- Colton Briggs: [about grave marker] Nothing belongs to the dead, because the dead don't need anything. Only the living need to possess things. The living need food, water, shelter, clothes, family, money, land. But the dead, the dead have already been tended to. Once they're put in the ground, they have all they need. They're not selfish. I like the dead.
- Colton Briggs: Even though I could recognize fear in men, even to a point where I could use it against them, I can honestly say I had no idea what it actually felt like. It was as if I'd been born dead inside. But I didn't care, 'cause I was dead inside.
- Brooke Briggs: How did mama change that?
- Colton Briggs: When I met your mother, there was no introduction. There was no getting to know each other. And in that first moment I saw her, I... I felt something. Something I never felt before.
- Brooke Briggs: Love?
- Colton Briggs: Fear. Fear she wouldn't talk to me. Fear she wouldn't love me. Fear I couldn't make her my wife. Fear of losing her. She was the only thing I ever feared. And the only thing I ever loved.
- Brooke Briggs: Marshal, did you find your horse?
- Marshal Jarrett: Tied up at the end of town.
- Brooke Briggs: [tearfully] Just like he said.
- Clark: [to son of convicted man] You know where sinners go? Well I can tell ya, it sure as hell ain't Wyoming.
- Brooke Briggs: [after levering gun out of henchman's hands] He cries pretty good. I'm gonna do it like him next time...
- Colton Briggs: No reason to hurry. Gunshots might have a way of speeding some folks up, but they have a nasty habit of slowing other folks down.
- Brooke Briggs: My teacher at school is sick. If it's pox, she could be sick for days. She could die.
- Colton Briggs: We'll get new teacher.
- Brooke Briggs: We forgot my school books. Think they burned up in the fire.
- Colton Briggs: We'll get new books.
- Brooke Briggs: What about my clothes?
- Colton Briggs: We'll get new clothes.
- Brooke Briggs: Why did we burn the old ones?
- Colton Briggs: Because we're not going back! We're not going back. As soon as I finish what I have to do, we'll find a new place, and we'll replace everything you lost.
- Brooke Briggs: Except mama.
- Eustice: Are you serious? Colton Briggs? This is Colton Briggs's place?
- Big Mike: Eustice. Quiet.
- Ruth Briggs: That's right. And I'm his wife. And you hit me in the face with your gun. Broke my arm. Shot his horse. You boys have woke up the devil...
- Walter McCallister: You see, the problem with progress is that something's gotta go. Out with the old, in with the new. That's the way of the world. But this transition, oh, it's rarely peaceful. No ma'am. The transition of power is one of violence, necessary violence. That's why we're here today.
- Walter McCallister: You see, I got a monster inside of me. The devil himself. That devil can't get out while there's another devil out there in the world. Both these devils can't exist at the same time.
- Brooke Briggs: Oh, I get it. You're crazy. But don't worry. My father will be here soon. He'll fix that.
- [first lines]
- Clark: [to hanging crowd] When we take it upon ourselves to act against out best interests, and the best interests of the community, we have to understand that there are consequences for those actions. And we must respect the hierarchy of power that's handed down to us from God.
