Exclusive: John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country) has joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in a recurring role. He joins the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy and Taylor Selé.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hawkes has been cast as ‘Sebastian Hyde,’ a hard man who is six months out from a stroke, and now walks with a cane. Once the biggest shark in the shark tank, Hyde is now showing his humanity a bit — maybe a bit too much. The owner of a gambling club, the kind of man whose name is accompanied by fear, Hyde can be both amused by someone one minute, and a ruthless enforcer the next.

Col Needham, founder and CEO of online entertainment database IMDb and IMDbPro service for the entertainment industry, is back on the Croisette this year.
Ahead of the Cannes Film Festival, the industry and fest veteran took time to tell THR about some of his best and worst experiences in town. He also addressed his take on reporting the length of standing ovations at premieres.
Favorite meal in Cannes?
The côte de boeuf at Da Bouttau in the old town; the restaurant opened there in 1860, so they have had plenty of time to refine the menu (contextual reminder: Lincoln was elected president of the U.S. in 1860!).
Biggest Cannes faux pas?
A frequent one even after 16 years of attending Cannes: forgetting to check the weather before a screening and then getting soaked in a mid-May torrential downpour afterward because, in turn, I have no umbrella. I am sure my memory is playing tricks here,...

The mark of a successful actor goes beyond top billing, box office draw, trophies and name-dropping headlines. Perhaps the purest indicator of an actor’s success is when they show up on screen and the audience immediately trusts that they’re going to add something genuinely interesting to the story being told. Well, Babs Olusanmokun has belonged to this category of actor for quite some time now, and Guy Ritchie’s latest film, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, makes excellent use of the Nigerian-American actor, including his innately enigmatic presence and the mellifluous rasp of his voice.
Olusanmokun and Ritchie previously worked together on the Jason Statham-led Wrath of Man (2021), and they nearly worked together again in Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023). Instead, Ungentlemanly Warfare became their second go-round, and Olusanmokun received a major promotion, jumping from 26th billing on Wrath of Man to fifth billing. His undercover spy character,...

Spoiler Alert: This article discusses plot points from “The First Omen.”
Director Arkasha Stevenson grew up as a fan of “The Omen” franchise, but any anxiety she felt about helming a prequel to the 1976 original was funneled into the potential of shifting the series’ perspective.
“It’s a pretty masculine franchise,” she says. “Exploring it through the point of view of a woman was exciting. It felt like it validated its place because it already had something new to say.”
The result is “The First Omen,” the sixth film in the franchise, which was last seen in a 2006 reboot. This feature, Stevenson’s first after directing episodes of television series like “Channel Zero” and “Brand New Cherry Flavor,” puts the events in motion to start the sprawling tale of Damien, a little boy who is the Antichrist. This kickoff chapter follows a young American woman named Margaret (Nell Tiger Free...

For the uninitiated moviegoers who catch The First Omen this weekend, Nell Tiger Free’s performance will be something of a revelation. For fans of M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ series Servant, her performance will further expand on what they saw for four seasons.
The English actor, who’s also known for memorable roles on Game of Thrones and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Too Old to Die Young, plays American novitiate Margaret Daino in Arkasha Stevenson’s prequel to Richard Donner’s 1976 horror classic The Omen. The story centers around Margaret’s arrival at a Rome orphanage and her discovery of a wicked plot to spawn the antichrist. But as Free’s character dives deeper into the disturbing conspiracy, her own personal demons begin to resurface, leading to a scene that pays homage to Isabelle Adjani’s famous subway scene in Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession (1981).

Twenty-four-year-old Free has directed all that energy into dark-natured, suspenseful projects, from working with directors like Nicolas Winding Refn on Too Old To Die Young and M. Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, will soon become a TV series on Prime Video.
Prime Video has given a series order to Criminal, nearly a year after it was put on the development fast-track. A writers’ room for the project was put together early last year, but the WGA strike brought development to a halt. Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” Ed Brubaker wrote the script for the pilot and will co-showrun the series with Jordan Harper (Hightown). Both will also executive produce alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn is infamous for being one of the most provocative filmmakers working today, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that several of his favorite films are some of the most disturbing movies ever made. Over the years, Refn has given wide-ranging interviews that don’t hide the influences that have driven his feature films, from “Pusher” to “Bronson,” “Drive” to “Only God Forgives,” “The Neon Demon” and more.
Born in 1970, Refn made his directorial debut at 26 years old with “Pusher,” a violent crime thriller that introduced the cinematic world to the talents of Mads Mikkelsen. Two sequels followed in 2004 and 2005, and 1999’s “Bleeder” was another Copenhagen-set crime drama starring Mikkelsen. His initial excursions into English-language filmmaking, including the John Turturro-led “Fear X,” the Tom Hardy vehicle “Bronson,” and another Mikkelsen film “Valhalla Rising,” were all moderately well received, although most failed to entirely take...

Danish writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn isn’t as pessimistic as he was back when he declared that “cinema is dead,” but he’s no fan of the streamers that, in his words, have “kind of saturated everything” and “devalued content to just a swipe.” He made the comments while participating in a masterclass at the Venice Film Festival. According to Variety, the filmmaker behind “Drive” and “The Neon Demon” called the streamers “overfunded with money and cocaine.”
Refn, whose last project was Netflix series “Copenhagen Cowboy,” argued that “it’s incredibly sad and terrifying because art is essentially the only thing – besides, you know, sex, water and happiness — that makes us exist.”

Nicolas Winding Refn is calling on Hollywood to save cinema, especially if it means taking the streamers down a peg or tow. The “Drive” and “Only God Forgives” director slammed streaming content for having “saturated everything” and “devalued” film to “just a swipe” during a tribute to Ruggero Deodato at the Venice Film Festival, as reported by Variety.
“It’s incredibly sad and terrifying because art is essentially the only thing — besides, you know, sex, water, and happiness — that makes us exist,” Refn said, while adding that streamers have been “overfunded and rotten with money and cocaine” for years. Refn previously helmed “Copenhagen Cowboy” for Netflix and “Too Old to Die Young” for Prime Video, which he claimed Amazon buried on the platform for fear of “looking bad.”

It’s safe to say that no one saw this one coming. Danish enfant terrible Nicolas Winding Refn, director of Drive, The Neon Demon and the Pusher trilogy, has been tapped to reboot The Famous Five, based on Enid Blyton’s classic series of children’s books.
Blyton wrote 21 books on the adventures of the group of four children — Julian, Dick, Anne and George, along with their dog Timmy — beginning with Five on a Treasure Island, first published in 1942. The books have been adapted for television multiple times.
Refn will act as creator and producer on a new The Famous Five limited series adaptation, which has begun filming across the southwest of the U.K. The Danish director is executive producing through his byNWR Originals company together with BBC Studios-backed Moonage Pictures (Amazon Prime’s The Pursuit of Love) for the BBC and German public broadcaster Zdf. All the controversy around “The Idol,” HBO’s upcoming showbiz drama from The Weeknd and “Euphoria” creator Sam Levinson, is over a show almost no one has actually seen because it isn’t finished yet. But people are going to have a chance to see the sexually charged series perhaps unexpectedly soon. IndieWire reports that two or three episodes of the six-episode show will premiere out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
“The Idol,” which tells the story of a pop star (Lily-Rose Depp) who falls under the sway of a cult leader (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), was the subject of a bombshell Rolling Stone report earlier this month that alleges the production has gone “wildly, disgustingly off the rails.” The show’s original director Amy Seimetz was dismissed from the show in April 2022 with filming an estimated 80 percent complete because of creative differences. Many comic fans probably know Ed Brubaker as the man who created the Winter Soldier, reinventing long-dead sidekick Bucky Barnes. Brubaker is much more than a one-trick pony, though. He got his start writing crime comics and, after a self-imposed exile from Big Two superhero comics, he's made that his full-time gig.
He and Sean Phillips have become an inseparable writer-artist pair, putting out regular graphic novels and mini-series that always find a new way to tell Noir stories. For my money, Brubaker and Phillips' books are some of the best American comics being made right now.
"Fatale" was about a seductress whose allure is literally supernatural, while "Pulp" is about a former gunslinger who pawns off embellished versions of his escapades in early 20th-century magazines. Their definite project, though, is "Criminal," an anthology series about, well, criminals who live in the fictional Center City. Each volume tells a different story,...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios is finalizing deals for Criminal, a TV adaptation of Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips’ bestselling crime comic book series, sources tell Deadline.
Details are scarce but the project, written by Brubaker, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on his award-winning comic book series. I hear a writers room for the potential series is up and running. A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Nick Pepper, Amazon Studios’ Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Wholly Owned, and his lieutenant Matt King, Head of Tentpole, Genre and Universe Development of wholly owned content, are believed to have championed bringing in Criminal for development. As President of Legendary Television, Pepper signed Brubaker into a development deal there in 2019 and, along with EVP Development King, put Criminal in development at the indie studio, which is expected to...

Jane Fonda is sharing what she really thinks about the upcoming “Barbarella” remake starring Sydney Sweeney.
The “80 For Brady” actress admitted that she just can “try not to” think about the slated reboot film based on Jean-Claude Forest’s French comic book series. Fonda starred in the original 1968 feature directed by Roger Vadim as a futuristic astronaut who is tasked with stopping a megalomaniac scientist threatening to reintroduce evil into the galaxy.
“I try not to [think about it]. Because I worry about what it’s going to be,” Fonda told The Hollywood Reporter of the planned remake. “I had an idea of how to do it that [original producer] Dino De Laurentiis, when he was still alive, wouldn’t listen to. But it could have been a truly feminist movie.”
“Euphoria” Emmy nominee Sweeney will star in and is believed to be executive-producing the Sony Pictures remake; a director has not yet been publicly attached.

Anyone requiring proof of veteran cinematographer Darius Khondji’s versatility need look no further than his work on two very different autobiographical projects this past year—James Gray’s subdued, ‘80s-set “Armageddon Time” and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s lush, ultra-modern “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths.” For the latter, Khondji placed second to Florian Hoffmeister (“TÁR”) at the 2022 EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival, winning the Silver Frog.

‘Servant’ Star Nell Tiger Free Talks M. Night Shyamalan’s “Mystical Hold” and Her ‘The Omen’ Prequel
[This story contains spoilers for Servant’s season three finale, “Mama.”]
Servant star Nell Tiger Free, much like her character, gained a family throughout the course of filming the M. Night Shyamalan-produced series.
Free, who’s also known for her tragic turns on Game of Thrones and Too Old to Die Young, plays Leanne Grayson, a mysterious young nanny whose presence or power somehow brings the Turner family’s deceased baby back to life. (Or so we think.) But in the process of making a darkly comedic thriller about a highly dysfunctional family, Free formed a family of her own with the likes of Servant writer-director Ishana Night Shyamalan (M. Night’s middle daughter) and co-leads Toby Kebbell, Rupert Grint and Lauren Ambrose.
With the fourth-and-final season premiere releasing Jan. 13th on Apple TV+, Free is now reflecting on the show’s ending and how it compared to her own speculation.

According to Nicolas Winding Refn, Amazon wanted to keep “Too Old to Die Young” six feet under.
The auteur filmmaker, who most recently released “Copenhagen Cowboy” on Amazon, alleged that Amazon Prime Video buried the 2019 series in fears over the show making the streamer “look bad.”
“They took all my marketing money away because they were afraid that the show would reflect badly on Amazon. They told me that directly,” Refn said to Vulture. “They were so shocked by it. I was like, ‘What’s so shocking?’ They said, ‘It’s going to make us look bad.’ And I said, ‘But I don’t think anyone’s going to look at you at all.'”
Refn continued, “Certain parts of Hollywood are so self-absorbed that they think they’re at the center of the universe. The rule of fear is very dangerous. Amazon released the show, but they said, ‘We will bury you.

The first time Nicolas Winding Refn returned home to Denmark from L.A., it was out of financial necessity.
After the barnstorming success of his first two films, Pusher (1996) and Bleeder (1999), Copenhagen-set crime dramas starring a then-unknown actor by the name of Mads Mikkelsen, Refn went Hollywood with the ambitious psychological thriller Fear X (2003) starring John Turturro and Deborah Kara Unger. But Fear X bombed so badly, it forced Refn’s film company Jang Go Star into bankruptcy and sent the director home to try to repay a 5.5 million, in Danish currency, debt with a pair of Pusher sequels.
Late-career redemption came with Drive (2011), starring Ryan Gosling, which won Refn the best director honor in Cannes (and picked up an Oscar nomination for best sound editing), and The Neon Demon (2016), another LA-set film, which established Refn’s trippy, neon-tinged aesthetic among a growing based of art-house fans.

Il Buco (Michelangelo Frammartino)
With Il Buco, Michelangelo Frammartino returns to the Calabrian countryside 12 years after Le Quattro Volte. Oscillating between a shepherd slowly dying and a nearby cave-diving expedition, Frammartino and cinematographer Renata Berta capture the movement inside their static frames with elegance. A soccer ball is kicked back and forth over the cave entrance, upping the stakes of an errant kick, burning magazine pages float down into the darkness illuminating the cave depths for the explorers and the audience—Il Buco is an experiential ode to death as the final frontier. – Caleb H.

When Nicolas Winding Refn first made the leap from theatrical films to streaming series, he followed in the outsized footsteps of his indulgent predecessors: He went long. “Too Old To Die Young,” his 2019 Prime Video original, isn’t just 13 hours long; it’s three hours longer than the 10-hour season he was supposed to shoot. Like David Lynch returning to “Twin Peaks,” Refn was initially hooked by the prospect of telling a story that unfolded over whatever amount of time he deemed sufficient, but (also like Lynch) the Danish provocateur was further fascinated by the ways streaming reshaped the form. He believed younger audiences see the internet “as a kind of coexistence — like it’s a beam around them that they’ll just drop in and drop out of,” and he made his first TV show to be consumed similarly. Watch all 13 hours, start to finish, or just pick up...

A pandemic and the closure of cinemas didn’t stop Cannes Film Festival-winning Nicolas Winding Refn from creating, the Drive filmmaker hunkering down with his family to make the new noir Netflix series Copenhagen Cowboy which drops on Thursday, January 5.
The six-episode series follows Mui, a lone wolf protagonist much like the crime crusaders in Refn’s repertoire, i.e. Ryan Gosling’s Driver in Drive and Julian in Only God Forgives, and Mads Mikkelsen’s Tony in the director’s Pusher franchise. Known to possess a gift, Mui is bought as a “lucky coin” to help cure a much older woman’s fertility problems.

A new year is nearly upon us. Despite a 2022 chock-full of blockbuster movies and groundbreaking television, it is usually tough to have high expectations for the start of the new year. Historically, January has been the month that studios dump their unwanted projects to the masses to disappointing box office results. But the rise of streaming services has allowed for a healthier, more consistent dose of quality television and cinema throughout the year, from start to finish. And 2023 should be no different, especially judging by the upcoming titles coming to Netflix this January.
Netflix will be following up a jam-packed December with an almost equally-exciting lineup. In January, a slate of fan-favorite films will be making their way onto the streaming platform, while several new original projects look to impress audiences for the first time. If you want to revisit "Top Gun" or watch "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" for whatever reason,...

Are you ready for a taste of ... Netflix Winding Refn?
Yes, filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn has returned to his native Denmark for his newest project, "Copenhagen Cowboy." His second venture into the world of streaming after the 2019 crime drama "Too Old to Die Young" but his first with Netflix, "Copenhagen Cowboy" is a six-part tale centered on a mostly-silent, enigmatic lead prone to shocking outbursts of violence as they undertake a dangerous odyssey across a neon-soaked criminal underworld. It is, in other words, a Nicolas Winding Refn creation through and through.
In this case, however, "Copenhagen Cowboy" was actually cooked up during the pandemic lockdowns by Refn, his wife Liv Corfixen (who's also a producer on the series), and their daughter Lola Corfixen, the latter of whom co-stars as the character Rakel. Nicolas Winding Refn is bringing his signature stylized violence to Netflix. The “Drive” director’s upcoming miniseries “Copenhagen Cowboy” is set to release January 5. In addition, a trailer for the series dropped on Wednesday, and you can watch it below.
The six-episode series stars Angela Bundalovic as Miu, an enigmatic young woman who has devoted her life to serving a shadowy criminal organization. Returning to her hometown of Copenhagen, Miu goes on a surreal, supernatural odyssey through the seedy underbelly of the city, in an attempt to track down and defeat her archenemy Rakel (Lola Corfixen). Based on the trailer, Miu’s journey carries all the hallmarks of Winding Refn’s filmmaking, with neon lighting, a synthwave soundtrack, and tons of bloodshed.

The “Copenhagen Cowboy” creator and director revealed that the upcoming six-episode Netflix series is his own take on a “superhero show,” building out the cinematic universe created by previous films “Only God Forgives,” “Drive,” and “Valhalla Rising.”
“I’ve done films in the past with a certain type of character that was first played by Mads Mikkelsen in ‘Valhalla Rising’ on one hand and then Ryan Gosling played him as a driver in ‘Drive’ and then Vithaya [Pansringarm] played him as a lieutenant in ‘Only God Forgives,'” Refn explained during the Venice Film Festival premiere of the series, via Deadline.
He continued, “So, I was working with Robert Wade and Neal Purvis, or Purvis and Wade as they are called, on a larger female evolution...

In recent years, Nicolas Winding Refn has become known to many domestic audiences for his neon-tinged, Los Angeles-set films such as “Drive” and “The Neon Demon.” But before that, the Danish director rose to prominence for documenting the criminal underbelly of Copenhagen in the “Pusher” trilogy. When the Covid-19 pandemic prevented him from traveling outside his home country to work, he set his sights on Copenhagen once again.
Refn’s latest project is “Copenhagen Cowboy,” a new six-episode Netflix series that he previously described as a “poetic neo-noir.” The project recently wrapped production and is set to premiere later this year on the streaming service, following its official debut at the Venice Film Festival. The series, which Refn created and directed, stars Angela Bundalovic, Lola Corfixen, and Zlatko Buric, as well as Andreas Lykke Jørgensen, Jason Hendil-Forssell, Li Ii Zhang, Dragana Milutinovic, Mikael Bertelsen, and Mads Brügger.

Nicolas Winding Refn has brought his neon-soaked, egotistical self back to his native Denmark for the first time in over a decade. The man behind "Drive" has not directed a project there since 2009's "Valhalla Rising," and it has been even longer since he made something in Danish. Now, we have "Copenhagen Cowboy," his latest venture into the world of episodic television after his Miles Teller starring Prime Video miniseries "Too Old to Die Young."
Refn cooked up "Copenhagen Cowboy" with his wife Liv Corfixen while his family were trapped at home during lockdown. This is a family affair, also starring their daughters Lola and Lizzielou Corfixen, and Refn could not be more pleased about that, telling Variety:
"It became a wonderful creative process where I was no longer living in two separate worlds as a creator by day and a family man by night. It's a new chapter in...

For all the noise that Nicolas Winding Refn makes with his daring, provocative, controversial, and challenging films, perhaps one of the least-seen things any modern auteur has made in recent years is his series, “Too Old To Die, Young,” starring Miles Teller which was seemingly not promoted and dumped on Amazon in the summer of 2019. That’s a shame because as difficult as it was to watch, violent, gruesome, brutal, and confrontational as it was, “Too Old To Die Young” was a blistering statement about America.

It took a pandemic and a lockdown for “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn to make a directorial comeback in Denmark, where he had delivered the “Pusher” trilogy early in his career.
“Sometimes the strangest things come in mysterious ways, and this is one of those,” Refn says of “Copenhagen Cowboy,” his Netflix original series, slated to world premiere Sept. 9 at the Venice Film Festival.
Since “Drive,” Winding Refn has directed the Bangkok-set thriller “Only God Forgives,” with “Drive” star Ryan Gosling; “The Neon Demon,” with Elle Fanning playing an aspiring model in Los Angeles.; and the Amazon Prime Video series “Too Old to Die Young,” starring Miles Teller as a grieving cop in crime-ridden Southern California. He was preparing another project set abroad when the pandemic hit.
