An American Haunting (2005)
Very Odd, not in a good way
I went to this this movie on a date in a last minute decision. Without spoiling the story Ill just mention that this film goes to a flashback early in the film. Problem is it doesn't return to modern day until the end. I found myself asking the question, when will the story begin, but it doesn't. Repetitive is definitely the way to describe this film and its attempt to create an ending which leaves it audience thinking, fails miserably and instead bewilders the viewer.
Where is the story, I couldn't find it, the same jumpy scenes can only be used so many times before the film begins to annoy and bore the audience. I can often find joy in slightly dodgy horror films as many have a certain charm, this however does not. On a directing viewpoint, I found myself cringing at some of the angles and changes of scene something which shouldn't be noticeable to a lay viewer like myself.
All in all very disappointing, repetitive, lacking of originality and way too many dreams by the characters, seldom did much of the action in this film actual happen to the characters outside of a dream sequence.
Poor
The Boys of Sunset Ridge (2001)
Cant believe it actually meant something...
I started watching this film with average hopes of it filling my morning but ended up incredibly effected by it. The first things that led me to this film was the three sopranos stars it boasted and of course the game of golf. I admit I missed the begining of this film but the jist of it became very obvious, three boys who make a pact that they will sneek onto the same golfcourse at the same time every year and the entertainment follows. There were several points in the film where I thought the humour was a little slapstick but when you look past that you see a passionate story that realy has something to say.
Before this film I was not a fan of watching films I had never heard of but now im fully open minded about anything i start to watch. I will probably never see this film again which is unfortunate but it only take once to realise that this gem will have some effect on whoever cares to pay attention.
Quality
Under Hellgate Bridge (1999)
Unfortunatly poor...
I was attracted to this garbage by the information button on sky tv which said "Uncle Junior and Big Pussy of the sopranos star in this film." Absolute tripe their roles are small and non essential, both play easily dispensable characters and i have the feeling these two very fine actors were simply added to promote a film which has no real originality and nothing to teach us. This film has alot of dialogue which could have made the film more mental that physical but the speeches are unsatisfying and repetitive.
Poorly made, made me poorly
Trees Lounge (1996)
Leaves a funny taste in your mouth
After hearing this film mentioned on steve buscemi's comentary while listening to Pine Barrens an episode of sopranos and felt i had to see it. Once i (finally!) found this film i was imediatly drawn away by the tag line "Mr Pink makes a movie" it still makes me shiver today. But I decided to buy it despite the DDT like qualities of that line.
The film itself has to be watched twice to apreciate it as the first time all i got from it was a story about a drunk. Buscemi is great, a very convincing portrail of a lazy bum for such an intelligent guy. The story is simple'ish but has some funny one liners. A must see for any Buscemi fan like myself.
Only one question why is Sam L Jackson on the back of the box when he has all of two lines? Pitty Buscemi could just let the movies speak for itself rather than using his past successes and cameo roles to push it.
