Black Bird is a true crime thriller based on Hillel Levin's memoir, In with the Devil: A Fallen Hero, a Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption.
The actors are brilliantly casted to where most of them look identical to their counterparts and all deliver a compelling performance. Paul Walter Hauser does a phenomenal job portraying psychotic serial killer Larry Hall. While outshined by Paul Walter Hauser's acting, I think it's worth mentioning both Taron Egerton and Ray Liotta provide a riveting performance as James Keene and James "Big Jim" Keene.
Majority of the mini-series stays true to the real life story of James Keene and Larry Hall, besides certain aspects of certain characters being changed and including a fictional character like CO Carter. Even Springfield prison as shown in the series is very identical to the real building.
The show kept me hooked with each episode. It reminded me a bit of True Detective season one, but also managed to remain vastly different. The show has a strong story that is well told throughout 6 episodes. It isn't stretched out, but also doesn't leave any unanswered questions. I'd say it's the perfect length.
Overall the show is definitely worth watching. With a lot of new TV show releases being mini-series, I would say this is certainly one of the better ones.
Final Rating: 8/10.
