Luckily, Tori was cast in some of her father’s shows, most notably 90210 but after she used a fake name so there would be no nepotism. Drew Barrymore is reflecting back on 20th Century Fox’s initial reaction to Never Been Kissed.
The actress-producer and talk-show host was joined by Hey, Dude…The ’90s Called! hosts Christine Taylor and David Lascher on Friday’s Drew Barrymore Show, where she recalled how the rom-com marked a big milestone for the actress, as it was the first project made under her own production company, Flower Films.
With her venture behind the camera while also being the film’s star, there was a lot of pressure on Barrymore for the film to succeed.
“Never Been Kissed was very interesting because it was our first official film for Flower Films. And at that time, people were very weary of actors being producers,” she explained. “A lot of it wasn’t necessarily working and it didn’t mean because you’re an actor, you knew how to produce a film and it was about the economics.

Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

Lucy Liu Doesn’t Think ‘Charlie’s Angels 3’ Will Ever Get Made: ‘I Will Be Shocked if That Happened’
Two of Lucy Liu’s most popular films are 2000’s “Charlie’s Angels” and 2003’s “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” in which she starred alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore as the titular trio. But Liu revealed at the Variety Studio presented by Audible that it’s unlikely a third chapter will ever happen — despite Diaz’s recent return to acting after a long hiatus.
“I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible,” she said. “There have been so many iterations, even after the fact … In some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it. Times have changed so much since then.

Dynasty had the good fortune of premiering as Dallas had triggered a resurgence in the evening soap opera television genre. Premiering in January 1981 — just a few months after the “Who Shot J.R.?” cliffhanger was resolved — the show wound up lasting nine seasons, produced 220 episodes, and even spawned a spinoff series. John Forsythe was the show’s anchor — as oil magnate Blake Carrington, he was the only actor to appear in every single episode of the show’s run. While Forsythe had been around Hollywood since the 1940s and had experienced great success as the voice of “Charlie” on Charlie’s Angels. Before his death in 2010 we spoke with Forsythe several times over the years and even with all of his Hollywood experience, he told us he couldn’t believe how successful Dynasty would become. Angelina Jolie had the opportunity to star alongside the likes of Cameron Diaz in 2000’s Charlie’s Angels. But she rejected it for another project, even though she was told the film would boost her career.
Why Angelina Jolie rejected ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Angelina Jolie | Frazer Harrison/Getty Images
Jolie was already on the rise when Charlie’s Angels was in development. Movies like The Bone Collector and Girl,Interrupted were increasing her star-power. Winning an Oscar would only further establish Jolie as an A-Lister. She had the opportunity to add another commercial project to her name with Charlie’s Angels.
The feature already had a star-studded roster that included Lucy Liu, Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. Given Jolie’s own status at the time, she might have fit right in with the cast. The studio behind Charlie’s Angels believed so too, and tried to recruit the actor.

Narrowing down the best movies in any genre is tough, but for lesbian films you have to begin with a reductive question: What is a lesbian film? What, in fact, is a lesbian?.
Must the film focus primarily on a gay storyline, or can it feature strong lesbian characters doing something entirely different than just being lesbians? Is subtext enough, or must the sapphic be explicit? How much cinephile wrath will rain down on us for the absence of a certain recent Oscar winner?
Compared to the stand-outs of queer television, the best lesbian movies have relatively little time to convey their perspective on the vast, varied, (sometimes) vaginal lesbian experience. And yet, ultimately, the best lesbian films honor not just their own perspectives, but also the glory and traditions of all of queer cinema. Strong women, high entertainment value, and bold visuals reign supreme.

In the early days of television, the “Big Three” networks ruled the small screen. ABC is the baby, entering the new medium a little behind its competitors, and finding new and creative ways to find success against two mighty opponents.
ABC found its earliest success with two programs that had begun on radio, “The Lone Ranger,” which was the network’s first big hit, and “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet,” a sitcom loosely based on the life of the real-life Nelson family. The latter remained on the air for 14 seasons, and was the longest-running prime-time comedy for decades, and the longest-running live action sitcom until 2021. However, ABC still struggled against the firmly established NBC and CBS, and found innovative ways to compete.
In 1954, ABC and Walt Disney struck an unprecedented deal: the network helped finance the filmmaker’s ambitious Disneyland Park, while Disney produced a weekly TV show for the network.

The ongoing writer's strike in Hollywood has officially impacted "The MTV Movie & TV Awards." The awards show is set to take place this weekend and was set to be hosted by Drew Barrymore. However, the "Charlie's Angels" and "Scream" star has opted to drop out of the hosting gig as a show of solidarity with the Writers Guild of America.
According to Variety, the awards ceremony is still going to take place Sunday night. Rather than attempt to replace "The Drew Barrymore Show" host at the 11th hour, MTV intends to proceed without a host at all, although Barrymore has agreed to host next year's event as a show of good faith. Barrymore had this to say about it in a statement:
"I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the 'MTV Movie & TV Awards' live in solidarity with the strike.

When Chukwudi Iwuji was a kid growing up in Nigeria and Ethiopia, he imagined he could fly.
The second youngest of five, he would spend hours on his own, meticulously reenacting scenes he’d seen on TV, playing every part himself. Virtually all of what captured his imagination were American shows and films from the 1970s and ’80s: “Charlie’s Angels,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” “The Godfather” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” via broadcast reruns and bootleg VHS tapes. After he first saw “Star Wars,” he would stare intensely at a plastic cup, willing it to move. And “Superman,” of course, convinced Iwuji he could leap tall buildings in a single bound.
“I would actually run around the compound as fast as I could, hoping to get fast enough to take off,” he says with a wide and wistful grin. “I guess I was always going to be an actor.

Vigilante Shanty: Kooky Becomes Dupieux in Latest Whimsy
Quentin Dupieux’s penchant for absurdity shows no signs of abating, with Smoking Causes Coughing, the latest offering of his perennial output, perhaps being his most unruly film yet. Like the bombed out remnants of a hokey children’s television show dangled upon Dupieux’s favored adult repressions and anxieties, there’s much to enjoy in this compounded scenario of stories even when it has the tendency to flatline. Unfortunately, there’s nothing truly substantive lurking behind its cheesy, plastic exteriors.
It’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers meets Charlie’s Angels meets a children’s anti-smoking campaign, but Smoking Causes Coughing never really ascends to the pinnacle of these possibilities, if mostly because we spend a bit too much time with the rather unalluring members of Tobacco Force.…...

Although Cameron Diaz came out of retirement for the action-comedy Back in Action, she may be back out of action soon enough, as sources are suggesting her latest movie could be her last.
According to a source, Cameron Diaz may have stepped back onto the movie set a little too soon, even after not being on the big screen for nearly a decade. “These back-to-back 10-hour workdays have been a lot on her and she hates being away from [daughter] Raddix…Cameron loves being a mom more than anything in the world.”
Now 50, Diaz hasn’t appeared in a movie since 2014, when she starred in Annie, The Other Woman and Sex Tape. Cameron Diaz previously discussed her retirement (which she announced in 2018), saying she wanted to have more control of her life, saying, “When you do something at a really high level for a long period of time, other parts of...

Djimon Hounsou is opening up about the difficulties he’s faced landing roles post-Oscar nominations.
While speaking with The Guardian in an interview published online Thursday, the Shazam! Fury of the Gods actor, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2002 for In America and then again in 2006 for Blood Diamond, said he “felt seriously cheated.”
“Today, we talk so much about the Oscars being so white, but I remember there was a time where I had no support at all: no support from my own people, no support from the media, from the industry itself,” he confessed. “It felt like: ‘You should be happy that you’ve got nominated,’ and that’s that.”
Hounsou started to make his name in Hollywood when he landed a role in Steven Spielberg’s 1997 film Amistad. But he explained that he started to grow frustrated with the limited parts that were being offered to Black actors.

The Irish accent is consistently voted one of the most attractive in the world, yet even some of the world’s finest actors have trouble with it. Leonardo DiCaprio tried, as did Julia Roberts (twice), and dare we even mention Brad Pitt?
Today (17 March) marks St Patrick’s Day, and if you have no pub and/or beer plans, why not experience the next best thing: reminiscing about the wonkiest Irish accents in film history.
Relatively new to this great lineage of bad accents is Wild Mountain Thyme, a romantic drama released in the UK in early 2021 and so inexplicable that even literal Irish actors seemed to speak with fake Irish accents in it.
Such is the evil power of this particular bit of fakery, though – Hollywood’s bastardised visions of Ireland so all-encompassing and destructive that few can survive it.

Drew Barrymore is proving to Hugh Grant just what her voice can do after he jokingly called her singing “horrendous.”
During a Wired video interview posted Monday, where he answers “the web’s most-searched questions,” the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves actor was asked, “Does Hugh Grant actually sing in Music and Lyrics?” He responded that he does, but he’s “auto-tuned beyond belief. Actually, that’s not true. I’m auto-tuned a bit, but not as much as some.”
While laughing, the actor went on to say that Barrymore, who starred opposite him in the 2007 rom-com, wouldn’t mind him saying that “her singing is just horrendous” in the film.
The Marc Lawrence-directed film follows former music superstar Alex Fletcher (Grant) who gets an opportunity at a career comeback when he’s asked to write a song for teen sensation Cora Corman (Haley Bennett). The only problem is he can’t compose lyrics,...

Speaking with The Cut about the opportunity to star in a superhero movie, the actress said she wished she could have starred in one in her 20s.
“If it had happened earlier, it would have been miraculous,” Liu said. “It would have been a different story; my career would have been easier. There would have been more opportunity.”
Unfortunately, those superhero roles didn’t exist for Asian-Ameican actresses at the time, though playing Alex Munday in the “Charlie’s Angels” films in the early ’00s opposite Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore was something of a game-changer.

Depeche Mode, the pioneering ‘80s U.K. technopop band, has long had a strong following in Los Angeles — thanks to their exposure on local alternative stalwart Kroq — and now they’re proving a favorite of film and TV creative executives.
The group, consisting of co-founders Martin Gore and vocalist Dave Gahan after the death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher in May 2022, is on a roll following its 2020 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they were introduced by Charlize Theron, who called them “the soundtrack of my life.”
Depeche Mode’s new Mute/Columbia Records album, “Memento Mori,” comes out March 24, their first since 2017’s “Spirit” and 15th overall, which will be followed by a year-long tour that launches March 23 in Sacramento and includes a show at L.A.’s Kia Forum on March 28 and four concluding area shows in December, two apiece at Kia and Crypto.com Arena.

Forget Leonardo DiCaprio crawling on all fours in The Wolf of Wall Street; the funniest portrayal of drugs on film is an American black bear throwing famed character actor Margo Martindale from an out-of-control ambulance before hoovering up a mountain of blow. Within the space of a week, Elizabeth Banks’s comedy horror film Cocaine Bear has rampaged, gakked-up and bug-eyed, into the annals of drug-movie classics. And, if we’re being frank, it’s mostly because of the film’s title.
“We were definitely expecting a lot of resistance to the title,” says producer Chris Miller, who with his partner Phil Lord has helped shepherd into cinemas high-concept features such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Lego Movie for more than a decade. “We were expecting a call at some point telling us that we couldn’t actually call it Cocaine Bear – it’d have to be ‘The...

Season 2 of HBO's "Perry Mason" is set to premiere in mere days, and has gotten strong reviews (including from /Film's Chris Evangelista) as being a slick and stylish follow up to the episodes that came before it. The show takes place in 1930s Los Angeles and stars Matthew Rhys as the titular character, a relatively new lawyer that is flawed in all kinds of ways.
I had the chance to talk with Rhys in the lead up to the season's premiere about what it was like for him to come back to the role after a multi-year hiatus. "Mason is having this crisis of faith to do with his own imposter syndrome. And he's not sure whether he wants to be doing it, whether he's qualified enough to be doing it," Rhys told me about his character. He added later on that the upcoming episodes "takes us in a direction I wasn't expecting,...

Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler will soon be seen “Shazam! Fury of the Gods”, in which the two portray villainous sisters Hespera and Kalypso, daughters of Atlas, one of the legendary Titans of mythological lore.
The actresses recently spoke with Et Canada’s Sangita Patel about joining the “Shazam!” franchise, and spoke about how much they enjoyed working together.
As Mirren shared, big-budget superhero movies “are such fun. And when you’re working with, you know, women like these, it’s just pure fun, really.”

For Liu, the experience of playing sisters was markedly different from what she experienced with “Charlie’s Angels”.

Fans of NCIS surely are feeling a bit of déjà vu, Boo-Boo, with all the buzz surrounding the Cocaine Bear horror comedy now in theaters. Here’s how to check out the CBS drama’s October 2022 take on the coked-up creature.
Inspired by the 1985 true story of “a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it,” the Cocaine Bear movie follows a group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where “a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow…...

The really good news this weekend — two new openings combined grossing close to double their expectations — counterbalanced the grim result of a Marvel release collapsing in its second weekend.
“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (Disney) retained its #1 position the second weekend but with a 70 percent drop — the biggest fall ever for a Marvel title from the studio. “Black Widow” at 68 percent was the previous worst decrease (it also had PVOD access on Disney+). It’s slightly worse than “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” which, at the time, felt like a bad omen for that Warner Bros. franchise.
It’s a warning sign, though hardly suggestive of any imminent danger, that theaters can’t assume franchise/comic book movies will always sustain box office. That’s why when two much lower budget titles — both originals, both with less than guaranteed results — do quite well, it establishes that there are alternatives to comic book universe sequels.
