Famous horror film and TV studio Blumhouse, which has released a slew of cult hits such as Paranormal Activity, The Black Phone, M3GAN and Five Nights at Freddy’s, is finally ready to stake its claim in the video game space after the studio’s announcement of its new games division last year.
Friday afternoon during the Summer Games Fest, Blumhouse Games, aimed at partnering with low-budget independent developers of horror games for console, PC and mobile devices, showcased the long-awaited sneak peek of what scares await players in the near future.

Five Nights at Freddy’s fans will have another title to sink their teeth into soon enough with Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit. Only this time around, developer/publisher Mega Cat Studios are doing things a little different than what we’ve come to expect from the series.
Revealed during the Guerrilla Collective Showcase, Into the Pit revolves around Oswald, who wishes that his town, and his life, weren’t so boring. That all changes when he explores the ball pit in a rundown pizzeria and finds himself in the past. However, as one might expect, Oswald will encounter something that will have him questioning his wish.
Rather than the usual gameplay from a Five Nights at Freddy’s title, Into the Pit instead is a full-on horror adventure. You’ll travel between time periods, gather clues, and obviously outrun the threat relentlessly hounding you. You’ll need to...

It has not been a particularly great year for horror movies theatrically. 2024 has been, to put it mildly, pretty rough at the box office overall, with the summer season suffering one disappointment after another. Smaller movies like "In a Violent Nature" are finding success right now, but Hollywood has yet to have a true horror movie breakout hit this year. However, amidst the rubble there is a pretty impressive success story in the form of "Tarot."
Released by Sony on May 3 right alongside Universal's splashy blockbuster "The Fall Guy" to kick off the summer season, "Tarot" opened to an unassuming $6.5 million, placing number four on the charts that weekend. That's not exactly a blockbuster debut, to put it lightly. But the studio was thrifty with this one, making it for just $8.5 million. More importantly, they were also very thrifty and targeted with the marketing spend, which has allowed the...

It hasn't been a good summer at the box office thus far (which might be the understatement of the year), and 2024 has left the industry at large with a lot of questions it needs to answer sooner rather than later. Be that as it may, we can always rely on horror, it seems, to pepper in some optimism. To that end, IFC's unrated slasher "In a Violent Nature" posted the company's second-best opening weekend over recently, adding to the studio's surprisingly good year.
With no new big releases hitting theaters in the post-Memorial Day frame, "The Garfield Movie" topped the charts with an anemic $14 million in an overall terrible weekend. But that left plenty of room for everything else, including "In a Violent Nature." Director Chris Nash's acclaimed, low-budget feature directorial debut made $2.1 million on just over 1,400 screens, placing number eight on the charts just behind Crunchyroll's...

Hit video game franchise Just Cause has gotten a new lease on life.
The video game from Square Enix and Avalanche Studios has landed at Universal Pictures with Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto set to helm the adaptation.
Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, the producing duo behind the studio’s The Fall Guy and Nobody, will produce through their 87North banner. The company has a first-look deal with Universal.
Also producing are Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson of Story Kitchen. The team is already involved in the video game space with adaptations of the Tomb Raider and Sonic the Hedgehog titles.
Since its 2006 debut, the video game puts players on deadly missions as Rico Rodriguez, an operative who is a regime change specialist. Armed with a grappling hook and wingsuit, he goes on race-against-time missions to stop The Black Hand, a lethal mercenary group.

To say that this Memorial Day weekend was a disappointment at the box office would be a grave understatement. Warner Bros. unleashed director George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" in theaters, while Sony Pictures released the family-friendly "The Garfield Movie." On paper, we had a much-anticipated (or so we thought) prequel to "Mad Max: Fury Road," which is one of the most beloved action movies of all time, as well as an animated movie that could get parents out of the house with their kids. In practice, we endured a truly sobering several days' worth of lousy ticket sales.
"Furiosa" topped the charts with a $26.3 million haul through Sunday, with that number growing to $32 million when accounting for the Monday holiday. "Garfield" came in a close second with $24 million over the weekend and $31.1 million through Monday. Both of those numbers were well below industry projections, with "Furiosa" failing...

It’s been almost ten years since The Hunger Games’ last installment hit the cinemas, but nobody from the main cast has been left in the shadows ever since.
Though Suzanne Collins’ widely famous franchise is expanding its universe and has recently got a brand new ramification titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the original movies are still a frequent binge-watch choice for many fans craving some nostalgia from the past years.
Back in the day, The Hunger Games was a huge success garnering more than $3 billion in total, and it definitely came as a big moment of fame for the franchise’s leading actors whose careers later on skyrocketed for good.
Years after the movie trilogy came to its end, all of them are still doing pretty good.

One of horror's most reliable franchises is coming back for a brand new installment next summer. While little has been revealed by way of specifics, Sony Pictures has dated "Insidious 6" for next summer. The film is now due to hit theaters on August 29, 2025, per Variety. Mark your calendars and plan accordingly, supernatural lovers of the world.
What's truly interesting is that this is just one of two new "Insidious" movies in the works at the moment. Sony and Blumhouse Productions are also collaborating on a spin-off titled "Thread: An Insidious Tale," which will star Mandy Moore ("47 Meters Down") and Kumail Nanjiani ("Eternals"). Jeremy Slater ("Moon Knight") set to write and direct. In short, the long-running franchise is expanding after taking a five-year break between 2018's "Insidious: The Last Key" and last year's "Insidious: The Red Door."
Dating back to director James Wan's original breakout hit "Insidious" in 2011, this franchise has been remarkably consistent.

The move was among a handful of key additions and changes Universal and prolific partner Blumhouse made to their 2025 theatrical calendar, including pushing back the release of M3GAN 2.0 by a month, from May 16 to June 27.
Previously, The Black Phone 2 was set to open on June 27, 2025. It will now go out months later on Oct. 17, 2025.
The Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel wasn’t the only pic getting a release date for the first time.
Blumhouse’s original horror-thriller The Woman in the Yard will open on March 28 of next year, followed quickly by Platinum Dunes and Blumhouse’s thriller Drop on April 22.

The only constant in life is change, folks. The best-laid plans end up having to be adjusted, external factors force even the wisest decision-makers to improvise on the fly, and, all the while, the ruthless film gods laugh at us from their ivory towers in the sky. Is this lede a tad melodramatic for what's nothing more than just another article about movie release dates jumping around? Probably, but we have to make sure you're all paying attention somehow!
Variety reports that Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions woke up today and apparently chose chaos, as the studios took a look at their big-screen horror offerings to come over the next year and change and shook things up significantly. While the new calendar shift affects quite a few titles, the three main ones that fans will undoubtedly want to keep an eye on include "Five Nights at Freddy's 2," "M3GAN 2.0," and "The Black Phone 2.

Blumhouse has announced a trio of upcoming horror movie release dates today, the first of which is the official date for the sequel to hit video game movie Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will release in theaters December 5, 2025.
Released in theaters and available for streaming on Peacock on the same day, the Emma Tammi-directed Five Night’s at Freddy’s was Blumhouse’s highest grossing movie of all time. In other words, it’s no surprise that the sequel was quickly greenlit.
In last year’s horror movie, “After accepting a security guard job from Steve, Mike (Josh Hutcherson; The Hunger Games Franchise) discovers an abandoned restaurant may actually be haunted by murderous animatronics.”
Two other upcoming Blumhouse sequels have also received new dates, with M3GAN 2.0 now coming to theaters on June 27, 2025, previously announced for May 16, 2025.

The popular video game Poppy Playtime is following in the footsteps of Five Nights at Freddy’s, THR reports, with Legendary Entertainment developing a movie adaptation.
“Beating out several competitive offers, Legendary has closed an aggressive deal with Mob Entertainment to develop and produce a live-action feature adaptation of Poppy Playtime, a horror video game featuring the toy-turned-monster,” the website reports.
The Hollywood Reporter reminds, “Featuring shades of Willy Wonka, Toy Story and Gremlins, the first person video game sees the player acting as a former employee of a faded toy brand who, thanks to a cryptic letter, is drawn back to an abandoned facility only to quickly discover it has become home to a host of toys, including Huggy Wuggy, Mommy Long Legs, and CatNap, that have taken on a life of their own. Players have to decipher clues, solve puzzles and use gadgets to unravel the mystery and get out alive.

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the most profitable box office blockbusters of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.
The list will contain a total of 10 titles and, as you will see, Disney falls short in this list (unlike the box office bombs list), but there are a lot of animated films there and quite a few surprises. This list doesn’t account for the total gross earnings of a movie but speaks about the profit made by the movie based on the budget and the earnings, which is a thing...

Universal and Illumination’s smash The Super Mario Bros Movie finishes No. 1 to make it a wrap on Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2023. While the industry is still coming out of Covid and the aftermath of the strikes, there’s no question about the major motion picture studios’ embrace of the theatrical downstream model; steamers such as Amazon and Apple realize the power of it too.
Last year’s wild ride saw the buckling of superhero movies, though Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse underscored fanboys’ hunger for something different in the genre. The year also showed that longtime box office emperor Disney can lose its clothes sometimes — in 2023 it was its overextension and hasty execution of IP Wish, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Haunted Mansion and The Marvels. Barbie and Oppenheimer, meanwhile, showed that perhaps the biggest box office weekends are best programmed with two tentpoles in the heart of summer.

2023 was not a good year for Disney at the box office. With the exception of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3, their films lost money according to Deadline’s”2023 Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament” list by Anthony D’Alessandro. ‘Guardians 3’ was just barely in the top 10 as it was in 9th place. To put this into perspective, tenth place was a “Paw Patrol” film.
In fact, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour movie beat all the Disney films and “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” which was released theatrically and on streaming simultaneously.
Four Disney films flopped, and ‘The Marvels’ was the biggest loser. Of the bottom five films, only’ The Flash’ was a non-Disney-owned film.
‘The Marvels’
According to Deadline’s estimates, the film lost $237 million, but that is after you add in home entertainment and TV/streaming numbers. That is a lot of money to lose! It would have been worse without Home video and TV/streaming revenue.

If you though Five Nights at Freddy's was fun but not too scary, we think we have a puppet horror movie that will make you want to rewatch the Josh Hutcherson movie just to calm yourself down.
A Shudder freshest original, this one has already tickled the nerves of moviegoers in February, collecting a modest box office of a little more than $800,000. The movie, titled Stopmotion, has drawn a very different reaction from critics and viewers: while the former were left in awe (proved by 90% on Tomatometer), the audience wasn't that impressed, giving it only 50%.
While Five Nights at Freddy's is an example of puppet horror movie that clearly enjoyed a more massive success, Stopmotion is your must-watch if you crave something way scarier and unsettling than just moderately scary animatronics in an abandoned pizza place.

“The Fall Guy” (Universal) opens in the U.S./Canada Friday — one of the most prestigious spots on the movie release calendar. Since “Iron Man” in 2008, and since Disney initiated the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2012, the first weekend in May has marked the start of the summer movie season.
When MCU “Deadpool & Wolverine” left this date in favor of July 26, Universal grabbed it — and the expectations that come with it. As a result, there’s an unusually wide range of estimates for the domestic opening weekend: We hear everything from the high 20s to over $50 million, with consensus closer to $35 million or a bit more.
An opening weekend of $35 million-$40 million would be a big improvement over a disastrous April (where “Civil War” was the sole film to debut over $25 million), but that would be only the fifth-best opening of 2024. Historically, this date tops any opening gross and usually...

Ahead of the series premiere of Cross, Prime Video is already prepping a second season of the drama based on the best-selling Alex Cross book series by James Patterson. Wes Chatham (Ahsoka), Matthew Lillard (Good Girls) and Jeanine Mason (Upload) are set to star opposite lead Aldis Hodge in Season 2 of the series, created, executive produced and showrun by Hand of God‘s Ben Watkins, sources tell Deadline. Prime Video declined comment but all three are believed to have one-year deals.
From Paramount Television Studios and Skydance Television, Cross is a twisted thriller about Alex Cross (Hodge), a detective and forensic psychologist, uniquely capable of digging into the psyches of killers and their victims, in order to identify — and ultimately capture — the murderers.
Mason is said to be playing Rebecca, a brilliant, ambitious and vengeful judge. Lillard is believed to be playing Lance, a ruthless, self-made business tycoon. Chatham plays Donnie,...

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

A concept for a talk show with horror guests that just makes so much sense! Fresh off of the release of Late Night with the Devil, I'm very excited that David Dastmalchian is continuing his hosting duties in Grave Conversations, a weekly talk show released every Wednesday on Instagram, where the interview is conducted from within their own caskets:
“Grave Conversations” promises viewers an unforgettable journey into the depths of human existence, while Dastmalchian guides his guests through discussions that delve into personal reflections on mortality, legacy, and the afterlife, all while lying down in Titan caskets. Episode one will feature actress Kate Siegel (“The Fall of the House of Usher”) with episode two bringing prolific filmmaker and showrunner Mike Flanagan, and lastly actor Matthew Lillard (“Five Nights at Freddy’s”) joins Dastmalchian for his time, in the casket.

“Scary Movie,” the early-aughts comedy series that lampooned horror movies like “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” is getting rebooted.
Paramount Pictures announced that it is partnering with “Fast and Furious” mega-producer Neal H. Moritz to resurrect the dormant franchise. “Scary Movie” is going into production in the fall of 2024, and should hit theaters in 2025. The series spawned five previous films before running out of gas with the 2013 installment. But horror has continued to be a major force at the box office, with movies like “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “Smile” and “M3GAN” drawing big crowds. So there’s a lot of new material for the “Scary Movie” team to parody.
“Scary Movie” is also being made as part of the Paramount’s first look partnership with Miramax, the studio behind the film franchise. Miramax will fully finance the production, with Paramount handling distribution. The indie label is...

Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

Horror hit Five Nights At Freddy’s is getting its sequel towards the end of 2025: more on the story here.
The critical response to the Five Nights At Freddy’s film that arrived last year? Well, it was pretty much on the piss poor side. The awards cabinet for it? Pretty much empty. The audience response? Better. The box office? Very nice, thank you very much.
With that in mind, it was confirmed pretty quickly that we were going to be getting a Five Nights At Freddy’s 2 movie, and as it turns out, we’re going to be getting it really rather quickly too.
It’s been confirmed overnight that Universal has given the movie an autumn 2025 release slot. We’ve not got a specific release date at the moment, but it seems all but certain that Universal is going to pick a day in October of 2025 to unleash the movie.

We've got a huge and exciting news announcement to make fresh out of CinemaCon 2024, the highly-anticipated sequel to "Five Nights at Freddy's" will be heading to theaters in 2025. /Film's own Ryan Scott was in attendance when Universal made the announcement, a shocker to absolutely no one considering Blumhouse and Universal were fast-tracking a sequel to Emma Tammi's film adaptation of Scott Cawthon's impossibly popular video game franchise of the same name before the animatronic murder machines had a chance to recharge.
The decision was a result of the film's astronomically huge success at the box office, outperforming every other horror release of 2023, including Blumhouse and Universal's massive legacy film, "The Exorcist: Believer." What's even wilder is that "FNaF" went day-and-date with a streaming release on Peacock, meaning audiences had the opportunity to stay at home and scare themselves silly without having to dig into their pockets for tickets,...

It may have taken forever for the first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie to finally get off the ground, but it’s officially full steam ahead for the sequel.
Expect to see Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 next Halloween season, as it’s currently set for Fall 2025 release.

Is it time for six nights at Freddy’s? A sequel to horror hit Five Nights at Freddy‘s is in the works, Universal revealed at CinemaCon Wednesday.
The first film was a surprise sensation that weathered poor reviews and a day-and-date release on Peacock to land Blumhouse’s top opening of all time with $78 million. The feature from director Emma Tammi was based on the video game and counted creator Scott Cawthon as its screenwriter. It centered on a security guard played by Josh Hutcherson, who took a job at a pizzeria with murderous animatronic animals.
Tammi previously told The Hollywood Reporter of a potential sequel: “We have some loose ends that I think are going to have to come back in a sequel to be tied up.”

Get ready for more Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” a horror-thriller set a haunted Chuck E. Cheese-esque establishment, is getting a sequel in the fall of 2025. Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, which backed the first film, confirmed the news at CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas. But they didn’t share an exact release date, plot details or returning cast members for the follow-up.
Adapted from the popular video game, last October’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” made a killing at the box office with $297 million globally and became Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film of all time. Those ticket sales were especially impressive because the low-budget film was saddled with terrible reviews and it landed simultaneously on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal.

Turn on the security cameras, because Freddy Fazbear is on the loose again. “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” one of 2023’s most unexpected box-office sensation, is getting a sequel from Universal Pictures and Blumhouse.
Jim Orr, Universal Pictures President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution, announced the news on Wednesday, during the company’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas. No other news about the film — such as a release window, creative team, or cast — was unveiled.
The announcement comes six months after “Five Nights at Freddy’s” became a hit at the October box office, where it grossed $297.2 million on a mere $20 million budget. A sequel film was probably greenlit by Act 3 of the first one.
The success of the film, an adaptation of the viral indie horror video game franchise by Scott Cawthon, was especially impressive given Universal’s decision to release it simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service Peacock. The...

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2023. It has been updated to coincide with the release of “Fallout” on Amazon Prime Video.]
Every year, gamers ask themselves: Is this the year video game movies finally gain some respect? And the answer in the year 2024 might, actually, be yes.
No, none of the three video game adaptations that came out this year have been outright critical successes. Quite the opposite, actually: critics saw “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as unremarkable and mediocre, “Gran Turismo” as a glorified advertisement, and “Five Nights as Freddy’s” as a complete borefest. But the movies all performed respectably at the box office, with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” becoming the second-highest grossing film of the year, and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” smashing expectations to become one of the year’s biggest horror movies. These successes all affirm that, for better or worse, video game movies are hot right now. And with a new “Sonic the Hedgehog” film and “Borderlands” coming out this year,...

Horror maestro Jason Blum is reviving “The Blair Witch Project” for Lionsgate.
It’s a fitting pair because Blumhouse is known for its low-budget approach to terror. And the original “Blair Witch Project” had such a minuscule price tag it became one of the most profitable movies ever. Blumhouse is behind the skin-crawling “Paranormal Activity” and “The Purge” franchises, as well as newer breakout hits like “M3GAN” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” Blumhouse movies have generated nearly $6 billion at the worldwide box office — and that’s without spending all that much on production costs.
The announcement was made at CinemaCon, the annual movie theater trade show that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas. This film marks the first in a multi-picture agreement with Blumhouse reimagining horror classics for Lionsgate. Blumhouse, which has a first-look deal with Universal Pictures, recently collaborated with Lionsgate on “Imaginary,” a thriller about a sinister teddy bear from childhood.
