The Good Place (2016)
cool concept, but could use better execution
I wanted to like this show so much. Cool concept, love Kristen Bell, but I just couldn't make myself like it. None of the characters, excluding Chidi, are likable at all. Most of them are very annoying in fact. And god, Tahani's accent and voice just killed me. I liked the diverse casting and most of the actors did their best, but the characters themselves were too overdone and shallow to be really engaging. The jokes in show rarely landed, and the episodes barely ever made me laugh. The idea and concept had a lot of potential, but the show just never lived up to it. Maybe with tighter writing or more complex and likable characters the show would be good, but as of now its just not worth it.
12 Monkeys (2015)
Exciting Dystopian Time-Travel
Its a very exciting show, and I binge watched all of it in an embarrassingly short amount of time. Its very sci-fi, and reminds me a lot of Fringe. It has the same sort of tone and feel. The time travel is also very well done, and normally I'm not a big fan of time travel but the show did a good job of it. Season 1 there was only traveling between the future and the present while the show gets you invested in the characters, before moving on in season 2 to time traveling to the past. Season 1 and 2 are pretty different as the show is continuously upping the stakes, which does sound kind of weird considering the show starts with a man traveling back in time to stop a virus from destroying most of mankind, but trust me, it gets even more intense.
I love all the characters, none of them are perfect and have some pretty big flaws, but they all still make you want to root for them. Well root for all of the 'good guys', the bad guy are pretty great at being creepy and sinister. All the actors do a good job and have great chemistry with each other. The relationships and friendships are great, and really the heart of the show. Although sometimes it does seem like the writers throw things in just for the sake if making things difficult. I haven't seen the movie so I don't know how it compares, but from what I've seen this is an excellent show and definitely worth checking out. Its exciting, intense, and always leaves you wanting more. I love future post-apocalyptic dystopians and this is definitely one of the good ones.
Key and Peele (2012)
The sketches are the best
The stand-up parts of the show aren't that great, but the sketches are always hilarious. I normally skip the stand-up show, but its the sketches that really make it worth watching. Key and Peele is definitely my favorite sketch show, despite the lackluster stand-up in between. Sketches come across really well over a screen, but for stand-up you really just need to be there in the room. It loses a lot if you're not. They make some of the funniest sketches I've ever seen though. They're always very funny and very high quality. A lot of work goes into the design, the sets, the costumes, the characters, even the acting; its all very well crafted. And the humor is very on point. Its a shame the shows no longer running, hopefully someday it comes back.
Timeless (2016)
Fun, but can't take it too seriously
Overall, its a fun show. You can't take it too seriously, but its nice to watch for the adventure and the history. The time travel is pretty well done, and its nice to see their actions have real consequences in the present. It also does a good job addressing some of the obvious issues of time traveling when you're not a white dude. The characters are decent and entertaining, though nothing new. The actors do a pretty good job, and the storys okay if you don't pay too much attention. The show doesn't take take itself too seriously, and has a nice light-hearted feel to it. Its a good show to just relax with and enjoy the ride. Don't go in expecting high artisanal materiel, just enjoy the fun, charming, little time-traveling adventure.
