – but we both know he’s not joking, either. I’m tempted to challenge him to do it without the crash pad, though there’s the possibility he’d...

The mighty Statham comes home to Den Of Geek, to chat Spy, Crank 3, Fast & Furious 8 and more...
This site's devotion to the mighty Statham has been ongoing for many years, yet for the man himself, 2015 is proving a vintage twelve months. Fast & Furious 7, his last film, is currently sitting as the fourth biggest of all time, and his next, Spy, is already picking up box office gold around the world.
Here, we spent some time with The Statham, where we talked comedy, Crank, and Crank 3...
Go back through your films, and there's no shortage of comedy in them. The Crank films in particular. Yet Spy sees you in your first outright comedy role. There's nothing ironic about it, either: a straight character, with loads of funny moments. How was it pitched to you, and why pick this one? You must have been offered comedy before.
Yeah, as you know,...

"Animals can come down with post-traumatic stress the same as people can." If for some reason you thought American Sniper would be better with a dog than Bradley Cooper, we have some good news. Max is just that, as the film from Remember the Titans director Boaz Yakin follows a dog who has just returned from being a military canine in Afghanistan, but has trouble adjusting to life back in a family's home. It's literally the same kind of war drama we've seen before, but through the eyes of man's best friend. It has some flares of E.T. and Air Bud along with the typical Ptsd drama, but it does look pretty cheesy. Watch? Here's the first official trailer for Boaz Yakin's Max, originally from Yahoo: Max is directed by Boaz Yakin (Safe, Remember the Titans) from a script he wrote with Sheldon Lettich (Double Impact, Bloodsport). The story...

30. Sense and Sensibility
Directed by: Ang Lee
Ang Lee has gone in about eight different directions in terms of genre. His resume includes “The Ice Storm,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” Hulk,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Life of Pi,” and this delightful Jane Austen adaptation, starring Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman, and young Kate Winslet. “Sense and Sensibility” took home the Oscar for Adapted Screenplay for the story of the Dashwood family, a mother widowed and left in difficult circumstances after her husband has left his fortune to his first wife, instead of his current one. So Mrs. Dashwood (Gemma Jones) and her daughters Fanny, Marianne, and Elinor (Harriet Walter, Winslet, Thompson) have to find a way to survive in a world ruled by men and the rules that seem to create obstacle after obstacle for them. Unfortunately, given the era, they are viewed as “unmarryable,” since they have no fortune and no prospects.

The Digital Era: Real-time Films From 2000 To Today
40 years before, in 1960, lighter cameras enabled a cinéma vérité-flavored revolution in street realism. By 2000, new digital cameras suggested a whole new set of promises, including telling stories that would have been unimaginable within minimum budgets for features even ten years before. In 2000, film purists warned that digital still didn’t look as good as celluloid, but that didn’t stop at least three innovative filmmakers from boldly going where no filmmaker had gone before. Mike Figgis’ Timecode (2000) was the first star-supported (Salma Hayek, Stellan Skarsgard, Holly Hunter, among many others) single-shot project since Rope, underlining that earlier film’s timelessness. If Run Lola Run could do one story three times, then Timecode would do three or four stories one time: the movie is four separate ninety-minute shots shown all at the same time, each in one quadrant of the screen. Where do you look?...

Austin - When the lights went down in the theater for the Fantastic Fest debut of "John Wick," I had no expectations at all for the film. It never occurred to me that it would end up being one of the most enjoyable things I saw there and a genuinely exciting announcement for a pair of pulp action filmmakers. Chad Stahelski was the stuntman who doubled for Keanu Reeves on "The Matrix," and since then, he's done "The Replacements," both "Matrix" sequels, "Thumbsucker," "Constantine," and "Man Of Tai Chi" with Reeves, and they've developed a strong collaborative relationship. David Leitch, who co-directed the film with Stahelski, has worked on dozens of movies with him in the stunt department. They've both worked as second-unit actual unit directors on films like "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," "Escape Plan," "Safe," "The Wolverine," Parker," "Ninja Assassin," and the upcoming "Jurassic World." The two of...

Jackie Earle Haley, the last actor to wear and use Freddy Krueger’s iconic finger knives on screen, highlights the list of notable performers who will voice characters in Bethesda’s upcoming survival horror title, The Evil Within. Haley, who also played Rorschach in Hollywood’s adaptation of The Watchmen, has been outed as the game’s main villain, Ruvik. His opponent, Detective Sebastian Castellanos, will be portrayed by Anson Mount of Hell on Wheels fame.
Dexter fans will also be happy to hear that Jennifer Carpenter — who is most famous for her role as the serial killer’s sister, Debra Morgan — will appear in the game as Detective Castellanos’ partner, Juli Kidman. She rounds out an impressive cast that will lend an air of credibility to the brand new IP.
Released alongside this news is a trailer that mixes gruesome gameplay footage with shots of the aforementioned actors doing their thing.

How do you rank perfection? Duncan has a go, as he lists the top 25 Jason Statham films...
For regular Den Of Geek readers, it will come as little surprise to see this list come round. We've chosen our favourite Statham films before, but such is the productivity of the great man, it was decided that a mere top ten was no longer large enough to contain his ever growing body of work. Last time I mentioned updating this piece to the man himself back in 2012 due to his insane workload, he cracked up and responded, “My productivity is overwhelming! 'Have a fucking day off!'”
Since this list has now expanded to encompass 25 of his movies, it seemed only right to include multiple sequels, with his big trio of action franchises all spawning some thoroughly entertaining fare worthy of mention, though I’ve tried to exclude the personal bias that...

I didn't quite know how to describe the genre I'm referring to with this post (BoxOfficeMojo doesn't even have a category for it), but suffice to say I'm particularly targeting the films made popular by the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone back in the '80s and more recently it seems Jason Statham had a lock down on things. Now, however, it only seems Liam Neeson can really generate any box-office juice with his cinematic fisticuffs, otherwise it has to be an ensemble or nothing. I ask because ever since Schwarzenegger made his way back to movies after playing Governor for eight years, he's seen The Last Stand, Escape Plan and this past weekend's Sabotage tank at the box office. Similarly, Stallone has seen Bullet to the Head, Escape Plan and Grudge Match bomb at the box office and Statham has seen a string of non-starters including Killer Elite,...

Pushing The Hunger Games: Catching Fire aside after its two weeks at the top spot, Disney's Frozen opened with £4.70m. That's by no means the top number for an animation this year – Despicable Me 2 debut gathered £14.82m, including £4.87m in previews in June – but it's a solid start for a film presumed to play to the Christmas audience. Family films targeting the Christmas market have a knack of playing strongly right through until Christmas Eve, and if the festive association is not too strong can, continue to play beyond that date.

Though there are a few exceptions here and there, a film headlined by Jason Statham usually falls into one of two categories; generic but entertaining actioner or generic and too lax to ignore actioner. Directed by Gary Fleder, Homefront offers up just enough satisfying fun to reside in the former group, taking its place alongside Parker and Safe as one of the Stath’s better offerings in recent times.
Penned by Sylvester Stallone – who was set to star in the lead role before he got old(er) – Homefront centres on widowed ex-dea agent Phil Broker (Statham), who has left the undercover life behind for a decidedly quieter one with his 10-year-old daughter Maddy (Izabela Vidovic). The Hunger Games: Catching Fire added an estimated $75m (£46m) in its second weekend and – having reached $297m (£181m) – will cross the $300m threshold on Monday. The Thanksgiving holiday period was catnip for Katniss and the gang, who have now notched up $573m (£349m) worldwide including $276m ($168m) from the international arena. What a result for Lionsgate, the "seventh studio" behind the established Us majors, and one that has proved to be stunningly adept at finding franchises. (It owns the Twilight films, which still quiver and hum with the memory of their commercial might.) Catching Fire will soar past $600m (£366m) worldwide by Tuesday, and at this rate should finish on at least $800m (£488m). Just time to catch our breath before the third film,...

Jason Statham teams up with another badass little girl… which makes him almost warm and charming as he kicks the crap out of villains. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): have not been the biggest Jason Statham fan
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Hey! Jason Statham finally found a thing that works! Well, okay, a thing that finally works for me. Lots of folks seem just fine with the badass martial-arts machine he typically portrays… if that’s even the word for simply transferring his stuntman workouts to the big screen. For me, that’s so completely uninteresting, and so very cold, and I was starting to wonder if he had anything else to offer.
But he’s trying. With a decent script — not that this wholly qualifies, but more on that in a moment — he’s got something. With the right costar,...

Amir here, bringing you Thanksgiving weekend’s box office report.
It’s a testament to the popularity and success of The Hunger Games series that Frozen, in its own right a breaker of multiple records this weekend, could not displace it as the number one film. Catching Fire has banked almost $300m in just ten days, leaving virtually no doubt that it will trump Iron Man 3 as the best selling film of the year. One can only imagine how much a Katniss vs. Tony Stark mash-up film would sell, though I struggle to think of any way in which Jennifer Lawrence is not superior to Robert Downey Jr. at the moment. Frozen, meanwhile, is now firmly positioned as the frontrunner for the animated film Oscar, what with positive reviews, strong word of mouth and incredible sales that guarantee every voter will be tempted to pop this screener in.

It was feast or famine at the box office over the long Thanksgiving weekend. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Frozen obliterated a handful of records, and combined for over $200 million for the five-day frame. The rest of the market didn't fare so well, though: in particular, new releases Homefront, Black Nativity and Oldboy failed to find an audience. After opening to over $158 million last weekend, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire held well over the Thanksgiving holiday. For the three-day weekend, the movie took first place with $74.2 million; among all second weekends, that ranks fourth behind The Avengers, Avatar and The Dark Knight. With $109.9 million from Wednesday to Sunday, the blockbuster sequel also destroyed the five-day Thanksgiving weekend record held for the past 12 years by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ($82.4 million).Through its first 10 days, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has earned a massive $296.3 million. It's now virtually guaranteed to finish with over $400 million,...

Two movies with female leads are poised to dominate the box office over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire should easily repeat in first place, and could set a new Thanksgiving record. Meanwhile, Disney Animation's Frozen is also looking at a strong start, though it probably won't match similar movie Tangled.Catching Fire is coming off an enormous $158.1 million weekend, and is receiving strong word-of-mouth (an "A" CinemaScore). The current all-time record for the five-day Thanksgiving weekend (Wednesday to Sunday) is $82.4 million, set back in 2001 by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Based on Catching Fire's mid-week performance so far, it's likely that it sets a new record with at least $85 million.Expanding to 3,742 locations after a successful exclusive run at Disney's El Capitan theater, Frozen is the latest movie from the resurgent Disney Animation Studios. The animation department scored a big hit in 2010 with Tangled ($200.8 million...
