She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)
She-Ra
A really rough (but beyond enjoyable) show that stays at an agonizing and frustrating 6-7 until the end of season 3. After that, it's a 10 out of 10 all the way home.
Yeah, She-Ra is a really hard show to get through. Just about half of it is overbearing fluff and mild nonsense that is saved by its endearing characters and impactful moments. It's cringey at times to the point where it gets annoying, but stick with the show and you'll wind up with one of the best action animations of recent memory.
After season 3, She-Ra becomes nonstop amazing that really keeps swinging and never misses. If there was ever a show to give a chance and watch grow into something special, this is it.
But like I said, BE PATIENT WITH IT. It takes time for the show to get amazing, a long time. But by the time you finish it, you can't help but go back and see the journey again.
Euphoria (2019)
Euphoria
Euphoria is a gratuitous show that has way too much drugs and nudity for its own benefit. It's also too artsy with some of its shots and sequences and over indulges itself in its style...which is why I found it odd when it has the substance to back it up.
With a wide variety of characters all with their own unique traits, quirks, and stories, Euphoria manages to balance so much so well. And it also does the added benefit of not glorifying any of what it shows. It doesn't glorify sex nor does it glorify drugs.
This show will not be for everyone as it is gratuitous. So know that going in. But yeah, great story, great characters, great acting, great writing, great directing, great cinematography; just great overall.
What If...?: What If... Thor Were an Only Child? (2021)
What if...
Just the right amount of f$&@ing stupid to warm your hearts.
Star Wars: Visions: T0-B1 (2021)
It's Astro Boy
They did Astro Boy in my Star Wars. It's childish and clearly meant to be something for the tots. I can appreciate it for what it is.
Star Wars: Visions (2021)
Star Wars Visions
It's a trip. Maybe not a good trip at times, but a trip nonetheless. Props to Disney for doing something drastically different with Star Wars. I'd love to see more of this.
I Flip You Off for Four Hours (2020)
Unlike anything I've ever seen
A masterpiece of biblical proportions. There are no words, only emotions. True cinema has been made here; I don't think I'll ever be the same.
Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
Where the Wild Things Are
Too adult for kids, too kid for adults, but a perfect Lesson learned for both.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Godzilla: King of Monsters
Probably one of the worst written and dumbest movies I have ever seen. Nothing makes sense and the overall plot should earn this movie a 2.
But the music and visuals actually make up for it. The action and the acting are pretty baller too. The direction and cinematography is also great too.
Overall, this is just a fun movie. Don't judge it too harshly, just accept it for it is: a dumb fun action movie.
ThunderCats Roar (2020)
Thundercats Roar
Just as Riverdale proves that a dramatic take on a comedic property doesn't work, Thundercats Roar proves that a comedic take on an otherwise dramatic property REALLY doesn't work.
I'll give the show some credit, it tries to stay true to what made the OG Thundercats so unique and interesting. It's wide variety of character and colorful locations make for an intriguing and incredible viewing.
But this shows lack of respect for its fans is what really makes it as bad as it is. Rather than stand on its own two feet like the 2011 reboot did, Thundercats Roar decided to copy every other Cartoon Network show with a 15 minute runtime and Cal Arts Style artwork. It's emphasis on comedy makes for a show who's design is based entirely around its comedy. So why does its comedy suck? No joke ever lands and I find myself watching with a blank face.
Steven Universe and Infinity Train have similar art styles while still remaining its own thing. It chooses to tackle difficult subjects and manages to do it well. Thundercats Roar does none of that and is just not good.
Sure, an argument can be made that this show is made specially for kids, but in the promos, the creator said that this was for fans of the OG series as well. People that are in their 40s will watch this show and THEY KNOW IT.
It doesn't have an identity and chooses to do more of the same while bringing the bare minimum to the forefront. It's a shame and downright disrespect to the property. The 2011 version should have gotten another season and more focus. But I guess you never know what you got 'til it's gone.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Avengers: Infinity War
...It's really hard to talk about this movie without giving everything or something HUGE away. What I can tell you is the bare basics of what you will be witnessing. And that is as follows: Everything you've seen, everything you know, is wrong. Your expectations are wrong. You are not prepared for what this movie has to throw at you. YOU'RE NOT. I surely wasn't; I found myself realizing my mouth was gaped open multiple times. Avengers: Infinity War is the cultivation of everything Marvel has built and it executed it almost flawlessly. There are only two flaws that can be found here. One, the pacing is a bit wonky at parts, as scenes cut away and tones can be shifted. Two, some characters don't get the spotlight that you might want them to. But these flaws are easily forgiven. As this movie delivers on EVERYTHING. The action is exceptional. The emotion is POWERFUL. The music by Silvestri hits you in the gut with every note. The story is at odds, taking turns in ways that you will never see coming, not even with clairvoyance. Now, I can't say much, but what I will say, is that Josh Brolin has given us, quite possibly, one of the greatest villains in cinematic history. He is scary, compassionate, charismatic, but most of all, empathetic. The Russo Brothers also directed their asses off and made their best work yet. That's all I can really say. You need to go into this movie blind like I did, because by the end you won't know what's coming next, you'll be speechless. So until the next Avengers movie arrives, I'll watch it, then watch it again, because it's the only movie we got for a while.
A Quiet Place (2018)
A Quiet Place
How to make a horror movie masterpiece, a lesson by John Krasinski: Have the horror movie be a drama first and horror second. It's amazing that Jim Halpert from the Office had a horror movie masterpiece in him. It's something you'd never expect from him. Ever. Needless to say, this movie IS a masterpiece, with a solid premise that really excites anyone who hears it. A Quiet Place will have you gripping your seat from start to end. It's brilliantly acted, directed, and co-written by John Krasinski, proving that he may be a director to rekon with in the near future. Emily Blunt gives a solid performance and so does the kids, who you'd think would be the worst part of a movie like this, but they're really good and super believable. The story (besides the incredible premise) is brief but brings power with every scene that is put on screen. You will quickly care for this family, more so than other on-screen characters in other horror movies. Plus, it is clear that the writers played situations cleverly, using spoken words only when the situation actually calls for it. No one's an idiot (actually one exception but spoiler) and the family is betrayed in a way that makes you believe they're real, which is really hard for the horror genre. With amazing pacing, and use of sound, A Quiet Place manages to build tension in the most brilliant way possible -- and Marco Beltrami's nail biting score only adds to this tension building. The creatures are nothing short of terrifying, and could possibly land a place next to Alien and Predator in terms of design and pay off. The movie uses sound so excellently and only makes for a more intense experience. If there is one downside, it's that some of the scares seem really cheap and I mean REALLY cheap. Plus, there is a few (TINY) parts that could be considered plot holes, but they're easily forgiven -- same with the CHEAP scares, because it is as I said before, the horror takes second and the drama takes priority. At its heart, A Quiet Place is a family drama about humans (a family) having to adapt to a new and dangerous threat, while also teaching a valuable lesson on family and the importance of the sense that is sound. You should watch it, then watch it again, because this movie deserves it, and other horror movies should be taking note, because THIS is how GOOD HORROR is done.
Justice League (2017)
Justice League
Is Justice League the Holy Grail of DC movies that we've been craving? No. Is it better than Wonder Woman? No. Is it terrible? NO. Is it good? YES. Justice League is a very flawed, but very fun and entertaining movie. If you are a DC or comic book fan, you will have a smile on your face the whole time, guarantee. Everyone in the movie gives their A- Game: Ben Affleck once again nails Batman, Gal Gadot is amazing as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher was surprisingly good as Cyborg, Jason Momoa was awesome as Aquaman, Ezra Miller has made the Flash his own and is good in his role. Even the side characters give their A-Game, with J.K. Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon, Amy Adams as Lois, Diane Lane as Martha, etc. Henry Cavill makes a great return, BUT there is something about him that will definitely be noticeable, as the CG for his mustache is sometimes hilariously bad. And thus we get into the negatives of the film, and there are plenty. The pacing for the most part, is off-centered. Everything feels rushed as we snap from character to character from place to place, it's hard to feel connected when you barely have enough to process what the hell just happened. It does feel as though large chunks of the movie were cut and placed on the sidelines, no doubt because WB wanted a movie under 2 hours. The CG sometimes can be pretty bad, the mustache-gate is one clear example, and might take you out of the experience. The villain is also pretty weak, as we don't spend enough time with him to really care about his motives. Also, because of this rushed pacing, moments happen in the film that should be cause for applause, but in the end feels a bit unwelcomed and weird. But do these negatives detract from the film as a whole? Yes, but only slightly, as the positives are able to outwit most of the negatives. The action is fun, exciting, and full on amazing to watch unfold on screen. The character interactions are also perfect and are exactly what you would expect from a screenwriter of likes of Joss Whedon. Also...DANNY ELFMAN should be commemorated for his work on Justice League as his score is able to fit things from old DC and new DC while also making it his own. In the end, Justice League might leave some disappointed with its flaws and rushed pacing, but I feel most will appreciate this movie for what it is: THE KICKSTART OF THE DCEU. I'm excited to see where they go from here, but until then I'll watch it, then watch it again.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
War for the Planet of the Apes
It's sort of rare, nowadays, to get a solid film trilogy with all Cinematic Universes studios are trying to get off the ground. And in that trilogy, it is also rare to get some of the best action ever put to screen. And it is even more rare for that Trilogy to have some of the best, well rounded, grounded characters ever. War for the Planet of the Apes is the final chapter in the rebooted Apes franchise, and F**K ME it's perfect. The story is simple, yet delivered in an intriguing and interesting manner. The visual effects are flawless; hell, I almost thought I was looking at real apes acting. The music, haunting. Almost like John Williams' Schindler's List soundtrack. AND THE ACTING—OH MY GOD —THE ACTING. Andy Serkis DESERVES an Oscar for his role as Caesar, a character who struggles with demons and personal issues. Woody Harrelson plays a scary-ass villain and even Steve Zahn, who is the comic relief, does such a good job playing Bad Ape that comparing him to the lord of stupidity, Jar Jar Binks, will be considered a sin. The pace-astounding. The writing-amazing. The direction-PERFECTION. Matt Reeves will become a great director and he definitely knows what he is doing. I want to give this movie an 11/10 but that would be ridiculous. 10/10. Watch it, then watch it again.
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Spider-Man: Homecoming
FINALLY!!!! This is the version of Spider-Man that I've been waiting YEARS for. Tom Holland nails both Peter Parker, and Spider-Man so perfectly, giving each of them a distinct personality. Robert Downey Jr. is used sparingly and never intrudes on Spider- Man's movie and even feels like a father figure at some points. Michael Keaton KILLS as the Vulture and gives Marvel one of its greatest villains to date. Everyone else gives there A-game in Marvel's top 5 best movies to date. Yes, there are some jokes that don't land and yes, this does feel like a John Hughes movie with Spider-Man perfectly stuffed in rather than a super-hero movie, but writing is perfect, the story is AMAZING (wink, wink), and overall, it's a well directed, well made movie. Everyone involved should be proud of themselves. So in all, watch it, then watch it again. SIDE NOTE/SPOILER: STAY TIL THE END OF THE CREDITS IF YOU WANT MARVEL TO GIVE YOU THE FINGER. WORTH IT.
