The Beach Boys‘ songs were great, but they didn’t have a tremendous amount of influence on mainstream music like The Beatles had. Very few mainstream groups could be classified as Beach Boys wannabes. Despite this, one band crafted a hit Beach Boys homage so good that it’s easy to mistake it for the real thing.
The Beach Boys clearly inspired a 1970s song
The Beach Boys ruled the 1960s but the 1970s were much harder on them. Aside from a bad cover of Chuck Berry’s “Rock and Roll Music,” they didn’t have much of a commercial impact. Some fans say that’s because the quality of popular music took a radical downward shift in the 1970s, so much so that the radio had no room for new Beach Boys songs. Others would say The Beach Boys’ 1970s output wasn’t good or commercial enough for the pop charts.

There’s a moment in The Beach Boys, the new documentary about the pioneers of California pop music streaming now on Disney+, in which rock historian and USC professor Josh Kun raises a question that has haunted the band throughout the bulk of its career: “Who are we as artists?”
In the beginning, the core Beach Boys — brothers Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson, and Carl Wilson, cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine — were a vocal group selling a fantasy about Southern California culture, one where the sun always shined, the girls all wore bikinis,...

The Beach Boys are back.
The seminal American band, responsible for such tunes classics as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Good Vibrations,” originally consisting of brother Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, are getting the feature-length rock doc treatment. And with good reason – the story of The Beach Boys, a band known for their sunny disposition, is fraught with tragedy, disloyalty and acrimony. But all of that pain went into their music, creating something simultaneously euphoric and melancholy. And it will all make for a very juicy documentary – just in time for summer!
When does “The Beach Boys” come out?
“The Beach Boys” premiered Friday, May 24. Just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off to summer.
Is “The Beach Boys” streaming or in theaters?
“The Beach Boys” is streaming exclusively on Disney+.

Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson was placed in a court-ordered conservatorship Thursday that will be run by his longtime publicist and manager, Jean Sievers, and his longtime business manager, LeeAnn Hard. The reps revealed in a petition filed last February that Wilson is suffering from dementia at the age of 81.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Gus T. May granted the petition after finding that Wilson is living with a “major neurocognitive disorder” and needs the assistance as the least restrictive way to address his needs. The judge also added...

The Beach Boys and The Monkees will forever be remembered as two of the best pop bands ever — even if they constantly get compared to The Beatles. During their peak era, The Beach Boys and The Monkees had the same number of chart-topping singles. One band managed to have another chart-topper years later.
The Beach Boys and The Monkees both evolved from bubblegum to psychedelia
The Beach Boys did very well for themselves in the 1960s. The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits says they had three No. 1 singles during that decade. They were “I Get Around,” “Help Me, Rhonda,” and “Good Vibrations.” Those songs encapsulate the band’s pea period pretty well. The first two show off the band’s bubblegum/doo-wop side, while “Good Vibrations” is one of their prime psychedelic experimentations.
During the same decade, The Monkees also had three No. 1 hits. They were “Last Train to Clarksville,...

Drake Bell was as much of an icon to 2000s kids as John Lennon was to the children of the 1960s. During an interview, the Drake & Josh star explained why he had a tattoo inspired by one of John’s most famous quotations. The quotation appeared in one of the former Beatle’s most enduring songs.

“My heart is broken,” Wilson wrote. “Our five children and I are just in tears. We are lost. Melinda was more than my wife. She was my savior. She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career.” He added in a subsequent post: “She was my anchor. She was everything for us.”
She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart. She was my anchor. She was everything for us. Please say a prayer for her.

In The Old Oak, an English man and a Syrian woman become unlikely friends on one side of a simmering culture war. It’s the latest from Ken Loach and, if reports are true, it will be the 86-year-old director’s last. The Old Oak is, of course, a timely story about modern Britain, immigration, and xenophobia. It’s also a parting statement from Loach––one last rallying cry for solidarity––and a fitting coda to his six-decade long career.
It’s hard to imagine that Loach first made his name in 1964: viewers who watched Cathy Come Home on the BBC that week could have seen “Good Vibrations” go to number 1 on Top of The Pops. Seen by a quarter of the population, it in fact did change British attitudes towards homelessness. Brian Wilson and Bob Dylan are two musical pioneers of the 1960s. While Dylan had a solo musical path, Wilson was a founding member of The Beach Boys. Both revolutionized American rock n’ roll in various ways, including songwriting and sound. However, the two artists never met each other until a chance encounter at an emergency room.

The 1960s was the peak of many trends in classic rock. For example, ’60s psychedelic rock songs are probably better than the psychedelic rock songs of any other era. Notably, John Lennon said The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever” wasn’t very psychedelic at first.

“Strawberry Fields Forever” might be the defining psychedelic rock song of the ’60s. In a 1980 interview from the book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, John discussed its origin.
“Dick Lester offered me the part in this movie [How I Won the War], which gave me time to think without going home,” he recalled. “We were in Almería, and it took me six weeks to write the song. I was writing it all the time I was making the film. And as anybody knows about film work, there’s a lot of hanging around.

This four-part Netflix series isn’t the first time that Josephine Hart’s 1991 novel Damage has been adapted for screen. In 1992, celebrated French director Louis Malle made a feature film of Hart’s book that welcomed Jeremy Irons, Juliette Binoche, Miranda Richardson, Peter Stomare and Rupert Graves to this exploration of erotic obsession. The film earned Richardson a Best Actress nomination among many others at that year’s Academy Awards.
This serialised version was created by playwright Morgan Lloyd Malcolm with writer Benji Walters, and directed by Ordinary Love, Good Vibrations and Cherry Bomb‘s Lisa Barrow D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn, updates the action to the modern day and remoulds the characters somewhat. Richard Armitage plays successful surgeon Will, husband to Ingrid and father to Jay and Sally, while Charlie Muphy’s character Anna Barton is expanded to explore her response to the fallout of the story’s scandalous central affair.

CBS celebrated the career of one of the greatest bands of all time with a three-hour celebration of the Beach Boys that saw tribute performances from a range of artists such as Fall Out Boy, Weezer, Charlie Puth, Little Big Town, Michael McDonald, Brandi Carlile, and more. Just like previous Grammy salutes to Paul Simon, The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder, the A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys special featured contemporary artists recreating some of the honorees’ most famous tracks. The show saw several different genre artists come together to celebrate the timeless classics of the Beach Boys, with songs like “Good Vibrations,” “God Only Knows,” and ” Wouldn’t It Be Nice” being showcased to commemorate their influence on pop culture. Attended by band members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks, these are the top 7 performances from CBS’ A Grammy Salute to the Beach Boys.

Before she was the “Queen of Country Pop,” Shania Twain was a fan of the Hollies, hearing “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother” at about 4 years old (and still remembering it today). In her memoir From This Moment On, the artist mentioned some of her favorite songs growing up.

The “Giddy Up” artist has several hits of her own. Still, Twain has specific memories of impactful childhood songs. That includes one hit by The Hollies, as noted in her autobiography.
“I couldn’t have been more than four years old when ‘He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,’ a big harmony-laden hit by the Hollies, came on the radio,” Twain wrote in From This Moment On.

Ringo Starr rarely hesitates to call it like he sees it, even if he’s the target. Yusuf / Cat Stevens cut his drumming from an album, and his reaction to the slight was pure class. So when Ringo complimented Brian Wilson’s work ethic, it was massive praise from The Beatles drummer to the Beach Boys frontman.

Ringo’s excessive drinking was such a problem in the mid-1980s that he played a concert with the Beach Boys and has no memory of it. The Beach Boys are one of the most beloved rock acts of all time, with songs and albums popular today. The band even still tours, but not with its original lineup. In 2012, they attempted to bring some of the founding members back, which ended in controversy for the Beach Boys.

Mark Wahlberg wowed his fans with a series of shirtless selfies showing off the actor’s incredible physique.
At 51 years of age, Mark has proven that age is just a number. The actor and former rapper devotes a lot of time to his fitness regime, and it shows.
In a recent share to his Instagram, Mark posed for several mirror selfies as he flexed his awe-inspiring muscles for the camera.
The carousel post’s jaw-dropping shots were taken from Mark’s bedroom, where he stood, shirtless, wearing only a pair of navy blue drawstring shorts. In his first slide, Mark’s ripped muscles stole the show as he posed in a bodybuilder’s “most muscular” pose, showcasing his burly shoulders and ripped abs, reminiscent of his Calvin Klein modeling days in the ’90s.

Bill Pitman, a guitarist whose work as part of the legendary recording session group The Wrecking Crew made an invaluable contribution to countless radio hits, TV series and films, died yesterday at his home in La Quinta, California. He was 102.
His death was announced to The New York Times by wife Janet Pitman, who told the publication her husband died after four weeks of hospice care following a fall that fractured his spine.
Pitman’s guitar playing was ubiquitous, if largely anonymous, for decades beginning in the 1950s. Just a sampling of the songs he played on: The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” Frank Sinatra’s “Strangers in the Night,” Barbra Streisand’s “The Way We Were, The Ronettes’ “Be My Baby” and The Monkees’ “Papa Gene’s Blues.” He played the ukelele on the B.J. It’s hard to go wrong by using a Magnetic Fields song in your film trailer, but the newest melodrama from Bleecker Street has really hit the nail on the head this time. Featuring a suspiciously well placed serenade of “The Book of Love”, the first trailer for “Ordinary Love” promises an elegantly acted tearjerker that will reach right into the depths of your soul and wring out all those wintertime feelings. Following a critically acclaimed premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019, “Ordinary Love” stars Liam Neeson and Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville as a married couple reeling from a breast cancer diagnosis that upends their otherwise, well, ordinary life.
The synopsis out of the film’s Tiff debut reads: “Joan (Manville) and Tom (Neeson) are a long-married couple, with their set habits, cozy bickering, and assumption of a long walk together into the sunset. But when Joan...

"For once in your life, can you be bloody normal?" "I am normal! Very normal." Bleecker Street Films has debuted a brand new Us trailer for an indie cancer drama titled simply Ordinary Love, from directors Lisa Barros D'Sa & Glenn Leyburn (Cherrybomb and Good Vibrations). This premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year to rave reviews and plenty of acclaim for the two lead performances. The short pitch for this is perfect: an extraordinary look at ordinary love. Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville (from Phantom Thread) star as a long-standing couple facing a potentially life-changing cancer diagnosis. We featured a UK trailer last fall, the film is getting a Us release in theaters next month. The very small cast includes David Wilmot, Amit Shah, Esh Alladi, and Geraldine McAlinden. It looks like a remarkably tender, honest, heartbreaking and also heart-filling look at the extraordinary power of love in tough times.

Not everyone is a big fan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s recently released third season, it seems.
Legendary studio musician Carol Kaye, whose life and career serves as a template for Liza Weil’s Maisel character Carole Keene, voiced her displeasure regarding the portrayal in an interview with the New York Post. “A lot of people are saying, ‘That must be you. I love it!’ But I am not a cartoon — and my life is not a joke… Nobody contacted me. I didn’t know a thing about it. I thought that was pretty bad — kind of like slander.

Some viewers might have assumed that Carol Kaye, the legendary studio bassist who was part of the so-called Wrecking Crew in the 1960s, would be flattered by having a character loosely modeled on her, “Carole Keen,” introduced in the latest season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” Noting that the real-life Kaye is now 84, Esquire praised the homage and wrote, “Hopefully she’s binging ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Season Three proudly, along with the rest of us.”
Well, no. Anyone who knows Kaye’s history of taking issue with documentaries that involve her knew that she probably wouldn’t suffer a fictional portrayal any more lightly. And indeed that has turned out to be the case, as Kaye has vented about “Mrs. Maisel” in an interview with the New York Post.

Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson are note-perfect as an everyday couple coping with cancer in this singular drama with universal appeal
There’s nothing ordinary about this deeply moving, frequently funny and piercingly insightful drama from Belfast playwright Owen McCafferty, making his screenwriting feature debut. On the surface it’s a tale of a middle-aged couple facing up to a diagnosis of breast cancer, and a year of medical intervention. Yet beyond this immediate diagnosis is something far more rich and compelling – a story of everyday love between two people living in the shadow of grief, facing an uncertain future, both together and apart.
Directed with wit, subtlety and great emotional honesty by Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn (the co-directors of 2012’s brilliantly life-affirming Good Vibrations), it’s a singular story with universal appeal – striking a very personal chord with some viewers while finding common ground with the widest possible audience.

With civic arts support low on American capitalism’s to-do list, orchestras and composers are canoodling more frequently with rock and pop acts — who of course have their own struggles, wringing pennies from streaming platforms et al. When the outcome isn’t just simpleminded hits-with-strings reheats or half-cooked vanity concertos, it’s a way for living artists to stretch “high culture” into useful new shapes.

There are strong, sensitive performances in a melancholic film about a couple dealing with the fallout from a cancer diagnosis
Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn are the two film-makers who in 2013 directed Good Vibrations, a tremendous film about the 70s Belfast punk scene. Now they have changed the mood for this desperately poignant study of a retired middle-aged couple, Joan and Tom, who have, over the years, come to terms with the deep sadness in their hearts following the death of their daughter. Now their fragile relationship is further tested when Joan is diagnosed with breast cancer. Is it too much to bear? Or has their existing grief somehow partly numbed, or inoculated them against the more commonplace pain of getting cancer in your 60s?

Once upon a time in Hollywood, a songwriter cut some demos. New documentary Manson: Music from an Unsound Mind gives a listen.
"My life is yours, and you can have my world," the Beach Boys sang in the song "Never Learn Not to Love." Mostly written by Charles Manson, that world was a far different kind of hallucination than the band surfed when they were dispensing "Good Vibrations." Credited songwriter Dennis Wilson changed a good portion of the lyrics and wrote a bridge so it could be issued as a B-side and paid the struggling the songwriter. The musical side of the man who killed the sixties will be explored in the upcoming documentary Manson: Music From An Unsound Mind.
The documentary was written and directed by Tom O’Dell. “I first found out about Manson’s musical ambitions back in 2007, while producing a Byrds documentary,” O’Dell said in a statement.

[Editors’ note: The following post contains spoilers for “Us.”]
Most “Us” fans can’t stop talking about or listening to the cover of Luniz’s “I Got 5 on It,” which was featured in the movie’s official trailer and plays an integral role during the film’s climax, but that’s not the only song writer-director Jordan Peele ingeniously features in his latest horror movie. The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” is played during the murders of Kitty (Elisabeth Moss) and Josh (Tim Heidecker), and Universal Pictures film music president Mike Knobloch confirmed to Variety that’s the only song Peele ever considered for the moment.
“Jordan is very smart and savvy about music and knows exactly what he wants,” Knobloch said. “From very early on when he wrote the script and going back to the earliest days of the production, I cannot remember a time when ‘Good Vibrations’ was not the song that was going to go in that sequence.

If, in years or decades to come, you can’t listen to a certain Beach Boys song without flinching, or a particular N.W.A number without laughing, Peele is the man to credit or blame.

“Us” makes prominent use of the mid-‘90s hip-hop hit “I Got 5 On It” — as heard in the trailer — in both song form and an eerie instrumental score reprise, as well as key cuts from the present and distant past by Janelle Monae and Minnie Riperton. But the choices that are going to...
