Matt Johnson’s BlackBerry satirical comedy earned the best movie honor at the Canadian Screen Awards on Friday, which also tapped the Canadian Indigenous TV series Little Bird as the best TV drama.
In earlier prize-giving this week, BlackBerry picked up hardware for best adapted screenplay, cinematography and a best supporting comedy performance trophy for Glenn Howerton. The fact-based feature that bowed in Berlin also awarded Johnson the best director honor, and Jay Baruchel the best comedy performance trophy.
Little Bird, which came into the Canadian film and TV awards with a field-leading 19 nominations, saw Darla Contois pick up the best TV drama performance prize after the series earlier earned trophies for best drama ensemble, best casting and best supporting drama performer for Braeden Clarke.

Recently, I watched the trailer for Transformers One, the Cybertron-set sequel about the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron. Every time I see that trailer attached to whatever movie, an unenthusiasm washes over. It’s mainly a byproduct of Chris Hemsworth and Brian Tyree Henry’s casting as pre-Adam’s-apple-dropped versions of their respective characters. And make no mistake, they did not change their voices at all for these roles.
It’s not just Transformers One that’s the butt of this phenomenon though. Nearly every animated movie emphasizes a celebrity voice cast as part of its marketing. How else can you explain the overexposure of Chris Pratt as this weekend’s Garfield and last year’s Super Mario? It’s even standard day practice now for the character poster to also feature an actor’s name above the animation design, a la “Zendaya is Meechee.” This exists, presumably, to lure adults into the theater.

Disney has recently changed the Disability Access Service (Das) at Walt Disney World, and people are unhappy. I keep seeing post after post on numerous Disney message boards and groups discussing their disappointment with the new rules. Many people who are even considered disabled by the government are being denied Das access.
If a guest wants a Das pass, they must first get preapproved via a quick phone interview with a medical professional to ensure they qualify. Under the new guidelines, what qualifies for Das is a “developmental disability like autism or similar disorder.” Yet many people have legitimate physical issues that can hinder standing in lines for prolonged periods.
But why is Disney doing this?
File this under an opinion, but I think that a large part is about money and profits.
While I agree that the Das pass has been massively abused and needs stricter guidelines, Disney’s new criteria seem too strict.

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.
Limited series acting hopefuls Nicole Kidman (“Expats”) and Johnny Flynn (“Ripley”) also recently improved upon their 100/1 odds,...

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the telefilms most likely to land in this year’s lineup. As it stands, Peacock’s “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” (a continuation of the eight-time Emmy-winning 2000s comedy series “Monk”) is comfortably leading the race.
“Mr. Monk’s Last Case” would be the first Peacock movie ever nominated in this category, as would “Genie” or “Shooting Stars.”
Last year, Hulu’s “Fire Island” and “Prey” were both passed over in favor of The Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” but the streamer could soon avenge those losses with “No One Will Save You,” “Quiz Lady,” or “Self Reliance.”
Netflix – which won this award for three “Black Mirror” installments (2017-2019) as well as “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” (2021) – can now achieve its fifth victory with “Scoop” or “Unfrosted.”

Exclusive: Following her work with Netflix on its popular family films Family Leave and Yes Day, as well as The Adam Project, the sci-fi pic with Ryan Reynolds marking one of its biggest to date in terms of viewership, Jennifer Garner is back in business with the streamer after signing on to star in its holiday comedy, Mrs. Claus, sources tell Deadline.
Netflix had no comment. Details as to the plot of the film are under wraps. Disney has found a way to gouge guests even further with the Genie+ add-on. According to WDWMagic, today’s Genie+ options will cost you between $29 – $39 per person on top of the $159-$179 ticket prices and then tax. This is getting ridiculous.
For March 23, Genie+ has hit the highest price point since New Year’s Eve. The add-on will cost you $39 for the Magic Kingdom or the multi-park option. The other parks will cost you different amounts. Today, it is $35 for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, $32 for Epcot, and $29 for Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
This is on top of the already pricey park tickets.
A Magic Kingdom one-day base ticket for March 23 is $179 + $39 = $218 per person plus taxes.
A Disney’s Hollywood Studios one-day base ticket for March 23 is $174 + $35 = $209 per person plus tax.
Epcot will also cost you $174 today for a one-day base ticket. $174 + $32 = $206 per person plus tax.

The Canadian Screen Awards has a new date and venue.
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television has pushed the dates for the country’s equivalent of the Oscars and Emmys combined to May 28-31 in Toronto.
The change for the CSAs, from an initial April 7-14 schedule, followed the prize-giving taking place as a virtual event every year since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That is, until last year’s Canadian Screen Week, which was held at Toronto’s Meridian Hall from April 11-14.
“Due to venue availability in Toronto, we have made the decision to move Canadian Screen Week 2024 to May,” Tammy Frick, CEO of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, said in a statement on Thursday.
This year’s CSAs will be held at the CBC Broadcast Centre in Toronto, the headquarter of the public broadcaster set to air the final-night awards giving on May 31.

NBCUniversal has led the way in terms of holiday season programming. Beginning with record viewership of the annual Macy’s Parade and other ratings wins along the way, the company has boasted a total of 82 million viewers of its holiday programming across NBC and Peacock since Thanksgiving, according to the most current measurement available.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade was the No. 1 program contributing to that total, as the event has remained the most-watched non-news and non-sports program on all of television since 2021. After debuting to 28.5 million viewers, it has since reached 40 million viewers.
NBCU’s next four most-watched holiday programs of the year are the NFL game between San Francisco and Seattle on Thanksgiving night (33 million viewers), “National Dog Show” (21 million viewers), “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” (12 million viewers) and “Christmas at the Opry” (8 million viewers).

Roku released its list of the top-searched movies, TV series, actors and actresses in 2023 on its devices — compiled from more than 1.2 billion total searches in the U.S.
Boinging into the top spot: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which beat out every other movie and TV series as the No. 1 most-searched title on Roku in America for the year. Peacock’s movie Genie delivered a solid opening for Peacock during Thanksgiving week — big enough, in fact, to rank as the streamer’s biggest original film to date.
The holiday comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu premiered Nov. 22 on Peacock and drew about 405 million minutes of viewing time over its first five days, according to Nielsen figures (the full streaming top 10 charts for Thanksgiving week will be available later in December). It’s set to rank seventh among movies for that week, which typically sees a number of holiday favorites (a la Home Alone and Elf) re-enter the streaming charts.
The 405 million minutes of watch time for Genie is the equivalent of about 4.35 million complete showings of the 93-minute film (which is the now-codified standard for a “view” of a streaming movie or series).
Genie stars McCarthy as Flora, a genie who’s been trapped for more than 2,000 years inside an antique jewelry box.

Paapa Essiedu had an "out of body experience" working with Melissa McCarthy on 'Genie'.The 33-year-old actor features as Bernard – a workaholic who attempts to win his family back before the Christmas celebrations with the help of the magical genie Flora - in the Richard Curtis-scripted movie and found it "surreal" to see the 'Bridesmaids' star add even more the picture with her acting ability.Speaking on 'The Graham Norton Show', Paapa said: "Obviously when you do a movie penned by Richard Curtis you know the script is unbeatable, but then Melissa comes along, rips it up and adds so much."It's surreal, she is an elite improviser, and I had an out of body experience watching her. I had to remind myself to act. It was the great learning experience for me. She is brilliant."'Genie' is a remake of Richard's 1991 TV...

To writer-director Richard Curtis, one “Love Actually” scene actually isn’t perfect.
The filmmaker reflected on the 2003 Christmas rom-com to The Independent UK while promoting new film “Genie.” As “Love Actually” celebrates its 20th anniversary, Curtis admitted that a particular scene involving Andrew Lincoln’s character professing his love to his best friend’s new wife (Keira Knightley) with a series of cue cards hasn’t aged well.
“He actually turns up, to his best friend’s house, to say to his best friend’s wife, on the off chance that she answers the door, ‘I love you,'” Curtis said. “I think it’s a bit weird. I mean, I remember being taken by surprise about seven years ago, I was going to be interviewed by somebody and they said, ‘Of course, we’re mainly interested in the stalker scene,’ and I said, ‘What scene is that?’ And then I was,...

In Black Mirror season 6, episode 5, titled Demon 79, Paapa Essiedu played a demonic agent from hell summoned by a South Asian woman who had to make three sacrifices to free the demon. Now, in Peacock’s comedy film Genie, he is playing the central protagonist, Bernard Bottle, who accidentally summons a genie. Now he has to make three wishes, which will be able to bring his life back on track. Genie is a feel-good comedy film with a narrative as pleasant and cute as Melissa McCarthy. The narrative follows Bernard, an exploited employee working a taxing job who is unable to give some quality time to his family. This leads his wife to decide to take a break from her husband. However, one day a frustrated Bernard rubs an old jewelry box, and an ancient genie (played by Melissa McCarthy) emerges from it. Now, Bernard would have to make three wishes...

Genies, at least in pop culture, have long been comic foils. Way back in 1940, in “The Thief of Bagdad,” Rex Ingram played Djinn, the movie’s larger-than-life genie — 100 feet tall in his ponytail and red diaper — as a sly, laughing soul man of lighthearted effrontery. The surrealist ’60s sitcom “I Dream of Jeannie” featured Barbara Eden, in diaphanous harem silks, as a magical servant/housewife, blinking her eyes to teleport her clueless “master” out of trouble. And Robin Williams’ vocal performance as the Genie in “Aladdin” may have come closer than any of his other film performances to channeling Williams the free-associational joke geyser.
So in “Genie,” when Melissa McCarthy pops out of a jewel box and reveals herself to be an ancient granter of wishes named Flora, it’s hardly a surprise that 1) the character is a complete lark, and 2) the whole joke is that Flora, though she hasn...

You have to really watch your language when hanging out with a genie. Especially a genie who can grant unlimited wishes. After all, it’s too easy to utter the words “I wish” when you don’t really mean them, and the result could be that you accidentally send someone directly to Hell. So please, please, be careful what you say.
If that warning seems a bit fanciful, then you haven’t seen the new holiday-themed Christmas movie premiering on Peacock. Genie features so many jokes revolving around characters carelessly uttering “I wish” only to have to quickly reverse themselves that the film seems more like a public service announcement than a would-be holiday classic.
Written by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill), the streaming film is a loose remake of Bernard and the Genie, a 1991 BBC television movie that he also scripted. You can’t blame...

Disney has been commemorating their 100th anniversary all year long. From theme park celebrations to a massive 100-film box set, the studio has gone all-out for the special occasion. But their most recent short film, the live action/animation hybrid Once Upon a Studio — now available for streaming on Disney+ — might be the most touching of all. And while it’s filled with hundreds of cameos, one that stands out is Genie from Aladdin, voiced by none other than Robin Williams — not just in the 1992 classic but in Once Upon a Studio as well.

Get the details inside…
“It was actually direct lines from past recordings,” producer Yvett Merino told Polygon. “When we do animated recordings on any feature, there are a number of takes. So we were able to find this line that fits so well in our short.”
The use of Robin‘s voice, however, was not used without his estate’s permission.
