As generative artificial intelligence marches on the entertainment industry, Hollywood is taking stock of the tech and its potential to be incorporated into the filmmaking process. No tool has piqued the town’s interest more than OpenAI’s Sora, which was unveiled in February as capable of creating hyperrealistic clips in response to a text prompt of just a couple of sentences. In recent days, the Sam Altman-led firm released a series of videos from beta testers who are providing feedback to improve the tech. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with some of those Sora testers about what it can, and can’t, really do.
Sora was made available to the team at Shy Kids, a Toronto-based production company composed of Walter Woodman, Sidney Leeder and Patrick Cederberg, who’ve collaborated on projects with HBO, Disney and Netflix in feature films such as Blackberry, Therapy Dogs and Nerve. With the tool,...

We’re only a handful of days into the New Year, but we’re already receiving news of what movies and TV shows will leave Netflix UK in February 2024.
In case you missed it, we’re also keeping track of all of the movies and TV shows leaving Netflix UK in January 2024. If you’re looking for the US removals list, you can find all the departures for those in our February list here.
As a reminder, we typically get word of Netflix removals around 30 days before they’re due to happen. Netflix removes titles because much of its library consists of licensed titles. These licensed titles are essentially rented to Netflix for a fixed period of time, and when that time is up, they’re removed from the platform.

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

With its list of new releases for March 2023, Amazon Prime Video might be rolling out its most impressive monthly lineup yet.
We know that sounds like something straight out of a press release but in this case, it’s actually true! Prime Video, bless it, has some excellent original titles like The Boys and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, but its monthly release updates have often been less inspiring than its TV peers. That’s certainly not the case with March 2023 though.
Prime Video gets its streaming party started early by premiering the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six on March 3. This series, based on a book of the same name, tells the fictional Behind the Music-esque story of an equally fictional band. Then, on March 17, Amazon’s partnership with Donald Glover bears its first fruit with the series about obsessive fandom called Swarm. Reggie Jackson documentary Reggie premieres...

March is still winter, no matter which animal you ask, which means it’s still completely acceptable to cancel all plans and curl up under a blanket in front of the TV. After more than a quarter-century as a movie star, Owen Wilson is finally suiting up to play a superhero in Secret Headquarters, the new Paramount Plus family flick directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. If those names sound familiar to you, it’s because they were behind such diverse and eccentric flicks as Paranormal Activity 3 & 4 (3 is by far the best movie in the franchise), the better-than-expected teen thriller Nerve, and the recent Netflix hit Project Power.
In this, Wilson plays a mild-mannered family man named Jake Kincaid who has a secret life. No, he’s not a killer or a bigamist – it’s all much more innocent than that. It turns out, he’s a legit superhero with a headquarters built under the family home. "Whoever has this technology can do anything." Paramount Pictures has finally revealed an official trailer for Secret Headquarters, a superhero action comedy from the filmmakers Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman. This was originally set to open in theaters, but will instead be streaming directly on Paramount+ in August. Young Charlie Kincaid discovers a secret headquarters under his home that seems to belong to a powerful superhero. The film stars Walker, Scobell, Jesse Williams, Keith L. Williams, Momona Tamada, and Michael Peña, with Owen Wilson as Charlie's father. It's also produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, which means they spared no expense on the action. This definitely looks like it's trying to be a new Spy Kids movie, with ...

Stars: Lauren Beatty, Greg Bryk, Katharine King So, Michael Ironside, Judith Buchan | Written by Wendy Hill-Tout, Lowell | Directed by Amelia Moses
We reviewed Amelia Moses’ Bleed With Me at Fantasia last year. And now her latest feature, Bloodthirsty, co-written by Wendy Hill-Tout and her daughter Lowell, is screening at Frightfest after a successful US festival run. Her first film was a take on vampirism, the second takes on lycanthropy. Can she go two for two in updating classic monsters?
Grey is a singer with a hit debut album. She also has writer’s block and nightmares about becoming a wolf. Dr. Swan gives her pills but they aren’t helping. She might have a cure for her writing issues though. Vaughn Daniels a reclusive producer whose career is equal parts successful and controversial has offered his services. Grey and her girlfriend Charlie (Katharine King So; Transplant) take up residence at his isolated studio.

The “Dead Ringers” series at Amazon has added both Jennifer Ehle and Emily Meade in recurring roles, Variety has learned.
They join previously announced series lead Rachel Weisz as well as cast members Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, Britne Oldford and Jeremy Shamos.

The series version will see Weisz playing the double lead role of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes, including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.

Tony Scott was no stranger to remakes, having provided his take on 1974 classic The Taking of Pelham 123, and even considered updates on The Warriors and The Wild Bunch before he sadly took his own life in 2012. Now, with a sequel to his mega-hit Top Gun arriving later this year, his debut film The Hunger is also being revisited in the form of a remake.
Deadline reports that Angela Robinson (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women) will direct the project while Jessica Sharzer will be scripting. If you've been wondering if Project Power's Newt (better known as the guy on fire) is played by Machine Gun Kelly, the answer is "yes." And if you were surprised to see him appear in the Netflix film, you really shouldn't be. Colson Baker may be better known as a rapper from Cleveland, but believe it or not, the 30-year-old has actually been adding to his acting résumé for a while now. In fact, he made his acting debut back in 2014 in the romantic drama Beyond the Lights.

Set over a day and night in New Orleans, Project Power (now streaming on Netflix) pivots on a hot new street drug called Power that you swallow like a pill and kaboom! You’re a superhero. Well, you’re a superhero for five minutes … and the damn thing can kill you. No pill creates the same result; it’s unique to each user. One customer may suddenly be able to run 45 mph, another can grow bulletproof skin, and still another can become invisible. If you want to buy a couple...

It’s called Power. Packaged in a glimmering capsule, the secretive new drug and its attendant pushers arrive in a major American city, hit the streets, spread the pills, and move on. In its wake: a new class of addicts, people who have discovered that one hit of Power can unlock abilities — superhero-esque, you might say — they never knew they had. It’s a thrilling idea for an action film, and one that takes compelling shape in “Project Power,” the latest from “Catfish” filmmakers Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. Still, armed with a stellar cast, including Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and rising star Dominique Fishback,

"You never know what your power is until your try it." Netflix has released the first official trailer for an intriguing new action thriller titled Project Power, the latest feature from Catfish directors Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman. When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenage dealer and a local cop must team with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation. Jamie Foxx stars with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and a cast including Dominique Fishback, Rodrigo Santoro, Colson Baker, Allen Maldonado, Amy Landecker, and Courtney B. Vance. This looks cool! Some slick visuals and full-on style, along with a fun twist on the superhero concept (just like The Old Guard). Only five minutes of power! And who knows what it will be? Scary but cool. I'm interested in giving this a watch, might be a good time.

Netflix’s “Project Power” has been in the works years, but the wait for the action movie’s release is almost over. The streaming service is releasing the movie on its platform August 14 and has unveiled the trailer for the sci-fi action thriller. “Project Power” takes place in a world where a special drug empowers humans with random superhuman abilities for five minutes. A father (Jamie Foxx) must rescue his daughter (Dominique Fishback) from the drug’s villainous manufacturers while working alongside unexpected allies. The film also stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who plays a police detective who gets involved in Foxx’s character’s quest, Machine Gun Kelly, Rodrigo Santoro, Amy Landecker, and Allen Maldonado.

We’re now at the halfway point of 2020 and while this year has seen some excellent films get a release, it’s been a tumultuous time determining the exact release calendar each month. As distributors are deciding often on-the-fly what strategies work best, as we look towards July, we’ve gathered our most-anticipated new arrivals based on what is currently scheduled.
We’ll also note that as of this publishing date A24 still has Saint Maud on its theatrical release schedule for July 17th, but we’ll be surprised if that takes shape, so we’ll only mention it at the top here. However, the company will definitely release at least one of their acclaimed features this month, which we’ll kick this list off with.
Special Mention: First Cow (Kelly Reichardt; July 10)

As the social media sphere steadily encroaches on “real life,” many filmmakers struggle with how to best translate the way characters interact in the digital space on to the big screen. How do you create cinematic interpretations that don’t feel out of touch with the way the Facebooks and Twitters and iMessages of the world actually work? The challenge has created its own genre, with films like “Searching” and “Unfriended” using virtual interactions to frame their narratives; other films have tried to shoehorn off-brand apps to approximate How We Live Now with less exciting results. But what does social media feel like?
Emily Cohn’s “Crshd,” , has a brilliant answer for that. Set during the waning days of their first year at college, “Crshd” follows a trio of best pals as they attempt to make romantic magic happen with a slew of possible paramours as helped by their Very Online lives.

The McU isn’t planning on slowing down with the character introductions any time soon, as the already crowded cinematic universe is now exploring bringing Spider-Woman into the mix. And according to our sources, the studio already have an actress in mind to take over the role.
We’re being told that American Horror Story star Emma Roberts is being eyed to play the superhero on the big screen. There’s even a chance she might debut in Spider-Man 3, though nothing is certain as of yet and from what we understand, she’s just one name on Marvel’s wishlist at the moment. And given that this intel comes to us from the same sources who said the studio is eyeing Daniel Radcliffe for Moon Knight and Tom Holland is in talks for a Venom 2 cameo, both of which we now know to be true, we’ve no reason to doubt it.

If you somehow haven't heard yet, Netflix is coming out with a Mötley Crüe biopic, and it looks seriously wild. Based on Mötley Crüe's bestselling 2001 autobiography The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band, this long-awaited biopic will follow the story of the heavy metal band's rise from obscurity to super stardom and international fame during the course of the 1980s. What's even crazier than the stories drugs, alcohol, and groupies told in the book (which are supposedly all true) is the incredibly stacked cast, and we can't imagine a better person to play Mötley Crüe's founding member and drummer Tommy Lee than Machine Gun Kelly.
Plenty of people were surprised to see Colson Baker playing Felix (better known as the jerk who stole the car) in Netflix's insanely popular post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box (pictured ahead), but they shouldn't be. The 28-year-old Cleveland-born rapper has actually been adding...

Damon Lindelhof’s upcoming political action-thriller The Hunt has added three big names to its cast. Emma Roberts, Justin Hartley, and Glenn Howerton have joined the movie, and although no plot details have been released yet, the movie is supposed to be based around the current political climate as we know it.
There’s a lot of material there, and a lot of different directions they can go. I like all three actors, and generally find them pretty pleasant, so it will be interesting to see them as politicians if that’s the way the film goes, as I generally despise politicians. I know, controversial and groundbreaking stance.
I’ve read two conflicting reports stating The Hunt will hit theaters in either September or October, but we do know production has begun, so I’m sure we will get a definitive date very soon.
Do you like political thrillers? Which one is your favorite?...
