Ninja Kamui (2024)
Amazing start, falls off very hard
When this show first aired, it was really damn good. Top tier animation, not corners cut, an interesting story. As it has progressed, however, it's now CGI-ridden trash. Without spoiling, the combat went from beautiful animated ninja fighting to something that is not at all to the same quality that the show started with and now relies almost entirely on CGI to function. That CGI is noticeable and bad.
The story is interesting and compelling, although possibly a bit generic and predictable. But with the current level of animation, I'm no longer interested in watching. At episode 8, I just skimmed and decided I was no longer interested. It's truly a shame considering how good the first few episodes are, but the quality has plummeted, and the show is now just kind of bad. Not worth watching.
Dune (2021)
Science Fantasy Masterpiece
Nothing to dislike. Everything was stellar. This is one of those movies I got done watching, completely emotionally engaged, and was sure the reviews would have it pegged at least at a 9. I guess 8.3 is still pretty good comparatively but I really think this movie is spectacular and should for sure be rated higher.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Underrated
I don't understand hardly any of the gripes people have with this show. First, I didn't read the book, but just because it's not like the book, doesn't make it bad. Some people are complaining that it was too cliche at times, especially with Ortega's Mexican family scenes. People know that the super homely, traditional Mexican family exists, right? Is it not okay to make her family like this? As far as the "cliche" goes, it was done well. The acting from the family was good, there were relevant differences in the "cliche" based on show atmosphere, what is there to complain about, really? Frequent but not over-bearing twists with almost no fluff scenes. Acting was great, across the board. The main characters I thought were especially impressive. Action scenes were great, nothing that seemed ridiculous and implausible like most Sci-Fi shows tend to with their scenes. Most of the action is intense and futuristic yet plausible, thanks to the show crafting an immersive, interesting world with deep characters who can exploit this new world. I really cannot talk enough about the world they build without spoiling the initial episodes, but it's a Sci-Fi fan's dream, visually and idealistically. The story is really good and only a few levels less complex than WestWorld. If you are a Sci-Fi fan, ignore every critic; watch this show. Now. If you're not a Sci-Fi fan, watch it anyway. It's just really good.
The 100 (2014)
Give it a few episodes
A lot of the negative reviews (almost all) focus on the fact it's a "teen drama" (which it isn't) and continue to talk about a lot of things that happen during the show which relate to this fact. The show has an awesome premise, and while the first few episodes are very "teen drama" I believe that these episodes are intentionally set up like that. The "world" is exceptionally harsh, and these naive teens don't fully understand that until a few episodes in. They learn the hard way. If you have seen the entirety of the first season you would know this is not a simple teen drama. Drama? Yes. There is drama. Scientific inaccuracies to convey drama and push story? Yes that's in this show. But it does these things well. Very well. Also, whoever wrote this show may be a little cheesy (less cheesy than shows like Arrow or Flash) but the story is phenomenal. Every episode contains many plot twists for an array of interesting characters who grow exponentially over the course of the two seasons I've seen. Legitimately every episode comes with serious plot twists and incredible moments. And it doesn't feel like these moments are fillers or simply flashy explosions. They're all relative to the main plot. Sometimes they're dark and sinister. Other times they're romantic. Many times they're political. This show will keep you entertained, all the time, with only the first few episodes of "teen drama" to complain about. Watch this show. You will like it. Nay, love it.
