Marple: By the Pricking of My Thumbs (2006)
A Fun Escape
I loved it, plain and simple. I liked the chemistry between Tommy and Tuppence and understood the reason for her drinking - it becomes clear as the movie went on and adds a bit of pathos to her storyline. Meeting Miss Marple just added fun to the mix, almost making this a "buddy" flick.
My sons are 11 and 13 and they became so wrapped up in the mystery that when the first half was over, they got upset thinking they might have to wait a week to see the ending. (To their (and my) relief, the second half followed the first.) When the movie was over, they sat up for almost an hour talking about it and now they want to read Agatha Christie! Honestly, can you ask for more than that from a book turned into a movie? To have it excite someone to the point where they want to find more of the same to read? I think not.
NOTE: The other reviewers might have some good points about the movie's creators adding Miss Marple into a mystery that she was never in, but I did not know and give my review based upon that. (I have read one or two Miss Marple mysteries, but I was more of a Hercule Poirot fan and have never read a Tommy & Tuppence mystery, much less watched on on TV.)
The Muppets' Wizard of Oz (2005)
A fun movie for the whole family
The Muppets' Wonderful Wizard of Oz was very cute and the kids and I enjoyed it a lot. Ashanti may not be the best actress in the world, but she came across as sweet and sincere and now she can count my 3 kids as her newest fans. The muppets were great, although the voices were a bit off compared to my memory (example, Sam the Eagle sounded "gruff and tuff", not regal and patriotic as he used to sound). That is to be expected though and is one of those things that happen as time goes on, starting with the death of Jim Henson and the aging and replacements of other original muppetteers). The twist on the traditional story was very cute, sweet enough for the little kids with just a bit of warped humour thrown in for the adults. (Spoiler - the "Flying Monkeys" was a motorcycle gang that was originally a group of "motorcycle enthusiasts". )
From Justin to Kelly (2003)
Cute Kid Movie
Yes, I found and purchased this movie from the $5 Walmart DVD bin and yes, it's worth every penny. Don't watch this movie expecting Oscar or Grammy winning performances. Watch it as a cute pre-teen movie and you won't be disappointed. It won't change your life, it won't even make you think hard, but it's still enjoyable.
My husband, my kids, and I enjoyed it because it was like a 2000s version of a Frankie & Annette beach movie. Almost no violence, bad language, or sex and even the dancing didn't have many sexually provocative moves.
Heck, it was worth buying just to see my 4 yo try to dance and sing every song.
