Thanks to The Diary of Anne Frank and the historians who’ve studied it, the world has a good sense of what happened in the Amsterdam annex where Frank and her family hid from the Nazis during World War II.
Less celebrated, however, are the people who risked their lives to facilitate the Franks’ (and friends’) two-year period of hiding. The premiere of A Small Light, which aired Monday on National Geographic, spotlights the everyday work of Dutch resistance workers by telling the story through the eyes of one of them: Miep Gies, Otto Frank’s secretary.

A Small Light co-showrunner Joan Rater knows that Anne Frank’s story ends in heartbreaking, horrifying fashion. We all do. Frank’s diary, written while the teenage Jewish girl and her family hid from Nazis in World War II-era Amsterdam, comes to an abrupt close when their secret annex is raided. Anne, and most of her family, later died in concentration camps.
“When I read the diary, still to this day — Joan Rater, 60 years old — I get so caught up in Anne’s humanity and in her everyday stuff, her amazing voice and just in her that I find myself going,...

With a prominent recurring part on “Game of Thrones” and now a starring role on “The Last of Us,” HBO darling Bella Ramsey, age 19, has already built a career that would be the envy of any actor. Having previously clinched a BAFTA Award for Netflix’s “The Worst Witch”, she is now quite a serious contender heading into the 2023 Best Drama Actress Emmy race. If the teen triumphs for “The Last of Us” at the 75th annual ceremony, which is scheduled to precede her 20th birthday by 12 days, she will set new precedents as both the youngest champion in her category’s history and the youngest person to ever win a lead acting Emmy for a continuing series.

HBO‘s The Last of Us is one of the first hit TV shows of 2023. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are succeeding in satisfying both long-term fans of the original video game and non-gaming viewers with their portrayal of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie’s (Bella Ramsey) Lone Wolf and Cub-inspired trek post-apocalyptic America.
It is imperative to the plot that Ellie is kept alive at all costs, a distinction that was not given to Ramsey’s character Lady Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones. While learning that any resident of Westeros was fated for an early death is far from a surprise, Ramsey probably didn’t expect the news to be broken to her by her mother.

The Last of Us is the first big prestige TV show of 2023. HBO‘s adaptation of the beloved video game franchise was a highly sought-after project for many actors, especially young women hoping to take on the role of Ellie, one of the story’s two leads. Bella Ramsey of Game of Thrones fame earned the part amid plenty of competition, which included one of her former castmates on Got.
Ramsey was delighted to join the show. However, she has also had to deal with the sadly inevitable toxicity from a segment of the Last of Us fan base who have preconceived notions and an inflated sense of ownership over these characters.

Countdown star Susie Dent has revealed the identity of two Hollywood stars who “apparently” watch the show.
The long-running Channel 4 game show, which has been on the air since 1982, recently welcomed new presenter Colin Murray. He replaced Anne Robinson.
While promoting his new stint as host, Murray and his co-stars Dent and Rachel Riley were asked about their favourite Dictionary Corner guests, to which Murray named Richard Osman.
Riley opted for Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Chris Packham and Tim Rice, whom she said were “all incredible”.
Dent, who sits next to the dictionary corner celebrity guest, remained hesitant to name one, telling Metro.co.uk it was “impossible to choose”.

The Last of Us star Bella Ramsey has spoken about leaving children’s TV series The Worst Witch as a teenager to aid her recovery from an eating disorder.
The young actor rose to fame in 2016 when she was just 13 years old, as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones.
A year later, she would be cast in the lead role of Mildred Hubble in Cbbc’s adaptation of The Worst Witch. Ramsey appeared on the show for three series, but left before series four, when she was replaced by Lydia Page.
In a new interview with Elle, Ramsey said that, while filming the first series of the kids’ show, she developed what she’d later understand to be the eating disorder anorexia nervosa.

Bella Ramsey has come a long way in six years, since her first appearance in Game Of Thrones wowed audiences, going on to win her legions of fans. Her starring role in The Worst Witch and her work in His Dark Materials have demonstrated her ability to appeal to teenage audiences, making her the natural choice for this adaptation of Karen Cushman’s best selling book. She slides easily into the role of an ebullient 14-year-old aristocrat living life to the max in Medieval England and resisting all pressure to grow up until the fateful day when she learns that her dissolute father, who has squandered the family fortune, plans to marry her off in an effort to restore it.
If you’re not feeling up to contending with the reality of 14-year-old girls, this won’t be a film for you. Birdy is very full on, full of energy and determined to get.

Bella Ramsey shot to fame with her role of Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones.
Since then, the actress has appeared on shows like The Worst Witch and His Dark Materials.
She's also attached to co-star on HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, which is on tap for an early 2023 bow.
Currently, Ramsey can be seen on the Starz drama Becoming Elizabeth, where she plays the role of Jane Grey.
Bella said the big attraction to the series for her was getting to play this role because she was familiar with Jane.
"She literally lived like 15 minutes down the road from where I lived. That was just super cool to kind of play this local celebrity really," Ramsey tells TV Fanatic.
"I think she's portrayed in history books as this meek, mild, obedient young Protestant."
"That's definitely part of her personality, but that's not the only part of her personality.

HBO has found one of its leads for the upcoming The Last Of Us series. Deadline confirmed that Game of Thrones breakout star Bella Ramsey, known for appearing as the pugnacious but brave Lyanna Mormont, will play Ellie.
Though HBO has yet to announce who will appear as Ellie’s companion Joel, the series based off Neil Druckmann’s 2013 video game is getting into shape. In January the premiere cable network announced that Beanpole helmer Kantemir Balagov will direct the pilot. Druckmann will team with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin to pen the television adaptation.
The Last Of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed by a sickness that renders victims dangerous, blood-thirsty mutants. Hardened survivor Joel is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, breathtaking journey as unlikely duo depends on each other for survival.

This article contains spoilers for the His Dark Materials Season 2 premiere.
In this age of an increasingly fractured viewing audience, it’s unlikely that a TV show will reach the heights of Game of Thrones, but HBO does seem to be intentionally courting the same fantasy-loving audience with His Dark Materials. So far, it doesn’t seem to be working, and there are many, many differences between the two series that could explain U.S. viewers’ hesitance to tune into the Philip Pullman adaptation. That being said, with the His Dark Materials Season 2 premiere, the two HBO fantasy dramas do have one very explicit thing in common: actress Bella Ramsey.
While many British audiences may recognize Ramsey from children’s show The Worst Witch, Ramsey became a Game of Thrones fan favorite in later seasons for her performance as Lyanna Mormont, the zombie giant-killing noblewoman who never met a conversation...

"Let's get monster hunting!" Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for a fun adventure horror comedy called A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting, a new movie from the director of Tank Girl! Adapted from the popular scary book series of the same name. A young babysitter is recruited into a secret monster hunting society and embarks on a mission to bring back a child she is babysitting who's been abducted by monsters. Tamara Smart (seen in Artemis Fowl and "The Worst Witch") stars in this as Kelly, and the full cast includes Oona Laurence, Alessio Scalzotto, Ian Ho, Tamsen McDonough, Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, Lynn Masako Cheng, Ty Consiglio, Ashton Arbab, Crystal Balint, Ricky He, along with Indya Moore and Tom Felton. This is described as an "action-packed adventure about working together to overcome your fears" and looks like Harry Potter + Men in Black + monsters. Which seems like good fun.

The trailer features ominous music and more soundbites of screaming than we ever expected to hear on the channel that brought us “Spongebob,” “Zoey 101,” and almost every other beloved kids show. Then it asks the time-worn question anew: “Are you afraid of the dark?”
