Spoilers are in this article and video for the series finale.
Filmmaker Lorene Scafaria isn’t just the director of two of the best “Succession” episodes from its just-finished final season – “Honeymoon States” and “Living+” – she’s also a major fan of the show itself who is more than happy to discuss the series finale.
“We could talk about that forever if you want. It’s a perfect episode. It’s a perfect ending,” Scafaria – an Emmy Award nominee for the “Succession” Season 3 episode “Too Much Birthday” – tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview about the final episode. “I don’t know how they did it. It’s a show that aims quite high for referencing everything from ‘The Godfather’ to ‘King Lear.’ But I think it achieves it. It was so satisfying, in a way. It wasn’t as steeped in the same sort of tear-jerking emotion as other episodes.

Ma Mère et Moi (My Mother and I) came to fruition after she bravely pulled out of a project which she didn’t feel entirely invested in and is a reflection of her passion for filmmaking and telling stories which mean something to her. Ma Mère et Moi follows Kees and her mother on a road trip from the Netherlands to France where their incredibly strong, but perhaps unhealthy, relationship is about to change irrevocably as they part ways. Branderhorst has a strong focus on character driven films which sees her draw you into the worlds she creates with close-up camera work and her personal unflinching gaze. March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Among the many cruelties of the coronavirus outbreak has been the way social distancing measures prevent us from visiting our relatives, which should be especially difficult on Mother’s Day for those who are accustomed to spending that time with mom.
That’s where movies can assist: Why not select a film — from the list below or one of your own choosing — and schedule a time for you and mom to watch it “together, apart”? You can both rent the movie (many are included free through streaming subscriptions) or pick an old favorite that’s in both of your home video collections, press play at the same time, then call each other afterward to talk about it.
In theory, every film character ever written has a mother, so it’s nearly impossible to imagine a definitive list of the greatest cinematic homages to the women who raised us (“momages”?). And besides,...

Sure, the bulk of Oscar buzz for “Hustlers” is going to Jennifer Lopez‘s career comeback performance as a stripper who takes advantage of wealthy men, but what about the film’s writer-director, Lorene Scafaria? The box office hit could land the veteran filmmaker her very first Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
SEELorene Scafaria Interview: ‘Hustlers’ director
Scafaria has made a name for herself in the independent film scene in recent years, writing and directing “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” (2012) and “The Meddler” (2015) and penning the script for “Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist” (2008). An energetic entry in a current wave of what might be called Income Inequality Cinema — where the screwed-over working class fights for their piece of the 0.1% pie — “Hustlers” is an uneven but mostly entertaining tale of strippers exploiting their exploiters.
Based on Jessica Pressler’s New York magazine article about performers at New York City’s legendary Scores nightclub, the film represents a step up for director Lorene Scafaria, whose previous two theatrical features (“The Meddler” and “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”) were well-cast but emotionally unsatisfying.
And whereas “The Meddler” seemed to love gleaming surfaces for their own sake (the film often resembled an advertisement for The Grove shopping center in L.A.), “Hustlers” cinematographer Todd Banhazi (Janelle Monáe’s “Dirty Computer”) cannily intersperses the neon fantasy of the strip club and the magazine-spread sheen of upscale Manhattan apartments with a jolt of naturalist light...

It has been a while since Jennifer Lopez has had a live-action film — namely, 1998’s “Out of Sight”– that earned a positive ranking on Rotten Tomatoes. I am happy to declare JLo has broken her losing streak and scored an unexpected major crowd-pleaser that also wooed critics after its premiere the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. If anyone was looking for a surprise breakout hit for Oscar attention a la “Green Book” this year,”Hustlers” seems to poised to slide into that spot.

Lopez’s supporting performance as Ramona garnered instant Oscar buzz.

Filmmaker Lorene Scafaria has made just three feature films over the course of the last seven years, pacing out her nifty dramedies like “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” and “The Meddler,” perhaps in hopes that the film world will move past its affection for genre conventions and stop attempting to slot everything into a single box. If Scafaria has a signature, it’s emotional comedy-dramas about good people pushed to crazy ends, a concept she’s approached from both extremes, moving from a literal apocalypse to an overbearing mother.
Considered from that vantage, Scafaria’s third film, “Hustlers,” is a natural fit for her oeuvre, even as its splashy plotline (incorrectly) hints at a wholly different experience. It’s not only Scafaria’s best film, it’s also And, yes, it’s also a film about strippers, but more than that, it’s about women doing...

Jennifer Lopez may be the leading lady of Lorene Scafaria’s upcoming true-life stripper crime drama “Hustlers,” but the musician and actress isn’t the only multi-talented star rounding out the ranks of the ensemble feature. Alongside Lopez, Scafaria has also cast breakouts and standbys like Constance Wu, Keke Palmer, Julia Stiles, Lili Reinhart, Trace Lysette, and Madeline Brewer. And then there are the real surprises: fellow pop and rap superstars Cardi B and Lizzo. As Scafaria tells it, she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I was chasing Cardi before there was a movie, it was like two years of chasing Cardi on Instagram,” Scafaria said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I was chasing Lizzo for like a year as well. Both of them are people that I was only dreaming would be in the movie. Of course, my job is made easier when Jennifer Lopez is...

NetflixThis 2015 film has Susan Sarandon and Rose Byrne playing mother and daughter.Vaishnavi SundarThe Meddler, a heartwarming film starring Susan Sarandon that originally released in 2015, has made a grand entry online with an edited version on Netflix. Written and directed by Lorene Scafaria based on her personal experiences, this sitcom style film is a tearjerker that beautifully encapsulates grief, and coping with loss. Sarandon plays Marnie, an overbearing sixty-something mother, who has moved to Los Angeles from New Jersey for the purpose of being close to her daughter Lori (Rose Byrne). As the plot unveils itself, we see there is more to Marnie’s relocation across the coast than what meets the eye. Marnie is desperately trying to avoid processing the death of her husband Joe, who can only be seen in pictures, and their therapy-seeking screenwriter daughter Lori misses her dad very much too. While Marnie calls Lori more...

The team at Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will get a lot of mileage out of their tuxedos at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Michael Helfand and Joe Matukewicz, the division’s two co-heads, are hitting Canada with eight films in tow — a collection that includes Oscar-hopefuls such as “The Front Runner,” “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and “Wildlife.”
Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will focus on distributing these largely indie pictures in foreign territories. They usually leave the U.S. release to other studios. That may be part of the reason that, for all its activity, the division remains something of an enigma to most people.
“We’re a little under the radar,” said Matukewicz. “People sometimes don’t understand what we do because all our movies are different. No one is alike and we have a very diverse slate in terms of budget range or genres.”

This article marks Part 20 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her at the Academy Award, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
In 2015, more than a decade since their collaboration on “The Manchurian Candidate,” Meryl Streep and filmmaker Jonathan Demme reunited on what would prove the director’s final motion picture. “Ricki and the Flash”, written by another Oscar winner (Diablo Cody), cast Streep as a wannabe-rock star who abandoned her family to chase her dreams. She later returns home, hoping to reconcile, to a chilly reception.
While “Ricki and the Flash” has its passionate proponents, the film was greeted that August to a lukewarm critical reception and modest box office – Streep’s lowest-grossing live action feature in nearly a decade. Even more...

Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2013 breakout drama “Short Term 12” delivered a heartwarming story with bite. His portrait of a home for troubled teenagers owed much to Brie Larson, who played its passionate supervisor with a mixture of empathy and rage against the flaws of a system designed to improve young people’s lives. It delivered a sentimental message without trumping its characters’ palpable rage and cynicism, and established Cretton as a director capable of generating emotion without pandering.
Cretton still makes that effort with his long-awaited followup, “The Glass Castle,” but with less success. While he has a fascinating story and another stirring Larson performance, the results are minor and decidedly more middlebrow.
Adapted from Jeanette Walls’ memoir, Larson plays the author as she grows up in a wildly dysfunctional household headed by her alcoholic father Rex (Woody Harrelson), who forces the family to live a nomadic, hand-to-mouth existence in...

Specialty films these days range across more than core upscale urban and critically acclaimed quality fare. This weekend’s surprise: two foreign-language films placed second and third in the box office Top Ten.
The U.S./Mexican coproduction “How to Be a Latin Lover” (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ranked second with over $12 million from 1,118 theaters. Even more impressive, the Indian epic sequel “Baahubali 2: The Conclusion” (Great Indian) placed third with $10,138,000 in only 425 theaters. Both movies beat James Ponsoldt’s Dave Eggers novel adaption “The Circle” (Stx), starring Emma Watson and Tom Hanks, which opened to only $9.2 million in more than twice as many theaters.
(Read more in our Top Ten report.)
Among the specialty audience usual suspects, nothing managed to open with as much as a $10,000 per theater average. “Obit” (Kino Lorber) ranked highest, while Rami Malek-starrer “Buster’s Mal Heart” (Well Go USA) and “Natasha” (Menemsha) led the other New York openers.

Who doesn't love J.K. Simmons?
The character actor who most would recognize from having supporting roles in almost every movie, finally got the praise he deserved when he won as Oscar for his career defining role as a mean music teacher in Damien Chazelle's Whiplash.
This fall, Simmons co-stars alongside Ben Affleck in The Accountant. While he has risen to stardom, it was those small roles where he truly won our hearts, and we're looking back on our five favourites.
The Meddler
Playing the love interest to Rose Byrne's overbearing, recently widowed mother (Susan Sarandon), J.K. Simmons made us fall in love with him as well. Rarely portraying the romantic lead in a film, here this Harley Davidson riding adventurer had us at hello. He can be as charming as he can be mean, and...

During an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Simmons revealed that he has finished shooting his role in Justice League and that most of the scenes he shot were with Ben Affleck. He also had nothing but great things to say about director Zack Snyder:
"My part is done. They are filming that for basically most of 2016, so some of the superheroes are still at work in jolly old London, but I'm back home with my family."
When asked if most of his scenes were with Affleck, he said:
"Yeah, mostly with Ben. In this first installment of the Justice League, Commissioner Gordon is not a particularly sizable part.

Say what you will about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, but both movies had amazing casts. The same can obviously be said for Justice League, with one of the most exciting additions without a doubt Oscar winning actor J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) as Commissioner Jim Gordon.
During set visits earlier this year, reporters confirmed that he shares a scene with the Justice League, but in a new interview, Simmons confirmed that the majority of Gordon’s screentime is with Batman. That’s to be expected, especially as this movie likely sets the stage for him to return in Ben Affleck’s solo outing for the Caped Crusader.
“Yeah, mostly with Ben. In this first installment of the Justice League, Commissioner Gordon is not a particularly sizable part. We just kind of introduce him and see a little bit of his interactions with Batman — and with most of the Justice League.

For all intents and purposes, DC has already had two team-up films this year with both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. However, real team-up film fans are looking forward to most is next year's Justice League, which looks to unite the likes of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg for the first time on the big screen.
While the character list is sure to be long for this particular film, don't think that the actual superheroes are the only ones who'll be getting some love. In addition to the main six, we also know that Batman and co. will be interacting with the likes of Commissioner Gordon, the Bat's longtime ally within Gotham P.D., portrayed by Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons. It's a big role, to be sure, and coming off of Gary Oldman's amazing performance as the moral cop in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Trilogy,...

September marks the beginning of the fall movie season, and while that means critical darlings and awards contenders are on their way, it’d be a shame to overlook some of the most winning films that have already hit the big screen this year. One of those is Lorene Scafaria’s mother-daughter comedy “The Meddler,” which was an indie hit back in the spring but could stand to use a few more eyeballs. Starring Susan Sarandon in one of her best roles ever, the story concerns Marnie Minervini, a recent California transplant who has upended her own life to move closer to her daughter, who is dealing with her own big-time issues. J.K. Simmons and Rose Byrne co-star.
