Sarah Snook has set her first TV starring role since the ending of “Succession.”
Snook will star in the series “All Her Fault,” which has been greenlit at Peacock. The show is based on the novel of the same name by Andrea Mara.
The official logline for the series states, “Marissa Irvine (Snook) arrives at 14 Arthur Avenue, expecting to pick up her young son Milo from his first playdate with a boy at his new school. But the woman who answers the door isn’t a mother she recognizes. She isn’t the nanny. She doesn’t have Milo. And so begins every parent’s worst nightmare.”
For her portrayal of Shiv Roy on “Succession,” Snook earned an Emmy Award in 2023, having been nominated in both 2022 and 2020 prior to that. She also won two Golden Globe Awards for the show. “Succession” wrapped up its critically-acclaimed run at HBO after four...

In 2014, Naomi Watts voiced an animated version of herself in the “BoJack Horseman” episode “One Trick Pony.” The Watts in Hollywoo — the “BoJack” stand-in for the entertainment industry’s epicenter, inhabited mostly by anthropomorphic animals — is starring opposite BoJack in a biopic about his frenemy, Mr. Peanutbutter. She appears on set preparing to play Diane, a burgeoning writer. The meta joke is the actress accepted the part to get a break from emotionally draining, praiseworthy performances.
“I just keep getting pigeonholed as these complex characters in highly acclaimed movies,” the animated Watts bemoans to a character who is a parody of host Ryan Seacrest (A Ryan Seacrest Type). “For once, I would just love to phone it in and play a two-dimensional girl in a rom-com with no inner life of her own. That’s kind of the reason I got into this business.”
Ten years later, that tongue-in-cheek guest appearance now feels almost prophetic.

Scream 7 and the Escape from New York requel may be off the table for the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence, but they have just set up a new high profile project. Deadline reports that Radio Silence is set to make The Robots Go Crazy, which has Andy Samberg of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Palm Springs, and Hot Rod attached to star in it.
Samberg is known for his comedy work, and sure enough, The Robots Go Crazy will be taking the Radio Silence team – which previously brought us the horror comedy Ready or Not, the slasher sequels Scream (2022) and Scream VI, the vampire movie Abigail, and segments of the horror anthologies V/H/S and Southbound – out of the horror genre. This project is being described as an action comedy.

Oklahoma’s State Superintendent Ryan Walters has already made headlines for sending context-free porn to his fellow lawmakers. He’s now accusing one of the school districts under his jurisdiction of supporting the exposure of children to what he describes as “pornography” in schools. What horrendous, degenerate, pornographic display of hedonism is Walters’ administration accusing teachers of hiding in libraries? In the years since "Avengers: Endgame" brought a close to the "Infinity Saga", the superhero studio quickly pivoted to replacing its original line-up with a host of new and relatively lesser-known figures. 2021's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" led the charge of fresh faces that also included the ensemble cast of "Eternals," Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova in "Black Widow," Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez in "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," and the team-up between Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) with Brie Larson's Carol Danvers in "The Marvels." Are these characters meant to ring in the next generation of Avengers (or, in Yelena's case, Thunderbolts)? That appears to be the plan, but with the next couple of major crossover movies already spoken for (hint: these include "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" and "Avengers: Secret Wars"), Kevin Feige will be hard-pressed...

Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.
Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.
Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

Just after a reported first quarter loss of $1.23 billion, Paramount has something to cheer this week. “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” ($19.99), released after its fifth weekend in theaters, is #1 on all VOD charts.
Reading the tea leaves that studios provide to figure out strategies is confusing. Paramount two weeks ago released “Scream VI” ($19.99) on both their own streaming platform and on PVOD. The much bigger-grossing horror film only reached #1 at Vudu, and at the end of its second week, only shows up on one of the three top ten lists.
As always, we are in the dark about the revenues a film ranked at #1 takes in. We do know that at a $19.99 price, Paramount recoups around $14/transaction. It appears they conceded much of that for “Scream VI,” hoping that it boosted the Paramount+ subscription interest. Again, this is mostly a mystery, though it is logical to assume its play...

May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.
“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. And if you missed the most recent season of the niche (but delightful) comedy series “Documentary Now!,” you can stream that on Netflix starting May 9.
Check out the full list of what’s new on Netflix in May 2023 below.

Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.
Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.
Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.
On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.

You might recognize the Texas native from her popular role as Max Mayfield in the hit Netflix sci-fi series "Stranger Things" but that's far from her only project. Since her early start in Hollywood, Sink has appeared in popular TV shows like "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," films like "The Glass Castle," and even Taylor Swift's "All Too Well: The Short Film."
The young actor shows no signs of slowing down. She's appeared in two films this upcoming year, including the drama "Dear Zoe" and "The Whale," alongside "The Mummy" actor Brendan Fraser, who praised her acting chops in "The Whale" in a November interview with GQ. The Kang Dynasty has its leader.
“Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings” director Destin Daniel Cretton will continue his tenure within the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the director of “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” a rep for Marvel Studios confirmed.
Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced “The Kang Dynasty” during the company’s wide-ranging presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, as part one of the two-part conclusion to the Multiverse Saga — similar to how 2018’s “Avengers: Infinity War” and 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” concluded the Infinity Saga.
Unlike those films — which were filmed and directed back-to-back by MCU veterans Anthony and Joe Russo — Cretton will only be directing “The Kang Dynasty,” which is set to debut on May 2, 2025. The follow-up, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” is due to open just six months later, on Nov. 7, 2025. No director has been announced for that film.

Pretty much every family has a reliably dutiful mitigator: They are the sacrificing person to whom siblings vent when familial affairs turn sour and parents call for on-demand assistance. Among the Frays — the family at the heart of Mayim Bialik’s soberly affecting if not a touch monotonous domestic drama “As They Made Us” — the honors belong to the selfless Abigail, portrayed by an elegantly low-key Dianna Agron.
Indeed, the frantic single mother of two hyper boys and columnist for The Modern Jew drops everything and runs to help out whenever there is yet another friction at her folks’ house. She is a certified saint and Bialik’s respectable directorial debut — loosely inspired by the former “Big Bang Theory” actress and current “Jeopardy” host’s own familial past — quickly builds a strong case for her virtuousness. We learn that even as a child stuck with a perennially quarreling mom and dad,...

The new year is continuing apace at Hulu. The streamer’s list of new releases for February 2022 is highlighted by one very interesting project.
Pam and Tommy is set to premiere on Feb. 2. Perhaps the Groundhog Day release date is intentional as the show will cover a particular moment of celebrity, sex, and exploitation from the early ’90s that seems to have repeated itself over and over. Sebastian Stan and Lily James star as Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson and the series follows the events and fallout of their homemade sex tape being stolen and unleashed on a nascent internet. If nothing else, getting the promo photos of Stan and James as the ’90s stars was worth it.

Spoiler Warning: Do not read this story if you haven’t seen “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” currently playing in theaters.
Throughout “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” there are only a few small signs that the 25th feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is actually a part of it. As Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and his best friend Katy (Awkwafina) navigate through modern San Francisco, they walk past posters signifying the aftermath of the “Blip” from “Avengers: Endgame,” when half the world’s population suddenly rematerialized. Later, when the duo first walk into an illegal fight club operating in a half-finished skyscraper in Macau, Wong (Benedict Wong) from 2016’s “Doctor Strange” is in the middle of a friendly sparring match with the Abomination from 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” — a teaser for the latter’s expected appearance in Marvel’s 2022 Disney Plus series “She-Hulk.” And,...

Looking at Destin Daniel Cretton’s filmography, he would appear to be an unlikely candidate to helm a Marvel film, especially one as pivotal as the first fresh installment of MCU Phase 4. Cretton has directed five feature films previously, all of which are real-life dramas, three being based on books, with two of those being memoirs. These seem a far cry from comics, but Cretton has a deep Marvel connection – Captain Marvel no less. Cretton’s second film, Short Term 12, was the first leading role for Carol Danvers herself – Brie Larson. His following films, The Glass Castle and Just Mercy, also starred Larson.
Cretton’s approach to Shang-Chi was unconventional. Beyond the obvious Kung Fu movie influences, Cretton was loosely inspired by Good Will Hunting. Cretton felt that the characters of Shang-Chi and Will Hunting (Matt Damon) had a lot of similarities in that they both had big secrets and a lot of emotional baggage.

When director Destin Daniel Cretton took his first meeting with Marvel Studios roughly two and a half years ago to discuss “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” he never actually expected to be handed the reins of the latest film in the biggest movie franchise in cinema history. Up to that point, Cretton had directed a series of small-scale independent dramas — “Short Term 12,” “The Glass Castle” — that were exceptional in the all-inclusive empathy the filmmaker deployed for all of his characters. As the child of a Japanese-American mother and a white father who grew up in a small town on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Cretton had made it his mission to tell stories that allowed for people who hadn’t had much time in the spotlight to step beyond snap judgments and show the fullness of who they are.

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is garnering ecstatic first reactions from film journalists following its August 16 world premiere. The movie is being singled out for its “spectacular” martial arts-driven action sequences, which many journalists agree bring a whole new energy to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Shang-Chi” marks the studio tentpole debut of indie favorite Destin Daniel Cretton, who first broke out with his SXSW favorite “Short Term 12.” Cretton’s other features include “The Glass Castle” and “Just Mercy.”
Marvel’s brief synopsis for “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” reads: “Following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Shang-Chi is drawn into the clandestine Ten Rings organization and is forced to confront the past he thought he left behind.” The movie stars “Kim’s Convenience” star Simu Liu in the title role opposite Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Wong Kar Wai favorite Tony Leung.

If you don’t have a toddler in your life, the world of Nick Jr.’s “Paw Patrol” world might not be one you recognize. I myself headed into a screening for “Paw Patrol: The Movie” as an ambivalent aunt, surrounded by little nieces and nephews who just squee in delight at the mere mention of their favorite animated hero pups.
At best, I figured, they will have some fun, and I can be the cool Tia. So, you can imagine my surprised delight to find “Paw Patrol: The Movie” to be engaging, funny, and wonderful.
Much of the credit goes to writer-director Cal Brunker (“The Nut Job 2”) and co-writers Billy Frolick (“Madagascar”) and Bob Barlen (“Arctic Dogs”), who have seamlessly created a movie world where you believe 10-year-olds can run around with their dogs and save the city from political corruption. Yes, political corruption, but that’s not...
