Film Movement has bought North American rights to My Mistress, Stephen Lance.s erotic drama about the affair between a vulnerable teenager. (Harrison Gilbertson) and a French S&M mistress (Emmanuelle Béart).
By If.s reckoning at least 27 Australian titles have secured Us distribution deals this year. Most are getting limited theatrical releases as a platform for home entertainment exposure.
Film Movement will release the film on DVD and VOD, including via its subscription streaming service dubbed Film-of-the-Month Club.
The deal was negotiated by international sales agent LevelK, which had already sold the film to Japan (New Select), the UK ( Film House), Russia (Russian Report) and Hong Kong (Sundream Motion Pictures).
LevelK.s Tine Klint is screening the film this week at the Busan International Film Festival in Korea and hopes to close more deals. Produced by Leanne Tonkes and Steve Kearney, the film opens in Australia on November 6 via Transmission.

Australian films seem to be inhabiting parallel universes. At home only three films have grossed more than $1 million this year while a broad slate of Oz titles has been sold to distributors around the world.

Barring a miracle or at least several hits, the Australian films released in cinemas this year have no hope of matching 2013.s combined gross of $38.5 million.
Through last Sunday, 43 local features and documentaries had racked up $18.5 million nationwide. That includes mostly small amounts earned by 20 titles that opened in 2013 or earlier. As the Safc.s Richard Harris has pointed out, the results of each film should be evaluated on the basis of its release strategy rather than regarding every film that earns less than $1 million as a disaster and proof that Australian audiences have turned away from Aussie cinema.
However distributors and producers were counting on far stronger ticket sales for the Spierig brothers. Predestination, Matt Saville.s Felony, David Michôd.s The Rover and Zak Hilditch.s These Final Hours.

Barring a break-out hit or at least several strong performers, the B.O. total of Australian films this calendar year is highly unlikely to match 2013.s $38.5 million.
Through last Sunday, 34 local films have racked up $16.03 million nationwide. That includes mostly small amounts earned this year by 19 titles that opened in 2013 or earlier.
While the local B.O. results should not be seen as the sole yardstick of any film.s global performance, the industry would have expected stronger ticket sales for David Michôd.s The Rover and last week.s opener, Zak Hilditch.s These Final Hours, while Rhys Graham.s Galore also underperformed.

Emma Slade, Steve Kearney, Briget Callow-Wright heading for the UK’s Production Finance Market.
Sales agents from across the world yesterday voted New Zealand’s Emma Slade as the producer at the 37º South Market who most deserves a spot at the UK’s Production Finance Market (Pfm) in October, plus $1,860 (A$2,000) in travel assistance.
Runner-ups Steve Kearney and Bridget Callow-Wright from Australia also won places – but no cash.
Organizers said 2,203 meetings were held as part of the eighth edition of the co-financing film market, which is part of the business arm of the Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff).
Slade will be seeking a sales agent for The Love Of Humankind, the lead project in her slate, during her visit to London.
The “vodka-fuelled tragicomedy about unrequited love” is to be directed by comedian Danny Mulheron (Fresh Meat) from a script by he and Brian Sergent.

Frequent listeners of the Sound On Sight podcast would have heard me discuss my day job working with kids. For the unfamiliar, I am the director of a community center, and the coordinator of a summer camp here in Montreal. At the start of the summer, I was talking to my kids about music and I discovered that none of them knew what a mix tape was, much less an audio cassette – so, I decided it would be a good idea to make them some complications. Of course, I’m not recording these on actual cassettes, but nevertheless, they get the idea. As it turns out, the kids love it, and now that the storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy revolves around a mix tape, they keep asking me to make more. Here’s the most recent compilation I’ve produced following Making Time. This one is simply titled, Awesome Mix Tape Vol.

The years 2008 and 2009 really weren’t that long ago. So it seems a bit odd to reflect on Breaking Bad—it just wrapped its final season in September and is an Emmys hopeful this year—or Lady Gaga when they are still relevant today. “Remember when” just doesn’t carry as much meaning here as it does with the earlier episodes in VH1′s I Love the 2000s series.
That being said, the show’s brilliant talking heads brought the last two installments in the series to life. (I certainly wasn’t sorry I spent my Saturday night watching them,...

A dozen events, one concert, tons of pictures. At this past weekend's first annual Vulture Festival, the editors and writers of this site took over New York City's Milk Studios for two days of pop-culture-themed events. The following things happened: Erykah Badu DJ'd the opening night party ("I just come up with these songs randomly. Whatever I feel. It's therapy, it's fun.") before doing an a cappella version of her song "Soldiers." A pre-elevator-news Solange opened our Saturday night concert, and M.I.A. closed it out by inviting several dozen fans onstage to do "Paper Planes" with her. Mike Birbiglia, Billy Eichner, the ladies of Broad City, and W. Kamau Bell brought Brooklyn's Bell House down with their comedy night set. TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz spoke with Deadwood creator David Milch about the new show he's writing for HBO. Parks and Recreation's Adam Scott and his wife...

As Pharrell Williams continues his reign atop the Billboard Hot 100 for the 10th week, “Happy” joins the ranks of only 28 songs that have logged that much time at No. 1 in the chart’s 55 years. The all-time record belongs to Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” which spent 16 weeks at No. 1 in 1996-1996, but Williams has an ace in his pocket: he was featured on the last song to top the chart for more than 10 weeks: Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” featuring Williams and T.I. The big question is if “Happy” will finally be toppled next week by John Legend’s “All of Me,” which has been stuck at No. 2 for six weeks. Legend’s song continues to gain steam at radio and via streaming. As they have before, Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty,” featuring 2 Chainz, and Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” featuring Juicy J, trade places,...

Frank Ocean, Diplo, and Half of The Clash Made an Infectious Song for Converse "Hero" is the chill new entry in the sneaker company's Three Artists, One Song series. by Liam Mathews At first, these names don't seem to go together. According to Diplo, he first met guitarist Mick Jones and bassist Paul Simonon through their lawyers. But those two songs are tremendous, so why wouldn't Diplo and these former Clashmen (and current Gorillaz) collaborate? It might work. The combined B.O. tally of the Australian films and documentaries released theatrically this year will fall far short of 2012.s $47.9 million.
Through last Sunday, the 24 local titles had raked in about $37.5 million, according to If.s estimates. Only four titles earned more than $1 million and of those, Goddess. result was generally regarded as soft. Excluding Baz Luhrmann.s The Great Gatsby, which amassed $28.2 million to rank as the fifth-highest Australian grosser of all time, and Tim Winton.s The Turning, the per-picture grosses vary from modest to skimpy.
To be fair, the eight lowest-ranked titles had limited playing time and three, Uncharted Waters, Circle of Lies and Lasseter.s Bones, had Q&A screenings.
Australian B.O. takings should not be seen as the sole barometer of each film's success, given many have multiple viewings on VOD, pay-tv and free-to-air TV. Festival exposure and critical acclaim are also important,...

The singer inspires impassioned onstage chaos on the first of a two-night stand at Los Angeles' Belasco Theatre.
As M.I.A. exited the stage of the Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles on Monday night, she literally dropped the mic. The singer had just offered an aggressive 90-minute onslaught of music and lights, climaxing with the song "Sexodus," and then mumbled something into her microphone as she strutted out.
It was an appropriate conclusion to the performance, which mashed the singer’s past hits like “Galang” and “Bucky Done Gun” with tracks from her intense new album, Matangi. She left little room to breathe between songs, each segueing into the next with a jangled blitz of in-your-face beats and stomach-churning bass.

This may turn out to be a premature and fanciful call but 2014 is shaping as potentially one of the strongest years for Australian films, commercially and critically, in recent memory.
There are numerous grounds for optimism, starting with the overwhelmingly positive responses and, in some cases, deals for Tracks, The Railway Man, Wolf Creek 2, Felony and Canopy after their world premieres at either the Toronto or Venice film festivals.
Given the talent attached, the slate of films now shooting or in post-production looks highly promising, including Kill Me Three Times, The Rover, Son of a Gun, I, Frankenstein, Predestination, Charlie.s Country, Fell and Now Add Honey.
Added to that are several films from experienced filmmakers that are due to roll soon: Cut Snake, The Dressmaker and Paper Planes.
Industry figures whom If consulted are bullish about the prospects for the year ahead. There is a .very good reason for such optimism,...

"There are loads of people here who can empathize with what it's like to have a dad who became a banker, a lawyer, a judge, a fucking whatever… a rocket scientist. And this is what happened to a kid whose dad went off and became a terrorist. And this is how it f*cked up the family."
If the consolation prize for starring in the Disney Channel Original Reality Series My Dad's A Terrorist is the shitty job of performing for hundreds of thousands of devoted fans while staying one of music's most controversial and polarizing figures (though Kanye West calling you "a fucking genius" certainly helps your cause), I think I'll take the gig, sir. The teaser for an upcoming documentary about the life of Mathangi Arulpragasam is here, covering everything from her broken family to her discovery, and how Diplo turned the "Paper Planes" singer into one of the most inventive artists alive.

Six of the 10 homegrown feature-length films that will have their world premieres at the Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) have been supported by the Miff Premiere Fund, including anthology drama The Turning and Anna Broinowski’s documentary Aim High In Creation!.
Australia’s oldest and largest film festival runs from July 25 to August 11, opening with Pedro Almodóvar’s I’m So Excited! and closing with Jc Chandor’s All Is Lost, starring Robert Redford.
The 17 programme strands include activism on film and new Arabic cinema, both of which artistic director Michelle Carey says “effortlessly suggested themselves”, plus such perennial favourites as the backbeat music program, accent on Asia, night shift, international panorama and documentaries.
The Turning is an adaptation of the country’s most popular Australian book of 17 short stories set in one locale, interconnected and written by acclaimed author Tim Winton. A different person has directed each. Some are first-timers including actors David Wenham and Mia Wasikowska...

Three features promised production investment from Screen Australia are to be partly filmed outside of the country.
The films include Ariel Kleiman’s directorial debut Partisan and Robert Connolly’s “big family film” Paper Planes, which were promised production investment from Screen Australia this week.
Australian filmmakers are increasingly looking outward and these two films continue that trend.
So too does Ruin, the third film backed this time around by Screen Australia. Formerly known as Om Tuk, the drama has already been filmed in Cambodia by writer/directors Amiel Courtin-Wilson and Michael Cody.
Anna McLeish, who is producing with her business partner Sarah Shaw, told ScreeenDaily that Partisan, starring Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), is expected to go into production in late September and will be filmed in Georgia, Europe and in Warp Films Australia’s home state of Victoria.

Pineapple Express, the 2008 stoner comedy starring James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Danny McBride, is continuing the story in an inspired follow-up to the original — complete with M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” in the soundtrack and a Woody Harrelson impression from Jonah Hill.
The exclusive red-band trailer, which premiered on Yahoo!, features more drugs, more antics, and even more bromance than the first. Check out the low, low budget preview below…

To celebrate April Fools' Day and simultaneously viral market the new film "This Is The End," Seth Rogen, James Franco and Danny McBride have put together a trailer for "Pineapple Express 2." This time, they must assassinate Woody Harrelson (played by Jonah Hill, because obviously). Thug life, indeed.
"This Is The End" is Rogen's apocalypse comedy where the actor cast his famous friends as variations on themselves (Franco, Hill and McBride are joined by Craig Robinson, Jay Baruchel and a cast of dozens). The comedy was co-written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg ("Superbad") and co-directed by the pair as well.
"We thought it'd be funny to see really famous people die in super graphic ways," Rogen said at WonderCon this weekend (via EW.com). "People were into it. At first we thought they'd be insulted or something like that — and some of them were -- but most of them weren't. They were into it.

While Hollywood seems to be overly sequel-happy these days, this one, alas, is too good to be true. A trailer for “Pineapple Express 2” made its way around the Internet this morning, purporting to reunite stars Seth Rogen and James Franco with supporting players Craig Robinson and Danny McBride -- all to the tune of the original film's soundtrack highlight, Mia's “Paper Planes.” Unfortunately for fans of the comedy, it was just Hollywood's way of saying April Fools. The goofy clip -- which is decidedly low-budget, and features Franco and Rogen toking and choking and wearing the same costumes from the first film -- is in reality another promo for the upcoming apocalypse comedy “This Is the End,” which features Rogen, Franco, Robinson, McBride, and a slew of other Apatow-adjacent actors. The premise is that the bored heroes, stuck inside because of said apocalypse, have taken to making on-the-fly sequels to...

From a circle of heroin addicts to the stage of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" to the mountains of Utah, British filmmaker Danny Boyle has taken audiences on every crazy, dramatic, thrill ride imaginable...almost. With his latest film "Trance," starring James McAvoy, Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson, Boyle takes us on a hypnotic mind trip down the rabbit hole of the art world. While all of Boyle's films are wildly diverse, they are united by one common thread: their use of iconic pop music. The memorable songs that both define and defy the pivotal moments of Boyle’s films range from Moby's "Porcelain" in "The Beach," to Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life" in "Trainspotting," to Mia's "Paper Planes" in "Slumdog Millionaire," to many songs by Rick Smith of Welsh electronic duo Underworld in "Trance." At a recent event at 92YTribeca in Manhattan, Boyle sat down with...

Los Angeles — Don't bother calling Diplo if you want to make something that sounds like a Diplo record. He's not interested.
"Producers in L.A. were hitting me up: `We need a Diplo record. We want to sound like Diplo,'" the producer said. "And I'm like, Diplo is the guy who's doing what nobody else is doing. So unless you're willing to jump off the cliff with me ... "
Jumping off the cliff has put Diplo right in the middle of things as Sunday's Grammy Awards approach.
Up for producer of the year, he's got parties with Snoop Dogg and Skrillex planned in the run up to music's biggest night. Next he'll release a new, much-anticipated Major Lazer album and the reggae album he produced for Snoop. Down the road he's got projects with Chris Brown, 2 Chainz, Tinie Tempah and Riff Raff among others.

"Identity Thief" is as bad as the reviews indicate, but it does possess two moments of sublimity: At the beginning and end of the film, director Seth Gordon made the wise decision to use the song "Bad Girls" as a music cue, thus making the M.I.A. track his film's unofficial theme.
If hearing "Bad Girls" in a piece of popular culture seems familiar, that's because it is: Over the last year, "Bad Girls" -- released on Jan. 31, 2012 -- has been used in a wide variety of film and television properties. It's the "Paper Planes" of right now ("Paper Planes," of course, was the "Paper Planes" of 2008). To celebrate "Bad Girls," let your chain hit your chest and enjoy a brief history of the track in the timeline below.
Jan. 31, 2012: "Bad Girls" is released as a single.
March 12, 2012: "Skins" features "Bad Girls" in the Season 6 episode "Liv.
