Michael Caton and 2015 Young Filmmaker of the Year winner Lauren Brunswick
Nominees have been announced for the West Australian Screen Awards (Wasa) Young Filmmaker of the Year and include Briege Whitehead, Jess Black, Hayden Fortescue and Jordon Prince-Wright.
The winner will receive a cash prize of $5000 and a custom-made Geoffrey Drake-Brockman Wasa trophy..
Last year.s winner, producer Lauren Brunswick (Top Knot Detective) said the value of the award lived within its ability to empower other emerging filmmakers to feel they could achieve their ambitions.
"The feat of beginning a career becomes more manageable when we feel someone has tackled it before us. A spotlight of this nature allowed me to meet more people within the film community, feel the enormous support they offer, and remember to whittle the pressures of our aspirations down to a series of steps that we must collectively be brave to undertake,". she said.

Det. Robbie Green (Jonathan Lapaglia) drinks vodka out of a shampoo container. He's got a drinking problem. His old friend and colleague, Jason (Luke Hemsworth), is mysteriously murdered in his car with the only clue being reams of digital footage on a Sd card. The footage was made by a runaway, Rachel (Hanna Mangan Lawrence), who is tracking down her sister's killer with the aid of internet pal, Aj (Alex Williams). As Green and Det. Jane Lambert (Viva Bianca)--clichéd backstory alert--follows the clues in parallel to this footage, things show themselves to be more obvious than they at first appear. Australian mystery, The Reckoning (2014), is a lot like a decently cast BBC series except without the character quirks to justify more than one episode. So, Like Thorne (2010), then.

After platforming at four cinemas in New York and Los Angeles John Curran.s Tracks expanded to 28 screens in the Us last weekend.
The 3-day gross was $US70,951 for a per-screen average of $2,534, bringing the 10-day cume to $103,098.
That.s not a great result for the Weinstein Co., which originally intended to launch the Outback adventure starring Mia Wasikowska as .camel girl. Robyn Davidson in May.

Barring a miracle or at least several hits, the Australian films released in cinemas this year have no hope of matching 2013.s combined gross of $38.5 million.
Through last Sunday, 43 local features and documentaries had racked up $18.5 million nationwide. That includes mostly small amounts earned by 20 titles that opened in 2013 or earlier. As the Safc.s Richard Harris has pointed out, the results of each film should be evaluated on the basis of its release strategy rather than regarding every film that earns less than $1 million as a disaster and proof that Australian audiences have turned away from Aussie cinema.
However distributors and producers were counting on far stronger ticket sales for the Spierig brothers. Predestination, Matt Saville.s Felony, David Michôd.s The Rover and Zak Hilditch.s These Final Hours.

Go big or go small- just avoid the middle ground in Australian film budgets.
That approach is being advocated by some industry executives and producers in response to the global trend which sees many mid-level films being marginalised.
.In light of the recent flight of the indie audiences in Australia and worldwide and the fact that indie films are struggling in the cinematic marketplace, there will be an increasing bifurcation of the production landscape,. predicts Safc CEO Richard Harris.
.There has long been a discussion about what has been dubbed the .dead zone. for feature films, somewhere between $5m-$15m.
.Some Australian producers will continue to see cinema as the main game for their film and therefore they will think about their budget in terms of competing in what is an increasingly difficult theatrical space.

Barring a break-out hit or at least several strong performers, the B.O. total of Australian films this calendar year is highly unlikely to match 2013.s $38.5 million.
Through last Sunday, 34 local films have racked up $16.03 million nationwide. That includes mostly small amounts earned this year by 19 titles that opened in 2013 or earlier.
While the local B.O. results should not be seen as the sole yardstick of any film.s global performance, the industry would have expected stronger ticket sales for David Michôd.s The Rover and last week.s opener, Zak Hilditch.s These Final Hours, while Rhys Graham.s Galore also underperformed.

An analysis of the Australian films released in cinemas in 2013 makes for grim reading, with a handful of critical and/or commercial successes outnumbered by misfires and under-achievers.
On the positive side, the debut films from directors Kim Mordaunt (The Rocket), Catriona McKenzie (Satellite Boy) and Mark Grentell (Backyard Ashes) unearthed talent with plenty of potential.
The year ended on a strong note with the Boxing Day launch of Jonathan Teplitzy.s The Railway Man, which ranks as the second-highest local grosser behind Baz Luhrmann.s The Great Gatsby, which amassed $27.4 million to become the fifth-biggest Australian title of all time.
Tellingly, the drama starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman raked in more money in its first week than the lifetime earnings of every other title. According to If.s estimate, the combined B.O. tally of the 26 local films and documentaries is $38.88 million, well short of 2012.s $47.9 million.

This may turn out to be a premature and fanciful call but 2014 is shaping as potentially one of the strongest years for Australian films, commercially and critically, in recent memory.
There are numerous grounds for optimism, starting with the overwhelmingly positive responses and, in some cases, deals for Tracks, The Railway Man, Wolf Creek 2, Felony and Canopy after their world premieres at either the Toronto or Venice film festivals.
Given the talent attached, the slate of films now shooting or in post-production looks highly promising, including Kill Me Three Times, The Rover, Son of a Gun, I, Frankenstein, Predestination, Charlie.s Country, Fell and Now Add Honey.
Added to that are several films from experienced filmmakers that are due to roll soon: Cut Snake, The Dressmaker and Paper Planes.
Industry figures whom If consulted are bullish about the prospects for the year ahead. There is a .very good reason for such optimism,...

Regardless of which side wins Saturday.s election, the incoming government is not likely to provide any immediate stimulus or benefit to the screen production industry, except a tightening of the copyright laws.
But the screen sector has little to fear if the Coalition is swept to power, according to If.s admittedly unscientific survey of industry players.
Given the ballooning deficit facing the new government, the industry probably cannot expect any short-term increase to the 16.5% location rebate or the doubling of the 20% producer offset for TV fare.
Senator George Brandis, the shadow Arts Minister and Attorney-General, has flagged that, if elected, he will oppose a relaxation of the copyright laws foreshadowed in a review by the Australian Law Reform Commission, which is due to be delivered in November.

Chris Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky, hit the blue carpet at last night's Oceana Ball in NYC. The pair were also joined by Chris's older brother, Luke Hemsworth, as well as Kate Walsh and Adrian Grenier for the foundation's inaugural ball, which serves to protect and restore the ocean. Ahead of his big night out, Chris was able to spend some quality time bonding with his brother in the city. The brothers paired up with Elsa and Luke's girlfriend for a morning NYC stroll. Shooting is expected to start in April with John V. Soto directing from his own script.
If the lead’s names sounds familiar it’s because they have some famous siblings. Jonathan is the younger brother of Anthony Lapaglia (Without A Trace, Empire Records) and Luke is the older brother of Chris and Liam Hemsworth.
