Rescue 8 (1958)
loved this TV show
I loved watching "Rescue 8" on TV as a child in the early 1960s on Australian Television in Sydney. I use to enjoy watching it on week day afternoons after school. I recall seeing actors such as Robert Redford in guest starring roles. Jim Davis and Lang Jeffreys were my heros.
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)
I enjoyed this thriller more than "The Matrix"
I enjoy films about time travel and really enjoyed this film about virtual reality. I thought the story and special effects were excellent. The film was well cast and I could see the German influence in the production. I liked this film better than "the Matrix".
Lone Star (1996)
One of my favorite movies
Although I haven't seen this film since 1996 it is another movie which lingers in my mind. I really enjoyed this film and the chemistry between Chris Cooper and Elizabeth Pena was beautiful. It has all the elements of a good film:- a good story, well cast, romance and mystery. I really noticed and appreciated Chris Cooper in this film along with his excellent performance in "American Beauty"
The Chain Reaction (1980)
A good Aussie thriller
I saw this movie at the Roxy Cinema,Parramatta, Sydney Australia in 1980. I thought the action stunts and story were good. Steve Bisley who played Goose in "Mad Max" in one of his early lead roles. Watch out for Mel Gibson in an unbilled role as a mechanic at the beginning of the film.
Homicidal (1961)
Another under rated horror classic
I watched this late one night on my own in the 1970s and was scared and shocked. For years I wondered who Jean Arliss was until I was able to do some research on the internet. William Castle was a master of horror and gimmicks. This was one of a few horror movies that really left an impression on me.
Other movies which scared me on TV as a child or teenager in the 1960s and 1970s were:- The Tingler, 13 Ghosts, Psycho, Carnival of Souls, The Mad Magician and House of Wax.
Carnival of Souls (1962)
This film haunted me from childhood
I saw "Carnival of Souls" in the 1960s on TV in Sydney. The film was presented on TV by a character called "Deadly Earnest." This film haunted me as a child and I had never forgotten the film or the creepy way it had scared me. I was lucky to pick up a VHS video copy for $5.00 in a bargain bin at the Woolworths Metro store in George St , Sydney, about 5 years ago. Although "Carnival of Souls" is a low budget film, I found the amateur actors added realism to the film. I thought the story and twist at the end was excellent. Did this film inspire "Sixth Sense" with Bruce Willis ?
This is a classic cult horror film and should not be underrated.
Early Frost (1982)
The rare lost film made and set in Blacktown, Australia?
I had almost forgotten that this film existed until I saw it pop up as the midday movie on TV in 1998. The storyline and stars seemed familar. I remember when this film was being made in Blacktown and there was an article in the local newspaper about this production at the time. It was my understanding that Terry O'Connor was a local who wrote and directed this low budget film.( I suspect that David Hannay salvaged and edited the film as curiously there doesn't appear to be a director's credit on the film.) It was Terry O'Connor's own Jaguar Car which was blown up in East Blacktown Hotel car park. I was surprised to see veteran actor Guy Doleman from the "Ipcress File" in the film and wondered how he came to be cast. David Franklin played a very campy killer, or was he? I was a bit confused as to whether young Joey was involved in the murders and why the spear gun? Was it me or was there a hint of incest between mother and son at the party. the film also starred Jon "Sonny" Blake who was tragically injured in a real life car accident and left permanently brain damaged. Joanne Samuels who played the girlfriend also played Mad Max's wife in the movie "Mad Max". Whatever happened to the kid who played Joey or Terry O'Connor?
Although the acting is terrible, my children and I got a kick out of watching this thriller set in and around Blacktown. Most of the actors were from prominent 1970's soap opera's such as the "Restless Years" and "The Young Doctors".
