Party Down (2009)
This sassy gem is adult humour in the best sense!
After the guilty (far too old to be it's intended audience) pleasure of Veronica Mars I stumbled across this series trying to find something else by Rob Thomas ...and what a gem! The contrast between Ron(KEN MARINO)'s touchingly earnest efforts, while his team of caterer's resent every minute of a temporary, crappy job is pitch perfect.
Also, eccentric clients (every episode is at different gig) provide some great guest cameos (Steven Weber's is my current favourite). The cringe-worthy situations that develop and basis of characters 'on the edge' of show-business remind me of Ricky Gervais's 'Extras' - but this is FAR funnier. The weakest element so far is the romance but let's see what happens with it. I just ordered the DVD of series 1 too. Bravo all involved!
Serenity (2005)
Wow ! Surprisingly good - nice work fellas.
This was a delight - easily the best SF film I've seen in years, with characters I cared about, brilliant effects and an interesting vision of the future as a backdrop for the adventure. Loved the sly humour too! Later I found the connection with the original series Firefly (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/combined ) and borrowed a copy - watching this is highly recommended but it's a bittersweet pleasure as it was cancelled after very few episodes by someone who *must* need their head examined...
I've bought the Firefly DVD and will definitely watch it (and Serenity) again in the future, but I urge you to see this movie while it's on the big screen :-)
Suikoden (1973)
Do Not Despise the Snake for Having No Horns...
... for Who is to Say it Will Not Become a Dragon?
The Water Margin is justly regarded as a cult TV show in the UK where the entire 26 episode run has been shown 3 times since 1976. Originally a 13th century Chinese epic, this TV series was made in Japanese and then dubbed into English before screening by the BBC.
I'm not going to include any spoilers, but simply say it's a tale of chivalry. If you try it your curiosity will be well rewarded. Also it has what must be the most heroic TV theme ever...
Oh ~ and it shouldn't be confused with either the 1972 Shaw Brothers film of the same name, or the oddball 1999 'Water Margin: Heroes' Sex Stories'.
'...One wrong can move a people, and a wronged people can move the world.'
The Trap (1966)
Why isn't this on DVD yet?
As with most of the other users I love this film ~ so release it on DVD already!!
The folk song version of the Ron Goodwin's theme, as sung song by beardy french canadian trapper (Oliver Reed) is a classic, (...'When I'm a man I'll take me a wife, and live in a house on a hill, a hill...and she shall have diamonds & pearls, and pearls, and she shall have diamonds and pearls!') and is now used every year as the music for The London Marathon.
Does anyone who's bought the German soundtrack know if that version's included?
Anyway, this is a good 'wet afternoon' kind of film - give it a try. And who can resist Ollie Reed when he was still hot?
Summerfield (1977)
Why isn't this on DVD release yet?
Earlier comments already tell you what's so good about this film and have kindly not spoiled the plot so I'll simply add that I would love to see this classic film again.
This movie makes a refreshing change from modern formulaic trash (you know the ones I mean) so give it a go ~ I'm surprised by how watchable 70's movies are, it didn't seem so then but it was a brilliant decade for films.
Come on whoever-owns-the-film-rights, pull your finger out and give this fab movie the DVD release it deserves! NOW!
P.S, If you like this, try 'Bunny Lake is Missing' which is another quirky little gem...
Wilder Napalm (1993)
Romantic comedy lights my fire
Brothers with psychokinetic powers (yes, really) duel not just for Debra Winger's affections but really over a secret from their childhood that left them at odds over their powers.
There are surreal touches (the fire brigade that act like a singing Greek chorus), but there is also humour, wit and romance. The soundtrack is great also. And similar to the way American Werewolf in London used every great Wolf song they could get ~ but with fire and I don't think I'll ever forget Dennis Quaid (mmmmm Dennis Quaid), setting his own trailer a rockin' too 'She's a lady' ~ priceless ;)
Best line missing from the quotes section btw ~ 'Once you've had a clown, you never go back!'
I love this movie (I just ordered the DVD from the US) and if the comments written by the kind of people who'd be happier with Legally Blond 3 don't put you off ~ give it a try :)
