So far, careless nostalgia
As good as some other action/adventure stuff. I would have been happier to see more leisurely character and interpersonal development, to give the return viewers a better chance to update their perspectives. I hope to see TM reveal his almost impish (immature?) sense of humor, and TC reveal his not so slight frustration at being put-upon. Such nuances need time to develop, and I have the nagging feeling that too much was crowded in in too short a time.
And I feel the same way when I encounter devilish details, like the destruction of the Ferrari in trailers which were aired even before the series started; the delicious long-running tension over the condition of the car in TOS (the original series) was doomed forever by the utter destruction of two of them, followed by TM promising to pay for the repairs! Who wasn't watching? REPAIRS?!?! But maybe we'll see the black one from now on?
A less dramatic flub involved a gold ingot retrieved by TM from a shipwreck while scuba diving. A brick sized ingot, plainly marked 1 KG, handled as though it weighed just that, instead of the 40 plus pounds it would weigh. I am not sure a solo diver could even retrieve one of these without assistance or apparatus. And I won't mention the violation of safety rules in diving solo. (OK, I did.)
And fastidious Higgins (gender irrelevant) would never put his/her hand to such an abysmally bad ship model.
I suppose such fussiness won't matter if the producers are simply trying I to snag a whole new generation of viewers inured to endless near-impossible pulse pounding action, but if they hope to satisfy perceptive, thoughtful (returning) viewers, the shadow of hasty, sloppy craftsmanship taints every level of the production.
But we all can name our favorite series that had a shaky start before finding its own focus and voice; this one is pleasant enough for now, and I hope it succeeds.
