“Sex Education” star Mimi Keene has signed with UTA in all areas.
Keene stars in Netflix comedy “Sex Education” as Ruby Matthews opposite Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson and new “Doctor Who” star Ncuti Gatwa. Keene’s Ruby is one of the main characters on the show, and rules over fictional high school Moordale with an iron fist, but goes on a journey in the show’s later seasons, eventually striking up a relationship with Butterfield’s Otis Milburn.
“Sex Education,” one of Netflix’s biggest shows out of the U.K. and a global hit for the SVOD, has completed three seasons and has been greenlit for Season 4, with production expected to begin next month.
Trained at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, Keene got her start on the stage, making her debut as Janey in E.V. Crowe’s play “Kin” at the prestigious Royal Court Theatre.

Belgian filmmaker Lukas Dhont made a splash at Cannes with his first feature, the 2018 transgender ballet drama “Girl.” The film picked up the coveted Camera d’Or award for best debut feature, along with the Queer Palm for best LGBTQ film and a number of other accolades (and controversy). So expectations were inevitably high for his second film, “Close,” which premieres in competition at the festival this week.
The film, which tells the story of two boys developing an intimate childhood friendship, was directed by Dhont from a script he wrote with Angelo Tijssens. It stars Eden Dambrine, Gustav De Waele, Emilie Dequenne, Léa Drucker, Kevin Janssens, Marc Weiss, Igor Van Dessel, and Léon Bataille.
The official synopsis for “Close” reads: “The intense friendship between two 13-year-old boys Leo and Remi suddenly gets disrupted. Struggling to understand what has happened, Leo approaches Sophie, Remi’s mother. ‘Close’ is a film about friendship and responsibility.

Lukas Dhont’s Cannes debut was also his debut feature, Girl, which ran in Un Certain Regard in 2018. A stunning start for the young Belgian, the movie brought him the Caméra d’Or and myriad other prizes down the line. Now, four years later, Dhont is returning to Cannes with his follow-up, Close, which has landed him in the main competition.
“It feels unbelievable,” Dhont says of graduating to the Lumière theater. “Of course, we had an amazing journey with Girl, but we feel Close is more personal and universal.” It’s also a little nerve-rattling. “It’s such a personal film to me that sharing it at that scale is something.”
Close is centered on two 13-year-old boys who have been friends forever. That close friendship is disrupted when something happens in their lives that changes the course of it. Dhont describes the movie as being about “the deep...

Berlinale Talents Alumni Prepare to Shine in Cannes
It’s slowly edging towards summer here in Berlin and that means one thing: Cannes is close! And as the sun gets ever brighter, many of Berlinale’s former Talents are also preparing to dazzle on the Croisette!
Three alumni are starring in films in Competition; Sherwan Haji in Tarik Saleh’s Boy from Heaven, Sara Fazilat in Ali Abbasi’s Holy Spider, which was produced by Sol Bondy and Jacob Jarek, and finally Nadia Litz joins the glittering cast of David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future. Also in Competition is Lukas Dhont’s Close, co-written by Angelo Tijssens. Un Certain Regard provides a stage for more Talents to shine, with 17 alumni involved in 9 films, including Ariel Escalante’s Domingo y la niebla, to name one example. The film was edited by Lorenzo Mora Salazar, music composed by Alberto Torres, with Nicolás Wong Díaz acting as both producer & cinematographer. Abinash Bikram Shah’s Lori screens in the Short Films Competition, alongside two films with Zuolong Shan as executive producer, Bi Gan’s A Short Story and Story Chen’s The Water Murmurs.
Critic’s Week features 11 former Talents who have contributed their creativity to 8 films in the selection. The Woodcutter Story was in fact developed at our Script Station by writer and director Mikko Myllylahti, edited by Jussi Rautaniemi and produced by Jussi Rantamäki, the short Cuerdas was shot by Lara Vilanova and there will also be a special screeing of Goutte d’Or, produced by Jean-Christophe Reymond.
Excitingly, the Director’s Fortnight will show the debut feature films of three Talents alumni: Manuela Martelli’s 1976, edited by Camila Mercadal and produced by Dominga Sotomayor, Elena López Riera’s El agua and Pamfir by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk. Included in the selection is Un Varón by Fabian Hernández, which Louise Bellicaud produced.

The 17th edition of Talents Buenos Aires took place from April 19–23. Borrowing from Luis López Carrasco’s film of the same name, this year’s theme was ‘The Year of Discovery’. Drawing inspiration from the film’s exploration of Spain’s political and social crisis in the early 1990s, the programme’s aim was to promote critical and aesthetic thinking regarding recent world events and their influence on the film world. It was an engaging 5 days of events for the 55 Talents from all over South America, from workshops on non-traditional distribution with Maui Alena or on acting with Maria Laura Berch, to a dialogue on cinema as discovery with Darío Aguirre, and plenty of networking sessions. Welcome to the skilled film professionals who are now part of the Talents family, and congratulations to the team of Talents Buenos Aires on another great edition.
The preparations for Talents Guadalajara in June, Talents Durban in July and Talents Sarajevo in August are currently in full swing, and further out on the horizon, the 13th Talents Tokyo will be held from October 31 to November 5 within the Tokyo FILMeX Festival 2022.
Thanks for staying tuned and catching up!

It’s always a joy when a new film by Japanese director Naoko Ogigami is released. After “Close-Knit”, awarded at the Berlinale, “Riverside Mukolitta” (Kawapperi Mukolitta) is her latest feature, a film adapted from a novel written by Ogigami herself.
“Riverside Mukolitta” is screening at Helsinki Cine Aasia
Takeshi Yamada (Kenichi Matsuyama) is a lonely young man who arrives, penniless and looking desolate, in the coastal town of Toyama, to work at a shiokara (salted squid) factory. We don’t know at this point why Yamada is there or anything about his past, but factory CEO Sawada (Naoto Ogata) who knows everything, gives him a warm welcome and sends him to Shiori Minami (Hikari Mitsushima) who will be able to find him a cheap accommodation. In fact, landlady Shiori, a young widow with a daughter, lets a 50-year-old flat to Yamada for a good price, part of the small compound called Mukolitta Apartments,...

The 2022 Cannes Film Festival has revealed its competition jury, with “Titane” and “Fire” star Vincent Lindon presiding as President of the Jury to mark the 75th anniversary of the festival.
Lindon is the first French actor to be Jury President in over a decade, since Isabelle Huppert helmed the jury in 2009. In the history of the Festival, French celebrities have often held this role in an anniversary year, such as Yves Montand in 1987 for the 40th Festival, Gérard Depardieu in 1993 for the 45th Festival, and Isabelle Adjani in 1997 for the 50th.
The festival is set to take place May 17 through May 28, resuming in-person festivities for the second year in a row after last year’s return to normal (albeit two months later than usual).
Rebecca Hall, Deepika Padukone, Noomi Rapace, Asghar Farhadi, Ladj Ly, Jeff Nichols, and Joachim Trier also serve as jury members.

Cinephiles were drooling early Thursday morning over what was cooking at Cannes. Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux unleashed the competition and out-of-competition slate for 2022, and it is très formidable.
Eighteen movies from across the globe will compete for the Palme D’or. (Don’t be surprised if another title slips in between now and opening night; last-minute additions are common occurrences.) The big guns are as follows:
David Cronenberg will make his return to whacked-out weirdo body horror with “Crimes of the Future.” After last year’s win for “Titane,” don’t count this one out for the top prize. The film stars Cronenberg vet Viggo Mortensen plus Léa Seydoux (a Cannes regular who had to skip last summer’s fest after testing positive for Covid) and Kristen Stewart. Not much is known about the picture, other than it shares a title with a one-hour feature with non-synchronous sound...

The 2022 Cannes Film Festival announced its 75th anniversary lineup on Thursday morning in Paris, with films selected for the prestigious festival including “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” George Miller’s first film since “Mad Max: Fury Road”; “Showing Up,” which finds indie director Kelly Reichardt reuniting with her “Wendy and Lucy” and “Certain Women” star Michelle Williams; and “Crimes of the Future,” a reportedly disturbing David Cronenberg drama whose cast includes Kristen Stewart, Lea Seydoux and Viggo Mortensen, who starred in three Cronenberg films between 2005 and 2011, including “A History of Violence” and “Eastern Promises.”
Other films include two music documentaries: “Trouble in Mind,” a Jerry Lee Lewis film by Ethan Coen, and “Moonage Daydream,” an authorized David Bowie work by Brett Morgen.

During the pandemic, no major film festival was all shook up more than Cannes, forced to cancel the 2019 event and shifting dates to mid-summer for an overstocked comeback event the following year. Now, this all-important showcase for global art cinema looks to be finding its feet again, thanks to a diverse lineup that includes everything from Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” to the directorial debut of his granddaughter, Riley Keough, whose “Beast” (co-directed by Gina Gammell) is set on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Sounding optimistic at the press conference on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, artistic director Thierry Frémaux announced new films from George Miller (“Three Thousand Years of Longing”), David Cronenberg (“Crimes of the Future”), Kelly Reichardt (”Showing Up”) and James Gray (“Armageddon Time”) in the official selection.

The Prince, a biting look at the British royals through the eyes of Prince George, the youngest heir to the throne (voiced by series creator Gary Janetti), has drawn criticism for satirizing the royal children and especially its take on 8-year-old Prince George, who is portrayed as entitled and conniving.
Additionally, the series’ planned late-spring launch was delayed following Prince Philip’s April 9 death at the age of 99. The animated comedy’s 12 episodes were ultimately dropped at once with little fanfare in July. There are no plans for the series to be shopped elsewhere by 20th TV Animation.

Douglas Trumbull, the legendary special effects master who helped create the worlds of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Blade Runner and Star Trek: The Motion Picture has died, according to a social media post from his daughter, Amy Trumbull. He was 79.
Trumbull developed the slit-scan photography process that was used in the “Star Gate” sequence of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi classic. “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time,” he later said. “We were struggling with the Star Gate. Nobody knew what a Star Gate was, but I came up with some ideas that I didn’t even know at the time were based on some things I was learning as a young guy about street photography and weird photographic techniques.”

Raise a glass of Mountain Dew to Yuh-Jung Youn.
The celebrated Korean actress won an Oscar on Sunday night for her supporting role in “Minari,” Lee Isaac Chung’s semi-autobiographical drama about a family that relocates to rural Arkansas in the 1980s to start a farm. Youn made history as only the second Asian woman and first Korean to win an acting prize at the Oscars.
Accepting the award, from Brad Pitt, whose company Plan B was a producer on “Minari,” Youn began her speech by playfully calling out Pitt’s absence on set. “Finally,” she said. “It’s an honor to meet you.”
Injecting some much-needed humor into the three-hour-long ceremony, Youn doled out several other jabs in her speech. “I cannot believe I’m here,” she said. “Ok. Let me pull myself together.”

Following 2017’s “Las Cinéphilas,” about retired women who go to the cinema every day, and this year’s “Le Temps Perdu,” which just had its world premiere in IDFA’s feature-length documentary competition, Argentinian director Maria Alvarez is already developing the third part of her trilogy focusing on elderly people.
In “Close” (“Las Cercanas”), which will see her reunite with producer Tirso Diaz-Jares, she will focus on the Cavallini sisters: identical twins now in their nineties. She admits that the trilogy wasn’t exactly planned. “I was writing a fiction film about my sister and me,” Alvarez tells Variety. “One day I noticed these two ladies. Months later, I saw them again. I discovered they were twins, and that they never married or had kids because of their decision to perform together as pianists. They lived in a small Buenos Aires apartment, with their piano, and I realized that reality has surpassed fiction.

There is a new Best Supporting Actress Oscar front-runner — just barely. “Mank” star Amanda Seyfried has dethroned “The Father’s” Olivia Colman from the top perch in our odds.
At the moment, both have 4/1 odds, but Seyfried is slightly ahead due to her overall placements. How it breaks down shows open this race is: Colman has more support from our Experts (seven to six) and Editors (four to two), while Seyfried is the choice of 15 of our top 24 users to just three for Colman.
This is the second lead change in two weeks in this category. Glenn Close was in front all season long until, um, less-than-stellar reviews dropped for “Hillbilly Elegy” on Nov. 10. The seven-time nominee soon fell to second, behind Colman, and is now in third at 5/1 odds, just barely above another veteran, Ellen Burstyn (“Pieces of a Woman”). “Minari’s” Youn Yuh-jung is in fifth. Warner Bros Television Group on Tuesday revealed the 12 directors selected for the 2020 Warner Bros Television Directors’ Workshop, which will be held virtually this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The redesigned program has been condensed into two weeks (from the usual nine) of online learning, with lectures led by co-teachers Bethany Rooney and Mary Lou Belli along with various showrunners, directors, cinematographers and editors. Due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on Hollywood, there’s likely to be a shortage of new movies to fill all of the available release slots at theaters for the remainder of 2020. But that doesn’t mean cinemagoers won’t have much to see on the big screen. Thanks to the folks at Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies, 11 all-time classic films from yesteryear are winging their way back to participating theaters.
The TCM Big Screen Classics series is scheduled to begin on July 19th with the re-release of 1990’s Ghost, giving fans another chance to see supernatural romance and sexy pottery. This will be followed by The Blues Brothers on July 26th, before Babe kicks off the following month’s offerings on August 9th.
The program is a varied one and there’s a little something for everyone. Most of the major genres are well represented, with...
