Finland’s Teemu Nikki scored an international breakthrough with his sophomore film, the sardonic Euthanizer. He reteams with his producer Jani Poso for German-Finnish co-prod Nimby (Not in My Back Yard) and actress Hannamaija Nikander, who has been featured in several of Nikku’s shorts as well as his past two features, Lovemilla (2015) and Euthanizer (2017). The Aretha Franklin documentary “Amazing Grace,” the moon-mission chronicle “Apollo 11” and the first film from Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, “American Factory,” have made the short list for the International Documentary Association’s 2019 Ida Documentary Awards, the Ida announced on Thursday.
The announcement narrows the field to 30 feature films and 21 shorts that will move on to a second round of voting.
The IDA’s short list of 30 feature films contains 10 films that were on Doc NYC’s recent 15-film list of the year’s likeliest nonfiction awards contenders: “American Factory,” “The Apollo,” “Apollo 11,” “The Biggest Little Farm,” “The Cave,” “Diego Maradona,” “The Edge of Democracy,” “For Sama,” “Honeyland” and “One Child Nation.”

French actress and director Mati Diop will be honored with the inaugural Mary Pickford Award for outstanding female talent at the Toronto International Film Festival’s upcoming Tribute Gala. Tiff announced the news along with their schedule of events including live performances and interviews featuring directors and actors such as Oscar winner Javier Bardem.
“Mati Diop’s film ‘Atlantics’ is a profound and unsettling work of art,” Cameron Bailey, artistic director and co-head of Tiff, said in a statement. “We know this is just the start for such an original and authentic voice, and we’re delighted to celebrate her success at this year’s Tiff Tribute Gala.”
Diop’s screening of “Atlantics” at Cannes Film Festival this year made history as she became the first black female director to screen a film in competition at the festival. The movie went on to win the Grand Prix.

The 25th New Nordic Films, unspooling Aug. 20-23 parallel to the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund, will kick off with the critically-lauded “A White, White Day” by Hlynur Pálmason. The Icelandic drama which world premiered at Cannes’ Critics’ Week, is among 19 films set to screen, of which 13 are world market premieres such as Jesper W. Nielsen’s thriller “The Exception,” Venice Critics Week’s pick “Psychosia,”, Venice Days’ entry “Beware of Children”, Jens Jonsson’s “The Spy” and Jesper Ganslandt’s “438 Days”.
