Les Misérables (2012)
It'd be good if they've skipped the musical numbers.
Okay so to start out: I absolutely LOVE Anne Hathaway (my favorite princess), Hugh Jackman (He's hot AND has claws), Russell Crowe (I can't stop re-watching and crying to A Beautiful Mind), Amanda Sayfried (My favorite in Mean Girls and she's a really good singer), Eddie Redmayne (His voice, his accent, his looks... I actually watch movies simply because HE is in them *drool*) and Samantha Barks (She IS the best Eponine, ever).
And I absolutely LOVE Les Mis. So to summarize it: I was SOO looking forward to this movie. My favorite actors and actresses coming together in my favorite musical.. I really thought it couldn't be such a big disappointment as it was...
The Singing! No, no, no, no. Amanda Seyfried who I KNOW can sing sounds like a chirping bird, and it's unbearable. I know they decided to not record the songs in a studio and act according to them, but to sing while acting and that's a pretty nice idea. Kind of like how they do in musicals. The problem is just that these people aren't trained musical artists. They are are wonderful actors and actresses, BUT listening to them "sing" while acting was horrible.
Samantha Barks! She is the BEST Eponine according to me. She's an amazing singer and she's done a marvelous job in all the Les Mis productions EXCEPT for this. I don't know what happened, but the key in "On my own" was low and the movie's version of On my Own is the worst I've heard by far. I KNOW she's capable to do soooo much more and the only reason for why things went the way it did was because of the directors as far as I can figure out.
The Acting! The acting was good. Because that's what these actors and actresses are good at! But please, leave the singing to the trained!
All in all: 1. For future references: Cast musical actors and actresses to do the singing AND the acting is necessary. 2. Before making a new version of a musical, it's best to listen to the actual original songs and know how they are supposed to be performed (For example: On my Own is a cry in the void made by Eponine. She sings in hope to over voice her broken heart. This is a POWERFUL song. Something the directors, writers and musical department failed to realize . 3. I gave this film a 4 because of the acting, ALONE. Watching this movie on mute with subtitles is a very beautiful experience. And that's the only way this'll be an enjoyable movie for me. Looking at Eddie Redmayne and Hugh Jackman... *drool*
Watching this version of Les Mis was just as painful as to watch Nick Jonas taking on the role as Marius in the 25th Les Mis anniversary, and THAT is saying much. Re-do it, do it right.
Parallels (2015)
A great plot which could've been a successful series.
I watched this movie last night after adding it to my watch list in Netflix when it came out. I knew nothing about the actors or the plot, I just read "sci-fi" and decided to give it a chance. Something I'm 80% happy I did. The plot was really great. It kind of gave you a Fringe-feeling. The acting was great, the script was... Mostly great. But I do regret watching the move because:
1. It was originally supposed to be a pilot for a new series and it was therefore written as a pilot, i.e: You kept watching, it was so exciting and new and you were all giggly and then right when you think you we're reaching the climax it ends..... with a cliffhanger....
2. I will never know how the story continues unless they decide to make a sequel or a series out of the movie.
I'm thinking about Stargate SG-1. Before the series came a movie which launched the entire series. So, I'm kind of hoping the major TV Networks sees our reviews and realizes that this series has some real potential!
So: to sum up my review: WATCH IT! And then get frustrated because of the ending and then post a POSITIVE review and cross your fingers and hope for the best to happen. Because the creators of Parallels opened up a big new world (or worlds, to be correct) which I know I will want to explore more thoroughly.
Roswell (1999)
My overall opinion about Roswell.
I would like to start this review out with saying that I really enjoyed watching Roswell. I'm really disappointed that they were only able to do three seasons. My opinion is that the storyline had great potential.
First off, I would like to praise all the actors' contribution to the series. I think they managed to portray the characters in a brilliant way. Everyone except Shiri Appleby. I think they could've casted a better actor for the role o Liz. I don't know what it is... But Appleby made me want to stop watching the show during it's second season. It had nothing to do with what Liz did, it was because of how Appleby portrayed Liz. Secondly... What the writers of the show seemed to forget often were their age. The characters were portrayed as old and wise. Liz and Max early decided they were meant to be and they rushed to the alter after they graduated high school, at the age of 18. Yes, their love was beautiful and inspiring, but when you realize they're only about 15-16 years old the first season it soon becomes ridiculous. The fact that they rushed off to the alter at the age of 18 makes the end a bit... ridiculous. They were so young at that time and to think they would stick together after getting out to the "real" world seems a bit naive. So, now I'm done with the biggest issues I had with the show.
I would like to praise Katherine Heigl for an EXCELLENT job. She is always excellent as an actress and there was no difference here. I did not always like her character, but she always portrayed Isabel in an amazing way. I would also like to thank the creators and the writers for giving us an amazing show. If only it could've lasted longer...
