Primetime Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Young has one hell of a resume in the horror world, lending his musical talents to fan-favorite films including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, The Fly II, Tales from the Hood, Urban Legend, Drag Me to Hell, Sinister, and more recently 2020’s The Empty Man.
The legendary composer is back here in 2024 with Christopher Young’s Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror, taking to Kickstarter to fan fund a Double CD release of his own award-winning orchestral score for the 1922 horror classic directed by F.W. Murnau.
The Kickstarter campaign previews, “In 2022, Christopher Young was engaged by Europäische FilmPhilharmonie to compose original music for the film in celebration of its 100th anniversary…the results were spectacular. Stars: Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O’Flanagan, Pippa Winslow, Philipp Christopher | Written and Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen
What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

Lovecraft may have argued that the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown, but there’s no denying the intellectual thrills of unraveling a good old-fashioned mystery. After all, some answers can serve to make a story even scarier, and I have a personal soft spot for horror yarns about grizzled investigators attempting to piece together a morbid puzzle.
This is precisely why I’ve been a fan of the Saw franchise from the very beginning, with the detective angle behind all the blood and guts making this gruesome franchise stand out amongst other so-called “torture-porn” movies.
And with the long-anticipated Saw X on the horizon this week, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best investigative horror films ahead of Jigsaw’s latest killing spree. After all, sometimes it’s fun to figure out exactly why our protagonists are going...

"Invasive might very well go down as Cullen Bunn's ultimate statement on what the horror comic can and should be. As both a mystery and meditation on the addictive nature of power, Invasive is one of the most compelling, thought-provoking, and genuinely rattling projects that I have ever had the privilege to shepherd forward,” said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson.

In an underground hospital secretly operating deep beneath the streets of a major metropolis, a radical new addiction has taken hold.
Once inside its grip, there are no rules, no oaths, and no taboos too deep to not to be broken.
The scalpel is their tool, and the alleys are their operating theater...and, together, a new class of surgeon is bent on piercing the final threshold of accepted medical orthodoxy one incision at a time.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (or, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus for purists) has been retold countless times in the 100+ years since its original publication, with many creators sticking to the tried and true formula and a select few opting instead to give the story a new spin. That’s just what screenwriters Laura Moss and Brendan J. O’Brien aim to do in birth/rebirth, a look at the lives of two women in the medical field who come together to defy death after one of them endures an unspeakable tragedy.
After the sudden death of her 6-year-old daughter Lila (A.J. Lister), maternity nurse Celie is overcome with grief until she crosses paths with pathologist Rose (Marin Ireland), a cold, calculated woman who is far more interested in the corpses she examines than the living people in her life. Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities — a marvelous compendium of streaming deadtime stories — emphasizes everything that lures me to horror anthologies. It feels like a reinvention of Showtime’s Masters of Horror, highlighting everything I appreciate about the format. One might balk at calling Cabinet of Curiosities an outright horror anthology, more a miniseries? Still, the decadently morbid and dazzlingly darkened atmosphere under del Toro’s oversight draws rich atmospheric throughlines. Del Toro’s program calls to mind grim grab bags like A Christmas Horror Story, the V/H/S series, Southbound, and all the subgenre classics fans already laud.
If you think horror anthologies are just scattered collections of short-form storytelling and that’s all, consider yourself open to reeducation. Horror anthologies are often maligned because — like other subgenres such as found footage — horror anthologies can become fallback “easy to make” titles. Individual scripts only need to stretch minutes versus hours,...

At this point, saying that 2022 has been a good year for TV would be like saying water is wet. There's more TV than ever before, which means that if you thought it was anything but a great year for the medium, you simply haven't been watching enough of the good stuff. We're not blaming you, as the total saturation of the format also means it's tougher than ever to decide what to watch. Luckily, we've got you covered with a countdown of the year's best episodes, a list that includes comedies, dramas, fantasies, horror shows, and everything in between.
While some of the year's best shows -- like "Abbott Elementary," "Hacks," or "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" -- aren't represented here, it's simply because their episodes were too uniformly great to choose just one. But the shows that did make the cut each find a way to transport, inspire awe,...

In our Q&a series Last Call, we get down to the bottom of every last thing with some of our favorite celebs - from the last time they were starstruck to the last song they listened to. This week, Joy Sunday takes our call.
Joy Sunday makes a huge impact in Netflix's new series "Wednesday." She stars as Bianca Barclay, the most popular girl at Nevermore Academy who butts heads with the titular Addams Family hero, played by Jenna Ortega. But things for Bianca are a lot more complicated than they seem on the surface.
Working on the show was a dream come true for Sunday, and a big part of that was getting to work with Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays Morticia Addams. "Catherine was basically the first time I ever looked at someone and said, 'I want her job,'" Sunday tells Popsugar. "It was rewinding to me as a 10-year-old,...

Ready to “Smile?”
Paramount’s new original horror movie, about a “Ring”-style curse that passes from one person to another and involves horribly violent deaths and – surprise! – a big wide grin on your face, is here, and it’s a huge hit. “Smile,” which stars Sosie Bacon and Kyle Gallner, is super creepy and unsettling and grossed over 200 million at the box office.
But how do you watch the new movie? Read on to find out:
Is “Smile” in theaters or streaming?
“Smile” was released exclusively in movie theaters on Sept. 30, and this is honestly probably a good thing, as its effectiveness is directly related to the amount of teenagers screaming and throwing their popcorn around you. This is a real matinee-at-the-mall movie, in the best possible way. That said, it’ll be streaming very soon…
When will “Smile” be streaming on Paramount+?
“Smile” will be streaming on Paramount+ starting Nov.

Canadian actor and filmmaker Aaron Poole shared the first details of his arthouse father-daughter road movie “Dada” with Variety this week, shortly after wrapping principal photography of the film on Manitoulin Island, located north of Toronto in Lake Huron.
Working steadily in North American TV (“Most Dangerous Game”) and film since the late 1990s, Poole, a classically trained actor, stepped behind the camera for his Toronto-premiering “Oracle” (2020), which was nominated for best narrative short at Slamdance and won the top prize at Montreal’s Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma.
In “Dada,” Poole’s feature directorial debut, James Gilbert and newcomer Ciara Alexys play a divorced father and teenage daughter who drive around the perimeter of a nuclear facility on the eve of the girl’s 16th birthday, playing nonsense games and reading things.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” Episode 3, “The Autopsy.”]
A little while ago, director David Prior got an unexpected gift. A package showed up in the mail. Inside was a tiny figurine of a bearded man.
“I got it in the mail before I even knew what it was. I thought, ‘Oh, that’s nice. A little souvenir. Did Guillermo whittle this himself?’” Prior said. “I assumed it was Dr. Winters when I got it.”
Dr. Winters is the main character in “The Autopsy,” the episode of the Netflix series “Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” that Prior directed. In this version of Michael Shea’s short story, adapted with the help of screenwriter David S. Goyer, Winters is called on to help an investigation into what local police believe is a tragic mining explosion. By the time he gets a chance to examine the bodies pulled from the wreckage,...

Taylor Sheridan‘s Yellowstone prequel 1923 is turning into something more significant than anticipated. According to Deadline, 1923 will span two eight-episode seasons set across multiple eras. Negotiations to bring cast members back for another batch of episodes are underway. The story explores the Dutton family legacy, including their battle to maintain ranch ownership in the 1940s and 1960s.
1932 will introduce “a new generation of the Dutton family and explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”
The first Yellowstone prequel series, 1883, starred Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Isabel May and followed “the Dutton family as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing...

It’s been too long since a show like “Masters of Horror” allowed twisted auteurs a platform to explore the themes and images that haunt them. Enter Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning director who has gifted his fans with Netflix’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities,” even writing two episodes and introducing each of them like a modern Rod Serling. This is a horror fan’s dream, a series of what are basically new short films from the directors of “Mandy,” “The Babadook,” “The Empty Man,” “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” and more.

In addition to being a beloved and Oscar-winning director, Guillermo del Toro is also a relentless champion of other filmmakers, from his recent impassioned Twitter defense of Martin Scorsese against a dismissive essay to his years-ago commentary track for his monster movie “Mimic” where he offers an unsolicited and enthusiastic recommendation of the film’s two direct-to-video sequels. So while plenty of other figures might be adept at filling an Alfred Hitchcock-style role as a impresario of ghoulish tales, it feels particularly fitting to see del Toro lend both his name and personality to “Cabinet of Curiosities,” a Netflix anthology series where eight different filmmakers are given around an hour to tell a creepy and/or chilling and/or goopy horror story — primarily set in the past, though presumably that wasn’t a requirement.
This eclectic group of horror and horror-adjacent directors includes material that should be hotly anticipated by genre fans.

For horror fans, Halloween isn’t just a holiday – it’s a state of mind. While most studios, networks and streaming platforms are fine with dropping most of their new horror content in the month of October, that’s just not enough to satisfy our jones for new tales of terror. I recently listed some of the new and upcoming horror movies to keep watch for – both this month and the weeks and months to follow – and it’s about time we did the same for TV series as well.
October brought us some excellent new and returning horror shows to networks and streamers, from a new season of Chucky to some chilling premieres like Interview with the Vampire, and there are still plenty more rolling out in the coming weeks. But right now, I’m going to focus on six new horror series that are coming your way soon...

The "Yellowstone" universe is expanding with another prequel — because you simply cannot have too many stories about the Duttons.

Sheridan will helm the new prequel as showrunner and has recruited from amongst some of Hollywood's biggest names to tell this generation's story. "Yellowstone" has quickly turned into a flagship series for Paramount Network — it is a highly binge-worthy cowboy saga with a world impossible not to get swept up in. Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, specifically the Appendices of The Lord of the Rings. The series is a prequel to the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and is set during Arda’s Second Age, when the Rings of Power are first created. Like any good fantasy series, The Rings of Power has an expansive cast of characters whose stories will weave through each other to determine the fate of Middle-earth. David Prior's 2020 film "The Empty Man" opens with a prologue that could easily stand alone as one of the most chilling short films ever made. It's 1995, and two couples -- Paul (Aaron Poole) and Ruthie (Virginia Kull), Fiona (Jessica Matten) and Greg (Evan Jonigkeit) -- are hiking through the Ura Valley in Bhutan. After crossing an old, swaying suspension bridge across a yawning chasm, Paul hears a soft sound like someone blowing into an empty bottle. Curious, he wanders off across the mountaintop in search of the source of this sound. As the others watch, he slips through an unseen hole in the rocks and disappears, as though he was never there at all.
It's another twenty minutes before the title card of the movie appears, stylized as "The Em ty Man." By this point, all of the hikers are dead except for Paul, who is trapped in a different kind of hell.

Like most hardcore horror fans, Guillermo del Toro loves a good anthology series. From "The Twilight Zone" to "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," which del Toro produced, the notion of getting a completely different tale of terror each week is too tantalizing to resist. So genre fans should be giddily anticipating the October 25, 2022, Netflix premiere of "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," which boasts eight episodes of spine-tingling fright from some of the most talented horror directors working today.
In the newly released teaser, del Toro promises, "Each of the episodes has a whole world." Though he is presenting the series, he has given all eight directors free rein to tell their stories on their own creative terms. Perhaps the most exciting element of the series is its focus on the construction of "beautiful, practical creatures." In an industry where CG dominates, it's an absolute joy to hear...
