At this month’s Cannes Film Festival, Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner each unveiled passion projects they opted to finance themselves after institutional backers initially passed. This week, three auteurs make a trend — except instead of putting his own funds toward a deeply personal, sweeping epic, comedian Shane Gillis has made a lewd, bro-y workplace comedy set at a Pennsylvania tire shop.
Since getting fired from “Saturday Night Live” — before he’d even started — for offensive jokes on his podcast, Gillis has become the poster child for a decentralized, grassroots attention economy that allows some entertainers to build thriving careers without gatekeepers’ blessings. His 2021 special “Live in Austin” blew up on YouTube; the same podcast that cost him “SNL,” co-hosted with fellow comic Matt McCusker, continues apace; Gillis even self-produced his own sketch comedy series, “Gilly and Keeves,” which culminated with a feature-length special last year. Following his 2015 Emmy win for the final season of “Mad Men,” Jon Hamm took a large step back from TV stardom in order to beef up his film resume with titles such as “Baby Driver,” “Richard Jewell,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Now that he has made a splashy return to the small screen by playing new roles on “Fargo” and “The Morning Show” and reprising one on “Good Omens,” his Emmy nominations total could instantly rise from 16 to 19. If all of his possible 2024 bids come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.
Hamm’s string of recent TV acting gigs began last July when he returned for season two Prime Video’s “Good Omens” as supporting character Gabriel – a humanoid version of the biblical archangel. He then fulfilled the new role of ambitious tech billionaire Paul Marks...

Nine years after he won his fourth and final acting Emmy for playing Walter White on “Breaking Bad,” Bryan Cranston has a solid shot at triumphing in the corresponding Best Drama Guest Actor category for reprising the role on the prequel series “Better Call Saul” on AMC. In fact, he has three chances to win at least his fifth acting Emmy this year since he could also earn notices for Best Movie/Limited Actor for Paramount Plus’ “Jerry and Marge Go Large” and for Best Drama Actor for Showtime’s “Your Honor.” If all three nominations come to fruition, he will be only the fourth person and second man to ever compete for three acting Emmys at once.

Cherry Jones could score three Emmy nominations this year for her supporting turn on the Apple TV+ limited series “Five Days at Memorial” and her guest appearances on “Poker Face” and “Succession.” It’s those double guest bids, though, that would put her in rarefied air as the three-time Emmy winner would become the 11th person to earn drama and comedy guest acting nominations in the same year.
Since the guest categories as we know them were standardized in 1989, 10 people have pulled off this feat. Jack Gilford was the first, getting shortlisted that very year for “The Golden Girls” and “thirtysomething.” In 1991, Colleen Dewhurst won comedy guest actress for “Murphy Brown” and was nominated in drama for “Road to Avonlea.” Gwen Verdon snagged noms in 1993 for her guest spots on “Dream On” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” while Marlee Matlin followed in 1994 with bids for “Seinfeld” and “Picket Fences.

Louis C.K. is one of the greatest stand-up comedians of all time, but he’s also a widely controversial figure. Up until 2017, Ck would have been widely considered an icon, with amazing stand-up specials, movies and not one but two brilliant TV shows under his belt. While FX’s Louis brought him mainstream success, Ck was able to parlay that into a new sideline, making content directly for his audience that he could sell via his official website. One such project was the acclaimed Horace and Pete; indeed, Ck was, for a while, on top of the world.
Then, of course, allegations surfaced regarding the comedian’s sexual misconduct, which he admitted to, and overnight his career was seemingly in tatters. But, after taking some time off, Ck started appearing in comedy clubs again and reignited his stand-up career. His website, and the audience that was willing to buy content directly from him,...

Exclusive: Emmy and Golden Globe winner Edie Falco has reteamed with her Nurse Jackie director Brendan Walsh on I’ll Be Right There — an indie comedy written by Jim Beggarly (Free Samples), which has wrapped production in New York.
Others set to star in the pic include Oscar nominee Jeannie Berlin (The Fabelmans), Charlie Tahan (Ozark), Independent Spirit Award nominee Kayli Carter (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Michael Rapaport (Only Murders in the Building), Michael Beach (Dahmer), Sepideh Moafi (Black Bird) and Emmy winner Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid’s Tale).
I’ll Be Right There follows a single mother, Wanda (Falco), who has her hands full to say the least: her eight month pregnant daughter (Carter) wants a wedding, her mother (Berlin) thinks she’s dying, her wayward son (Tahan) is either going into rehab or the army, and she barely has time for herself, not that she would know what to do with it anyway.

Amazon Freevee has given the greenlight to “Clean Slate,” a new comedy from Norman Lear’s Act III Productions, starring Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace. The original comedy has been in development at Freevee since February 2021, back when the ad-supported streamer was known as IMDb TV.
“Clean Slate,” which comes from Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen, centers on car wash owner Henry (Wallace), whose estranged child comes home to Alabama after 17 years. But he must do some soul searching as he comes to terms with the fact that his adult child is a trans woman, Desiree (Cox). There’s no word yet on an episodic order, when the series might shoot or an estimated premiere date.
Ewen serves as executive producer and writer on “Clean Slate,” and he has story credit along with Cox and Wallace. Cox will also serve as an executive producer on the show, while Wallace is a producer.

Five-time Best Comedy Guest Actress Emmy nominee Laurie Metcalf just made good on her latest bid for HBO Max’s “Hacks” despite being second in Gold Derby’s Creative Arts odds behind Jane Lynch (“Only Murders in the Building”). This win is her first in this category and fourth overall, following three consecutive supporting victories for the sitcom “Roseanne” from 1992 to 1994. She was previously recognized here for non-regular appearances on “3rd Rock from the Sun” (1999), “Monk” (2006), “Desperate Housewives” (2007) and “The Big Bang Theory” (2016).
Aside from Lynch (who took this prize in 2019 for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Metcalf’s challengers in this contest were Harriet Walter (“Ted Lasso”) and three other actresses from “Hacks”: Jane Adams, Harriet Sansom Harris and Kaitlin Olson. Adams was nominated for the same series last year, while Lynch has two more past guest notices to her name for “Two and a Half Men” (2010) and “Maisel...

Emmy darling Laurie Metcalf has added another nomination to her tally, thanks to her performance as no-nonsense tour manager Weed on HBO Max’s “Hacks.” Though she is frequently invited to TV’s big night as a nominee, it has been 28 years since the actress won her last award. Can her latest nomination in the Best Comedy Guest Actress race break that dry spell?
This bid marks Metcalf’s 12th Emmy nomination. She first competed in Best Comedy Supporting Actress for “Roseanne” in 1992 and won that category for three consecutive years (1992-94), with an additional nomination in 1995. A string of guest acting nominations followed for her stints on “3rd Rock From the Sun” (1999), “Monk” (2006) and “Desperate Housewives” (2007). Then the Oscar nominee pulled off three Emmy nominations in a single year in 2016: Best Comedy Guest Actress for “The Big Bang Theory,” Best Drama Guest Actress for “Horace and Pete” and...

The only thing better than receiving one Emmy nomination is receiving two Emmy nominations. But earning multiple bids in the same year as a performer is not as uncommon as one might think, especially with television moving toward shorter seasons and limited series still rising in popularity. This has allowed actors to appear in more projects throughout the year, giving them additional chances to be recognized. But there’s another reason it happens too: guest appearances.
So far, 10 performers have been nominated in both the drama and comedy guest categories in the same year. The first to do it was Jack Gilford, who in 1989 was nominated for his work on the comedy “The Golden Girls” and the drama “thirtysomething.” He was followed in 1991 by Colleen Dewhurst, who was nominated for her appearances on “Murphy Brown” and “Road to Avonlea,” winning for the former. Six years ago, Laurie Metcalf shocked Emmy prognosticators by earning three acting nominations in the same year for her lead role on comedy “Getting On” and for her guest turns on sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” and drama “Horace and Pete.” This year, legend Martin Short could be on track to do something incredibly similar, appearing on the Emmy acting ballot three times for three different series: Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” and Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” and “Schmigadoon!” He has the chance to not only pull off this impressive feat, but best it by one, too, with an additional bid as a producer.
By far the likeliest of Short’s possible nominations is for his scene-stealing, hilarious performance on “Only Murders in the Building.” He stars as forgotten theatre producer and true crime podcast aficionado Oliver Putnam, who teams up with his neighbors in New...

When Louis C.K. attempted to restart his career after his sexual misconduct scandal, he did it gingerly by performing unannounced sets in small comedy clubs. He’s essentially doing the same thing with his return to filmmaking. This low-budget indie dramedy being released in a smattering of movie theaters (as of now, it’s not scheduled to be screened by any of the larger chains) reveals the controversial comic working in an uncharacteristically muted fashion. Lacking the acerbic edge of his brilliant work on the sitcom Louie and web series Horace and Pete, Fourth of July turns out to be something we would have never expected from its director/co-writer — bland.
Partly this seems because he’s working in collaboration with comedian Joe List, who co-wrote the screenplay, executive produced and stars in the lead role of Jeff, a recovering alcoholic and anxiety-ridden jazz pianist.

At the 2016 Emmys, Laurie Metcalf earned three acting nominations, proving her versatility and her popularity in the industry. The actress, a three-time winner for “Roseanne,” collected bids for “Getting On,” her only time nominated as a lead, and for her guest spots on “The Big Bang Theory” and “Horace and Pete.” Two years later, she earned her first career Oscar nomination, for her supporting role in “Lady Bird” (2017). Now at the upcoming 2022 Emmys, Metcalf has a chance of repeating her Emmy triple play with nominations for three other shows — “The Conners,” “The Dropout” and “Hacks.”

Mi-6 agent Eve Polastri and English professor and department chair Ji-Yoon Kim share virtually nothing in common, except of course Sandra Oh. The 12-time Emmy nominee plays these characters on BBC America’s “Killing Eve” and Netflix’s “The Chair,” respectively, with both shows airing just six months apart in an impressive display of her incredible range. With both series eligible at the upcoming Emmy Awards, could Oh land dual nominations?
In these early days of the Emmy race, Oh looks like she could pull off this impressive feat. In our current combined odds, Oh ranks in sixth in the race for Best Drama Actress, right behind her Emmy-winning co-star Jodie Comer. She’s a bit further behind in Best Comedy Actress in eighth place, two slots outside of the likely six-person lineup but certainly within striking distance.

Cherry Jones is the defending Emmy champ for Best Drama Guest Actress for her role as Holly, the mother of Elisabeth Moss‘s crusading character June in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” But she could actually get two nominations in that category this year instead of just one. She’s also a contender for her appearances in the second season of “Succession.” It’s not uncommon for an actor to be an Emmy contender multiple times for different projects, but in this case we’re actually predicting her to be nominated for both.

It is an exceptionally windy night. Monsoon has shown its face and the raindrops are dramatically falling over everywhere. Sitting in a car, Sanjay Mishra’s elderly character is leaning over his window. There are all blues and blacks outside and you see this actor as a sort of maniacal joker in his own narrative. There’s this uncanny visual similarity with The Dark Knight and a feeling that you just can’t dust off. A person that has been ridiculed with an absolute apathy by society – a misunderstood freak struggling to understand the purpose of all the years he has spent on the earth – that’s the common thread. Being Kaamyaab (Successful) has always been a wish of this protagonist from ‘Kaamyaab’. The film, which was a part of last year’s Mami film festival, finally gets a wide theatrical release in India.

For her fan-favorite role as Kim Wexler, Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”) currently ranks fourth in Gold Derby’s collective odds for Best Drama Supporting Actress, which has six nominations slots. This confidence is striking because the Emmys snubbed her for the first three seasons of AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” but Seehorn has much in her favor this year that she did not previously. Below, I lay out four reason why Seehorn will finally score her first Emmy bid this year.
SEEthe “Better Call Saul” DVDs that Emmy voters received.
1. She is out of the probationary period
It often takes years for the Emmys to nominate breakthrough performances, with consensus only forming initially for more familiar names. The most obvious parallel is Anna Gunn in “Breaking Bad.” Gunn was not nominated until the fourth season, then won Best Drama Supporting Actress the next two years. Co-star Aaron Paul became...

Those who might have wished otherwise are out of luck: Louis C.K. is just going to keep talking. And the comedian’s newest material has aroused more anger than laughs, thanks to leaked audio from a recent performance which reveals C.K. thinks that cruel jokes about gender pronouns, school shooting survivors, and the genitalia of Asian men are now funny. When Andy Richter takes the time to explain why your jokes are hacky, you know you’ve crossed a line.
It’s true that like many comedians, C.K. is likely still developing his material on stage — the leaked set isn’t the final product the way his televised specials are. But it still represents what’s been really depressing for those who used to admire his work: Specifically, the way in which he seems to have completely lost the ability for empathy.

The festival established the award in 2017, honoring Cavett himself. The Hiff, now in its 26th year, opens Oct. 4 with Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Kindergarten Teacher” and closes Oct. 8.
“Alan Alda is one of those now rare actors who in his career continues to distinguish himself on Broadway, in films and on television,” said Hiff co-chairman Alec Baldwin. “Of course, most people remember Alda for his starring role in the seminal TV series ‘M*A*S*H,’ but Alda is also great in the movies and on stage.”
Alda has won seven Emmys and wrote many of the episodes on “M*A*S*H.” He appeared in continuing roles on “ER,” “The West Wing,” “30 Rock,” “The Blacklist,” “The Big C,” “Horace and Pete,” and “The Good Fight.” He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role...

Just over one year ago, Louis Ck was a prophet. “It’s a great year for male shittiness,” Louis Ck said at the Television Critics Association press tour in August 2017, sitting next to collaborator Pamela Adlon to talk about the second season of “Better Things.” “The market is up… It’s doing great.”
Ck was specifically referring to how Adlon used her personal experiences as a woman, especially in regard to how they can be poorly treated by men, to drive the intimate FX comedy. “She goes around and collects it, and it’s valuable to her,” he said as reporters and Adlon laughed. “It’s, like, when men and women see each other on the street, for us, we are collecting a spank bank and she’s collecting ideas for her show. And everybody wins.”
It’s yet another remark that was funny at the time, but following the...

Legendary TV star Alan Alda announced Tuesday on “CBS This Morning” that he has had Parkinson’s disease for the past three-and-a-half years. The Emmy-winning actor has continued to take roles, teach classes and serve as a lecturer during this time. In fact, he was on the Emmy Awards ballot this summer for his guest role this season on “The Good Fight.”
In making the announcement, he said, “This is not to short-change people who are suffering with really severe symptoms. But in the very beginning, to be immobilized by fear and think the worst thing has happened to you, it hasn’t happened to you, you still have things you can do.”

With a recent Oscar nomination for “Lady Bird” and a Tony drama win for “Three Tall Women,” Laurie Metcalf rode her 2018 winning streak to her ninth Emmy nomination, as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for beleaguered ABC show “Roseanne.” While Disney canceled the series after star Roseanne Barr’s racist Twitter rants, ABC will bring back the remaining cast for spin-off series “The Connors,” without Barr.
Clearly, Metcalf was popular enough with Emmy voters to weather the taint of scandal on the series.
After all, she has been notching Emmy nods for decades, going back to four 90s Supporting Actress in a Comedy nominations and three wins for the original “Roseanne” series. In 2016, Metcalf was nominated for three Emmys: Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Getting On,” plus Guest Actress in a Drama for “Horace and Pete” as well as Guest Actress in a Comedy for “The Big Bang Theory.

The Tony Awards just toasted the best productions and performers of the past Broadway season, and in a few weeks two of the big winners there — Tony Shalhoub and Laurie Metcalf — may find themselves feted with nominations for Emmy Awards, too.
Shalhoub, who is a strong contender at the Emmys for the Amazon comedy series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” took home his first Tony Award his leading role in the musical “The Band’s Visit.” Metcalf, who is in the running at the Emmys for reprising her award-winning role on the reboot of sitcom “Roseanne,” claimed her second consecutive Tony this year for her brilliant performance in Edward Albee’s “Three Tall Women.”

Laurie Metcalf has not won the Triple Crown of Acting yet, but she could become the sixth person to complete a calendar-year collection of Triple Crown nominations if she gets shortlisted at the Emmys next month.
Fresh off an Oscar nomination for “Lady Bird” and a second straight Tony on Sunday, for “Three Tall Women,” Metcalf is back in the Emmy race in two categories: Best Comedy Supporting Actress for “Roseanne” and Best Comedy Guest Actress for “The Big Bang Theory.” Despite “Roseanne”’s dramatic downfall, Metalf, who won three Emmys for the show in the ‘90s, remains in fourth place in our supporting odds. She’s just sitting out in seventh place in guest.

When Kristin Chenoweth won an Emmy in 2009 for the cancelled ABC comedy “Pushing Daisies,” she joked, “I’m unemployed now, so I’d like to be on ‘Mad Men'” (watch below). Chenoweth’s triumph was hardly the first time someone prevailed at the Emmys for a cancelled TV show, and that’s the one potential bright spot for “Roseanne” scene-stealers John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf following the show’s shocking cancellation. However, while Goodman and Metcalf are still in the running for Emmys, might the icky demise of “Roseanne” thanks to Roseanne Barr‘s racist tweets make the entire program toxic to voters?

Edie Falco knows Louis C.K. very well after staring in “Horace and Pete” and “I Love You, Daddy,” and she tells Vulture in a new interview that she’s hoping the comedian gets a second chance after admitting to sexual harassment last fall. C.K. was accused of harassment by five women in a November report from The New York Times. Some of the allegations claimed C.K. masturbated in front of female comics, and he verified the “stories are true” in a personal statement.
“He’s someone who admitted that he did what he was accused of doing and admitted that it wasn’t right,” Falco told Vulture, noting that C.K. deserves a second chance after owning up to his inappropriate behavior.
“If I was not given another chance a couple of times, there is no way we’d be having this interview right now,” she continued. “People...

Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) lost the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”), but could both walk away winners at the Emmys. Janney will be contending in Best Comedy Actress for “Mom,” while that loss could fuel Metcalf to an Emmy win for the “Roseanne” revival.
Metcalf enjoyed some of the best reviews of her career for her affecting, complex turn in “Lady Bird” and thoroughly dominated the critics awards the first half of the season. It was so beloved that many were still hoping for and predicting an Oscar upset until the very end despite Janney’s steamrolling precursor run. If any Emmy voter still feels like she was robbed, this could sort of double as a consolation prize.

Laurie Metcalf may not take home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Lady Bird,” but she could still grab some hardware later this year. With the “Roseanne” revival set to premiere next month, she’ll be in the running to pick up her fourth Emmy as Jackie Harris.
Metcalf was an Emmy favorite during the ABC comedy’s original run, three-peating in Best Comedy Supporting Actress from 1992 through ’94. A fourth victory for Metcalf would tie the category record with Rhea Perlman (“Cheers”) and Doris Roberts (“Everybody Loves Raymond”). Coincidentally, Perlman and Roberts each won three consecutive trophies before garnering a fourth later on.

“I Love You, Daddy” may end up being released after all. Deadline reports that Louis C.K. and The Orchard are finalizing a deal to give C.K. worldwide distribution rights to the controversial comedy. The Orchard originally purchased the film out of Tiff for $5 million and set a November 17 opening date, but the release was cancelled after C.K. was accused of and admitted to sexual misconduct.

In “Lady Bird,” Laurie Metcalf is a middle-class mom who fights with her daughter — and in Metcalf’s hands, it’s a tour de force. She has a particular gift for locating the intensity in what could be mistaken for mild-mannered women. (See: three Emmys for portraying little-sister Jackie on “Roseanne.”). However, it took Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” to get Metcalf back on a movie set for the first time in nine years.

It seems God had a different plan for Miracle Workers.
TVLine has learned that TBS’ forthcoming heaven-set anthology comedy — starring Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe as a dutiful angel — has recast the role of the Lord Almighty, with Boardwalk Empire‘s Steve Buscemi stepping in for Owen Wilson.
Last Spring, TBS handed a seven-episode order to the Lorne Michaels-produced series, which finds Radcliffe playing Craig, a low level angel responsible for handling all of humanity’s prayers. Buscemi will assume the role of Craig’s boss, God, who has pretty much checked out to focus on his favorite hobbies.

Marking Louis C.K.’s first feature film in 16 years — since his rather infamous Pootie Tang — I Love You, Daddy was filmed under the radar and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Pamela Adlon, John Malkovich, Rose Byrne, Charlie Day, and Helen Hunt, the story finds C.K. — no stranger to courting controversy — depicting a relationship with a 17-year-old and a 68-year-old filmmaker. Ahead of a release next month, the first trailer has now arrived.

Dear Fern,In my last letter I wrote to you and Kelley of the highly stylized provocation of Caniba. Well, I found another but far better showboating film in Toronto's Wavelengths program, one that also precariously extends the reach of its subject to the film’s form itself. Sara Cwynar’s exuberantly candied short Rose Gold, spawned from a fascination with the titular color of a new (now old) iPhone, extracts ideas and images from this conflation of commerce and metallurgic hue to ricochet around a tart, constantly erupting quasi-encyclopedia on the subject. By turns burrowing and dodging, distracted, Godard-like, with overlapping and interrupting quotes and observations, its cacophony of objects, citations, and pastel colors makes it easy to take Rose Gold as its own pop consumer item for the hip set, Instagram-ready and already halfway to being printed on limited edition tote bags. The range of Cwynar’s film is impressive,...

Introducing a screening of I Love You, Daddy at Tiff, director/writer/producer/star Louis C.K. was asked about his motivation for making the film, and stated simply that he has an affinity for “pissing on electric fences.” Provocation for its own sake unquestionably propels the movie. It takes tangible glee in making the audience uncomfortable, asking them pointed questions, and arising their ire, and does so without offering any answers or definitive opinions on the issues in question. This is fantastic if one wants to drum up internet chatter for a few days (C.K. is good at this, being a darling of the “Peak TV” era), but ruinous if one wants a work that can stand on its own long after the social media outrage/defenses/backlash/backlash-to-the-backlash cycle dies down.

In their second collaboration this year (after somniloquies, which premiered at Berlin), the two seem to be engaging with a more typical documentary subject, though the form of Caniba remains to be seen.
